I was meeting with a friend for dinner and he recommended this spot to me. He enjoys their happy hour specials, so I decided to give it a try myself. The happy hour menu is limited, but it features a fair selection of rolls. I personally only had the Crunch Roll, which was about $3 off on happy hour Miso Soup: The soup was nothing special. A little bit too salty for me, but otherwise was alright. California Crunch Roll: I really enjoyed this a lot. It's their california roll but with the sauce and crunchy flakes on top. The rolls itself were delicious and plentiful and the happy hour pricing was a plus for me. Dinner Bento: The salad was good, and I really liked the dressing. The veggie tempura were fried correctly and the tempura sauce was alright. The rice was pretty sticky for my taste. My disappointment was in the teriyaki chicken. The pieces themselves were fine, but it was the sauce that was getting to me. It just felt off and didnt really taste like teriyaki sauce to me. Overall, not a bad experience. This sushi spot has been around as long as I've lived in Pinole- alllllll my life lol. They are in the same shopping center as Embers and right next door to Hunan Villa. Their bento box is amazing. Chicken and beef teriyaki are my favorites. The tempura is crispy and delicious. Their sushi rolls are fresh and delicious every single time. Their service is excellent and quick. They are patient and aim to make you happy with your meal. The dining room is a little on the dark side but seating is adequate. Definitely a great place for the family. Parking lot is spacious with handicap parking spots right at the entrance. read more

TLDR: Don't waste your money on the hamachi kama. And maybe skip this place altogether. We came here for my mom's birthday because she loves hamachi kama. Six years ago, they served us a burnt, overcooked fish, (which they easily replaced with a well-cooked one) so we chalked it up to bad luck and decided to give them another try. Unfortunately, history repeated itself. We ordered hamachi kama (interestingly, it's not on the menu. Maybe now we know why), shrimp and veggie tempura, miso soup, and some happy hour rolls. The Oh Yes Roll was actually good, and the other two rolls and tempura were decent. The miso soup, though, was too salty. To our pleasant surprise, the first hamachi kama (pictured) was tasty. Good size, not burnt, soft and moist. My brother even ate the skin. We enjoyed it enough that my mom wanted to order a second one, and we got dejavu when it came out burnt. And no, not a char, as in the skin was completely burnt like it was cremated. All three of us took a single bite and immediately knew it was inedible. The inside was dry, rubbery, and just plain unpleasant. We sent it back and told our server (who, to be fair, was very kind and attentive). But we overheard the chef in the back getting visibly salty and offended, which felt incredibly unprofessional. The server asked if we wanted it remade, but we'd already lost our appetite and wanted to go back to turn the day around with some cake, so we just asked for the check. She told us we'd be charged whether we had it remade or not, so we begrudgingly agreed to wait. Then she came back saying they would remake it, but that was "the last one" and offered to pack it up instead. Huh??? Why offer to remake it in the first place if it was the last one? Make it make sense. She also told us that the chef said they can't take it off the bill since "we ate half of it already" when we literally took one bite each off of the skinnier side. It felt like we were being punished for sending it back. We refused (since again, it's inedible anyway, but now I wish I accepted, so I was able to take a pic), paid the full check, and walked out disappointed. That one bite of rubbery cremated fish cost us twenty bucks, and now we know exactly why it's not on the menu lol This was supposed to be a birthday treat, instead, it was a repeat of the same failure we experienced six years ago. Tachikawa, the official restaurant beside The Ember that has been in the Del Monte Center forever. With Hunan Villa closing down in the end of 2024 Tachikawa has been in that spot for years. It's been years since I had take out from Tachikawa. I was not disappointed on my order. The Chicken Teriyaki and Salmon Teriyaki were delicious. I was provided with two chopsticks instead of one. The inside of Tachikawa is small but nice. Coming there for dinner can be half crowded. I am aware of the price of food at Tachikawa. What you pay for is worth it, no complaints at all. read more

Went here a few months ago with my girlfriend. We ordered the Dinner Bento Box and Unagi Rice Bowl. The Dinner Bento Box had the choice of getting two protein items. We opted for the grilled mackerel (Saba Shioyaki) and sashimi (salmon). The Bento Box included a small bowl of miso soup, a small scoop of rice, a small serving of salad, a small portion of seaweed salad, and usual dab of wasabi and pieces of pickled ginger. The grilled mackerel had a nice flavor. It was cooked well. Loved the sashimi. It was fresh. We were served six pieces. The salad was okay. It had a good flavor. The seaweed salad was good, just wished that we had more of it. The scoop of rice was enough for the mackerel. The miso soup was pretty good. It had a very nice flavor and had small chunks of tofu. A very good way to start our meal. The Unagi Rice Bowl was pretty good. Loved the flavor of the eel. It was both sweet and savory. The rice was much needed to soak up the sauce of the eel. The eel meat was cooked well. Loved the char and texture of the eel. The portion size was not too bad. The service was pretty decent on a Monday evening. There were only 3 parties dining that evening during our visit. The server was efficient and genuine to us. The cooks did a great job on our food. I can describe the ambiance as casual and little bit romantic. Nice area with ample parking space. The location was in an okay area. Glad to stop by Tachikawa and enjoy a nice meal here. The food here is actually ok. It is the closest sushi place near me. However, the few times I got food from this restaurant, I always felt unhappy with the price to quantity ratio. I understand that everything costs more these days, but their competitors have lower price, same quality, but larger portion. I also find that most of their sushi rolls are overly drenched with sauce, especially the unagi sauce. Even when I asked them to put light sauce, it's always still pretty drenched lol. read more

