This hotel is beautiful, quiet, and has so many lovely amenities. The hotel is about 15 minutes outside of the main town but the shuttles leave the property every half an hour and leave town on the hour. It's very convenient. They also have the following amenities: -free kayaks on the bay side -complimentary car (only 1 and it books up fast) -sherry, port, and cheese every day at 4 pm -harbor tour, sconset tour, great point tour, and culinary experience -private beach on the Atlantic side (absolutely beautiful and quiet) -bikes -coffee, tea, pastries, and granola for breakfast The location is breathtaking and if you like nature and beach, this is definitely the spot you want to be on the island. The downside is that without a car, you're a little isolated as your only transportation options are bikes and the shuttle. The rooms are also on the small side. We had a room with 2 twins and it was well laid out, but the bathroom and sink area is small. read more

We were heartbroken by how Wauwinet treated us during what was supposed to be a special birthday trip. We drove 5 hours from NY only to find all ferries to Nantucket canceled due to dangerous weather. We stayed overnight nearby hoping to get on a boat the next day--still no luck. When we called the hotel, they told us weather isn't a valid reason for a refund and even said, "this is one of the ways we make money." For a 5-star hotel, that was shocking. No empathy, no flexibility--not even a credit. They coldly told us to fly instead, despite the wind and my fear of flying. This trip was completely out of our control, but they made no effort to help. It was cruel and disappointing. If you're traveling to Nantucket, beware--this hotel puts policy over people. My wife and I spent a night at the Wauwinet after our flight out of Nantucket was cancelled due to poor weather and it was the perfect ending to our trip in Nantucket. What an oasis of luxury! The staircase up to the rooms felt like we were on the Titanic with the beautiful paintings leading the way to our room. While the room was lovely (and the bed super comfy), it is the amenities that put the Wauwinet in a tier amongst itself. The private beach offers serene views and relaxing moments within footsteps of your room. We enjoyed coffee on the dock and walked the beach to sounds of light waves crashing against the shore. The complimentary pastries and coffee truly hit the spot as we started the day. I wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the kayaks and to explore the water. BEWARE when booking any reservation. I booked a room last August for the weekend of June 1. In March (3 months before booked arrival), I needed to cancel this reservation. The hotel informed me that they will keep 10% of my room rate EVEN IF they book the room again (which I'd bet they do). When I asked the manager to explain the rationale of this policy to me, she merely repeated over and over that it doesn't matter what happens in the future, that this fee was for holding the room. She agreed that they could end up making extra money beyond the expensive room rate but that in fact is their policy. Given what they charge, I'd think twice before booking here. read more

We *mostly* enjoyed our stay here but there was a lack of consistency in hospitality in my opinion. Some staff were friendly and some seemed as if they didn't want us there. A short orientation would be nice upon arrival highlighting the beach path, services and even little things like storage containers beneath the bed. Get the next size up on rooms and a bay view to enjoy the property. Even as inn guests we weren't able to secure reservations for dinner at the hotel restaurant. I understand seating is currently limited but excellent hospitality management would prioritize inn guests, something I expect for 4-5 star properties. We ate dinner at American Seasons which was just as good if not better than the inn but not convenient. Having a staff member tell me he told everyone to make early reservations was no more than "I told you so" which just didn't sit well with me and wasn't accurate. It is a beautiful property that just needs more consistency in hospitality management in my opinion. read more

We have been coming to the Wauwinet every year for the last decade. We are practically treated like family. The accommodations are elegant for an older island property and the service is always personal and friendly. The location on Nantucket Bay has a lovely front lawn and gorgeous sunsets. The restaurant, Toppers has excellent breakfast lunch and dinner menus. For breakfast, try the turkey hash, for lunch it's either the lobster-crab cakes or the heavenly burger. Start your dinner with a half dozen Retsyo oysters, harvested across the bay from your seat on the lawn. Every year seems to get better. read more

