Before making a road trip to Michigan, I took my car in here to have it checked. My brakes were squeaking, engine made a clicking sound at low speeds, and it was very slow to turn over and start. Walking in, I was greeted by a very friendly man named Jim. I told him the issues and let him know I was driving to Michigan. They checked it out for free. In about 20 minutes, they diagnosed the problem as a bad battery and cracks in my drive belt. Both were legit issues. I knew the battery was getting old. The drive belts were also previously diagnosed as cracked but I held off on the replacement because of that other repair shop's cost. At Hair Repair though, cost was not an issue. Jim gave me a line item estimate of $160 parts and $100 labor. $260 total! The other repair shop wanted more than that just for the belts. I waited about two hours for them to make a run to get the parts and complete the replacements. They also gave me special wiper fluid that wouldn't freeze up in Michigan. I paid via debit card and wished Jim a Happy Thanksgiving. Now, my car is running like new! Great and honest service. Excellent prices. I wish I would of found this place sooner. read more

This is the car repair shop that you wish all repair shops would be like. My exact experience is not that important other than to testify that I was not upsold, given fake repairs/estimates, and then...to my shock...they actually did all the work they were supposed to at the price they quoted. To top it off, they have free wifi, so when I came in as a walk-up with no appointment, they got right to work on fixing my brakes while I got my work done in their lounge. The service took 2 hours which is exactly what they said it would, and I heard several calls going on from the lobby where they told customers that they had found only minor problems with their cars and were going to do the quick repair at the cost of parts! I am going to get some things done with my 2003 Impala that I was holding back on because I couldn't find an ethical mechanic in all of Houston. read more

I've been here twice now, and both times I would rate with 5-stars. Whenever I move to a new area, I totally stress out trying to find someone that can work on my cars that I can trust; that won't rip me off; that won't stack-up mysterious charges at the last second... How do you find an honest, reliable, and AFFORDABLE repair team? I checked here on Yelp, saw the reviews, and thought... Let's give 'em a try. So glad I did! On my first trip, I needed my brakes replaced, pads, adjustments, tweaks, etc... basically, I needed the car to stop without squeaks and howls of protest. I called and talked to Jim Hare. He gave me a few quick ballpark numbers based on my situation, but I needed to bring it in. I'd done some comparison pricing, and of all the reputable shops (i.e., *not* Brake Check, or Brake Stop), they were all sort of coming in around $230 or so for this particular car. When I arrived in the shop, I found a team of surly veteran professionals with a quick sense of humor. I swear, I think these guys could fix anything. Jim gets you in and to the details right away, asks the right questions, doesn't make you feel like you're idiot like so many places... (ahem, Firestone!!!) So I'm in there, and Jim tells me, "I'm pretty sure it'll be about $230, but let's take a look to be sure.' About 30 minutes in, he comes and tells me... yep, I was right, shall we get started? I really only thought I was getting it looked at, but I was ready so told him "let's do it!" and about 45 minutes later it was ready. I also expected it to take a couple hours! I'm soooo conditioned to going to pay for work at an auto facility and getting "surprises" at the last second.... guess what. NO SURPRISES. It was $229 and change... AWESOME So while I'm in the store, before leaving, I tell Jim, "hey, you know, I'm having problems with my Air Conditioner as well" - I tell him about what happened.... it just stopped. I took it to Goodyear up in The Woodlands for a quick diagnostic. I told him how the Goodyear guys told me it would be $1,200 to repair it and that the parts they needed to order could only come from Ford (two at $400 each, plus hoses, coolant, evac and recharge, four hours of labor, fees, taxes, etc...) and that there's no way I could afford that, Mr. Goodyear guy, so I had to wait until I could. I'd actually FOUND one of the parts on Amazon for about $100 and wanted to see if Hare Repair could install it for me, order any other parts, etc... and how much would it cost? Jim says "hang on a sec", pulls out the phone and calls one of his suppliers "hey, how much for a condenser? uh huh... does that need a dryer? uh huh.. okay, yes, a 2010 Ford Escape, uh huh... 6-cyl, okay... bye" he scribbles some numbers and says... I'll do it for $290 HOLY CRAP - $290, and not $1,200? Okay, I realize he had one less part to order, since I got one from Amazon, but that's a huge difference! Still, I didn't have $290, so I waited a little longer... Finally this week I had had enough! I called Jim and asked when I could come in. I'M READY... he said to bring it in on my way to work and they'll get it done for me before it's time to go home. Awesome. So that's exactly what I did. I brought it in and got right off to work (had a coworker give me a lift to the office) Just before 3:00 o'clock, I got a call on my phone from Jim. He said "ok, I don't know how to say this... but first, you said the condenser wasn't holding any fluid, right?" I started thinking, okay, here it comes... the other shoe. damn, this always happens! Nope, no other shoe. Turns out the condenser was fine! As in ... no need to replace?! What? Jim says, "well, I don't know how to do business any other way - I can't replace something that isn't broken! we put a charge in it, put a dye in it, evacuated the whole system, left it with the vacuum for 30 minutes, and it kept the vacuum with no loss at all... come and get it when you like." What?! Really? Okay. I get down to Hare Repair and they literally only charged me $129 for evac and recharge plus fluids... That's a fair shot less than $290! and absolutely not $1,200!!! I will NEVER take my car to Goodyear (or Firestone) ever again! Hare Repair has a new customer for life! read more

