When we lived nearby, it was so nice to be able to walk over to the market on weekends for BBQ or sometimes just to grab a sandwich. Those visits always felt like part of the neighborhood routine. Hands down the BEST butcher shop in the valley! I was tired of buying overpriced and poor quality meat at Ralph's and other big chain grocery stores. I wanted to start supporting small business and I remembered that my father used to go to Hardy's growing up (he always bought their italian sausages), so I looked it up and I was so happy to see it's still in business! I decided to go there to buy my meat for an upcoming dinner party. I stopped in to get 4 pounds of chuck roast....and all I can say is WOW! One of the best cuts of meat i've ever eaten! Romeo was at the counter and I watched him cut the piece of meat himself. He's truly a legend and takes pride in what he does and it's evident in every detail of the shop. The entire store and meat counter are super clean. The facade it hasn't really changed since the day it opened. It has a funky vintage feel that feels special in today's cookie cutter world. I even got a little teary eyed walking out of the place, thinking about how my father used to get great quality meat for our family here and now I am able to do the same. Update : That tomahawk steak was RIDICULOUS. It was sooo tender. So juicy. Whatever seasoning he used was so good. The fat was delicious . Absolutely mouth watering. We demolished it. It was gone in minutes. I will DEFINITELY be returning to buy all my tomahawk steaks from here . (Also the tomahawk isn't on display , you have to request it) It was Father's day we knew we wanted to buy our dad a tomahawk steak. We were planning to go to whole foods but we saw this place and decided to walk inside. We were greeted by the owner. He said the tomahawk was $18 a pound and it was 3 lbs. He cut it into 3rds for us (because it was crazy thick). He then seasoned it for us. He was so proud of his secret recipe for the spicy sausages he gave us a few samples. He said that you can't find that sausage anywhere but there because it's his very own recipe he made himself. He also stressed the point that his sausage is comprised of the finest quality meat, no nonsense no fillers. He shared with us that he has been the proud owner of that deli for 35 years. Funny little market on the corner of Moorpark and Coldwater. I came in wanting to try their BBQ Baby Back Ribs and was NOT disappointed. Friendly service and I was the only customer there on a weekday at 4:45pm. So nice! I got about 6 ribs and a sample of the Tri Tip and was not disappointed. I was a little skeptical about the BBQ sauce, not usually a fan of it but I tried Hardy's BBQ Sauce and i was amazed! Just a little bit oh heat and tangy-ness. It's sad this place has really gone downhill. The food is gross now and it lacks any kind of love. The chicken is dry and flavorless and they try and push the preheated meat, instead of fresh from the barbecue. They think they're slick. I used to like going here. The service was usually pretty good and the quality of the meat was good. Decent sandwiches, decent BBQ. No more. I placed an order for pickup and was given a quote of $13.98 per pound. Two days later, when I went to pick it up, the price had almost tripled. When asked what was going on, the person behind the counter said that's what the price was and that's what the price he told me was (it was the same guy). Except for the fact that the price had been scribbled out and changed on their receipt... I was never told anything but the $13.98 price. My receipt (photo attached!) shows $13.98 per pound. To have the balls to lie to my face and try to make me look like an asshole when YOU CLEARLY MESSED UP is no way to run a business. Did you find out the price was wrong? Guess what? My number is on the receipt. You could have called and told me about your screw up. Hell, you could even have APOLOGIZED WHEN I CAME TO PICK IT UP AND OWNED UP TO THE MISTAKE. I walked in during lunch time on a week day, I asked for the pull pork and some tri tip and mind you it was 12:45 PM (lunch time). He stated he had neither so he gave me roast beef and turkey, both sliced by a machine served cold on a plate to go. I asked him I was here as LA Mag promoted him but I purchased the food and left. Almost $30.00 for cold cut sandwich meat with some sauce that tasted nothing like BBQ. The owner of Hardy's Meat Market is VERY rude. He's short tempered, speaks AT you if he speaks to you at all. He ALWAYS has a BAD attitude. However, yesterday's experience was the worst. I'll never go back. I ordered a turkey for Thanksgiving. I was never told the price. When I got to the market, the staff was nice. The owner never acknowledged me. His hospitality and service is extremely bad. It's been bad, however, now it's worse. I spoke to him by name. "Romeo". His staff acknowledged that I was trying to speak to him and I clearly heard him say he was busy. It took more energy to be an "a-hole" than