We booked 3 rooms for a party of 5 for 3 nights in May. Each one of us received different information from different staff at The Wauwinet/White Elephant which made it difficult to plan anything in advance. I was told the following by Laura: 1. Kayak is open 2. We can cycle to Great Point using the hotel's complimentary bicycle 1 other friend of mine was told the following by Jeenie: 3. Kayak is closed 4. You can cycle to Great Point using the hotel's complimentary bicycle Another friend who communicated with Al was told: 5. Kayak is closed 6. You cannot bike to Great Point as it is closed 7. You can cycle using a tricycle to Sconset and park the bike at the top of the road (from Wauwinet) before doing the Bluff walk. At this point we decided to just wait until we arrive at the hotel to plan our itinerary. When we arrived, we found out that no 1, 2, 4, 6, 7 are all wrong information given by their staff that was done over the phone. The Wauwinet has a Pre Arrival Concierge which unfortunately does not serve any purpose at all as they never call you nor do they put any effort in following up on any conversation that was left of via email. I thought they would be checking in on us to see if everything is clarified upon our arrival but not single call from them until we leave. We also learnt about a tour guide that The Wauwinet provides for their guests one day before our arrival and that they have an antique car that will take their guests around for the tour. All of this information was relayed to us by the shuttle bus driver, not the reception or concierge. We missed out on the tour of course. No orientation is made upon arrival. No one showed us the two doors to get to Toppers ie. main door and back door near the restroom for hotel guests. We only found out about it after dinner. The hotel has a shuttle bus into town that leaves every half an hour eg 7pm, 730pm, 8pm. It is at least 20mins to town. Breakfast is alright - their waiting staff lack warmth and were not very attentive. I waited for 15 mins before I was served almost every morning during the stay. Our bedroom is very comfortable and clean. Their Pratesi linen is a winner to me. House keeping is satisfactory. They have beautiful Loccitane shampoo, conditioner and body gel for the bathroom which I love. You'll get different standard of hospitality from The Wauwinet's staff. Some are very nice and warm while some do not even greet you Good morning or Good night when they see you which I find very odd for a luxury hotel. For almost $800/night, this hotel is far from having the standard or quality of a luxury hotel. Alot of potential but need a better management and training for the staff. I will think twice before going to this hotel again esp with that rate. read more

Charming, warm, cozy, delightful, welcoming....can't say enough about how much we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Everything we've heard about Nantucket was all bundled up in this adorable Inn. Staff was wonderful, engaging, and so helpful. We especially enjoyed Talia as she went above and beyond in making sure our stay was all about COMFORT and taking advantage of the unique traits of the island. Our room was amazing...fluffy comforter, lots of pillows, thick bathrobes, cozy bed, etc! And our view of the water was beautiful and so peaceful. The lawn takes you out onto the dock and along the beach. We also took advantage of the complimentary bikes and rode to a nearby trail. One afternoon we had complimentary wine and cheese, another afternoon we had delightful warm apple cider! In the mornings, we looked forward to freshly brewed coffee & delicious pastries. For an extra treat, we got a tour of part of the island in their "Woody" car. Our driver, "Captain" was incredibly impressive with the wealth of historical information he shared about Nantucket. I stayed at Wauwinet for two nights near the end of the season once. On the first night my friend and I stayed in a first floor room in the main building. Although our room didn't have ocean view, we had a lovely patio and could easily walk across the beautiful lawn to watch the ocean. The room was adorable, though a bit small, the furnishing was delicate and cozy. The second night, we stayed in a one-bedroom cottage which came with a decent size living room, a large bedroom, a dressing room and a bathroom. It was nice and spacious, but somehow it didn't feel as "comfortable" as the room we had the previous night. But I think the weather we had contributed to our preference. Since we went toward the very end of the season, it wasn't exactly warm and sunny anymore... hence the cottage felt a bit too cold in temperature and atmosphere. The location of the Inn can be a hit or miss, depending on what type of vacation you are looking for. Basically, it's far away from town, with no other establishment around except for their own restaurant and a spa. You can commute by their free mini-bus service (which I believe only runs till 9 or 10 pm) and by taxi. If you enjoy being out and about in town during the night, you will find it inconvenient. The hotel itself provides a lot of activities you can sign up for, and free port and cheese tasting by the fire place...etc etc. There is a internet-wired computer for guests, and I believe some books to read as well. There are two reason why i didn't give them five stars... 1) the staffing arrangement is racially disturbing and I felt quite uncomfortable the whole time I was there 2) the restaurant, one of the reason why we went there, was very disappointing, which is explained in my review for the restaurant. read more

My husband and I spend 4 nights at The Wauwinet during the first part of our honeymoon. We had a bay view room on the second floor with a great view of the lawn and bay. Our room was quaint and lovely. We could not have asked for anything more. The hotel was very accommodating prior to our trip, setting up dinner reservations and massages, which saved us the stress of trying to do those things before our big day. The first night we were brought congratulatory chocolate covered strawberries by the front desk staff, which was a welcomed surprised. We enjoyed the daily port and cheese in the library. The lawn overlooking the bay was a great relaxation spot. It was a great location to enjoy a cocktail or read a book. The staff was very welcoming and made us feel very taken care of. The shuttle to town runs every hour, which worked perfectly for the days we did not have a car. We will definitely return someday to this perfect inn by the sea. read more

