Our server for the evening was Roy and he was a delight. I think he told us he was with the restaurant 20 years! After hearing him speak I immediately knew he was from my parent's country-Jamaica, so an immediate soft spot :) Before going OF COURSE I came straight to Yelp to read reviews, look at the menu, & read highly recommended items. So I was ready lol. My date was like "you already know what you want?!? You looked at the menu??? Duh. I'm a Yelper Anyway I ordered the Tuna Poke...it was DELICIOUS. The guacamole was some of the softest, creamiest, I've ever had. It was so good. Also ordered the gnocchi, we enjoyed & ate every bite but I probably wouldn't order it again. I didn't hate but didn't love it either. Entrees- I ordered The Short Ribs which was devoured in a SHORT period of time. So tender & flavorful, melted immediately upon contact with my tongue...insanely good. He had the ribeye. He suggested we share. I wanted to say "no thanks I'm good over here" but obviously he saw my ribs and regretted his choice. The short ribs were the stars of the show! For dessert we had the apple pie crumble (might not be the name of it) it was an apple pie crumble. Pretty sure we'll be back.

Mike's was the site of a business dinner this past Thursday night, and I can see why so many reviews also reference that type of event - it's a fairly intimate restaurant that's loud enough where you don't have to worry about other tables listening to you, but quiet enough where you can have conversations with colleagues pretty easily. It also helped that we were off in a side area that was a little more private. Full disclosure - I can't envision too many scenarios where I would buy food this expensive, even for a one-off, celebratory dinner. Especially with my recent recon work in Rockland County, it's clear that Kosher food has a huge markup for whatever reason (The prep work required? Because they can? Who can say.) but this was pretty nuts. Even when I go to a non-Kosher, higher-end steakhouse - Liberty Prime in Jersey City comes to mind - you're getting expensive dishes but it's more in the range of $50 or $60. When the food you're eating is teetering into triple-digit territory? Eh. The price tag starts to get distracting to my palate. But...not my money this time! I'd taken a gander at the menu a few days beforehand (not knowing if we were getting a specialty catering/party menu) and immediately was intrigued by the lamb dumplings ($34). It was also clear that the short ribs ($85) had a strong reputation, so those were top agenda items going in. Thankfully we got a bunch of different items from that menu so the research came in handy. I was a big fan of the Signature Tuna Poke Nachos ($43) that showed up almost immediately - if there hadn't been tons of other edible distractions I would have focused more on that. Very creamy and fresh, and the added bonus of not being too messy; nacho dishes tend to disintegrate right before they get in my mouth, but this app had the courtesy of waiting a few extra seconds before destroying itself. Some of my compatriots knew about my lamb dumpling preference and immediately alerted me to their presence on the other end of the table. (Hashtag not all heroes wear capes.) Honestly? I couldn't decide if I really liked them. It was a fascinating taste but my gut said there were too many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak - the lamb was delicious but I thought the spiced hibiscus tea gave it an overwhelming perfume-y vibe, which made me think they didn't trust the lamb to sell itself. It was warmly received on the whole, so that may be a minority opinion. The short ribs were excellent - $85 excellent? Debatable. One characteristic of these expensive dishes is that you don't feel disgusting after eating them. The ribs (despite literally being a hunk of animal meat) were very light and tender, so even after demolishing them in about three minutes I was still feeling frisky. The only item I had that I legitimately was a little disappointed in was the sweet yam fritters (I think $19) - great concept in theory, but they seemed a little bland and REALLY needed the sweeter fruit-like sauce that came with it. I'm not sure if that was more about the yam itself or the coating being too thick and taking away from the yam, but I was left wanting more from that. The service was top-notch. We definitely got special VIP-like treatment here so I can't say it's indicative of a normal dine-in experience, but I'll take it. The waitstaff was always nearby to fill up wine or water glasses without seeming oppressive or lurking right in the background, which is a tough balancing act. Would I come back with my own wallet? Eh, not sure. But I would DEFINITELY let someone else finance an expedition here.

For those who do not know, during the holiday season there are no reservations. It is first come first serve. There are two lines, 1 for dining and another for standing/bar. The dining of course was wrapped around the corner. The Bar line was only 5 people deep. The restaurant opens at 1230pm, i came up around 12:55. Earlier the better people! Waited about 20 min before we were allowed in. First and foremost, gorgeous, it looks like Christmas threw up inside. Every wall, ceiling, nook and cranny was decorated. We went upstairs and it was a bit cramped so we walked downstairs. We had to standby about 10min for a barstool till we were seated. Menus were brought out promptly. Your basic american food selection. Burgers, salad, pasta, etc. We had just eaten so we ordered cocktails. Delicious. They have an assortment of holiday drinks or just wine or beer. Service was good. Overall no complaints. Just really packed. Try and get here early. Would definitely come back.

My head was on a SWIVEL ready for someone bursting through a door with an axe. I was completely lost looking for "Room #4," and began to spiral. I soon realized that I just took the wrong elevator, and found the room pretty easy once I took the correct elevator lol. Once I gathered my composure and found Room #4, I could finally appreciate how stunningly beautiful this place was. It is like an Oligarch's MANSION straight from the 19th century. It's tasteful luxury, when luxury meant more than just cookie cutter modern architecture. They had an open bar and some bomb horderves all night, with my favorite being this fresh tuna on top of a cucumber. I ate like 30 of them. Me and the lady in a tuxedo walking around with the tray became well acquainted. Reservations are a must. Strict dress codes are adhered to so be mindful of that or you will be asked to enter at a different entrance or even turned around. The coat check was very prompt and all business, multiple staff members that run this, keeps the line moving. No tipping necessary and there's a sign to tell you it's forbidden. There's even a seating area and cubbies for you to stow away things you don't want to bring into the event. Elevators lead to multiple floors and separate private halls or rooms for your event. I couldn't really take photos given it was my company party but I will tell you, the hor d'oeuvres and dinner didn't disappoint. There was even a bartender dedicated to our party. So throughout the evening, we were able to get cocktails and wine. During dinner, it was a seamless service. Appetizers and entrees came out to every table as if by clockwork. There was a nice pause between dinner and dessert time. The staff turned over the tables swiftly without any interruption to our speeches and social interaction. My last lunch here came just as COVID was jolting the world and markets were collapsing, and the tension was palpable. It almost felt as though fund managers were eavesdropping on neighboring tables for another scrap of intelligence about just how ugly things were about to get; for the next few weeks, the answer was very ugly indeed. Most of the time, though, people-watching is simply part of the pleasure. Michael's has spent decades attracting the people who trade in money, information, and influence, while maintaining the warmth and visual character that make you want to linger over breakfast or lunch. It is precisely what you might expect the third oldest gentlemens' club in the United States to look like, replete with billiards tables, a library, and old-timey bathrooms spread out among multiple floors. Thankfully, the bathroom attendants have been dispensed with. The dining room has the same aesthetic. The kitchen, however, pumped out some first rate chow. Your correspondent's steak was expertly seasoned and prepared. The sides, while not terribly creative (which would, it must be said, be out of place here), were competently executed. The fig and parma ham appetizer, on the other hand, was creative, delightful, and attractive to behold. Service was fairly formal, but not stuffy, which was a pleasure. A great table for dinner.