Executive Summary: These guys care about what they're doing. Jim can consider standup comedy if the mechanic business doesn't work out. The battery on my Infiniti FX35 died so I picked up a new one at Sears. Unfortunately the car still wouldn't start. I figured it was a starter issue so I had it towed to Hare after reading the excellent reviews on here. Jim called me back and said the issue was that the new battery was defective. I had him take a look at the brakes and he said I had another 10k miles to go on them. Other places might not have been so helpful. Jim will get all my business from now on! read more

We love these guys! They do great work, give honest estimates, and have fair prices. There's never any surprises at check out - if a repair is more complicated than they anticipated, they call before doing anything extra. If they can't fix it right, they'll refer you to someone who can who has the same level of integrity and honesty. My family's been taking our cars to Hare Repair since the 80's and we keep coming back. When I moved back to Houston in 2009 and started taking my car to them, they remembered me even though I'd not seen them in well over 10 years. My husband just bought a used car that's been serviced it's entire off-warranty life at Hare Repair. Went to this shop today based on the Yelp reviews. The owner, Jim, is as several described, nice and funny. He is extremely knowledgeable in cars and seems trustworthy. I came here for help in possibly looking for a EGI harness for a cheaper price or the plastic connector. Turns out that my service engine light came on because ignition coil #2 had a misfire (bad). I thought it was because coil #1 had a missing connector (it has silicone glue between the coil and harness to keep it intact). I decided not to have the coil replaced by his shop because the whole ignition coil dilemma has been worked on by a nearby mechanic and the 1-year warranty might still be current. Since some labor work had been done, he agreed he was going to charge me but he actually did not. I was shocked. Kind man! I will surely return here in the future for other car concerns/repairs. I sure wish I knew of him when I first moved into the city. It has been hard for me to find a mechanic that's reasonable, respectful, doesn't take advantage, and explains stuff in Houston. Also, the staff are friendly and they offer free WIFI. read more

I decided to give this place a ring thanks to the Yelp reviews and I'm glad I did. I knew what I was going in for already (replacing a bushing on the driver's side lower control arm) and Jim was able to give me an estimate over the phone that sounded reasonable so I settled on them. When I dropped it off I told them that I was a bit worried I had let it go for too long and that it might have caused some damage to the arm itself, but after they had a chance to look at it, they said the arm was fine. That's right - I presented an easy opportunity to overcharge me and they passed it up. They did present some bad news, however, and mentioned that the passenger side's control arm bushing was also coming loose. I braced for a new estimate at roughly double the cost, but the labor charge went up by only about 35% despite the fact that the work that goes into replacing one does not help much at all towards replacing the other. The parts cost ($22/bushing) did, of course, double. I'm not sure if the initial phone estimate was just a little high so I wouldn't get sticker shock after I brought it in or what, but I was pleasantly surprised - especially since I thought the original estimate was perfectly fine. Other things to note: They were able to fix it up the same day after I brought it in around lunch time. All the folks I met (Eric, Tom, Jim, and another gentleman whose name I don't recall - sorry!) were kind and jovial. Just an all around great and hassle-free experience. This was my first time at Hare Repair, and I can assure you I will be back again. The first thing I liked about this place was how they actually answered the phone and talked to me when I called a week prior, unlike other places who claimed to call back but never did. I also appreciated how they give you a price upfront of each part plus the labor. The breakdown of price and why each part was needed was refreshing. I arrived at 7:30am and didn't get my car back until 11:30am. Instead of waiting, I walked a short 10 minutes to Starbucks to get some work done. The people at Hare repair didn't have my vehicle ready when I returned and they apologized profusely and said they would start work on the vehicle immediately. They apologized about this every 15 minutes, but I wasn't bothered by the wait as I got some good work done! I told them not to worry! They kept apologizing as I was walking out the door! Hare Repair has great people who do quality work and will be honest with what your vehicle actually needs and what it doesn't. I'll definitely return. read more