I just stayed here for a wedding weekend and am so incredibly impressed with the hospitality this hotel's employees extend to their guests. Not just fulfilling needs and requests but showing a level of kindness with every move they make. They are genuinely kind people. I especially have to shout out to the tall male bartender in Toppers bar, as well as a woman who I believe was the food and beverage director, and many many servers, especially one named Doyd (sp?). I was helping my best friend who was MOH in the wedding but on crutches and in a lot of pain, and every time I went to ask the servers for extra help- a chair, or ice packs, or fancy bottled water because that's all she drinks- they never hesitated, never rolled their eyes as they walked away....they just kept smiling from the heart. The rooms here are charming and lovely, and the beds are extremely comfortable. They do an adorable turn-down service, you'll come back to your room at night to chocolate on your pillow and soft music playing, and towels changed out yet again. The food and drink- they are known for their wine selection, and for good reason. It's very impressive. I stuck to omelettes and the fresh green juice for breakfast- awesome. Dinner at the wedding reception was the best wedding meal I've ever had (butternut squash soup, lobster and braised beef entree). I don't know if I'll ever make it back here, but.....I sure hope so. read more

I have to ask three times to have fresh sheets, still at almost 10:00 pm I asked why the sheets were not fresh, then, they decided to come to change the sheets we couldn't even have privacy When they tell you everything is going to be okay with reservations of cars and restaurants don't y believe them. Management will tell you at the end of the day, there was a confusion. No tennis courts as is advertised. No customer service. read more

Let me just say that this review is about the Spa not Topper's or the Hotel. My parents have been vacationing in Nantucket for more than 30 years, so when my mother's 70th birthday fell on our vacation, I immediately thought of The Wauwinet as the perfect place to stage her birthday gift. Now, I am by no means wealthy - but I wanted to do something special for my mom, not only because it was a big birthday (7-0!), but also because she's always buying me fancy things while never buying them for herself. Anyway, I thought she would really enjoy a massage and facial treatment at The Wauwinet spa, followed by lunch outside. The Wauwinet has always been one of my mom's (and mine, and my dad's) favorite places on the island. It's elegant and soothing and luxurious, which is exactly the atmosphere I wanted to put my mother in her for her birthday! Unfortunately, things didn't work out like that... After dropping my mom off for her massage and facial treatment, I returned to pick her up and have lunch. When I asked her how it went, she was reluctant to tell me. My mom is not a complainer, but I could tell something wasn't right. I pressed her. She said the massage had gone really badly - that the masseuse seemed to not want to touch her, and that things had gotten worse after that. Needless to say, I was very disappointed - I wanted the best for my mom, and of course the massage wasn't cheap, either! I didn't want to complain on behalf of my mom over her dissatisfying experience that day - I knew she'd be upset if I said something to the management about it, and I didn't want to upset her on top of her bad massage, so I let it drop. Lunch was very good - the server was incredibly warm and responsive. A week later, when I got home from vacation, I kept thinking about the massage and how disappointed I was that my mom hadn't enjoyed herself. It just didn't sit right with me. So I decided to call and make a complaint. I spoke, the manager on duty. I explained the situation. He apologized, indifferently, then looked up the massage reservation in their system. The masseuse, he said, was one of their "best and most experienced," and he seemed to find it impossible to believe that she could have given my mom a bad massage or had an off day at the table. When I said as much, he bristled. I hadn't called expecting the Wauwinet to offer us a complimentary massage or anything like that, but I certainly didn't expect unconcealed skepticism about my claim. Now that I was getting so much resistance from manager, I started to get a little angry. After all, the Wauwinet holds itself out to be a world-class hotel and spa, and its prices reflect that. I felt I should be given more consideration, and I was not getting any from the manger. This made me even more angry. The manager finally and reluctantly offered to buy my parents a round of drinks if they came back out. I then mentioned that I had worked in the service industry for many years, and that I didn't think he was handling my complaint very graciously, and as anyone who has worked in the service industry knows, it costs places like The Wauwinet nothing to buy you a drink. That was not good enough, and I told the manager that. He said there was nothing more he could do but would let the general manager know and they would call me back the next day to discuss things further. He never called. I probably wouldn't have written this review if the general manager had called me, as promised. But since The Wauwinet doesn't seem to want to handle its guest experience issues graciously, I want to put it out there that one of my favorite places on Nantucket really disappointed me on this one. While The Wauwinet is a special place, there are a lot of other special places on Nantucket more eager to ensure that their guests are blown away by their experiences there. So don't waste your money at this spa. read more

