It was difficult getting a reservation for the time we wanted so I booked for 45 minutes later. We arrived at our desired time, told the hostess we were early and immediately seated. Water and excellent bread arrived immediately and the waiter was helpful describing dishes and giving advice. Salads were fresh and crisp. Caesar was nicely dressed and the mixed salad was a nice combination with well balanced herb vinaigrette. Seafood dishes had large amounts of fresh seafood and the veal picatta had the lemony flavor you expect without excessive acidity. Dessert was tasty and innovative. The ricotta based cheese cake wasn't as smooth as the cream cheese form but the citrus flavor was great. Throughout the meal water and bread were refilled, plates from completed courses removed and next delivered without being overly hovering. All in all a really great meal. read more

Delicious and dependable! I've been going here for years and it's still one of my favorite spots before or after a Broadway show. It works especially well for a mixed group since they have plenty of options including dishes without meat and everyone can find something. Even my picky niece and nephew were happy. This was my first time at this restaurant and the only reason I selected it was because it was close to the theatre I was attending (literally across the street). Second the waiter who took our order was polite and on point with specials and knowledge of the menu. He (just never caught his name) suggested the Rigatoni which chicken and sausage. I am not really a pasta eater but baby that dish could change that; it was DELICIOUS. I even liked the anchovy dressing on my Caesar Salad and I dislike anchovies. All the dishes ordered (chicken parm, mussels chicken paillard etc.) everyone enjoyed them immensely. The only negative was when the Chicken Paiikard arrived it was supposed to a shared dish by the elderly couple and they asked for regular dinner plates from one of the servers. It took the gentleman who took our order to step in and said sure, lucky their food was still hot. Common Sense is not so common for all. Five stars for food. Their house bread alone was so deliciously warm & soft. We ordered mozzarella appetizer, and 2 pastas to share. They were all very good, especially enjoyed their linguine. Each dish was perfectly seasoned, and cooked very well. A star knocked down for 2 reasons. One was that their AC was broken, during a heatwave in New York. They did let us know when we arrived, but it was a bit of inconvenience. Another reason was that their beer was not cold, which my husband was not thrilled about. On a hot day with no AC, it would be nice to be served a cold beer. But unfortunately, the beer was also lukewarm. On another hand, my spritz cocktail was cold and tasty. It was unfortunate that we visited on their off day, but I know problems arise. I did very much enjoy the food and service at Trattoria, and would come back on my next visit to New York. He gave great recommendations and the whole team was fantastic. We ordered a bottle of Chianti. It was just a short walk to the Circle in the Square Theater allowing us to have a perfect meal from cocktails to dessert and get to the theater by doors opening. We tried the New York Sour and the passion fruit mojito and the frito misto and carpaccio to start along with bread for the table. For entrees we shared the fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken, the Linguine Nere Alla Monsignore (black squid ink pasta), and the pappardelle al buon gustaio. All three pastas were delicious but my favorite had to be the pappardelle. Everything was super flavorful without being overwhelming. The linguine was filled with seafood and had a very light sauce but packed with flavor and the fettuccine was creamy without being heavy. And lastly the pappardelle was hearty without being too much. Finally for dessert we ordered the affogato, a mini cannoli, the ricotta cheesecake, pistachio tartufo, and the tiramisu. The affogato was perfect! Everything you'd want in an affogato, sweet, not bitter, and full of coffee flavor. The little biscotti that came with it complimented it perfectly. The mini cannoli was a fun little dessert, the pistachio tartufo was just like chocolate covered ice cream, the tiramisu was solid, and the cheesecake I could have gone without. So we made the controversial choice of ordering a pasta dish as our appetizer because everyone in my group wanted to try the gnocchi but weren't bold enough to commit to it and this may revolutionize how we approach appetizer selection in the future! I ordered the veal sorrentino which was good but my mom's order of eggplant Parmesan was the best dish of the table (this was not on the dinner menu but they are able to make it on request). First, we were told by our server that it was a scratch kitchen, so any changes to fit dietary needs could be accommodated. However, when I asked if they could do a veal parm (which they appear to offer if you order online) since they offer a chicken parm on the menu, I was told that "it depends on the chef -- they can get grumpy about it so [he] would prefer not to ask." Having worked in restaurants I didn't think it was a particularly odd request, again, especially given that it appears to be available for order online. Instead, I got the linguine with clams. The clams were small and tough. The portion was pretty small for the money and pretty bland. Also, the bread at my table was stale. All entrees had a good-sized portion. For dessert we orders the pistachio tartufo which was delicious, and the sorbet which was good (we opted for 2 scoops of mango and 1 scoop raspberry). My clam linguine was very flavorful and the pasta was served al dente which I like but my one complaint is that a good number of the shells had no clams in it or if it did they were very very tiny.
