While visiting home from Vegas, I was on the hunt for a good karaoke spot and came across Hard Luck Bar & Grill. I'm so glad I did! The karaoke scene here is fantastic--just the right mix of people to make you feel comfortable singing your heart out. What really surprised me was finding a Coug bar on the west side! It was a pleasant surprise to see that right when I walked in, especially compared to the ugly purple and gold crap I normally see in the bars around Puyallup and Tacoma. Parking can be a bit of a challenge since it's located at a busy corner, but honestly, it's worth the effort. I had such a great time that I ended up going back twice in one week! The atmosphere is fun, and the people are friendly, making it a perfect spot to hang out and enjoy some good tunes. Well the bartenders are amazing! But the dj is not. We went here for karaoke night that was from 9-close. We got there at 9:45 and seen people signing up but the first person to sing didn't happen until 11pm. Me and my sister signed up and sang our first song then at midnight we signed up for another song, she added us to the list (dry erase board) and said "you guys will be up after my smoke break" okkkaayyy 1:00 am rolls around and she's drinking and talking/hanging out. I had to go up to her and ask when we were going to sing because we wanted to leave, she then said "you are up next. There is just one person in front of you. Does that sound good?" I told her yes because we just wanted to sing a one more time before leaving (we were ready to go around 12:45 ish) just waiting on her "smoke break" to end she was pretty faded, slurring her words and all. The man sang then we went up to get the mics she then said "oh you guys are after me, her and him" (people standing there that just signed up) I noticed she erased my name off her board and I asked her why? She proceeded to tell me I have to wait after she just told me we were next. me and my sister were frustrated at this point she then told me "you guys can leave " I then followed her to the manager where she was told to let us sing next and we sang our song then we left. we will definitely find somewhere else to do karaoke. let's not forget she told me "people pay for priority" and she was mia from her station almost the entire night read more

So I finally did...Kimmy, the bar tender, is kind, personable, very attentive ... and knows how to make a drink! The cook has his shit together. The drinks here are good. The crowd is sketchy. The bartender's service was ridiculously slow and ahe was rude. It took over half an hour to get a second drink and it was the middle of the day and slow. They offer a large variety of pull tabs if that's your thing. Pool tables and a jukebox are a nice addition. I honestly, probably wouldn't go back because it seems more like a nightclub than a bar and the service was just not up to par. I forgot to mention, the nachos are freaking delicious! Sorry but if they can't even watch a local yelp and get it, they are not going to last like some have. ----------------------------- That said... This is POTENTIALLY the best karaoke in all of Tacoma/Puyallup Good music system - but it was played too loudly especially for the space given - the singers couldn't hear themselves to keep on key - and that's the same for professionals; if you can't hear yourself even the best of singers WILL go off key and add a bit of beer... yeah, turn the music down a bit, and get the monitor, if there is one,* in front of these singers* so they can have the BEST chance of putting their best foot forward. There are no books so you will need to bring your DATA device connected to the net - interesting but I don't have a data phone or other wireless device. I think it's GREAT not to have sticky and outdated (!) Karaoke listings. I asked why the bar was not in the Karaoke category since they started this back in February - I was told that the owner "does that" but that it would be passed on - geeze, *I hope so*, they either WANT more business or they are satisfied with a great bar, decent prices and few people on a weeknight - they can do MUCH better :) The DOWNSIDE for me was customers who kept keeping the door to the patio open so that the smoke POURED in - tobacco isn't good for a bar - many more people don't smoke but they don't come to "bars" to Karaoke for this one reason, the doors are not kept shut and the smoke isn't kept to a minimum. I understand that people want to hear their friends or participate in the music but please do it after you are finished with your cigarettes and PLEASE blow it OUTSIDE instead of blowing that last puff into the bar - not good for ANYONE. I hope this place stays and that they start having contests for Karaoke, they already participate in DARTS tournaments - and it's a nice setup with their trophies adorning the spaces inbetween showing that they really are passionate about DARTS. Last but certainly not least, my suggestion EVERY SINGLE "SPORTS" BAR OR KARAOKE JOINT OUT THERE: Take the TIME to set your TVs to CLOSED CAPTIONING - it's frustrating trying to figure out what is going on on ESPN or ANY channel when the words aren't there to at the very least READ. As I have said before I am not really going into hitting any of the bars in the area unless they are ones in Seattle. Steve and I have been to the Hard Luck twice now mainly because we have friends that like to go here because of the karaoke. The first time we were here we actually got something to eat here and in all actuality it was not that bad. We got a massive plate of nachos which had to be shared by pretty much everyone in our party(we were there for a birthday party). One of the best aspects about coming here is that they have good deals for pitchers of Mac and Jacks and Steve and I both enjoy that beer very much! This is kind of a sports bar and kind of caters to the "lighter" Harley crowd so there are a few people that come in that are kind of rough but as I always say, safety in numbers. All in all if you come here just to hang with friends and have some drinks then this bar is ok but the place lacks atmosphere and character compared to the bars that you go into on Capitol Hill in Seattle. read more

A huge improvement over the old Tipperary that use to be there. Gone is the smell of years of cigarettes, stale spilt beer and mold. Servers are friendly and accomodating. The burger is excellent. Flavorful and perfectly cooked. No fryer, though. That means no greasy food that goes great with beer. Malibu chicken salad was enormous but the dressing was way too sweet. The two of us couldn't finish half the nachos but bigger is not always better. Quantity over quality there. Some parts of the menu are hard to read in the dimly lit tavern. This place was recommend by HI family so we went there with our WA family. Good place to chill. Good food. Love their Naked wings with buffalo sauce. Nachos was the bomb! They have a pool & darts....when 9pm rolled around Karaoke was ON! The man who ran the karaoke machine was great. Had a good feeling. Met a lot of friendly people. Went to this place for my birthday. I wanted to do Karoke and I was completely satisfied on that. Only thing I would change is the table my husband reserved for 10 was actually what we got. Instead we were give two tables right up front, so we took them and pushed them together. It did upset some other people but if they would have done what they said when it was planned they wouldn't have been, again this is my only complaint. The food portions were huge, we got nachos, which everyone could eat off of. My husband did order the clams but said it wasn't very filling for $12. The DJ was super cool.
