When we first walked in, my thoughts were, 'they're not going to have plumbing parts...' I was totally wrong. This hardware store has it all - everything you expect in a local hardware store and then some. The entry to the store is filled with unique items for your home, trinkets, and gifts. It's a visual delight. Then you get into the heart of the store and there you'll find housewares and small appliances, landscape supplies, light bulbs...the list goes on. They even offer refills of cleaning supplies for environmentally conscious shoppers. Don't forget about upstairs which houses the plumbing supplies amongst other things. Sometimes even lower. That really doesn't matter though, because the helpful service I receive here more than makes up for a few extra pennies. The staff are super friendly and have helped me with lots of projects along the way. I needed a weird part that wasn't available anywhere else and they found it for me in their storeroom and gifted it to me. I needed a certain type of paint on a holiday-eve and they spent the extra time going through their stash to find a suitable product. When the entire northeast region is out of salt and they have a shipment coming in, they were willing to make arrangements so that some was waiting for me when I showed up that evening. And when I need advice (and honestly, it seems to be always) they are a lot more reliable and useful than trying to randomly search Youtube. It is the smaller hardware stores that provide what most do it yourselfers (read: amateurs) really need: attention. Because of that, I will keep coming back to here.

I normally would not be in a hurry to write about a hardware store that is not near my house. How often would I likely be to visit it again? But this store caught my attention when I saw an ad for them on TV. They claimed that they have items not found in other stores. They also emphasized that they offer friendly and readily available service. Today, in search of a particular style cabinet knob, after nothing met my wife's satisfaction in Lowe's, Home Depot, and several other stores, we tried Chance's on our way through Latham. The first thing we noticed was a friendly greeting from an employee helping another customer in the parking lot. Walking through the store we saw everything very well organized and nicely displayed in a clean environment. Once we found what we were in search of, we met that same welcoming employee (owner?) from the parking lot on our way to the register. He was truly friendly and made the shopping experience a pleasure. The item we purchased could have been ordered for less from Lowe's, but it was not available today and we've never received such a sincere welcome in any big-box store. There is definitely truth in advertising from Chance's Hardware store.

The…read moremost recent was to pick up an online order, and as always, the staff was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. I personally like that the store has a sort of corner shop vibe although it's not exactly small. The store is airways well lit and aisles are clearly labeled, and again the staff here have been exceptionally helpful. The news BBQ section in the back atrium is impressive even if I'm not the biggest cook in the family. And I also saw a custom shirt section although by the looks of it, I may be able to customise more than t-shirts. I hope they keep improving and stay open for a long time.

However, today was first time I used their Curbside Pickup option. I placed an order online and paid for it. Next day I drove up, and called store to let them know I wanted curbside pick up. I was told to drive around back. A staff member was out in two minutes with my order. I was asked where I wanted him to put the order. I signed a paper acknowledging I received items. Then I was given my receipt and thanked for my business. Start to finish once I arrived at store was less than 6 minutes. Efficient process. I drove off to continue running errands.

I purchased a washer and dryer on 3/17/26. the delivery guy damaged my pipes in my home, was aggressive and the other guy was dragging my $2200 washer & dryer through dog feces, snow and mud in my yard unwrapped!! i spoke to "Corporate" for an HOURS the moment this happened. i had to call a plumber to fix the issue THEY created, it cost me $632!! CRICKETS every single time I call about someone reimbursing me for THEIR damage. I call every day, nobody knows what's going on or has any customer service skills. I called daily for a week for them to then tell me it's a 3rd party issue. second time they're going to deliver- DOT mysteriously takes the truck off the road. they obviously think nobody works. it took 3x for me to RECEIVE my PAID merchandis! I talk to the 3rd party vendor. he seems like he was intelligent and said he'd chargeback my account by 4/1/26 at 5pm if no response from Lowe's. CRICKETS!! i emailed, I called, I emailed, I called. NOBODY WANTS TO FIX THE SITUATION THAT THIS COMPANY CAUSED. Now I received a letter from their employe saying they deny damage. HARASSMENT! why is this person writing me at all?! We have spent an extraordinary amount of money in both of these stores. We rarely need to make returns, but we just had a recent instance of having to return 5 bags of polymeric sand because we decided to have the job done by a contractor. I saved the receipt and my husband went to the store to return the sand. It was a VERY UNPLEASANT experience to learn that there is a 90 day window on returns (with receipt) and NO EXCEPTIONS ARE GRANTED FOR A RESELLABLE ITEM such as polymeric sand! Needless to say, we have made our LAST purchase at Lowes and I will be sharing this VERY NEGATIVE experience EVERYWHERE I can.
