Hate to be the first negative review, but... I drive a Lexus IS 250. Head light turns off on its own, and the wheels make this very low clanking noise. Called Hare repair and was told no problem bring it in, and I can get free ride back to work while they work on the car. When I got to the place at 7am, Jim was already very stressed about the day (didn't get to see his fun side at all). I was not successful in getting any type of assessment or cost indication on the spot. The help that drove me back to work was a very very sweet old man, I really enjoyed talking to him. But then I got a call from Jim at 3PM, said a) light is actually a complicated issue that cost 1000 bux and only the dealer can work it out, b) they can't really tell what the wheel clanking is about, recommend get the dealer to work on it, and c) they need to charge me 55 bux for this assessment. oh and they can't give me a ride back now. 15 minutes later, Jim called me again and said if i could leave now from work he could get me a ride. I got there, talked to him, and told him paying 55 bux for a half hearted assessment with no results is a very unsatisfying way of spending money. Can I at least get a discount for service next time? He said no. THIS is where our conversation got interesting. He said a) the mechanics already spent over an hour doing this assessment (what did the mechanic do for over an hour, I ask you? try out a light bulb, then listen to the wheel clanking without providing a solution?), and b) "free" pick ups are not really free if I know what he means, that it's actually an hour of the help's time (my office is no more than 10 mins away from Hare repair). This may be a good shop for very apparent issues and owners that are clueless about cars. But if you have a semi nice car and issues that require a bit of analytical thinking, then you might end up paying hourly labor just for someone to tell you to take the car to the dealer. Found this place to replace my alternator and the service was excellent Rhonda was very nice and kept me up to date on everything..the business itself appeared well kept up and had a nice kids room. I'm giving this place 5 Stars for multiple reasons. I was having issues with my car and got an estimate from several Mecanic shops, I was trying to get a reasonable price to do brake and suspension repair that my car badly needed. Each shop gave me very HIGH estimates and even tried getting me to get MORE work done to the vehicle that it didn't even need. I saw this place had high reviews and thought I'd give it a try. Needless to say, I was very happy with the outcome. First thing that should be noted is this company is very HONEST and won't try to hassle u out of more money that isn't necessary to spend. Second they genuinely care about your safety and want to get your car on the road running like it should be. Third, they go over the areas that need to be taken care of, discuss a reasonable price (Note: beating all competitors by half the price) and once you agree, they get started on your vehicle. Last but not lease, the work they do is great, they had my car running like I just bought it from a dealer. I've been putting this off for a long time. To the proprietors of Hare Repair- If you read this, I'm sorry it took me so long to tell everyone how wonderful you are, but, if the other reviews are any indication, I'm not the only one who thinks so. First, some necessary backstory: My car was built in 95, a hand-me-down. It's old, and I'm going try and drive it until it dies. Last summer, the AC went out, and the belt that ran both it and the power steering eventually snapped due to complications from the dead AC unit. While trying to diagnose the problem myself, I backed up next to a pole and bent my driver's-side car door backwards. It shut, but not very well. Go me. I lived with the no power steering, AC, and broken door, but when it came time for an oil change, I took my car to Hare Repair on the advice of a former roommate. I asked Hare Repair for an oil change, and to just look and see if there was anything that could be done for my poor power steering. I said I didn't want to pay a whole lot (the ac fix estimate was 400 from another shop) but if something could be done cheaply, I'd love to look into the option. I was told "no promises" by jim, but that he'd look into it. We went out my car, and I handed him my keys. "The door's broken," I said "Don't worry, It's a feature." Jim just laughed at me. He called half of houston and found a converter kit for my model car that bypassed the AC unit for the belt, and as he yelled "ARE YOU FEELING LUCKY, PUNK?" across the shop at me, I laughed and knew I'd found my mechanic. I walked out with a $90 bill for everything. "But chris," you say, "any mechanic could've installed a converter kit." You're right. That's not what earned these guys five stars. As I was paying for the work, Jim asked if I was a AAA member. When I said "no," he gave me a card with a towing company's name, and told me that, if my car would