Absolutely loved this place. The vibe is upscale. The mixologists know what they are doing. The food selection isn't traditional, with things like wild boar and duck on the menu, so I didn't try it, however my friend seemed to be in heaven with every bite. I could sit in the lounge area watching the 1950s or 60s looking TV they have on all night. It's a comfortable and mellowing area with low lighting. Loved this place for the food and ambiance. Venison was absolutely delicious! Elk was just ok (I'd pass), burrata salad was delicious. So was dessert and my Paloma drink. Ambiance is super cool- everything is thematic as if it's the 1920s. Super super cool to go a century back ! The one downside is the staff - our waitress (Christy or Cindy?) was not very friendly or helpful. She occasionally checked up on us with generic questions of how everything is going, but never got a sense that she was happy to be there. It was a special dinner for us- so I requested a cozy table- the place was a third full when we arrived and the host refused to give us nice table/booth even though I warned her we eat relatively quickly. Upon leaving, there was still as much open space. I wish the personnel (at least the ones we interacted with) lived up to the very high bar of the food flavors, quality, and the amazing vibe of the place itself! read more

A Hidden Gem. A Friend brought me here for my birthday, and let me tell you the ambiance is mellow, elegant, and a step back in time (I'm a good way). The service was great, we didn't make a reservation, it was a last minute resort, a hidden gem. Thankfully we were able to wait at the bar order our delicious cocktails till our table was ready, which took 5 min. The food was great, I was able to share my dish with my friend since the food came in three small, but enough portion sizes. After we finished, we walked towards the front and noticed they had a large living room with antique furnitures, couches, framed pictures, different lightings, great area to take pictures. Could be a waiting room, now that I think about. I WILL define returning here in the future. read more

This place is a hidden gem! My wife and I drove 45 minutes to give it a go. The ambience is awesome. Plenty of parking. The food was incredible. We started with some of their signature cocktails which were impressive. We then moved onto the beer burrata salad. Everything in the salad was fresh. We tried the venison and the elk. Wow, oth were amazing. We ordered a glass of their Cabernet to pair and it was incredible. We finished the night off with the bread pudding which did not disappoint. I made the 30 minute drive here to check out the new cigar lounge. I was pleasantly surprised by the restaurant. The cool art deco vibe, was brilliantly done. It's amazing how many restaurants can have a theme (a '50s diner, for example), and totally blow it with the decor. This place was amazing. My wife and I shared the sliders, and the cheese/meat plate. All delicious, and she loved her drinks (old fashion, and a vesper). We went next door to the humidor, where the always classy JJ was running the joint (I used to see him at a lounge in Escondido all the time), and it was a blast. Beautiful decor inside, and a big patio area which was perfect. I bought a few sticks and a good time was had by all. I'll most certainly be back. read more

I too was going to start off this review by saying what a "hidden gem" this restaurant is and decided to do so despite the previous reviewer saying mostly the same thing. The restaurant is built into the former golf course club house which I had seen the interior of ~ 12 years ago. What a spectacular re-making of the interior space. Fabulous, eclectic décor. It's obvious that very competent interior designers worked their craft here. It's worth visiting for a drink and a walkabout if nothing else. The food was quite good, we tried 8 dishes, with one exception noted below. We were particularly fans of the meatballs, elk and scallops. The waitstaff was friendly and mostly competent, again with one exception noted below. The only real disappointment were the cocktails. Yes, I'm a mixed drink snob, so take this with that in mind. I took a look at the stock cocktail list and saw some interesting drinks along with typical standards. I like gin so when I saw that their Corpse Reviver 2 was made with an orange liquor, I asked the bartender about that choice. He was a bit surly and not interested in engaging in a discussion. He showed me the bottle of orange liquor and said we make all cocktails "out of the book". I ordered one, It was not traditional, but had good balance and was a hit with one other at the table that also ordered one. Emboldened, I ordered an Aviation. Admittedly Aviations are definitely difficult to craft and strike the right balance of sweet and lemon. I've made 100's and still struggle. The one I was served was just plain BAD. It was a sickly blue green color and had terrible balance. I took a sip and told the server I would not drink this and please take it back. She declined to do so. Not cool. For a restaurant that spreads the speak-easy vibe, I think more attention should be paid to mixology. Aviations (IMO) contain, Gin, Maraschino liquor, Creme de Violette, lemon and ice. They should be a pale lavender or blue when mixed, not blue green. I'll definitely go back for the décor and meatballs, but will likely choose less challenging cocktails such as a Manhattan. Ps, I'd avoid the chocolate avocado dessert. I'll try to attach photos of what an Aviation should look like IMO. read more