I found these guys a few years ago on Citysearch after a lengthy & highly unsatisfactory experience with the DEALERSHIP where I bought my VW Beetle. Due to the horrific service I received from the dealership, I will never again in my life own a Volkswagen, nor will I recommend them to anyone. However, thanks to Hare Repair I have a trusted mechanic for life. Everything that you've read on here is absolutely true. These guys are amazing. They embody what an auto shop SHOULD be in an ideal world. They are honest, caring, highly skilled, and knowledgeable. If they can't fix something, they will let you know AND tell you where to go to get it fixed. If a repair can wait, they will let you know. If it's time to abandon your clunker and buy a new car, even though that means they temporarily lose your business, they will let you know! For a single woman, a repair shop whose owners truly care about doing the best job possible as well as saving their customers money is an invaluable asset to have. This is the first review I am writing and I found it necessary to write one for this auto repair shop; thus, I have created an account for this very purpose. I went in to get my alternator checked as I had recently experienced a loss of electric power. After arriving earlier than my expected time I was greeted by the receptionist, Angela, and though it was their lunch time she was able to get me in and find a mechanic that was able to take a look at my jeep. I am very pleased with the fast, courteous, and efficient assistance the staff provided me. Bobby was my mechanic and after taking a look at my jeep he let me know there was nothing wrong with it! Now I was so very pleased with their prompt service that I asked him to do an oil change so I could at least pay them something for taking a look at my jeep. Thank you so much Bobby and Angela, and my apologies for keeping you during your lunch time. I will return to this very auto repair shop during the years I spend here in Houston!!! We saw the ratings on Yelp and decided to bring our GMC Yukon XL to Hare Repair for new brakes because NTB on 2611 South Loop West said we needed new breaks. We are from out-of-town and had just needed our new tires rotated but NTB gave us an estimate of more than $1,600 for brakes and we thought we really needed a second opinion. We spoke to Angela and got a convenient appointment scheduled. Jim had the GMC up on the rack right away. I was just getting ready to take a taxi back to the hotel when Angela asked that I wait for Jim. After 20 minutes, Jim came back and told me that my front brakes were perfect and the back brakes had at least another 10,000 miles on them. When we are in Houston and when I need any car repair performed, I will definitely come back to Hare Repair where I know I will get an honest assessment from the crew there. read more

So easy to schedule appt and get an idea of costs up front. These guys are fun and pro-active! Easy drop off and pick up of my car. I dealt with both Eric and Jim, and both guys were sweet and genuine. I called them about brakes for my car, and they saved me a bunch of moolah. I thought I'd need new breaks up front, and they were honest in telling me that I needed a few minor things and still have 7-10 months of life in them. I also had them do a 90K mile service on the car and it was relatively painless for my wallet. Most importantly, though, the whole experience led me to believe that this is a company full of honest guys who are relaxed, knowledgable, and efficient. I rely on Yelp so much, and yet, this is my first time writing a review only because Hare Repair provided such great service! After getting gipped by Sal's Westheimer Auto Repair, I resorted to Yelp and called Hare Repair at 3:20 pm to ask if they could do an oil change. The guy who answered told me that they would be closing soon, but that they would take me in. As soon as I got there, they were ready to take my car, I was able to use their free wifi to get some work done, and I was out of there in 20 minutes. 20 MINUTES! I'm so used to waiting over an hour for an oil change. Given, this was the most expensive I've ever paid for an oil change (~$40), but for the last minute request, prompt service, and genuinely nice and funny employees, I would definitely go there again. read more

