What happened to this place? Always liked visiting the harbor view for a drink on the porch and getting dinner inside. When they announced the renovation, I was excited about how great it would be once it was updated but I couldn't have been more wrong. The new decor is dark and depressing, and the staff seems utterly clueless. The bartenders appear to have zero experience bar tending. It takes forever for them to make a drink and even close out your bill. I saw one of the bartenders give an empty stare to a guest asking for a bay breeze and then google it on his phone, while several other customers waited. I gave it two shots this summer since the renovation but both times I left annoyed. I won't be going back. RIP Harborview read more

Phenomenal hotel and room! I wouldn't stay anywhere else from now on at Martha's Vineyard. The room I was in was spacious and definitely had touch of class. It faced the garden and was very quiet. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They walked us to our room. The bell hops were the most friendly chaps I've ever seen. The place was immaculate from top down. The location was absolutely perfect. Close enough to 'downtown' Edgartown shopping, yet far enough from any chance of noise. The hotel is on a peaceful street with fabulous houses lining the street. We saw bunnies, yes baby rabbits, running around on the street at night. Street lights lined the street to make it easy to find your way back. Edgartown has a 2 screen movie theater, lots of ice cream shops, art galleries, clothing stores, etc. Absolutely peaceful. We will return! read more

I started by calling them and asking for help. It was my honeymoon and I wanted a nice place, by the water, but private. That was very important to me. I thought...I made it clear. We get there, it starts out ok, the front desk woman seemed a little off, but I think she was new...so be it. We got room 215, which I was assured would be perfect (deluxe water view room...I believe even seen on the website.) We walk in, looks great, everything is perfect. We hang in the room for a little and notice that there is a lot of "door traffic" (door's shutting loudly) near us. Meh...maybe it's nothing...maybe it will stop. It doesn't. Then, later that next morning, at 6am, there is the noise of people above us...and neither of us are light sleepers. Here's the point...for several hundred dollars a night, and an expressed importance of privacy (honeymoon) we were essentially upsold on the room, and grouped together with a bunch of country kitchen eating old people...oh, and they put us next to an emergency exit stairwell, used by the employees at all hours of the day and night. Thanks. If I had paid $79.99 a night, hey, so be it. But this is supposed to be a nice place that wants loyal, repeat customers... Well, you lost us. I don't recommend staying here. read more

View from the porch of the building: Very, Very Nice. View from my room: none (just a few, in your face, trees) Everything else: Meh. Family of four. Here for two nights: Room rate: $325/nt Arrived at 10pm. two young girls manning the desk, only interested in getting the credit card/ID. no " welcome to the...." No "will you be needing assistance with bags as we have no elevators for any floors." In the room (rm 934): closet doors do not slide, sink has numerous cracks along the entire base (but no leaks), Iron board is broken, so that a hot iron fell off the board. Reported to the front desk as this could be a significant liability issue let alone making the hotel appear like a cheap Days Inn. Still has not been removed/replaced. beds comfortable. Maid service: made the beds, did not throw out trash, did not replenish usu soap/shampoo. had to call for that as well as towels. Concierge: excellent. asked her via tel about bike rentals: she said "we don't have them, but I can get them delivered in 1/2 hr." she set it up and even got us a small discount, all without any fuss. Will we come back : To MV: Yes. To this hotel:Not even at 1/2 the price unless there is a complete overhaul of management, which actually tries to manage the consumer experience via inspections and appropriate training, and creating a true "hotel culture." Apparent from the reviews that if you have a large scale event, you get the 4 star tx. Otherwise not so much. .i.e if you are exxon mobil and having an event, probably the right place. Just spent three awful days at the hotel. I had a standard king size room that was small, dirty and poorly kept. The rugs were so dirty we didn't step on them in bare feet. The housekeeping was dreadful and when they didn't refresh the tissue box I called and they brought us half a box of tissues. Can you believe for $600 a night they send half a box. We ate at the hotel Resturant which was horrible. The prices were high and the food was dreadful. We ordered the avocado and crab salad, when I asked for more toast the manager said he would get some. We are still waiting for the toast. We understand the season is short but this was robbery at its best. Just a terrible experience. Go anywhere but here, as it will surely disappoint read more