This is something that all should know when making a reservation at this hotel: they are completely unforgiving if it turns out that a family emergency requires that you cancel your trip. The hotel has a 30 day cancellation policy, which is clearly stated. Unfortunately, an elderly parent has just been diagnosed with cancer, and they refused even to give us a credit for a future stay [unless they "resell" the room, which is very unlikely at this point]. While we do understand why the cancellation policy exists, there is also a need for compassion. Overall, I had a delightful stay at The Wauwinet. The staff was wonderful and quite frankly, more helpful than the front desk. The hotel itself was beautiful! It had the feeling of stepping back in time. I stayed in a room overlooking the bay and the view alone was worth the trip and the price tag. After getting settled, I explored the grounds on foot and was blown away. You can spend a full day exploring and still not cover the whole area. It was raining most of my stay so I can only imagine what it would have been like in better weather. Ok, now the not so good. The Toppers in my opinion was disappointing. The food was good, but even the dishes that I enjoyed were not great. I was expecting amazing based on the reviews but I'm sorry to say I found it to be an expensive and forgettable dinning experience. I decided to spring for a massage at the spa during my stay and instead of feeling rejuvenated, it ended up being very uncomfortable. I made small talk with my masseuse which was a big mistake on my part. I ended up listening to a full 20min of hearing how rude the guests and how 'new money' is destroying what used to be a relaxing vacation spot. I have to say, it was interesting to hear her views but not while I was face down on a massage table. I do however see her point. Any frequent visitor of Nantucket will inevitably witness the temper tantrums of the 'I have lots of money' population which can be seen and loudly heard no matter where you go. It comes with the territory when you visit Nantucket so keep that in mind. Bottom line, The Wauwinet is an extraordinary hotel and I look forward to returning this season. But I had a traveling companion who brought her car....Well, I am traveling again to Nantucket as I do just about every year for a conference. It is not located at this hotel. Just to inquire, I called the desk for reservations to see if there was any way to accommodate a special request. They were not helpful. If you do not follow the set plan for your day, no breakfast or coffee for you, no way you can escape your confines earlier than planned 9:30 AM shuttle run unless you call in a cab...I though this was a higher end hotel and used to helping accommodate special needs. I guess I will spend my vacation dollars elsewhere! read more

Fantastic Romantic Couples Only Restaurant and Hotel This is a hotel that studied the manual on "how to create the most pleasing experience for our guests". The launch from the White Elephant hotel on the west side of town is a beautiful scenic trip through the harbor. Nice and casual. Not a speedboat. Sit on the side that you board on for the best view during the trip. The food is absolutely first rate, and priced accordingly. Toppers, the restaurant, is not a place to go if you are on a budget. You can tell when you stroll through the parking lot, and see that there is a space reserved for just BMW's. But, it is a meal that you will remember when you reflect on your trip to Nantucket. The food is fresh and prepared with elegance and perfection. The staff is very pleasant and fast. The food is delicous. I have absolutely no negative comments regarding this eatery. The grounds are beautiful and scenic. You can see from one end of the island to the other on the dock. Dusk is a great time to visit. Try to eat before 6:30 pm, so you can go out after your dinner onto the grounds, enjoy the sunset with a cocktail, and take a lot of pictures. This will be one of the highlites of your trip. Hints to my followers: BRING A CAMERA! The views are spectacular of the harbour. This is a couples only resort. Children under 12 will not enjoy themselves, and neither will the other guests. Come out before sunset, and get a spot early in a loungechair to enjoy the sunset. These chairs fill up quickly. Walk out on the dock and say hello to the boat hands. They bring in, and send off the launch from town. They are bored and enjoy conversing with the guests. The hotel is on a penninsula. It is a bit of a far drive from town, and a little tricky. If you can take the launch, do it. Otherwise, taking a taxi will cost you a pretty penny, and the traffic gets busy on the main roads. Go out to the front of the hotel for pictures. The "English Cottage" look is great for family photos! Also, get pictures of the art on the grounds. Very interesting. Very interesting. read more

