I finally got the chance to visit the Happy Poochie, inspired by my veggie loving mom. While not a vegetarian, she often will choose a vegetarian dish and with how vegetable heavy the menu is, I figured this was the perfect opportunity to come in for the first time. While Happy Poochie has been open for years, their short hours (11am-2:30pm M-F) make it hard to coordinate with my husband with days off. We came in not long after they opened at 11am on Monday, July 27th and stayed about an hour chatting even after we finished our meals. I got the cold hand cuke sandwich with a soda, while my parents split a sandwich (that I didn't hear the name of but had turkey on it), my mom choosing a canned tea and my dad getting a fountain drink lemonade. My mom almost got some chips, but they didn't have the healthier chips that she prefers. This spot was super cozy as well as clean. My dad used the restroom and reported back that it was well maintained. They have a cute porch area to enjoy on nice days like today, but we opted to stay inside. This was all of our first time here and we're very impressed with Happy Poochie Eatery. I very much would recommend finding a way to come out and try a sandwich or salad, though the hours do make that hard for the standard 9-5 worker. What a delight! The reviews certainly didn't lead us astray with this one. I searched healthy eats along our route north and Happy Poochie popped up on Yelp. For starters, the space is very airy and inviting and the same goes for the sweet staff. They all were hamming it up with our kids. We ordered the Cool Hand Cuc sandwich with cucumbers, onion, tomato, cream cheese on pumpernickel bread. We also ordered the Portofino salad that was loaded roasted red peppers, carrots, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, etc. I also had a carbonated jasmine lemongrass tea that was zesty and lovely. We stopped here for lunch, after getting to St. Joseph too early to check into our hotel. I had the Mr. Swiss T : turkey and swiss with tomato, red onion and romaine lettuce on pumpernickel bread (there's a dill dressing you can get, but I skipped it because I don't like dill) My husband and son got the Hot Poochie: an italian sub with assorted meats, melted provolone and giardioniera peppers a ciabatta roll. Everything was delicious! and they have a nice outdoor seating area, where we could sit with our dog. Nice and friendly staff too. The salad I had was honestly one of the best in my entire life. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

As much as I love the food at Happy Poochie, I do have a problem with the fact that my order is almost always wrong. I am not going to keep tipping on carry outs when they do not even pay attention to what they are giving you. If you have pop in your order, they often will just not hand out the pop and you have to ask. You know people order these things, so why not check the receipt before you hand it out? How else do you think people are getting pop when they refuse to give orders out inside and tell you to go to the window, even in the winter. I often order the same salad and today they just did not add the red peppers to it, why? The last time they put onion on a salad that said no onion. I hate red onion. It is always something. I did not pick up the order myself today so I could not check it. Look at the order both before and after you make it. My orders are always for 1-2 people, nothing big. Your job is to give out the correct orders, period. read more

Everything you need for a quick pit stop for lunch! Clean bathrooms, really friendly service, and great fresh ingredients. Prices were a bit higher than I expected (~$13 for a sandwich or wrap) but great quality and taste so it was worth it. I think customers would be more happy if it came with a little bit of chips or fries or salad for that price so it felt more like a meal. I loved that the bread was so soft though and it was a great size to eat without making your stomach hurt at all. We found a fun little joint called Happy Poochie Eatery on Main Street in downtown Benton Harbor, Michigan. They have few indoor seats, a side patio and a park-like outdoor dining area in the back by the old shipping canal. It's very clean and well organized. We started off with The Chopper, an enormous salad featuring chicken, bacon, pasta, and Gorgonzola cheese mixed with romaine, red cabbage, and scallions. The sweet Italian dressing is spot on, offering just a subtle sweetness to contrast the salt in the bacon and cheese. Next up, was a sandwich called The Downtowner, which the owner said has quickly become a fan favorite. Packed inside a ciabatta roll you'll find ham, turkey, bacon, and melted provolone graced with red onions, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and Dijon mustard. I found this ciabatta roll to be a little lighter and softer than many. Some European ciabatta rolls tend to be a little too dense with too much "chew" for a sandwich, but this was excellent. We finished with a weekly special...a sandwich cleverly named Asparageese, showcasing fresh local asparagus from Alex's Veggies and paying homage to the geese who frequently show up in the canal. I must be honest, as a diehard carnivore, I would not have otherwise ordered this. Exploding out of the rye bread, we discovered asparagus, red onion, roasted red pepper and melted swiss cheese and a creamy dill dressing. At first bite, the rye bread and swiss had my taste buds saying "Reuben," but then it took a delicious turn in a different direction. The sandwich burst with fresh flavors and savory notes. The attention to detail is evident in the quality and balance of ingredients in the salads, wraps, sandwiches, and soups that are on its menu. Next time you want to try something new and delicious for lunch, check it out...I'm sure you'll leave with a happy pooch. read more