We looked at many other places to stay in Edgartown, and this is hands-down the best place - from the view to the quality of food at the restaurant. We stayed for 5 days, and it got better each day. I'll start with the good: 1. Concierges Darlene and Jill - they are the best concierge team I've ever met and I travel about twice a month for business and leisure. They are friendly, accommodating and remember your name. And, they get stuff done! 2. Bartender in the Water Street restaurant, Adam - he was very friendly and helpful. We canceled dinner reservations one evening at a nice place in town to sit at the bar and have dinner at the hotel. Food was delicious and service was great. 3. The view - there wasn't a better view in Edgartown. The front porch is an unbeatable place to sit (though it would be even better if the hotel was allowed to serve drinks and food out there - you can still order inside and take them out). 4. The rooms - we had a very nice room, which we became happier with over the course of the week. It was a handicapped room, so everything, including the tub was very low to the ground. But the view was amazing, and the room was a good size. Now, some areas for improvement: 1. The pool - while it is a nice pool, the service was somewhat sub-par. Even though the pool was getting crowded at 10 am, the pool snack bar didn't open until 11:00/11:30. When we did order food, the server said they had no honey mustard, ranch or other sauce for chicken fingers - just ketchup. I found that a little surprising since they offer salads. 2. The rooms - as I said, we liked our room more and more throughout the week, but the carpet was dirty and the mini bar was empty. There was no water in the room. Also, for $595 per night, I would have expected better toiletries.... I've stayed in low-budget hotels that offer Bath & Bodyworks shampoo. 3. Room service - need to stay open for room service later than 9pm. Maid service was very poor. We got back to the room one day at 5pm and still hadn't had service. Most days when they did come, they left dirty plastic cups (with 3 inches of liquid and floating fruit) stacked up on the bar as if we might want to come back to them! 4. Restaurant/bar service - overall, this was good. But, a couple of instances when we asked for 2 bottles of water and the server came back that they could only find one... really?! The service in Henry's bar was just okay as the bartender was not very friendly and we always felt like we were putting him out. With just a few minor improvements, especially around service, would make this place 5-star worthy. The view and the really stand-out employees there make it a place that I would stay again. read more

Let me start off with a positive, the hotel was very accommodating in changing my reservation for me last minute due to poor weather conditions, and I was very appreciate of that. The front desk agents were very nice and informative, and they even allowed me to check in early at 11am with no additional charge. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end! Now for the bad...first of all, walking into the room, there was a significant temperature change from the outside to the inside. It was warm and muggy in the room, and it was at least a 5-10 degrees hotter in the room compared to outside. I shrugged it off, made sure all the A/C setting were correct, then we left the room to start our adventures for the day. Once we got back to the room, all three of us were extremely warm and completely uncomfortable. I called the front desk to let them know about the A/C, and they sent maintenance to look at it. They changed the filter and gauged the temperature and immediately said the temp was already going down (yet there was no change in the room). So we left once again, and we ventured out to do more sightseeing. Once again, we got back, and it was miserable!!! The sheets on the bed were moist from the warmth in the room, and we were all uncomfortable. I called the front desk, and they switched rooms for us. I was extremely happy, until I walked into the new room, and I was still extremely hot and my arms were sweaty after only a few minutes in the room. I called to inform the front desk, and they sent a fan up and gauged the A/C in the new room. Once again, the maintenance guy said it was cooling down, yet I was looking at the temp gauge over his shoulder and read 75.3 degrees!!! How is that cooler?!?! So after we left for a third time, and we came back after dinner to the new room and had to open the door just to get the temperature down. Since when did we have to depend on the outdoor temp to cool down a room that was over $400?!?! So I called the front desk once again, and "the manager on duty," aka the front desk clerk, informed me that the maintenance guys and bellman said the room was cool and A/C was working. When I asked if the A/C gets below 75 degrees, he said yes. Well, when maintenance was in the room it clearly stated 75.3, and it is still the same temperature, so how is the A/C functioning properly when it is still hot in the room. Needless to say, I haven't even been here for a full night's stay, and I am ready to check out. I will not EVER come back to this hotel, and I will not recommend it to anyone, unless sweating is what they like to do. read more

The pictures made it look much nicer then it really was. There were sunflower seeds in my kids bed when we got there late at night. It said queen beds but they were not. They were supposed to be pillow top beds but it was pillow tops thrown on top of a mattress. They didn't replace dirty glasses with clean ones. On a positive note the staff was very friendly. Did get free breakfast for the sunflower seeds in the bed. read more