break down, that this towing company would charge the tow to Hare Repair if I'd bring my car to them. Of course, I told them that I had found my Houston mechanics, and I would be bringing this, and all subsequent cars back to them for service. I thanked them for the free towing and walked out to my car. As I opened my door, I noticed that it opened and shut fluidly. MY DOOR WAS FIXED. I stood in shock. I turned around and looked through the windows and Jim and his partner were standing at the counter, laughing hysterically. THEY HAD FIXED MY DOOR FOR FREE AND THEN SURPRISED ME WITH IT. Let me repeat that. THEY FIXED MY DOOR. FOR FREE. AND THEN SURPRISED ME WITH THE REPAIR. How many times has an auto mechanic done that for you, ON YOUR FIRST VISIT? These guys are phenomenal. Amazing. Wonderful. Nice. Smart. Funny. Knowledgable. And hands down, the BEST mechanics in Houston. Try them out, you WON'T be disappointed. read more

Quick Read: Be cautious about this place. I had multiple parts replaced at once with Jim and his guys and one by one all of the parts failed in some fashion. Full Description: I'm not sure what occured the opposition on the first visit, but Jim told me I would only get into trouble by using tools on my vehicle. I ignored his rudeness and decided to come back based on the reviews on yelp. Jim stated, "you shouldn't have come back!" For which I replied, "you've got amazing reviews on Yelp!" The water pump (one of many parts) failed within months after the replacement. They also stripped a bolt for the water pump, but they atleast got it on! Now it's difficult to get off! They've cut factory zip ties and didn't replace them (this may not seem like much, but take into account that if they're willing to take short cuts and strip bolts then what?). I can't say for certain that it was this company as I brought my own parts which were of medium to high end quality. In other words, these parts weren't the cheapest available. However, I just can't understand how all of the parts that I replaced at Hare Repair failed based statistically. Maybe one part failing I can understand, but all of them (and only from Hare Repair...)... I just don't know. read more

In my reviews I try to offer a different point of view than others but I simply can't on this one--Hare Repair is amazing. We all know how frustrating and hard it can be to find a great mechanic and I've found one! My friend recommended them when my AC broke last week (in Houston in late May--not great!) and I checked out the reviews and had a good feeling. They were even better than I imagined! As some of the other Yelpers have commented, they are so good about breaking down exactly WHAT they are charging you for--i.e. x amount for labor, y amount for this part, etc. Look, I'm a 26 year old girl who doesn't know about cars and they are great about dumbing it down and actually explaining the process so you have an idea about what's happening. They also were into a test to find a leak, found it immediately, and then didn't charge me for the test when they totally could have and I would've been none the wiser. The best part? My car wasn't done yet but my friend who was able to give me a ride to pick it up was ready so I just had her drop me off and as I waited in their (very comfortable) waiting area one of the mechanics came in and offered me a water or a soda and then jokingly offered a beer and I jokingly accepted the beer. I've taken my car here twice. Once to get the oil changed just to try them out and then again more recently when the check engine light came on. The engine code indicated a leak in the evaporative emissions system. Jim estimated the cost of repairs at around $450 saying that it would require replacing a solenoid and two way valve and that the gas tank would have to be removed to get to them. I decided to get a second opinion and took my car to HCS Automotive. They replaced the gas cap and cleared the engine code. My check engine light has not come back on in over a month. I really can't say enough great things about this place. In an economy where everyone is trying to nickel and dime you, and squeeze you for every last penny, its so REFRESHING to find a mechanic/business that is HONEST and FAIR! One a Saturday night during the Summer, I ran over a curb--a BIGGIE! I had the tire checked and everything seemed to be okay. Fast forward a couple of months later, and i noticed, the hub cab started rubbing against my tire, then progressed to making a LOUD noise like I was rolling in a hoopty! I called over to Hare, spoke to Jim, and he told me to bring it right way. I did, and he ended up fixing it within 20 minutes. I then asked him if he thought I needed a tire rotation, or new tires (I recently had been told I needed both when i got my oil changed, and i was interested to say what Jim would say) NEITHER! he said, you have a bit more to go with those puppies, and your alignment is fine, JUST STOP RUNNING OVER THINGS! This was my first time at Hare and it was a great experience. I took