Updating my previous review to 4 stars! The yummy bento box dinner I had today with my parents was a better experience than the other slow Friday meal. Proof of vax and ID is required to dine in. The hostess and server were very sweet and service was prompt. We ordered the following: -Green tea was on the house- never know who will charge for this nowadays so kudos to them! -Dinner bento box: chicken teriyaki and salmon sashimi - sashimi portion was pretty sizable. Chicken teriyaki flavor was ok but could have been more tender. $18 -Dinner bento box: beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura - beef portion was a tad small but tasty and the shrimp tempura was delish. $18 - 49er roll (8 pieces) neatly made and bite sized- fresh ingredients and like the citrus pop of the lemon with salmon and Cali roll. $13 -Double Oh roll (6 pieces)- I enjoyed this combo of unagi, salmon, and escolar. Tasty! $12 Overall, we liked our meal- only gripe I have is I wish the rolls were a little bigger with more quality ingredients. Prices don't break the bank but they should be proportionate to what you get, particularly with the sushi rolls. With that said, bento boxes are approved! read more

My overall experience at Tachikawa was just okay. Our family of 4 went on a Friday for dinner. The pricing of rolls were reasonable. They even had happy hour pricing so we got California rolls for the kids. We ordered a variety of items to try, Chirashi bowl, mixed tempura, edamame, and rolls. The Chirashi bowl looked pretty and tasted okay, but it kind of bothered me that the cuts of meat are super inconsistent (some tiny pieces and some huge pieces). I feel like part of a sushi restaurant experience is the preciseness of the cuts of fish, so this felt off for me. The mixed tempura was good, battered and fried well and typical different veggies were included. Rolls were not very aesthetic, but taste was fine. The one thing that really bothered me was the stickiness of the floors. Not only was the bathroom floor sticky, which a lot of small restaurants have problems with, but the dining area floor was also very sticky.... I am a bit of a clean freak so this kind of ruined my dining experience. read more

I usually like to come a few times before I like to give a review. Good is very consistent as I see the same sushi chef present. I like to come here because of the happy hour, get a decent roll and a large beer under 20 bucks. I usually get nigiri and sashimi, my favs. I thought I try out their rolls. Food is good and fresh. 6:30pm is where people start rolling in but they do close at 8:30pm. I noticed no TVs to be distracted by, so good place to have conversations 1v1 or family time. Dates are possible, but more of a casual dinner. I enjoyed it! Servers are usually attentive, nice, and polite. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for the longest time! Hubbers and I first noticed it when we dined next door. We vowed to check it out sometime, but never got around to it. Then my parents came up for a visit. I initially wanted to skip it since Hubbers was at work and I would have liked to have him join us... ... but the desire for a bento box just kicked in too hard, so the three of us went without him. (So sorry, Beebee! Kinda!) We arrived in the middle of a lunch rush. We lucked out as we scored one of three remaining tables for up to 4. The menus were given to us immediately. It took a minute for my parents to decide what to have. I had decided before I even got here (deep-fried soft-shelled crabs, lunch bento box B5 and saba nigiri. (I was in the mood for mackerel!) SABA NIGIRI: It was almost meaty with great salt and acidic levels. I felt it a great way to cleanse the palate. Shared one piece with Mom and she liked it as well. DEEP-FRIED SOFT-SHELLED CRABS: Battered thin and fried to a good crisp. There was a good freshness level to it that it didn't need the dip. It was good as is. MISO SOUP: Comes with the bento box. A teenee bit on the salty side but didn't take away the main essence, flavor and depth. Another good starter. SABA BENTO BOX: I was a little disheartened when I saw how small the main course/fish was. (It may be the smallest I've had in comparison to others I've had previously.) But it was packed with a lotta flavor as small as it was. Like the nigiri, it hit the flavor profile my taste buds were shootin' for. And the salmon sashimi - WHOA, talk about generous! Not only did this side come in quantity, it also came with quality. It was fresh and almost buttery, boy, that was really good! FOOD: 4. SERVICE: 4. Server tended to us when needed. VALUE: 5. You get more than what you pay for. PARKING: Shared with others. Might be a little bit of a challenge during the lunch rush. OVERALL: 4.25. Impressive first visit. Came here for a weekday lunch on the glowing recommendation of a friend, and she was right! This place is very good!! The location is in a small mall right off San Pablo Avenue, but the inside is a world apart. The décor is very clean, well lit, and features a sushi bar where you can see the action - unless a divider is in your way! The use of dividers makes the rather large space seem more like several dining rooms, and I like that approach. The atmosphere adds a lot to the experience, in my (not so humble!) opinion. We were here about an hour before the afternoon closing (split lunch and dinner hours, so beware your timing!), and there were only about 8 other people here. I have heard that at lunchtimes the line can be literally out the door on along the exterior, this place is that good and that well liked. We ordered some ice waters and took a while to decide what we wanted. Finally, we decided on some rolls and appetizers. For starters, we ordered the house salad, a veggie tempura, miso soup, and the agedashi tofu. For the rolls, we ordered the Dragon roll, Avocado roll, 49er roll, and the California roll. All this for two adults and two kids under 4 years old! I guess we were hungry. The appetizers came quickly, and you can't go wrong with miso soup and house salad. The veggie tempura was nicely battered, but the veggies were heavy on starches, like yams and root vegetables. Only a couple of pieces of broccoli and one slice of zucchini. There are many other veggies amenable to a good tempura bath, so I'd like to see some variety. Other places offer different types, but too often (for cost?) the starches are the main choice. The taste was very nice, however, and it was filling. The agedashi tofu is a favorite of mine, and like the tempura, is done differently in different restaurants. Here, the tofu was not as well crisped (cooked in a pan) as I'd like, allowing it to be a little "mushy," which isn't my favorite "feel" for a food, even tofu. The dipping sauce was okay, but what I really liked were thin strips of seaweed as a garnish. The crispy texture and especially the saltiness really added to the rather bland flavor (or no flavor, for tofu really is rather flavorless!) of the dish. A saving grace, and something I have not found elsewhere - bonus points! The rolls came soon after, and all were presented very nicely (see pics). The fish here is very fresh, and the tastes and textures were amazing - although the avocado roll was just avocado - of course! Not too flavorful or textured, but this leads us into an observation. The menu here (as compared to other experiences) is a little light on "veggie" based rolls. In fact, there was not a really good offering of rolls with just vegetables, which is a shame. The Bay Area has many vegetarians, and the menu should a couple of really good, quality veggie rolls (maybe, for example, with mushrooms, pickled radish, and other unusual fillings). Or wrap them in seaweed, or deep fry, or . . . well, you get the idea. They do the fish rolls VERY WELL - I would just like to see a couple of similar rolls for the non-fish eaters. The service was excellent, friendly and professional. And the pricing is not bad - unless you order an entire menu! I think we got close, LOL. So, the overall experience was very good, and worthy of a shout out, and a return visit. Can't really 5-star, though, for the lack of variety of GOOD veggie rolls. It can, and should be done. And yes, I know people hear "sushi" and think "fish," but there can be (and I've experienced) so much more to this experience! read more