I had my first experience with this hotel two years ago. My parents have lived on the island for 20 years, and I was putting together a silent auction for a charity fundraiser so I thought of doing a MV package. I got donations from local places like Wheel Happy and Linda Jeans, and needed a hotel to complete the package. They refused to donate or even talk to me. Granted, this charity is located in Boston and it may be their policy not to give "out of town". Then when I got engaged, I looked at every venue on the island and set up an appointment with the Harbor View. The person who toured us was late, and seemed not to care about us whatsoever. Still, it's a lovely view and a nice hotel so my then-fiance booked a gorgeous room for our wedding night as a nice treat. HERE IS WHERE THE BIGGEST PROBLEM LIES: When he reserved the room, they said that they cannot let us check in before 4pm even though it was our wedding day. We told them that there is no possible way for us to check in before our own wedding, and they told us MULTIPLE TIMES (yes, I called back a second time just to double check) that it didn't matter because we could check in as late as we wanted after our wedding and that "someone is always at the front desk, 24/7". I was really uncomfortable with this, but was told by them that it would not be a problem with us checking in around 1:00am (we had an after party so I specifically mentioned that 1am would probably be our ETA that night). And I was right on the money! We got there a few minutes after 1am, me in my wedding dress and my new husband tired and lugging our bags in his fancy suit... NO ONE TO BE FOUND. We waited around in our wedding attire for over 20 minutes looking around for anyone to help. It was the least romantic way to end our wedding night, and we were exhausted. I'm an Events Manager so I never get upset about anything that pops up last minute, but this was beyond terrible customer service. This is one hotel that truly doesn't care about their guests, which is really disappointing. Also, the window in our room broke open the next day and it wasn't warm out.. just sayin. read more

For my first visit to Martha's Vineyard, this place was the best introduction to the island! Located at the tip of Edgartown, right across the path from the Edgartown Lighthouse, this spectacular, homey hotel was a relaxing retreat from the city. Just a stones throw from the main street, you could get there within a few minutes, but then retire to the sanctuary that were rocking chairs on the front porch and sip a pink and green cocktail while watching the clouds roll across the sky. Folks, we were a few steps from heaven here. The rooms were actually better than I had expected - spacious, clean, balconies/patios and decorated inoffensively with a sailing/resort theme. The doors were old and rickety which I found totally charming and often surprised me when they did not resist my hand when opening it (silly detail, but I literally thought about it every time we entered/exited our room). HVH has a communal pool with a pool bar that was just getting ready to open while we were there. Henry's bar is a great place to meet other vacationers or just share a drink with your boo. There is also a cozy seating area in the lobby with a fireplace that offers board games and historic reading material. My most favorite place, however, was the wrap around porch with the multiple blue rocking chairs and comfortable seating overlooking the water. Though the prices can be steep during peak season, it is definitely worth staying here to really enjoy the total relaxation the vineyard has to offer. read more

This is a great location in Edgartown, the large porch has beautiful views. The lobby and bar are really nice. You will be able to walk to lighthouse beach and Edgartown easily. The downside was that for the price -- and what is advertised on the the website -- the place is rather dated. The rooms are not that nice, and only a small portion have the "harbor view" described (the rest have pool or parking lot views!). As others note, the staff is rather junior. They did not clean our 2-bedroom suite one of the two nights I stayed there with my family, only stopped by at 5:30 pm to see if we needed towels. They forgot to call me a cab after I called to order one the night before (I nearly missed my ferry). The air conditioning is window units for the most part. Small things, but good (and expensive) hotels get the small things right. It's not a bad place if you have modest expectations, but its not exactly a luxurious hotel with water views either, which you might expect from the website and prices. I'd give it three stars because the staff was very nice, but the truth is I expected better. read more

I first stayed at the Harbor View in 1999 and enjoyed it. I just got back from a trip today. The service has gone downhill dramatically. At over $1,000 a night for a suite, I expect my luggage to be delivered to my room. Instead I'm told to come back with the room number once I've checked in, and a very nice but surprised valet agrees to send it up after two requests. Be ready to call multiple times for service. They will tell you that they are going to call you back, but they never do. Your best bet is to go to the main desk. We had to switch rooms for the last night of our trip, and they pushed us out of our room without giving us another room to stay in, despite the $1,080 we were paying each night. Our daughter needed a nap and we ended up driving around the island so she could rest. Crazy. I get better service elsewhere even when I'm paying for a normal room. Save yourself some money and hassle and avoid this hotel like the plague. read more