my 2009 honda civic in for new brakes and to change a brake light. I brought in the car at 8am. They called me back at around 10 to let me know that I only needed new front brakes and the rear ones were fine. He quoted $198 for the brakes and broke down the brand of the brakes, how much the part were, and how much was labor. Changing the brake light was only around $12. The car was ready for pick up by noon. It was a great and easy experience. They didn't try to sell me anything extra and it was quick! Everyone was really polite too. I took my old Mazda here years ago for a basic service and mysterious check engine light. Initially I wanted a "tune up", but the guys instructed me not to call it a "tune up" because that is a good way to get ripped off from car service places!!!!! The price to have the car looked at ended up being a steal, and they were super cool and didn't try to add pointless services. I upgraded a couple years ago to an Audi A3 TDI (diesel), and after being quoted almost $1000 for a 35,000 service, I remembered these guys. Unfortunately, they told me they didn't have the right mechanic for my diesel on hand (searching), and didn't want to touch my car. I give them super props for their honesty. The only thing worse than letting a dealership price gouge is having someone mess up a car because they don't know how to work on it. So a big thanks! Hope they find someone soon. read more

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger that seems to take a perverse delight in presenting me with very doable-seeming repairs which balloon out into nightmare scenarios. When I get tired of dealing with all that, I take it in to Hare Repair and Jim and his crew get me fixed up in a jiffy. He also seems genuinely concerned that I might spend too much money - at one point he mentioned that a repair needed to be done but that he "thought I could handle it" and didn't want to see me wasting my money. Ok now the black stallion was having some problems with the acceleration. After taking it to a few shade tree mechanics I decided to take it to this awesome place. I call and spoke to Jim he told me bring it over and we can take a look at this the following day since they were busy that day. The next day i get a call about 9 am and he tells me its my MAF senson he said give him a few hours to make sure. I get a call at 11 telling me my car was ready. I am usually the lazy types when it comes to writing reviews. But Hare Repair experience was too good for not sharing. I was greeted with friendly professional people all along. I just needed oil change and diagnostics on my honda accord ex-l. They found faulty catalytic converter and told me their estimate. But they said I should replace it at other shop which is cheaper. They were honest about the part costing more in their shop because they got the parts for more. I have never seen repair shop recommending another cheaper place. Plus they never forced me or tried to convince me to spend money to change something in my car unlike those honda dealers out there. They just recommend changes and give you estimate. I don't give 5-star reviews unless a business goes above and beyond expectations (and the 84 reviews w/5-star average set some high expectations!), and Jim still went well beyond!! Think of Jim like your car-genius dad or grandpa. He touts providing the most "honest & quality" service, and it is TRUE! My story: I took my car in at 8:30am just before heading to work and it was done by 12:55pm. I took an Uber to/from work to pickup my car during lunch, and with the Uber fares included, the total cost of my repairs WAY undercut the rates other mechanics had quoted for the same work. Instead of replacing my battery, as Firestone had suggested, these guys recognized that it only needed a $24 battery terminal service, and replaced my drive belt for less than half the price that Firestone quoted with labor. I mentioned that I am embarking on a road trip across country next month, so they checked everything & assured me I'd be ready for the drive. Note: these guys don't sell tires, but they'll tell you if you need them & suggest going to a place like Discount Tires for the best rates. When Jim called me in the morning with his diagnosis of what repairs were necessary, I asked him to also check one of the shields underneath my car that was hanging down and just needed to be screwed in, and he said "already done!" Love this place!! Above all, Jim takes immense pride in his work, truly providing the most "honest & quality" service I've ever found. Overview: Wish there were more shops like this. Very friendly, honest and professional. You would think mechanics would realize that being honest and genuinely trying to help a customer would be good for business. Hare Repair practices this obvious truth and has converted me into a repeat customer. Detailed: Found these guys on Yelp. Called Jim Friday set up for Monday. Within 2 hours of showing up I was a satisfied customer. Car 2004 mercedes slk Horn & break lights not coming on so it could not pass inspection. I told them I wanted to find out the cause as I had changed fuses and light bulbs with no results. I also told them I will be starting automotive tech school and wanted to fix anything not overly complex. After 90 minutes, they walked me back and showed me how to repair myself. It was the brake switch and horns. Both cheap simple fixes. Total cost: $99. Parts on Ebay $60. And about 45mins Mercedes North Houston wanted to charge $532 + tax for the same repair read more

