This is our first time back here in 2014. We visited here at 12 Noon on Memorial Day ant the restaurant was not busy. There was only 1 waitress for the entire restaurant and we waited 45 minutes for or lunch. There were people that arrived after us that were served before us. The tomato soup tasted as if it was from a premised box, the open steak sandwich was served warm and the Cuban sandwich was served with jalapeños, which was not noted on the menu. When i first walked into the restaurant and sat down I figured the food and service would be mediocre, however I was pleasantly surprised. We started with the muscle appetizer which was extremely tasty. The pesto sauce was delicious and the muscles were not chewy at all. I then had the strip sirloin with the shrimp and was again surprised at how perfect the steak was prepared and the flavor of the vegetables with it. Went here on a Monday around 6 o'clock to find it was surprisingly dead, our party quickly found out why! Our male server was inattentive, drab, and could care less about being there. Food was decent but not great, small portions not worth the price. We asked what they had for dessert and he replied "not much"!! That was fine with me as I was ready to get out of there anyway. Food wise this place is very good. They have indoor and outside seating available. There is a place to sit in the back side with very comfortable cushion like chairs if you desire. I never had an issue with the food as I think its good quality. A little pricy but worth it in my opinion. Went here last night party of 6. Called ahead made reservation, inquired if pasta was gluten free, was told no, but ok to bring my own for guest who was young child. Server not very attentive, had to "wave her down " for refills on drinks, one app was very late. Ok, but when main course was served, none if it was for our table! Lots of confusion coming out of the kichen, we were not offered dessert menu, as server clearly saw ballons and presents. I spoke with server ALONE, told her was unhappy with service, the " manager" came over. Explained what had been going on, and that one of my guests( who works in the restaurant business) had also mention the poor attentiveness of the server, he returned with check holder, SLAMMED IT ON THE TABLE, POINTED TO MY GUEST AND SAID "YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER!" When I asked what he meant by that remark, he smirked, I stood up (all 5'1' of me) as he towered over me and he said I was "confronting him!" My guest (all 5'2' of her) also got up to ask what that remark aimed at her meant, HE actually was confronting 2 WOMEN! My fiancee then got up, said it was unfortunate the manager was making a scene over our displeasure with our service. I guess your not allowed to make negative comments to the staff of the obviously poorly managed restaurant and told him we would not be back!! read more

Stopped in here on 7/13 for my fiance's birthday because on the deck had a line out the door. Boy am I happy we ended up here! Service was friendly and attentive. Sat inside by the window. The ribs, crabmeat and spinach dip, and risotto balls were absolutely fantastic. The sweet chili sauce on the ribs was a nice change from typical bbq sauce and the ribs fell right off the bone they were so tender. My 8oz filet mignon was cooked perfectly and our friends had some chicken and pasta dish they also loved. My fiance got the crab cake appetizer to eat with his linguine tossed in clam sauce. Unfortunately he didn't love the crab cakes but said the clam sauce was amazing and plenty filling. Excited to go back. Only reason for four stars is when we were seated I moved in next to the window and there was a bug hanging out over there. I think it was dead so my fiance stuffed it in his dinner napkin and got a new setup. read more

I have been to The Harborside many times. I must say it is my favorite bar/restaurant in the area. The staff is great. The food is amazing. I feel Chef Brian is great at what he does and his food is delightful. The bartenders are always right on top of there game. When my drink is empty I don't even have to ask for another before there is one sitting in front of me. I do not agree with any of the bad reviews about this place. I have never gone there and felt like I was going to get punched in the face. It's not a "Jersey Thing" maybe its you.. Harborside keep up the great work. Would rate zero if possible. We sat down and were asked what we wanted to drink, we tried to order 2 different beers yet both were out. That is ridiculous from a place with a full bar. My parents ordered the rack of lamb special which was just mediocre. My brother ordered the shrimp with prosciutto pasta which was flavorless and missing the prosciutto. I ordered the penne with vodka sauce. It was salty and also missing