to just say "Hello". I know he owes me nothing more than what I purchased, which was $160 for a turkey and 3 pieces of chicken. To be so rude, that's just BAD customer service. I know people love this place and so did I. I'm not here to talk about the high prices. They're not posting prices and giving you prices making it seem as though you're getting a deal. Service and the people here are amazing and love the staff here. However, being a former New Yorker and having a love for bodega sandwiches these that are made here are way over priced. For something that shouldn't cost more than $5-$8 I was charged $13 for a simple turkey, cheese, mustard, tomato sandwich(they actually forgot the cheese). Great customer service. Met Romeo himself. Great story, lots of hard work, and dedication to his craft and the community. He gave me a lot of his bbq meats for only $25, and I bought $25 worth of beef bones for bone broth. Service is top notch; the team was efficient, friendly, polite. They even offered to help me carry the two big bags of loot to my car! They were bulky but not unmanageable. How considerate is that? I purchased a big bag of marrow bone ($3.49/lb; local Ralph's sells it at 3.99$/lb but frequently out of stock) and frozen chicken blocks (broth + meat); 1.79$/lb). Another plus of this store is that everything is well labeled in terms of price, so it doesn't leave you in a dark hole when you're making choices. Romeo is a Valley Legend. I look forward to weekends when the smell of perfectly smoked meat permeates the air of Studio City. The beef ribs are the thing to get here, but Romeo - who has been at this location for 24 years, and smoking meat for 37 - will let you know what the best cuts are for the day. He has a good team, and they're helpful and prompt. Sometimes there's a line; sometimes there's not. The one thing you must factor in is that you're paying for Hardy's ONLY, eg don't try to grab a beer, some veggies, and pay for it all at the front - Hardy's/Romeo has a separate register inside. For whatever reason Ralphs meat department went down years ago -- all Ralphs markets and Vons as well. Always blood in the packaging indicating old meats and far too many times I had to return the meat because it was brown and old on the other side once I got it home. I went to Hardys Meats and the quality of meat is terrific. True, it's more expensive but it's worth enjoying a great steak. The ground beef and ground turkey is freshly ground. Whenever I make hamburgers for a bbq everyone wants to know what I seasoned it with - nothing is my reply, it's fresh and makes all the difference. I wish I could give this place 6 stars, because this place really does dial it up to 11. Hardys best BBQ is an add on to Hardys Meat Market. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons they roll out a massive grill and cook up the best BBQ Beef ribs in Los Angeles that I've had. And I've had plenty. Baby Blues, Phillips, Bludso's, Lucille's, all pale in comparison. I came early on a Sunday afternoon to try the ribs as I had seen the smoker outside for almost a year. When we got there they didn't have anything cooked fresh from that day, as we were early. (Fresh food is ready at 2PM) But they did have some leftovers from the day before which when I had a bite I nearly cried. And this had sat under a heat lamp for almost a day. I was so impressed I came back again that night to try some fresh ribs, and thank God I did, because my life has forever been changed for the better. While waiting in line two other people standing next to me expressed the same sentiment. Frankly, I'm was a little unsure I wanted to actually write this review, because I don't want my new favorite place to become hip or trendy, but at the same time I want the world to know how amazing these guys are. Romeo, has been cooking here since 1985 and he is a true master of meats. If this BBQ was sold in a Hollywood restaurant you could charge three times as much for it and people would still consider it an amazing deal. Simply stated...Romeo is the best in town!! Their sausages are made in-house and they're fantastic. I've served them at parties and had a room full of guests come up to me one by one to ask where I got them. All their tender, flavorful beef is sourced from one farm in Colorado. And seriously, the most succulent, fork-tender filet you could ever make. Their pork ribs and Boston Butt Roast are amazing. We just smoked three Boston Butts last weekend, and they were perfect!! Quick note: Romeo is not cheap, but his prices are fair. The filet rivals Whole Foods in cost, but blows the doors off WF for quality and flavor (YES...exceeds WF quality by a large margin!!). Plus, Romeo and his family (yes, family run business) are so kind, friendly, and accommodating...customer service and a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere are key here!! So you get the best quality meats and the best experience from one of LA's last, old fashioned neighborhood family butchers!!
