Situated on the harbor the covered decks face the boat docs. Inside dining is also available.

Touted as the locals place to eat, it is fabulously divvy! We had good service and enjoy dining on the deck that overlooks the marina. I ordered the Red Grapefruit Crush, which was very refreshing and delicious. Since we are in Maryland, we ordered the crab dip appetizer. It was creamy and is served in a bread bowl that you break apart to eat. It is a mess eat, but the dip is creamy and delicious. It has an undercurrent of sour cream or maybe cream cheese and it plenty to share with others. My husband had the fried shrimp for dinner with the veggie of the day, local corn on the cob. He said it was crispy and very good. I ordered the Maryland crabcake which was flaky with crab and I had a salad and the corn as well. All of it was prepared perfectly, came out quickly, and was sized perfectly. For dessert we shared the hot apple tart which is served with creamy cinnamon ice cream. Yum! Highly recommend Harbor Shack.

This is a waterfront restaurant with a great open atmosphere. Stephanie and her mini crew were very accommodating. Good beer, great seafood, especially the crab dip and good discussion made this a very nice evening. There's also a gift shop and plenty of parking. Very casual dress.

My husband and I had lunch at Harbor Shack last summer with some friends. The restaurant is comfortable and welcoming and right on the water. The service was fast and friendly. The food was great (I had a really good steak, mac and cheese and salad), and the rum buckets were even better. I loved the cute little store across the parking lot as well. We usually go to Waterman's when we're in Rock Hall. I think I will push for Harbor Shack next time as it just had a newer and more laid back vibe to me.

Gorgeous place!! Inside under the roof in this open floor plan... no walls so there was a beautiful cross breeze! The staff is personable and have happy faces. No rush, casual atmosphere... almost feels like I'm on vacation!!! Ms Kay and Stephanie really make you feel like I'm having dinner at my family's house, kinda like a family reunion (except I have never been here). The crowd seems like it is hometown locals hangout type. Push some tables together and it's a family seating. We were a party of 9! And we had NO wait!!! We called ahead and Ms Kay said it would only take 10 minutes to get the table ready! We got there and it took less than 2 minutes! All the dishes were on point! So flavorful and savory! Huge portions! We all shared and did a tasting tour and there was smiles all around the table!!! I wish I could take this place to my town!!! It was a memorable experience :)

But over the past year, things have changed. Prices are extremely high for what you are served and it just feels different, too. It used to be crowded all the time. Since the new owners have taken over, prices have risen and today, for the second time, we paid $130 for a dozen of what were supposed to be "large" crabs. Not even close! I brought this to the attention of our server who replied, "Geez, I'm really sorry about that. I'll mention it to the kitchen." That was it. No follow up. Nothing! Don't get me wrong, prices have risen everywhere and I don't mind paying a little more for food - as long as I don't feel like I am getting ripped off. This was not one of those times - very disappointing! On top of that, I watched some of the staff during our visit. Three young people pretty much stood at the hostess stand the entire time (2 hours) we were there. It was not a busy Sunday and you would think these employees could be doing something to help out our overextended server. Instead of just standing around waiting to put paper on table for crab eaters, or standing around waiting for someone to show up to be seated, why not get busy wrapping utensils in napkins, or fill the condiments in the buckets on each table, or clean off chairs vacated by patrons who were finished eating???? Something! I'm not sure we'll go back to Waterman's. What a shame. Driving for at least 90 minutes from Wilmington 5-6 times a year for over 25 years and spending at least $150 on each dining experience might have ended. Maybe we can find a new place where you don't feel like you're being taken advantage of.

I've been to other places and loved them but this was a first time here. We parked and all you can smell is seafood and fish. Parking was decently easy. We walked in and asked to sit outside and was sent upstairs. Thought it a bit weird, but it was all good. We had nothing else going on on a Monday, and just wanted crabs. So we made our way upstairs and had to walk around a few corners to get to the bar before we self seated and found a table under these stairs. But the view! It was pretty, with the small lake or pond we were staring into. The whimsy breeze felt great against my skin and thankful there was an umbrella which shielded us from the hot sun. The tables were covered with craft paper. There were one server working the section. We ordered a Bloody Mary and a Paloma - who doesn't love a good cocktail on a hot day outside next to water? The menu is a decent size. We wanted the extra large crabs but they only had six left so we did half extra large and half large. We also ordered Mac and Cheese which turned out to be Kraft Mac and Cheese, Hush Puppies and also an order of Cole slaw. I was tired after trying to crack three crabs, but the flavors were great. I wish it had more of the orange eggs stuff but I guess we couldn't choose which type of crab they were and I had no orange eggs in the crab. But the flavors were good. I enjoyed the experience. It was pretty chill and just nice to be outside cracking teeth and sipping drinks.

For some reason, we had nostalgic memories of this place, but it turns out that we pretty much had the same exact three-star experience. We just really wanted to bring our daughter back here since this spot in America plays a significant role in family lore. Unbelievably, it was raining again, but we waited for a table right by two windows, so water vibes were good. We got a couple local beers and while our server was nice, she also had a bit of an unceremonious manner that took us off guard. Not her fault, but we were total idiots and ordered the medium crabs. Why? WHY?! They are impossible to pick! And we even mentioned in our previous review the merits of ordering the jumbo ones to make life easy. Amateur hour!! We did order a few other crab-themed dishes, which made the meal more pleasant. The imperial crab was only OK, but the crab cakes were really something special. We got one fried and one broiled, and we would definitely recommend the latter. There was so much fresh crab and neither of them were greasy. As far as sides, the veggies were drowning in butter, and the corn on the cob tasted like it was cooked in a microwave. Fries were decent and the hush puppies weren't bad, but you know those came right out of a Sysco freezer bag. We got those nutter butter ice cream cone things again and they were terrible. The shell is hard as a rock and so is the flavorless vanilla ice cream underneath while the cone is rubbery soft. Quite the feat. Despite the ups and downs of the cuisine here, we had a really pleasant time as a family, and this place will always hold a soft (shell crab) spot in our hearts. While it's doubtful that we'll be back again, we're glad that we gave it a second go. Just remember: never order medium crabs!

The setting alone makes the trip worthwhile. A special thank you to our server, Christian, who was friendly, attentive, and made our visit even more enjoyable. Crabs are sold by the dozen and are typically available in Extra Large, Large, Medium, and Small sizes, depending on the day's catch. A chalkboard lets you know what's available, and seeing the live crabs in the dockside tanks leaves no doubt about how fresh they are. We ordered a dozen large blue crabs, along with an appetizer of longneck clams, a soft-shell crab sandwich, red potatoes, and a cup of clam chowder. Everything was fresh and delicious, and enjoying it while overlooking the water somehow made it taste even better. The menu offers plenty of seafood favorites, along with several "land lover" options for those who aren't in the mood for seafood. There is both indoor seating and covered outdoor seating, making it a great spot regardless of the weather. Be prepared to grab a mallet and get to work cracking your crabs--it's all part of the fun and a true Maryland tradition. The Cantler family has worked in the seafood industry for five generations, and the restaurant remains family-owned today. It's considered a Maryland institution and is proudly featured on the Maryland Crab & Oyster Trail. If you want the real Chesapeake Bay crab house experience--not a tourist gimmick--Cantler's should be at the top of your list.