the prosciutto that was supposed to be in it. Wandered in here after our initial destination was closed for a private party. Nice decor, waiter was polite, food was an abomination. Here's how it went: Crispy calamari salad: actually not bad. Little did I now it was the last thing I'd eat for the rest of my dinner French onion soup: microwaved and made with very stale bread Scallops on risotto: sent back as there was more sand than seasoning on the scallops. Real shame too as the dish was otherwise well prepared. Braised short ribs: hard to screw up short ribs, unless you serve it along side a big pile of rancid slop. At $28 their "chefs specialty dish" should have come with at least a vegetable. We asked that our bill be steeply discounted and skipped desert. It was cold and we were hungry, but this will be the last time I wander into a place without reading reviews first! Keep in mind this place is not cheap either! read more

An old man bar, don't expect much more. Sports are on the TV, the bartenders are generally nice and the food is decent given the general atmosphere of the place. My biggest gripe is with the fish tank. I want the tank to be good but it seems like they just do enough to keep the fish alive, really irks me. Thankfully they give you bread to soak it up. My husband had crab stuffed shrimp and it was yummy. I was busy eating the seared tuna and wasabi mashed with sautéed spinach. Huge portion! I've been here twice, and both experiences were really really different. I've only ever sat in the little bar area near the fire place, i like that atmosphere. My first time i had a lovely waitress and a great experience. We ordered risotto balls, crab cakes and a pizza. I enjoyed everything except the pizza (but I am not even judging, it was just a bar pie. I don't expect amazing pizza from them). The second time we had horrible service. We sat down and were ignored for almost a half hour (the servers literally looked at us and whispered to each other as if they were fighting over who would take our table , and blatantly ignored us). I'm not sure why we didn't just walk out... but finally someone came over and she was very sweet. Food wasn't good though. Wings were not good and we had some of the worst nachos I have honestly ever had. I wouldn't go back, as there are too many better options in the area. It's not the WORST thing ever though. We ate here on a Sunday, and aside from one large party of 14 that was just finishing their lunch, the place was basically empty. We waited long enough at the front desk that the bartender came to greet us. Food was average, but the service was terrible. The waitress should have been the busboy and the busboy the waitress since the busboy basically served us the entire meal. We had to ask repeatedly for plates bread and refills (waitressing 101, keep the glasses filled and ask how your meal is and if you need anything) not to mention that they forgot to bring the soup and my daughters meal showed up when the meal was practically over. This was not the first time we had a bad experience at Harborside, but being from the area we decided to give it another try. This place has the feeling of a place that has just given up. I took 2 friends to dinner here and we all raved about food. I thought the service was superb and the prices right. I had Veal Fracaise and the plate was full. We love this place!! My husband and I go at least once a month. Whether it be for lunch, dinner, or just appetizers and drinks. The service is excellent, it's a fun atmosphere with a friendly staff and we always feel welcome. I like that in the summer you can sit out on the patio or sit near the fireplace in the winter. I frequented this establishment with some buddies after checking out Carton Brewery in town. Some amongst us we hungrier than others, which in hindsight, made for a pretty entertaining experience. The food was quite good here, but actually getting it to arrive at the table was the overwhelmingly difficult part. We even threatened to leave at one point, after waiting for over 90 minutes in a less than half-filled dining room for our second course. We read through a series of lies, ultimately concluding that the waitress just forgot to put our order in. Our guess is she was thrown off by the manliness (7 past their prime, sweaty, hungry, slightly intoxicated, dudes telling off-color jokes, unhappy that we couldn't get the Yankee game on in favor of women's ncaa softball). At least she was very apologetic and took care of the bill at the end. Make no bones about it, I was prepared to launch off on an epic onslaught of harshness in my Yelp review- as I stared down at my empty plate, and up at the beefy ladies on the ESPN roping opposite field line drives. But the reality is, the food was worth all the bullcrap we encountered.. The slices in