However, after speaking with Jim from Hare Repair, I knew I had to give credit and recognition for his honesty and guidance. After explaining my vehicles' problems and my best efforts to troubleshoot them, Jim gave me an honesty answer that saved me hundreds of dollars on repairs. I have been coming to Hare Repair the last two years I've been in Houston after being recommended to them by a friend. I absolutely love them. I will be moving soon , and I will miss them tremendously. It will be hard to find someone who is as honest, cheap, and quick to get the job done as them. Over the last two years I have had my radiator replaced, lights replaced, oil changes, and several other minor things done to my car here. They always recommended cheaper ways of fixing the car. When my light was going to be very expensive to fix if they ordered the part for me, they recommend that I order the part for cheaper and they could put it in for me. They gave me the part number, and I found the best deal! Also, recently I took my car in and told them about my passenger side window being off it's track. Instead of ordering a new part, they found a way to bend it back to be functional and didn't make me pay. They really care about their customers and our wallets. I highly recommend them! read more

Best experience with an auto repair vendor, period. I took my 2014 Jeep Wrangler in for repair in early February 2019 and received the most courteous customer service and fair treatment I have ever received when it comes to auto repair. They are the only repair shop I know that calls you before you have to call them to get a status on your vehicle. Try owning close to a dozen cars in your lifetime to realize the rarity of this behavior. Last but not least, let me discuss cost. I originally took my vehicle to another vendor and not only was charged $75 to have the estimate performed, but was also quoted almost 50% more than what Hare Repair charged me to perform the exact same work. There are few things I hate in life as much as dealing with car trouble.....but these guys made it tolerable to say the least. Some of the most friendly and honest people I have ever encountered when dealing with auto repairs! Jim is the real deal when it comes to customer service. My favorite part? Since they were fixing a minor issue, I asked them to look around and see if there were any other problems/issues they could find. Afterwards, they only fixed what I asked for, but didn't try to make the "hard sale" of convincing me my life was in jeopardy if I didn't spend an additional $10K+ to fix a bunch of made up nonsense. They pointed out a few areas of concern but simply said that, if I was interested, come back for my next oil change and they would do a more thorough inspection and have a separate conversation; they didn't feel comfortable telling me to fix stuff without having a knowledge of the car's (or mine) history. read more

I think most women are paranoid about getting scammed by mechanics and it's especially nerve wracking when you're not from here, but I had a great experience with this company. I submitted my request via Yelp (on a Saturday evening) and I had a response from Rhonda first thing Monday morning. I didn't think I'd be able to get an estimate over the phone but I DID! And what I thought was the problem (because I think I know everything) turned out to be something far less expensive. I appreciated their honesty and quick turnaround. I had interactions with at least 3 people there and they were are very friendly. Not that I'm anticipating anything happening to my car but if I do, I know where I'll be taking it. These people are the BIZZ-NESS! Being a woman, going to a mechanic is nerve wracking when you know nothing about cars. I've brought my car here 3 times for brake work, a transmission issue and routine car maintenance and felt comfortable every single time. Rhonda in the front is easy to talk to and she communicates with you about your car throughout the day. Jim the owner is knowledgeable and will explain to you what is wrong in a way you understand without making you feel stupid. Prices are reasonable and they definitely don't try to price gouge you for not knowing better. I had all 4 brakes and rotors replaced for half the price than 3 national chains I called that same day. Was looking for a good reliable place to take my 2016 Lexus IS350 to for a brake job. I was referred here by a friend. Called them up and said they could get me in the same day. Came right in and things started to get super busy for them. ( that's a good sign right off the back ) they recommended I come back the next day since they were even down a mechanic. I wasn't too worried about it and was willing to come back but once they asked more about if i lived in the area ( which I do not, I came from about an hour away) and they found out I lived that far they said oh heck no! Do not come here if you own a VW. I came in because my engine light and EPC light came on and before I told him anything I first told him what kind of car I had and he immediately said " I haven't worked on a VW in about 4 years. I don't like them. So sorry but I can't help you." Didn't even listen to what my problem was or offer to even try and take a look at it. Just an automatic no. Yet there are other VW reviews on here? So either he checked out for the day and didn't feel like helping me, or he really doesn't know squat about VW. Reviews are right though. He definitely likes to joke around. Told me to go drive my car off a cliff because that's how much he hates VWs. Was hopeful after reading all the great reviews and ended up very disappointed. read more