My husband and I stayed here over labor day weekend and found the service at the hotel to be basic and below the standard of similar luxury hotels. For example: turn down service only gave us towels and did not clean our room, no shuttle offered from ferry, no warning of huge wedding the weekend of our stay (NOISE & loads of people), no welcome amenities, no water bottles, no bikes. We arrived Friday night at 10pm to learn the kitchen was closed and there was nothing they could do to help us get dinner. I highly recommend the White Elephant in Nantucket over the Harbor View. The best part of the Harbor View is the location - everything else is completely overpriced. The water in the shower was lukewarm at best. The bathroom fixtures are comparable to a $100/nt hotel. We could hear everything going on in the room across the hall. The sheer curtains in the bedroom did nothing to help us sleep through the blinding sunrise at 5:30am. Save your money and stay elsewhere! read more

Fantastic location. Not in the middle of Main Street makes this a quiet hotel but walkable to all the restaurants. We really enjoyed the rooms. The staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable. Pricey but you get what you pay for. We stayed in two rooms for four days before moving our daughter into to college at Northeastern University fro CA. Great family adventure and vacation. read more

Staff was very nice we don't have kids but they had great things for children throughout the day like making s'mores and face painting. If the price does not matter, you might consider eating here. A small group of us went thinking the restaurant was open but the bar was our only choice. Tapas only; six for $70/person. Individual tapas are available at $15-$42 per item. The four or six selection is available per person only. If the price does not scare you, the tastes are delightful. Wine is served with a very light pour and price per glass is quite high. The renovation to the bar and dining area is dark and depressing, more like Manhatten and not at all Island Style. The new presentation of our old favorite is a huge disappointment. We will not return. read more

Fantastic location and beautiful harbor views are certainly the best part of this place. The staff is polite, nice and engaging. The neighborhood around the property is beautiful and tranquil. Short walk to the center of town is nice. The pool is nice but completely overrun with children all day long. The fitness center is barely hanging on the edge of being useful and the towel service in there is basically nonexistent. The hotel itself has a nice bar, but it and the restaurants are over priced and generally poorly managed and mediocre service. The hotel itself is in very poor condition - carpet needed replaced 10 years ago, the bedding is slightly comfortable and the hvac systems are damp and musty. Fundamentally, this place has seen much better days and could likely use a new management team and/or ownership. Overpriced and would highly think of alternate accommodations when coming to the Vineyard read more

Have stayed here six or seven times. The staff is very nice and helpful but the hotel itself leaves a lot to be desired. The main hotel and rooms are very run down. The cusinons on the porch furniture look like they came from a fraternity house. It's unbelievable considering the $600 plus a night that I paid. This year I finally looked at the scared furniture, the room door that would barely close, the peeling paint around my balcony and thought enough is enough. Not going back. No amenities like water in rooms, mints on pillows... None of the little touches that would make the declining conditions bareable. Staff is only reason they are getting two stars. read more

We visited my favorite place Martha's Vineyard, in October to celebrate our marriage. We went with five other dear old friends and I was excited to introduce them to this magical island. I spoke of the Harbor View so often we all decided to stay there. I stayed there a few years ago and had the most marvelous time. Beautiful room with a view, great staff and the amenities were boundless. This time around not so much. Room was to be ready at 3 and wasn't ready until 5. Our other friends could not get into their room until 6 and another couple found glass chards on the carpet and housekeeping could not vacuum them up enough to avoid injury. So lucky friends were given a condo on the property for no extra charge. Beautiful! Balcony. Large Windows. Fireplace. Just gorgeous. Our room was a closed off nothing of a room with indoor outdoor carpeting, a bathroom that had not been renovated ever and a HUGE AC machine on the floor near our closet that was not only unsightly but noisy. Definitely had a view of the lighthouse but it was out of this little nothing window! What happened to the balcony, big windows, etc.? It was a nightmare but the good thing was we spent more time out than in. The staff, with the exception of the desk people, could not be more helpful or courteous. And yes the chairs on the front porch were a perfect touch. However, this trip to my Storybook Island just didn't cut it because of the Harbor View. Best thing about the Harbor View? Overrated. The location can't be beat but what you should expect is a Days Inn plopped in front of a nice view. My room was in the Mayhew, the three story attachment to the main building. At $300 a night, my AC could not cool the room and the bathroom vent was clogged with filth. The screen door on the balcony would not lock and my luggage was left sitting outside because no one delivered it to the room. The Mayhew attachment has no elevator so be forewarned. You are lugging your stuff up. I expected better, and perhaps this is the best you can book on the island but good grief man. read more