These guys are amazing! When I was going to Hare Repair I had a Saturn SL2 that was getting on in age, which meant stuff started to wear out. After getting some questionable recommendations from other repair shops I tried Hare based on an online recommendation. Boy I was glad I did! I got straight talk and a good deal on the repair. The staff are friendly and seem to really enjoy what they are doing. It felt more like I was walking into somebody's dream hobby than some stiff and serious business. One day my Saturn really crapped out on me, and when I took it in to Hare they gave me a straight answer. "If I were you I would just get another car." This was after just hearing the engine. They didn't even try to charge me to have the car checked out (he said he would do it if I wanted, but said he already knows the results). He was upfront about the costs of replacing the parts I needed (the engine to be exact). Even better he said to call him if I wanted help, and that entire day I was running around trying to find another car, and I called Hare Repair 3-4 times asking for advice. Every time I got friendly and accurate advice... even though they weren't going to make a single cent off me! You can't find that kind of service just anywhere. Do yourself a favor. Going ahead and agreeing with everyone else. I just needed an oil change and "check general" for my 2002 Explorer Sport, but I was afraid my old car might need some work just based on age and mileage. The folks at Hare Repair got me an appointment 2 hours after I called. They were silly and friendly and took my car as soon as I arrived. After about 45 minutes on a comfy leather couch, they called me over and told me my car is in EXCELLENT shape (/pats self on back). He told me about little parts here and there that will need some work in 5k or 10k miles, but nothing needs attention just yet. My oil/filter change plus tire pressure change and the check general cost a total of $96. I will 100% be returning to this garage when those little things need fixing in a few months! read more

We are new to Houston and I am so happy I found a great mechanic! These guys are awesome. My 14 month old and I walked in about the same time as someone else and the guy behind the counter said, she has the kid, she goes first. Amazing! I told him what happened and he thought it was a tire issue but he would check it out. We waited in their waiting room which had great toys for my daughter. While in there, I needed to change her diaper and asked for the bathroom. The guy said, if you need to change her diaper come in here. He took me to their office and had me change her on their desk! It was so nice of them. My car was done and he said it was a tire issue and nothing was wrong with the car, he also said I had a back light out so he replaced that, he handed me the keys and said bye! No charge for light? Great service. The receptionist was so friendly and helpful in getting me an appointment. Jim took me to physically look at my car and explained in detail what was wrong. He made sure I understood and recommended the best option for me. As a girl, I'm always a usually really apprehensive to take my car to get looked at for fear that they will assume I don't know anything and way over charge me for stuff that doesn't need to be fixed. I'm usually some what worried when a place has perfect reviews, but Hare Repair is legit and lives up to those perfect reviews. I was told by NTB that I needed new brakes and rotors IMMEDIATELY and they wanted to charge me almost $600. So after doing some research, I made an appointment with Hare Repair to have all that done for under $250. Brought my car in and 10 minutes later, the owner came in to tell me I had at least 8,000 miles left on my brake pads and I should wait, get through the holiday season, and bring the car back for brakes after a couple oil changes. They contacted me quickly and were very upfront about the price and the possible issue with my car and gave me a possible quote. I took my car in a couple days later and spoke to Rhonda and Jim who were friendly and very helpful. They called me a bit later and told me my car was not only finished but that the total cost was cheaper than the quote. I am a young single woman. I went to Hare Repair alone, and I will never bring my car in to Hare Repair Again! My last payment at Hare Repair was definitely my last. I WILL NEVER trust the mechanics there again. I just moved to Texas a few months ago and needed to get the engine mounts fixed. It