Best auto repair shop in City of Houston that I'm aware of. Have been taking my old car here for almost a decade and they have kept it running smoothly. They are smart, efficient, fair priced and easy to work with. My experiences at Hare repair makes me seriously question the negative reviewers on this site - I'm suspicious that the negative reviewers are/were the problem when it came to doing business with this shop! The naysayers sound to me like they are the ones that don't know about cars - makes me think they have unrealistic expectations for a mechanic to make their car brand new, that they have no idea what other auto repair shops are like in the area, that they are overly demanding snobs and/or are looking to find something wrong. No one and no place of business is 100% perfect but Hare Repair does their absolute best in striving to be. They do not take advantage of their customers like most places do which is why they have so many loyal customers and high ratings. Highly recommend! read more

Hate to be the first negative review, but... I drive a Lexus IS 250. Head light turns off on its own, and the wheels make this very low clanking noise. Called Hare repair and was told no problem bring it in, and I can get free ride back to work while they work on the car. When I got to the place at 7am, Jim was already very stressed about the day (didn't get to see his fun side at all). I was not successful in getting any type of assessment or cost indication on the spot. The help that drove me back to work was a very very sweet old man, I really enjoyed talking to him. But then I got a call from Jim at 3PM, said a) light is actually a complicated issue that cost 1000 bux and only the dealer can work it out, b) they can't really tell what the wheel clanking is about, recommend get the dealer to work on it, and c) they need to charge me 55 bux for this assessment. oh and they can't give me a ride back now. 15 minutes later, Jim called me again and said if i could leave now from work he could get me a ride. I got there, talked to him, and told him paying 55 bux for a half hearted assessment with no results is a very unsatisfying way of spending money. Can I at least get a discount for service next time? He said no. THIS is where our conversation got interesting. He said a) the mechanics already spent over an hour doing this assessment (what did the mechanic do for over an hour, I ask you? try out a light bulb, then listen to the wheel clanking without providing a solution?), and b) "free" pick ups are not really free if I know what he means, that it's actually an hour of the help's time (my office is no more than 10 mins away from Hare repair). This may be a good shop for very apparent issues and owners that are clueless about cars. But if you have a semi nice car and issues that require a bit of analytical thinking, then you might end up paying hourly labor just for someone to tell you to take the car to the dealer. I've been putting this off for a long time. To the proprietors of Hare Repair- If you read this, I'm sorry it took me so long to tell everyone how wonderful you are, but, if the other reviews are any indication, I'm not the only one who thinks so. First, some necessary backstory: My car was built in 95, a hand-me-down. It's old, and I'm going try and drive it until it dies. Last summer, the AC went out, and the belt that ran both it and the power steering eventually snapped due to complications from the dead AC unit. While trying to diagnose the problem myself, I backed up next to a pole and bent my driver's-side car door backwards. It shut, but not very well. Go me. I lived with the no power steering, AC, and broken door, but when it came time for an oil change, I took my car to Hare Repair on the advice of a former roommate. I asked Hare Repair for an oil change, and to just look and see if there was anything that could be done for my poor power steering. I said I didn't want to pay a whole lot (the ac fix estimate was 400 from another shop) but if something could be done cheaply, I'd love to look into the option. I was told "no promises" by jim, but that he'd look into it. We went out my car, and I handed him my keys. "The door's broken," I said "Don't worry, It's a feature." Jim just laughed at me. He called half of houston and found a converter kit for my model car that bypassed the AC unit for the belt, and as he yelled "ARE YOU FEELING LUCKY, PUNK?" across the shop at me, I laughed and knew I'd found my mechanic. I walked out with a $90 bill for everything. "But chris," you say, "any mechanic could've installed a converter kit." You're right. That's not what earned these guys five stars. As I was paying for the work, Jim asked if I was a AAA member. When I said "no," he gave me a card with a towing company's name, and told me that, if my car would break down, that this towing company would charge the tow to Hare Repair if I'd bring my car to them. Of course, I told them that I had found my Houston mechanics, and I would be bringing this, and all subsequent cars back to them for service. I thanked them for the free towing and walked out to my car. As I opened my door, I noticed that it opened and shut fluidly. MY DOOR WAS FIXED. I stood in shock. I turned around and looked through the windows and Jim and his partner were standing at the counter, laughing hysterically. THEY HAD FIXED MY DOOR FOR FREE AND THEN SURPRISED ME WITH IT. Let me repeat that. THEY FIXED MY DOOR. FOR FREE. AND THEN SURPRISED ME WITH THE REPAIR. How many times has an auto mechanic done that for you, ON YOUR FIRST VISIT? These guys are phenomenal.