The Wauwinet exceeded our expectations in every respect, and there is a strong case to be made that it is the best place to stay on Nantucket. First, the location looking out on both the ocean side and the bay is spectacular. There is an hourly free shuttle to the town, taking 20 minutes, so it is convenient to see the sights of the harbor, the Whaling Museum, sample town restaurants, etc. But it's nice to be outside the bustle of the harbor in an idyllic setting. (I imagine it's even more attractive to be able to choose bustle or peacefulness at the height of the season.) The Wauwinet has a beautiful lawn sloping down to the water and lovely public rooms to read and relax. Perhaps most important, the staff is incredibly gracious and professional. Topping the list for us was "Captain Rob", a Nantucket native, who is knowledgeable about the history of the island and its wildlife. We took three escorted tours with Rob -- a boat tour of the bay, a trip to Great Point Lighthouse which featured seals and other wildlife, and a trip to the historic town of Siaconset. Overall, this was a most relaxing and pleasurable way to enjoy Nantucket. read more

Went to Nantucket for a wedding and stayed at the Wauwinet. The experience was excellent in every regard. The food was great, the beds were comfortable, the house was clean, the service was great and personable, the property is gorgeous. We had many good memories there but beyond anything else, I had forgotten a shirt for the wedding I was attending - rather than calling me a cab (which was my request) the owner personally took me in to town to buy a shirt and then personally dropped me off at the church. I would have given this place 4 stars but the daytime concierge makes this a 3 star review for me. We stayed here 3 nights and everyone on the staff was very nice except for Daniel the concierge. I did not ever see a smile or a friendly look from him. His excuse for his rudeness was that maybe he was busy. The evening concierge was very accommodating and very nice. We've stayed at the Wauwinet twice before and it never disappoints. The place is beautiful and restful. The staff is helpful but not intrusive. The rooms are impeccably clean (albeit some much smaller than the price warrants). It's costly but worth it. Topper's, the onsite restaurant, is superb in every way! Don't be scared off by how far it is from town, an hourly shuttle and a boat ride make it simple and easy to get back and forth. No car needed unless you want to do more exploring on the island. It's heavenly to be positioned between the ocean and the harbor at this gorgeous island oasis. And try the Wauwinet-ini's. Delicious cocktail! Staff's superb. Go go go!!! read more

They really do have spiders in their rooms, they really don't have coffee for their guests, and they really did forget to pick us up on our arrival. There were many other issues as well. I never write negative reviews but I feel very compelled to do so just to let other newlyweds know that it may not meet their expectations either. My husband and I stayed there this past September right after we were married. Granted, the weather was pretty bad as Hurricane Jose was headed up the coast. Cape Air didn't send my luggage with me on our flight so when we arrived at The Wauwinet I asked the front desk for a toothbrush (I didn't get my luggage until the following day). They said they didn't think they had any, but would check. They never got back to me. I also thought they may do something because we excitedly shared we were just married, but they barely congratulated us. Then, they woke us up at 8:00AM on the morning of our departure to clean the room even though checkout wasn't until 11:00AM. The icing on the cake was that weeks later, we learned my husband's sister actually called the hotel, arranged to pay for the stay as our wedding gift, and asked that there be a card and message surprising us with this....we were given no message. I was mortified when she reached out and asked if my credit card had been charged too and explained the gift. We hadn't thanked her yet. I've stayed at 5 star hotels across the U.S. and this was my worst experience at one. The lack of hospitality and service was surprising and disappointing. I would not recommend it to anyone. Very poorly managed property. Terrible service. Uncaring, unfriendly staff. Joe, the shuttle operator was the only friendly, smiling face we've encountered in our 2 days of our current 3 night stay. Shirley, a waitress we had twice so far was the most incompetent wait person I've ever encountered. Decided to write this review because my husband and I are just fuming after returning from dinner in town, being told by the reception that not only are the restaurant and bar closed, we can't even get a drink through room service at 9:20pm! After not booking our stay at the White Elephant in town due to a wedding (owners) there, we decided to book their sister property, the Wauwinet. My husband specifically asked if there were any events at the hotel and was told no. Upon our arrival yesterday, we were informed the wedding rehearsal was being held here on Friday evening and the restaurant would be closed and you could get room service or must go into town 7.5 miles away. We returned on the shuttle at 9:20pm and were told everything at the hotel was closed ---including room service despite the restaurant manager and staff still on the premises inside the restaurant conducting a meeting. Outrageous treatment! You're stuck out in the middle of nowhere. This is an extremely overpriced hotel and restaurant. Rooms in the main building are very small. The beach is down the road, leased for hotel guests but in front of private homes. Food is overpriced. But by far, the service is the worst! read more

What a beautiful place to stay during our trip to Nantucket! The staff is friendly, attentive, and cares about your every want and need! You can't help but feel at home here! To top it off, we discovered a unique wine here called the Oyster - a sauvignon blanc that restores local oyster reefs! Officially my new favorite wine now! read more
