I had the Black Garlic Ramen. It was just okay. One of the telltale signs I utilize is the quality of the chasu. Typically it should be tender. This wasn't the case. It was a bit more firmer than what I'd like. If you're not going to be picky this place may be satisfactory with you. I'm always on the lookout for stand out ramen establishments. Service was fair. We didn't get greeted until about 15-20 min standing by the door. There were only 2 people working and they were slammed! One of them was literally running to service people. We didn't get to order until another 10-15 min after sitting down. They have lots of options, there's one menu dedicated to all their sushi options. Their lunch bento boxes seem like the best deal they got. The ramen isn't too bad. It came with a lot of toppings. Per another reviewer, the pork was fatty, but the char was nicely done. Their parking lot is funky and can be challenging to get out of given San Pablo is a super busy street. They definitely need more staff. First time trying. Warm welcome when we arrived. We were seated immediately. The first thing noticed however, was a strong odor of either sewage or dirty water right at the counter. The smell did dissipate after a while- sitting closer to the kitchen. The menu is massive with many sushi options. From baked to special to hand rolls. The gyoza was hot and crispy. The dipping sauce was not your typical soy sauce- it has a kick that is delicious. The miso soup was well seasoned and the seaweed salad was crunchy and fresh. We tried the pork ramen, spicy tuna roll, and lion king roll. They were plentiful and tasty. The beverage selection is massive as well. We tried the jasmine tea and calpico. Overall, the experience was good. A place in my city that I have wanted to try for a while. I'm glad me and the kiddo checked this restaurant off our list. This is unfortunately some of the worst "Japanese" food I've had in the Bay Area. My BF and I ordered the pork tonkatsu ramen and California rolls. The rolls were decent, but the ramen broth was utterly flavorless and the pork belly slices were super fatty and roughly cut. The pork belly tasted like Chinese BBQ pork, not Japanese at all. The staff were all speaking Mandarin to each other. Very disappointing! Do yourself a favor and go to Yummy House in El Sob instead (they're owned by Chinese people too, but they have the Japanese flavors down). read more

I've always had a consistent experience coming to this restaurant. We're seated rather promptly and the space is nicely decorated and not too crowded. Sometimes the table and utensils aren't as clean as I'd like them to be, but the staff replaces things very quickly upon request. A few times it has taken longer to place our order, but I think it's likely because they're short staffed like many other small businesses. One front of the house person also works at King Valley down the road, so we've established a rapport with her in both restaurants, which is nice. The food is also pretty good for our area, and the price points are reasonable. We usually order Ramen and a few rolls. I've also had their party platters and a few of the appetizers. I think the Ramen/udon are the best items on their menu. They come with lots of toppings, unlike a lot of other restaurants that charge extra for those same things. Came here on a whim last night. Was immediately greeted by a friendly woman in the front. She said we could sit anywhere. The place was clean & spacious. I went to wash my hands in the restroom & it was very clean too! Once we were at our table someone came to give us menus and waters right away. The woman at the front desk was incredibly kind and knowledgeable--she patiently answered all my questions about the menu, including what kind of meat was in the ramen, how to get the seaweed on the side, and one of the servers helped me add a side of hot chili powder. The food was excellent! I wish I had snapped a photo. We ordered the black garlic ramen with chicken, garlic edamame, and shrimp tempura. The edamame was beyond excellent--perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. I especially loved the coconut milk and lemongrass notes in the ramen broth; it made the dish feel unique and comforting. We haven't eaten here in person but my hubby and I pick up regularly. We love the Deluxe sashimi, the fish is fresh and smooth as butter. Our favorite rolls are the Rainbow Dragon & the Blizzard. We've tried other local sushi spots, but they just aren't as good. We aren't ramen fans so I can't review that side of the menu, but the sushi is delicious and there are lots of unique options plus the rolls are hearty. read more

I've eaten here a few times, and the sushi rolls are reasonably priced. They even serve a 10 piece Omakase combo for $35'ish dollars which is decent. The rolls are okay, I think the ratio of rice around the roll could be more evenly distributed and they could be rolled a little tighter so as not to fall apart. But the flavor is decent and the fish is fresh. The star of the show for me is the grilled salmon cheeks. Delicious and fatty little morsels of salmon that melt in your mouth. I am pleased to report what a gem this little restaurant is for my part of the Bay area. I ordered the hamachi nigiri and the Unagi don for lunch today. The hamachi was two generous pieces. It was fresh and delicious. The miso soup and the salad were very good as well. The Unagi was a large bowl with seven slices plus pickled faikon and seaweed salad! It was served over perfectly cooked rice with sauce. The service was a little slow. It was understandable because the poor waiter was working all alone. I was visiting my friend and he told me about this place. He said that his co-workers talked highly of this place, so I had to give it a try myself. Before I talk about the food itself, the wait was rather quick and we got our food rather well. The only thing I will mention is that we got our appetizers after we got our ramen. So would have liked to start that before we dug into the entree. Mixed Tempura: These were very crunchy and plentiful. They used rather big cuts of vegetables for the tempura. The sauce was light and delicious. Chicken Karaage: They use chicken thighs as their cut. The katsu sauce tasted tangy and delicious and the chicken was fried perfectly for me. The lemon was a nice garnish. Volcano Roll: Honestly, it did not taste that special to me. It looked very pretty on the plate and was delicious, but nothing really stood out to me from other places I been to. Still, it was a delicious roll and filling. Inari Nigiri: Always my favorite. Was very tangy and delicious. Nothing more I can say. Black Ramen: This was the main dish I wanted to eat. It was flavorful with the garlic taste and the