Have you ever felt you were born in the wrong era? That's me. I'm a young spirit with an old soul. So when I was introduced to a group called the Dapper Dining Club by my friends who run this group. I couldn't wait to join them on one of their excursions. Harlow's happens to be one place they love. This was my first time coming to this Reto cocktail lounge and diner. I can see why they made an event here. I was pleasantly surprised by the decor, 20~40's themes, and thus I instantly fell in love with the joint. We had a specialty menu. I believe they made it special for our groups reservations anyway. We had the lounge at 6pm and we got to move over to the dining at 7:30 pm. What a fun cocktail party! If you are okay with, Rabbit, Venison, Quail, Scallops Etc then you'd probably enjoy the cuisine. We had bread pudding for dessert. David made us yummy James Bond inspired Vesper martini's and I particularly liked my Cherry Blossom cocktail. I cannot wait to get dolled up , in theme, to dine here again with my newest of friends. *note there isn't a required dress code but it's fun to fit into the time warp that you experience once you get past the discrete white exterior. Came here on a Friday night with a party of 8. The ladies at the front desk were so sweet and helpful finding a cute area to sit! We all enjoyed the drink menu picking fun and different cocktails. A wonderful women was singing with her guitar so we moved into the main room. They again found a large center table for us all to sit together. This hidden gem in Bonsall is an experience highlighted by great staff, a unique menu with surprising options and delicious cocktails in a speakeasy vibe. A great place for a special occasion with a romantic view and ambiance. My date and I started with two of their Signature cocktails which were both yummy, although somewhat small for the price point. Our server recommended the Scallywag, which was a play on an old fashioned and was very worthy with a strong jab of mint (in a good way). For appetizer we shared the Lamb Boar Meatballs, a positive choice, served in a delicious sauce with crunchy garlic toasts. The meatballs themselves were tender, yet somewhat a tiny bit underwhelming. For main entree we choice the Elk and Halibut. The fish was a tad dry for my liking and the bed of lentils and romanesque a little too undercooked, but tasty. That said, that Tellicherry Smoker Rubbed Elk dish, man o' man... worth another visit for this dish alone! The peppery seasoning, perfectly cooked, served on a bed of mashed sweet potatoes and chanterelles. We added a glass of buttery Fabelist Chardonnay for me and a Pizza Port Wedt Coast IPA for the Hubs to round out our meal. And, since it was our anniversary, celebration we finished with a dessert of Cherry's Jubilee Bread Pudding and a 10-year Tawny Port. Both were so-so average. The bread pudding was served with a fantastic cherry sauce and homemade gelato but the bread pudding itself was a little gummy so would not recommend. Their dessert list is rather limited overall, but the entrees and unusual selections make up for the minor misses. All in all, a great experience, we left there stuffed and glad we discovered a fun place to gather with friends for something different in North San Diego County. read more

Harlow's reminds me of meeting my husband for the first time- love at first sight. It was mutual and the vibe interesting but also electric. Harlow's food is adventurous and forward leaning. You take a leap when you order and are rewarded. We shared the beet salad, boar meatballs, and charcuterie board. You feel good here and as if someone is looking your way, lol my spouse again. The Agave Blanco cocktail was on point and my spouse stayed in smoked whiskey lane. The server was attentive and friendly. There were four of us couples and the server kept up with our pace. Harlows is this wild little hidden gem of a spot. Completely unassuming as you roll up to it. The ONLY thing keeping it from a 5 star is the evening ambience. The times we've been, there hasn't been any music turned on and the place does seem to run a little warm. The music thing was odd though, it was just too quiet because of that. Maybe just a fluke though. But if management reads these, just some louder ambience so you don't feel like you're hearing everything from the table next to you would be amazing. Besides that, food is insanely good! The servers are so kind and helped with suggestions and even hooked us up with a 4th lollipop for our party of 4 Be sure to try out some new foods you haven't tried before, they do a phenomenal job preparing them. We finally made it to Harlow's and it was so cool. Great decor, live music, great service (and super friendly hostess). The menu is a bit adventurous but still good options even for this plain Jane. We ordered the salad, charcuterie, and fried quail. Everything was delicious. Next time I want to try the scallops and the stuffed sole or maybe the confit duck wings. Yea they have interesting/ game type meats also (rabbit, venison, Buffalo), but there's other options if you aren't into that. Maybe they should add a steak dish or one or two "normal" options for the fussy or plain Jane types (or perhaps add nightly specials. I always appreciate when restaurants have specials). The place has multiple areas decorated with full on old Hollywood in its glory style and vintage furniture. It's a sight to behold making your way from the front entrance to the dinning room. Another amazing experience at Harlow's!!! We had the duck and bison en croute. The duck was juicy and delicious especially with that sauce! Bison as the meat in a Wellington was a great change on a classic and was so delicious. The beet salad is always incredible and I am so glad they haven't changed this staple on their menu as things rotate. It's by far my favorite salad in SoCal! For desert we finished with the Pear Tart and the Churro Holes. Both were delicious! As expected, service and ambience were on point. I always try to be seated in Gavin's section and wasn't disappointed for this dinner either. He is such a great host...knowledgeable on all the food and beverages. Wow, what a find tucked in the sleepy town of Bonsall. This place was previously a golf club but has since been turned into a speakeasy-type of bar, but with gourmet food. It is at once whimsical and nightclubby, with an interior filled with eclectic, vintage decor: 1890's to 1940's furniture, lamps, and memorabilia. There were several private rooms and a lounge area to relax with friends and check out a 1930s TV that still works. Live jazzy music filled the room on our visit. Our meal started with a charcuterie of exotic meats, cheeses, breads, fruits, pickles, and nuts. Everything was tasty. My favorite was the chicken pate, olive bread, and the four dips. This board was large, enough for three or four people, but we were piggies and ate it all up. We also had the spring salad, which comes with goat cheese, pecans, and pears. This large salad, again shareable, was not as interesting as it sounded but provided fiber to an otherwise meat-heavy meal. The overall stars were the entrees. I had the elk, which I never had before. It was tender, medium cooked with peppery, earthy, and sweet flavors. Those came from the beets, peas, and sweet potato that came with it. My husband had the wild boar (yes, lots of wild game on the menu!). It was a small portion of tender, tasty meat sitting on top of diced sweet yams, with a savory crunchy slaw on top. It had a smoked bbq taste to it. We each had a signature cocktail. Mine was called Red Carpet, and my husband's was a Vesper. Both tasty! We went to celebrate my birthday, as this is definitely a special occasion restaurant. We passed on dessert as we were pretty full, but then again, nothing jumped out at us. I was a bit surprised that not even a birthday scoop of ice cream was offered, but we went on a Saturday that was very busy, and they were understaffed. Nevertheless, our servers and hostess really knew the menu and offered us their favorite recommendations. This hidden gem is worth a visit in far North County San Diego. read more
