March 5th, 2026. I…read moream extremely upset by my experience at J & J Ace Hardware, 2015 Auburn Rd, Utica, MI. I went in to return a fuse detector today that failed to detect current in 4 out of 10 outlets. The floor manager, Gabby, tested it on a single power strip at the counter, said "It works for me," and then told me I "bring items back all the time" and that I am "waisting $15 of hers." I've been a loyal customer for years, rarely returning anything, "if anything," yet I was publicly accused, ridiculed, and repeatedly told to "leave the store" in front of other customers. She insisted that it was me, and as a person of my race, it felt like I was being unfairly judged and stereotyped. The humiliation of being singled out, accused, and dismissed like this in front of strangers is something I will never forget. No one should ever be treated this way, accused, humiliated, or judged because of their race. Because of this experience, I will never return to this store. I hope management takes this seriously so no one else has to experience this kind of pain, embarrassment, and treatment. It's amazing how things change over time. I've been a customer for over five years. It's been great up until now.

I noticed that they had a kitchen area filled with small appliances, food storage, cooking, and bakeware. There are other household products such as cleaning supplies and laundry items. I love their trash cans. My mom actually bought one from here. The Brute ones are amazing and cheap. Great for yard and trash. They have a large section for paint and wood supplies. Anything you can think of, they have. All the the necessary tools as well. Even ladders for outside work, painters, or anyone. One of my favorite things was the storage bins. Perfect for storing away things taking up space. They have many other sections like plumbing, automotive, and hardware. A useful area for me is the doorknobs and padlocks. I was looking for new ones. We also saw lots and lots of tooks for everything. Their biggest section may have been lawn. The lawn area have sprinklers, tools, weedwackers, blowers, lawn mowers, hose, bird feeders, plant food, insect control, fertilizer, grass chemicals, and grass seed. They also have grills and propane. Some of the tools are useful for yard work such as shovels and rakes. It's seems like a great place to buy painting and lawn items more than anything else. I did see some items priced higher than other stores like the cleaning supplies. They do also have some cheap steals.

He checks to see where problem is, discount prices did not ring up even tho UPC code is crossed out. Clerk had to call someone to come and put codes in for at least 2 and maybe 3 of the flowers I was purchasing. Why can't the clerk do this? Hes got a sign right there with prices for the flowers. Waited again for the second clerk/supervisor to come and assist. Line is down the aisle. Guy behind me asks Clerk to call for someone to open 2nd register. Clerk/Supervisor comes and VOIDS OUT all the flowers, says he has to start over. This means he has to have my phone number & email again. And scan every flower again. Have already waited and waited and waited. Keep your flowers. I'll go somewhere else. Absolutely irritating and seems to happen every time I buy anything at this store.

The cashier pointed me toward a "help desk" at the back of the store. The gentleman there was cutting some keys so I patiently waited about 4-5 minutes for him to finish so that I could be helped. When I was finally able to ask him about finding them, he pointed down the aisle and brusquely said "they're in the drawers down there." There are literally hundreds of small drawers down one aisle. He immediately turned to someone else, dismissing me. I felt he was rude and not at all "helpful". After wandering around for 5 minutes trying to find what I was looking for, I gave up and left. Granted, they only lost a small sale, but they lost a customer forever. I will not be back. I owned my own store for 10 years, so I understand full well how a small kindness can bring years of repeat business.

I've had to run up here many times to grab a plumbing part or another piece of hardware. As far as their services, I've had keys made and paint mixed. We also purchase our lawn fertilizer here each year and bags of topsoil for any yard or lawn repairs along with grass seed etc. Their deck stains are another item we buy when it's time to spruce up the color of the deck. It's a handy store indeed and whether it's spring, summer, winter or fall- the nicely laid out aisles and seasonal department usually have what we need. From small items to large, they have you covered and if it saves a trip to the big box stores, then you've saved yourself some time as well. The store is always neat and clean which is always something I notice when entering any establishment and that speaks volumes that they care about their customers.

There are well maintained restrooms available, and cutting stations can be found if needed. They offer a monthly kids crafts event, along with other, occasional, informative classes, and they always have great seasonal deals to take advantage of (both in-store and online). My visit today though, was of a different manner. I'm working to socialize my new pup, possibly as a service dog, and I was told Home Depot was a dog friendly store. Upon entering, I did stop at customer service to be sure it was allowed. The employee enthusiastically replied that all well behaved furry companions were welcomed at Home Depot, the only expectation is that the owners clean up messes. I was relieved and we happily went about our training. Honestly, it could not have been more of a positive experience for us. All of the employees we meet were very friendly, and we were acknowledged often seeing if we needed assistance. We did a few laps around the store, found a cute plant to commemorate my pups first in-shop (besides pet stores) adventure. It was a great shopping trip, I definitely can recommend the Utica location, and I'm sure I'll be visiting again soon.