I hate writing bad reviews but people need to be warned . I am honestly so disappointed with this place. I have been coming here for years. First I was told my baked roll would be done in 15 mins I waited 35 even though the restaurant was empty. Then I received a raw "baked" roll and called they said they were too busy to help me to call back or bake it myself? The lack of customer service from the owner is outstanding! If you don't value your customer you clearly don't value the quality of your food which is why it has gone done in quality so much. After I went in showed them the full raw roll he claimed the menu says things aren't fully baked which is false advertisement. He refused to refund me. Being pregnant he put my child's life in danger by not selling what he is advertising. But now that I see the health score review I shouldn't be eating at this dump in the first place. read more

I am soooo happy we finally tried this place. I've been living in Hercules for 4 years now, and I've passed by this place many times, but just never thought to try it because it's so hidden. I am so happy because my favorite Japanese restaurant is about a 35 min drive from my home, and if I'm craving Japanese food, and we don't feel like the driving that far, I am ALWAYS disappointed with the Japanese food we settle for. This wasn't the case with Tachikawa! Rolled in as a party of 6 around 5:20pm last Friday, and we were seated immediately. While I was looking at the menu, I also realize that the place was pretty full. Some tables even looked like they were almost done with their dinner. The place opened at 5:00pm! I got excited because my mom told me that people love this place and wait outside til it opens. That's usually a good sign! Our waitress was very nice and very helpful. My dad had a special request to have his cup of hot tea to come out with his meal because, and even though she and another waitress were the only 2 serving the entire restaurant, she managed to remember his request. It was really quite impressive what the two ladies were able to pull off. And they didn't look stressed either. They were very calm and just knew what they were doing. Service = 5 stars Now for the food! I was really impressed by their rolls. And the portions! We ordered a super cali roll, crunchy roll, rainbow roll, cherry blossom roll, and 2 orders of hamachi nigiri. The fish was fresh and the rolls were beautiful and delicious! I was really happy with our order. We also ordered a bento box with tempura and beef teriyaki. The beef teriyaki was perfect. So tender and I liked the way they sliced it very thin. So this place is only available for takeout. The service was ok! I ordered on a Friday so right off the bat....the wait was long...like 1 .5 hour. But they let me know prior so I'm not mad about it. I ordered the Tiffany Roll and the Chirashi bowl. Man....when I went to pick up my ordered their phones were ringing non stop! So it took awhile for them to check in with me about my order. Now onto the food...the Tiffany roll was pretty good! The macadamia nuts gave it a crunch that was pretty good! I actually quite enjoyed it. The chirashi bowl was ok; they give you A LOT of fish!