toppings were plentiful as well. I normally don't leave any negative reviews, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, and try to be helpful. However, due to the sickness my partner has been through I need to say something. We had been looking for a good Japanese food spot and saw this place had lovely reviews. We ordered on Uber Eats. We had shrimp tempura, dragon roll, deep fried Cali roll, spider roll and lion king roll. The dragon roll was the only food item he ate that I didn't. Everything tasted delicious, but this morning my partner was sweating profusely and awfully sick out both ends, if you catch my drift. He was on the toilet from about 6am-noon, unable to even keep water down. He's resting now due to being ill for so long. Unfortunately, the experience was not what we expected. We ordered Tan Tan Ramen (spicy), Spider roll and the Chicken Karaage for the appetizer. The Ramen broth was not spicy at all and it tasted bland. Not much flavor. The presentation looked good but very disappointed. The spider roll was nicely presented and it tasted really good with soft shell crabs. However, for the price, the portion was small. And lastly, the Chicken Karaage didn't looked good and it didn't taste good either. The chicken was dry and the batter had no crunch. For the price, the portion was not much either. Solid 3.5 rounded to 4! Finally got to try the Yelp labeled "hot and new business" in Pinole for dinner. Pinole and Hercules are in need of a standout sushi spot and I was holding out hope for this highly anticipated new Japanese restaurant on San Pablo Ave. Parking lot is kinda small and I had to squeeze in on an end spot, which was a little tough to get out of afterwards. The interior is nicely renovated and has a bright modern feel. Proof of vaccination is required to dine in. There were some patrons, a couple of sushi chefs, 1 hostess/server and a bus boy who looked pretty busy. I was seated near the window in the back corner after flashing my virtual proof of Covid vax. Menu is a tad $$ and has the usual suspects -appetizers, sushi, nigiri, sashimi ramen, udon, some special rolls, combos, drinks and desserts. Overall the service was friendly/prompt and my food was presented beautifully, but had a few gripes. -Shrimp tempura appetizer $7.95 (3 pieces)- shrimp tempura itself was fine but the sauce was super bland. I felt like I was dipping it in warm water. I needed that dashi flavor- please work on this sauce! -Sake nigiri (aka salmon nigiri)- $6.95 salmon sashimi was tasty. However, the nigiri rice needed work- it was a bit mushy and was missing flavor, maybe needs more rice vinegar? -Dragon roll: $14.95- this was beautifully presented and each bite was yummy. It's a little small for what you pay for but the unagi and avocado were very tasty. Hopefully the restaurant can work on these kinks by the next time I visit. How many people within maybe the ten mile radius wondered when this spot would finally open... If I had a buck for every time I asked that question myself... BUT! Here they are, finally! The wait is over! I intentionally skipped breakfast and ran a few errands during the day to build up those hunger pangs for a late lunch grub from here. I had the chance to look over their menu before coming through, so I had a good idea what I wanted. Since Hubbers was working at home, it was gonna be on a to-go basis. GARLIC EDAMAME: Hubbers and I have never had this, so we gave in to our curiosity. It was DELICIOUS. Great level of garlic flavor without taking away the edamame's main taste. Would recommend. SALMON KAMA: I originally wanted the hamachi, but was told they didn't have it. This was not a bad sub. Great grill and salt finish. Adding a few lemon drops helped elevate the flavor just a tad bit. FUTO MAKI: Okay, I'm not sure why I got this. As I went through their list of nigiris and sashimis, I noticed they didn't have saba/mackerel. So I asked the lady taking my order, and she mentioned "maki." (I'm guessing she heard me say "maki" instead of "mackerel" maybe?) I was even specific about saying I didn't want a roll and she continued on saying they can serve it as a nigiri. So, yeah. It was disappointing. And because I didn't want this in the first place, I didn't enjoy it. Hubbers liked it, so there's at least that. HAMACHI NIGIRI: Got this for Hubbers because he's a yellowtail fiend. I didn't bother trying it because I feel he would enjoy it more than I would. Mental note: a 2nd order of this is a must. PORK KATSU CURRY: It is nothing like what I'm used to. The appearance itself was immediately off. The pork katsu was done right - nicely seasoned, thin breading on the outside while juicy on the inside - so I'll give 'em that. But then a few snags: one - there was hardly any curry sauce which is suppose to make the pork katsu's flavor pop out. It also came with sides of kimchi and marinated seaweed salad, both which completely altered the main essence of the dish. The soup was good, but a little on the cold side, so I had to nuke it for a few seconds. The salad: forgettable. I honestly didn't enjoy this as much as I wanted to, so I'm most likely going to skip this and any of their curry dishes. FOOD: 4. Extra star for the salmon kama and garlic edamame. SERVICE: 3. Would have been slightly higher if not for the maki and pork curry gaffe. VALUE: 3. Fair for what we got. PARKING: Private lot. Street parking also available. OVERALL: 3.25. There were a few who came in after me (while I waited for my food) saying how happy they were to find this place finally open. There were also a few people dining in. So it's looking like they're off to a good start. I get it - they've barely started, so I don't plan on giving up on them that easily. Walk in and the young kid says he will take our order. Honestly had ZERO customer service skills ! I have been eyeing this place for a long time and am glad they are open. The space is very spacious and can seat a lot of people. It is very open. They also have child seats and a changing table in the restroom. I really appreciate that in case I need a changing station. Service is very attentive and friendly. We ordered a few things to try. The quality of the sushi is good and the cut it well. The spider roll was a little disappointing, since the soft shell crab was over cooked for me. Presentation was very nice though. My family and I come here often for ramen and sushi, and never been disappointed. This time we got the black garlic ramen (as usual) and the 10 piece omakase. The fish pieces are thick and fresh. It's comes with toro, amaebi, and salmon belly for under $40. So bomb I would definitely order again. The waitress is very nice to us and quick in her service. The scallops on the Lion Queen weren't overwhelmed by the sauce.