could not be put off. My car's performance was perfect up until after Hare Repair did the "repairs" to fix the engine mounts. Almost every mechanic who worked on my car prior to them told me that my car was in excellent condition and that it could most likely last twice as many miles as it already had. I paid for a car inspection and vehicle registration and updated my car insurance a week before the engine mounts were worked on which costed almost $1000.00... and then my car's engine dies less than a few weeks later. I checked the fluids in my car the day before it was worked on ,and an auto inspector checked them a week prior to that..the coolant and oil containers were practically full. All of a sudden, on the highway..I am driving and the temp gauge starts acting up and the engine almost instantly locks. thank god my vehicle was able to get out of the way of oncoming traffic...yes prayer works! When I saw the owner of Hare repair he explained that the most obvious reason for the engine dying was that the car's coolant ran out....(but it was full before the repairs were done) he also said that the car was old and it was probably about to die anyway...then to "help me" his best advice was to scream and shout...? i only make close to minimum wage and so this was no laughing matter! then there was silence..and i asked what to do...he suggested that i replace the engine? but in my mind ...a 1998 vehicle is not worth spending 2k on..especially for an engine repair that might not fix the "real" problem. again in my mind that was not the best advice...so i was being disserviced again and again. soon after, when i rushed to use Hare Repair's restroom (after a woman and her child used it)...the owner said "everybody has to use the restroom today"..using an insensitive tone. that comment and the way it was made and the timing of it was unnecessary and wrong! when i asked if i could leave my car with them until i could figure out how to help myself...the owner said yes..but a mechanic from behind him rudely interfered with what i was doing and saying and asked, " Isn't she getting a wrecker"? It's none of his business! I never even said I wanted to do that yet..my car died a few hours ago and i was still attached to it. How rude!! When I asked for some financial assistance with the cost of possibly replacing the engine somewhere else (since they could not fix what they possibly could have destroyed), the owner said no and that I was the one liable because I was driving my car when the problem happened...I am no mechanic..but he said later that the problem could have been caused by other issues as well...if that's the case why would he suggest that i replace the engine in such and old car that could have multiple issues? $$$ I had many terrible experiences at Hare No Repairs. I lost my car only a few months after moving to Houston, the same week I left my former job, and one week before becoming a new hire (unexpected). I give them an F- and no stars for terrible terrible service! I will never trust them again!! read more

My car started acting up/over heating on Sunday and I knew I had to bring my car into a shop. Problem was, I hadn't had to have any repairs in a few years and my last experiences were not too pleasant. I am a young female and car repair shops tend to take advantage of that. I decided to come to yelp to see some reviews on different shops around town and came upon Hare Repair. The next morning I called and Jim was extremely friendly. I had my car in their shop by 9am and by 10:30 am, they had already called to let me know what they found, approximate cost and time the car would be ready. Then they called back about an hour later letting me know it was done early. I had my car by 1:30 pm and paid about $20 less than the estimate they gave me over the phone. I do not have too much experience with this shop but I would definitely recommend to others and will bring my car back here anytime I need any repairs. Hare's has great employees (truly funny!), their customer service is perfect, they were honest and fair priced. I'd say that's about as good as it gets! read more

Hate Repair was a relief to find for someone new to the area and looking for an honest mechanic. Jim, the owner, is very nice and has a sense of humor when dealing with you. He gave me a well priced quote that was significantly cheaper than the dealer for a Lexus that needed work. He also told me I didn't need certain things fixed that the dealer was trying to charge me for. My car was ready on the same day for a brake job and Jim kept me updated with the cost before completing the job. The team at Hare Repair is fantastic! It's a small family run place, and they definitely make customer service their priority. Jim is hilarious and is always up for a chat. He makes sure you know exactly what's happening before he does it, rather that waiting until the end. I went for an oil change, and before doing anything he made sure I knew that my car takes full synthetic oil, and that it would be $68.