our 3 bar pies were effortlessly devoured within seconds. Flavorful, crispy, and delicious. The Cajun boneless wings were bold, meaty, and rewarding. Our group had a mix of juicy burgers, moist and flavorful chicken sandwiches,pasta with sausage dishes, and I think somebody even ordered a decent looking salad if my memory serves me correct. The beer menu was decent at best,but at least the bartender kept the drinks coming. At one point, I swear they resurrected a bottle from the ice-age and put it in front of me. It tasted ok, but I'm pretty sure I brought the plague back to my family that night. Overall, a memorable experience. I have been here multiple times, not that I want to but most of my friends are regulars go there because they know a couple of the bartenders. Not my choice of bar. Anyways, First time ever was in the summer and the service was very slow.. Mind I tell you they only have two bartenders during the summer so they took forever to get a drink and sometimes ignored you. The second and last time I would ever come back to this bar, As soon as i walk in I see this really big bartender screaming at one guy, not sure over what but kicking him out and making a scene over it. This bar really closes at 1:30AM, NOT 2AM!! They do last call at 1:30AM and stop serving completely, when most bars close at 2AM. I would figure by 1:45AM at least to do last call . ( Not like its a big bar to begin with anyways - I think they can handle last call at 1:45) So since it wasn't 2AM yet, it was like 1:40 I wanted one more beer before they close and it was still pretty full. ( like i said very small bar ) I guess the really big bartender, named CHARLIE (found out later on, that he was the same bartender screaming and kicking out the guy i mentioned previous) was having a bad night but from what My friends tell me, he is always like this. I asked CHARLIE for a beer, and said "Nope, Its 2o'clock" I looked at my phone & read 1:40 and I told him its wasn't 2o'clock and Its 1:40 so why can't i get a beer. He turned around real quick and started screaming on the top of his lungs so everyone at the bar can see that I'm getting yelled at and approaching me kicking me out & calling for security!! Just for asking a beer and telling him its not 2o'clock yet. I was very shocked cause first of all, I am 5'1 23 year old woman, and to be honest I do look very innocent and young. There was absolutely no reason to be treated that way! What blows my mind was that all the regulars are used to it and thought it was hilarious!! How are you going to have rude, lazy, and completely disrespectful employees work behind that bar. I used to work as a bartender at a couple of bars, from 4-Diamond resorts to night clubs, Never have we closed and stop serving before actual closing time, Never treated anyone like that ever. Even if its 5 minutes till closing time, We have to serve the customer the drink. what happened to the customer is always right? Not at this bar. From the moment we were seated, it was completely disgusting. Our table was sticky and looked like it was wiped with paper napkins that pieces were still stuck on the table. Then all 3 of our menus were filthy, greasy and tattered, didn't even want to touch them! My husband knew I was upset but we ordered our drinks anyway. I proceeded to unwrap my silverware roll and one of the forks hadn't even been washed!! Completely repulsive!! That was when the 3 of us had more than enough!! I looked around for the waitress to ask for our check but she wasn't appearing. I was on crutches from a recent surgery and it was my first night out. I hobbled towards the bar to look for her and she and 2 others were in the rear of the bar shoving food down their throats. Then I realized I had lemon in my iced tea that she probably used her fingers that she licked after eating!!! If this is what goes on in this establishment and it is as filthy as it is where the customers can see....I'm afraid to even imagine the FILTH IN THE KITCHEN!!? My friends and I often meet here for a glass of wine and it is always pleasant, friendly, and quick. I don't know what the person was doing who felt like they had to watch their back, but perhaps it was them, not the restaurant! The food here is usually very good, sometimes great and sometimes just ok. But, if you're from Atlantic Highlands like I am, this is the hometown place to go. Had the fish tacos, chicken cutlet sandwich, and french fries. Everything was cooked unbelievably well. Fish were soft and tender on the inside, while perfectly seared on the outside. Chicken cutlet was flavored with balsamic and pesto, and very ease to bite through, despite the lightly toasted ciabatta bun. Fries were perfectly crisped on the inside yet soft in the inside. First the positive - the food is delicious. Great meal every time I eat