Harner's, how have I not tried you sooner? I'm not sure if you're an amazing bakery with a restaurant or an amazing restaurant with a bakery? Either way, you rock! My bride and I both had the Denver Omelette, there was a $1 up charge for the most amazing raisin bread toast that I highly recommend. The Omelette was fluffy, cheese nicely melted and a just right amount onions, green peppers and a more than generous amount of ham. Our server mad sure our coffee cups were always filled and was very friendly. It's a good thing we made our bakery purchases before having breakfast as they had an excellent selection. After breakfast it looked like a swam of locusts invaded as many of the previously full shelves were empty. There is an old school charm to Harner's, as it opened in 1960. The ambience is like a warm hug when you steep into your Midwest Aunties house. The menu was expensive with lots of homestyle menu options from their award-winning fried chicken to pig roast on the weekend. They have a salad bar for you veggie heads that comes with soup and bread. You can pick from the platter of an entrée item or the meal. With the ladder coming with the soup and salad bar. I gotta say the prices are pretty high, but if you want to fill your belly with good old-fashioned Americana cuisine, this is the place. The service was good. Everyone was friendly. I have to say I got a lot of stairs because I stuck out like a sore thumb in there. Now to the food it's just OK. Well after 12 years and 202 visits, I'm done. Last three visits have gone down hill. Owner Jody couldn't care less. Servers are ghosts and have to be tracked down. Last visit cashier couldn't make proper change. Even used a calculator and was going to pay me back an extra $9. I should have just taken the extra $14 she initially was going to give me for the screwups, Jody finally told her the amount I knew all along and was trying to explain simple math. I have wanted to come here for years, I have admired their amazing bakery at various family functions. My sister in law always has a coffee cake from Harner's on Christmas and it's truly one of the greatest cakes I have ever eaten. I just knew the restaurant would be great. It's very.... kina old school lunchroom meat and potatoes food. They have something called a pig roast on one day a week and I NEED to come back for that, I don't know anything about it other than I need it in my life. We came for lunch with family, I really wanted to get something with the salad bar, I love that they still have one, but it was early and the dinner would have been too much. They sold me with a steamship round of beef... I'm a sucker for a huge roast beef and the hot roast beef sandwich was right up my alley. It was perfect in every way, just as I remember eating as a child. Perfectly roasted beef, tender and with incredible flavor on white bread covered in brown gravy with mashed potatoes. The beef was awesome, the bread was great, the gravy was amazing and perfect mashed potatoes. I can't wait to go back. read more

One has to wonder what is going on that half the tables are empty, but they won't seat people. Once we got seated, it didn't get much better and took FOREVER to get our food. They were out of pork tenderloin and only had vegetable soup. The burger was cooked into oblivion and essentially inedible. Some of the roast beef seemed old and was pretty flavorless. Kid's PB&J was on stale bread and the jelly seemed like ice cream syrup - it was almost a neon pink and very odd in texture. We took some things home from the bakery and even that was off (the two peanut butter cookies looked like they had been cut out of whole cookies). I had such high hopes. read more

They have raised their menu prices the past few months, but all restaurants have. The food is tasty and portions are adequate. The cream horns in the bakery are the best. Pastry sizes are smaller than previous. My only issue is that they never make enough pecan rolls, a favorite in my house. They are always out. I was lucky because I was there after 6pm and the doughnuts are half price after 6pm. So of course I got the cinnamon pretzel twist And the raised chocolate doughnuts. I think all together I bought 12 and it was $6. So if you are looking to save $ this is where you should get them, the night before you want them or eat them at night. As for taste, they were good. The bakery itself has so much to choose from. I've never seen so many options. My family ate lunch here once. I have not eaten there but there was a line at 6pm. read more

Eat the donuts! Don't call. Harners, please train the people who pick up the phone. They are losing business for you. The donuts here are amazing and have spoiled us for all other donuts. You pay for it, but they have very good cakes and pies too. The ladies in the shop at the Galena Street location are fantastic. However, don't bother calling the main bakery. Several times I have called the main location but ended up canceling my order because the girl could not answer my reasonable questions and was also rude. The reasonable questions are something like; how many people does it serve or what size is it. Apparently, it all "depends on how you cut it". We stopped by for breakfast during the week, and the place was packed. So that's always a good thing. When we walked in, the greeting was ok, a little dry, lbs. But we got seated quickly, ordered quickly, and the food came out quickly. I came for the sausage/biscuits & gravy. My guy got the ham and cheese omelet. I didn't like my order. It was bland. The white gravy didn't have a kick at all. My links well done were perfect. I had a cinnamon raisin French toast, it was HARD. I didn't eat it, left everything there except my links. A staple in North Aurora. The cinnamon raisin French toast is off the hook. I've had it hundreds of times, but today it had the perfect amount of eggy custard to compliment the bread. It was perfect. The biscuits and gravy were on point too. There was plenty of sausage gravy for the the big ole biscuits. A good amount of pepper, but not too much to overwhelm those who don't like spice. While the place was packed, our server, Alli, did a fantastic job being attentive to our needs. Went with a friend here, I've been wanting to go here for years. Place was mobbed and this was at about 11 AM in the morning. Just before lunch. And late breakfast, and the fact that they were mobbed at this hour is probably pretty good for them. And lots of old people. In fact, it was a struggle to park in the parking lot or even get in the building because there was a bus blocking the entrance from an assisted living home as all these retired people were getting off the bus to access the restaurant.. Lol. Anyway, I met my friend, sat down, we were waited on promptly, despite the hordes of people in the restaurant, which was nice. He had a special which was the Beef stroganoff on spatzle. I'm thinking it was probably an October thing and about to leave the menu. Anyway, I know he greatly enjoyed it , so good on him. I was feeling in the mood for breakfast and ordered biscuits and gravy, which I was told was spectacular. Anyway, I found the biscuits to be slightly dry and the gravy was probably slightly above average. I was disappointed, as it did not Wow me. I will give it another try , as the fact that it was 11 AM and maybe were getting out of the breakfast zone and into lunch or maybe the fact they were too busy to really give 100% attention to the biscuits. I am not sure, but I will come back and try and I will also try other things, but that was a disappointment. Place has fantastic views of the river, washrooms are clean, and all the wait staff are incredibly kind . So, after the meal I went and ordered from the bakery counter, which is very interesting and they also have a deli counter attached. You never see that anymore that's definitely from the past. I had a pumpkin doughnut which knocked me out of my socks! Very light and fluffy. It looked like a cake doughnut, but was not heavy like one, and Im craving more. Harner's is one of those places that words cannot describe. It has such a cozy old fashion vibe and is always packed with old people and young families. The staff is very friendly and makes you feel like you are visiting a family friend's home rather than a restaurant. The food is also pretty good although a bit on the pricier size. I got the chicken stir fry. I thought it was a bit bizarre that the sauce came on the side but it was nice since I could add just how much or however little I wanted. Harner's bakery is not what it used to be. After the beginning of inflation, I'm fairly positive that they have altered their baked goods recipes, cutting back on butter and sugar. I actually noticed this about a year ago or so. I made the mistake of buying an apricot coffee cake today thinking maybe they got better. No, they didn't. The only thing that had any taste was the apricots. The dough part tasted like plain old bread, no flavor at all. I am truly amazed that they still have customers. read more