Positives: Exceptional View from the porch and benches across the street. Beautiful grounds and nice pool Enough parking for second week in September. Negatives: Chapter 1: Room is average. No safe. Exceptional view from the porch is not what we got. Instead, an exceptional ground view of the electrical panel and well groomed shrubs facing the side street. Chapter 2: Running toilet; second phone call on day 2 sent maintenance over and got fixed. Bathroom needs to be renovated. Cracked caulking around the bathtub. Good thing we didn't have anyone staying below us. Chapter 3: Housekeeping was hit or miss. Second day, it was done; third day we had to ask! I asked the front desk if we had to request housekeeping to clean the room, but did not get a straight answer. Apparently, there was a shortage of soap, but a surplus of shampoo and conditioner. Chapter 4: On the 4th (and final day) we asked if we could come back to shower after check out as we were planning on going to the beach after we checked out. the answer everywhere else that I've asked this question has been "yes". You guessed it. The answer from Harbor View is "No, we do not have a public shower facility". So as soon as you check out, you are back to being "the public" and not a "former guest" Chapter 5: Upon leaving, we did not get a "how was your stay?" By now, I would have been surprised if we did. I don't blame the people that work there for these issues. They are mostly temporary hires from overseas. I blame whoever manages this place, For such a beautiful and pricey place, I certainly expected more. However, I don't think Mgt cares as this place sells itself with its exceptional view. read more

Price very high, service very poor! Toilet didn't flush, no maid service in over 24 hours, noisy hallway noise in rooms and rooms with worn furniture. Musty smell in building. Granted, we were in the Mayhew building which I think was cheaper (only choice given as I was going to a physician's conference and these rooms were reserved at a "special group rate.") I imagine this building just gets neglected, as we paid about $420 per night instead of their more usual $750 and up per night, but I have had better service at a Motel 8! On the positive side, the grounds are beautiful and hotel has many nice touches (porch with live music, nice restaurant and overall good ambience) but this hotel is coasting on it's breath-taking views and charm, not on anything resembling proper customer service! read more

Thanksgiving at the Harbor View was a dirty mess. First off we waited a half an hour to be seated. Secondly, the buffet food stations were unclean, with food splattered all over the table cloth where guests were to serve themselves. The salad dressings and butter serving dishes were a mess. And to top it off.....the person serving the turkey used his plastic gloved hand to hold the turkey as he cut with the other. They were obviously understaffed. Not a classy affair by any stretch. My family and I were very disappointed and will not return. read more

I'm very disappointed with the hotel. I stay there a couple months ago with my wife and I asked for chocolate covered strawberries to be delivered to the room with milk and cookies before we arrived. I ran to the hotel to tell him that we were there but we would be back in about 2 to 3 hours to check in they gave them plenty of time to get the good he's in the room. When we arrived into the room there was nothing there I then had to call down and ask for them. They were then brought up about 45 minutes later. When I called and made that request two weeks prior I told them not to put nuts on any of the cookies or strawberries. When they were delivered both the cookies had nuts on them and the strawberries. This wasn't just for a nice getaway going to Martha's Vineyard this was more of a baby Moon. I called the front desk and told him that they weren't supposed to have nuts and they said that I would have to pay for a new order of each. So I didn't and we wasted the strawberries and cookies. Room we were in was very nice except for the AC unit, that was falling off the wall. The AC unit was not a window unit it was built into the wall like most hotels except the cover kept falling off. I contacted the manager of the hotel after we had left by phone and email and still have not heard from him several months later. Very disappointed. read more

filthy rooms! there are stains on the bed linens and the carpet, the vents are caked with dust, the sink has a big scratch in it, the toilet is repulsive looking, the shower is dingy, the fridge is coated with dust, all the furniture is chipped, the lampshade on the nightstand is ripped, the chairs on the balcony are well-worn, and the curtains are broken. to top it off, nobody cleans up around the pool! the pool area is strewn with trash and towels are left on chairs for hours! read more