there. Negative- this has happened several times where customers are eating in the dining room and the support staff, waiters, hostess, manager and cooks, are eating and drinking and being loud. I personally do not want to see this. The manager was hanging out with them drinking a glass of wine with them. Some waiters and waitresses were drinks as well. There is a separate smoking section outside away from the outdoor dining. I do not smoke anymore so when we entered the front porch 2 men were smoking and 2 different customers told them you couldn't smoke on the porch. They ignored them. When I left an hour later they were still smoking with drinks in hand. I felt very unsafe. Maybe if the hostess and manager weren't hanging out they could have addressed this. It's such a shame the service is terrible because as I said the food is amazing. read more

Worst experience ever! Waitress was young and clueless, however, very sweet. Needless to say,not her fault, but managements. They should have her following an experienced server. Waited for our water, wine and beer, for at least 20 min. She didn't even know what beer they had on tap. We were starving. Ordered a salad, husband ordered nachos. Finally One hour later came with all food at once. My husbands dinner was completely wrong. We told them to take back the salad and nachos. . Can't eat everything at one time. Waitress apologized over and over again that there was some sort of computer problem in the kitchen, as did the person bringing out the food. No manager ever came out to apologize for the delay or check on us. To add to it all, there was a crazy loud table of kids and an Oblivious mother that never had the courtesy or decency to correct them. Seriously, look around you. Restaurant with adults in it. One star because I can't give it less... Never even got to eat here so can't comment on the food... (My boyfriend ate there a few years ago, and said the food was just meh, but we were willing to give it a try). Staff was so rude and obnoxious that my boyfriend and I ended up not even going inside. We pulled into the parking lot and parked in a marked spot. Note: there was a car parked literally in the middle of the lot where there are no spots, which made parking challenging even in the appropriate spot. We started walking toward the door and the building across the street caught our attention. We wanted to take a closer look, so we stood by the crosswalk. A young waitress came out and said that the lot was for Harborside patrons only. We said ok, and explained that we were coming inside to eat, and just wanted to take a quick look and would be right back. She repeated her statement and said it was a tow zone. We repeated that we were coming right back. We walked across the street, looked around, and turned back to the crosswalk. An older waitress from Harborside came out and yelled across the street at us that we weren't allowed to park there. All of this happened within the space of about 3 minutes. At this point, we were both beyond aggravated by the treatment of the staff. We walked back across. My boyfriend, who NEVER engages in any confrontation, walked up to the older waitress and explained what we were doing, and that due to their treatment of us, we had decided to not eat there. She suddenly appeared contrite and said it was just a misunderstanding and invited us in. We politely declined, to which she quickly responded, "Whatever." To say that the staff is unprofessional is an understatement. We will NEVER eat here, and will be sure to tell everyone we know to avoid this establishment. As an aside, after moving our car, we ended up eating at the restaurant across the street and were treated wonderfully by the staff and the food was good. That one is called Gaslight (craft beer place, and good food, super friendly staff and good atmosphere). Go to Gaslight instead if you're in Atlantic Highlands! read more

We have been long time patrons to the Harborside, but the last two experiences (hmm, same waitress... coincidence??) have been horrible. We went with our 2 kids, which by their very presence seemed to annoy the server. The kids food came out about 40 minutes after we ordered it, and only thanks to a helpful bus boy. The waitress was nowhere to be found. My husband's and my food never came out. When I took my 4 year old to use the restroom, we got in the way of our "waitress" who rolled her eyes and rudely pushed past us. When we asked for the bill, (again, thank you bus boy for being attentive to us.) the bill came with all 4 meals. Thankfully the manager waived the whole bill (the only right thing they did that day.) Because of our loooooong history with the Harborside, we may try again (I was so hoping to have my milestone birthday party there this year.) But I will HAVE TO ask for a different server... read more
