Herner's bakery has been somewhere I've been going for decades and recently stopped in for Petzke. These were very delicious all made fresh only the best ingredients I might've got a little carried away, but I got quite a big box and everybody loved them, including myself and they also have a restaurant in North Aurora where you can sit down and eat as well as get coffee, cakes, and other things that I've never got anything bad and I've been going there for over 50 years. Rip off , asked for eggs , hash browns and bacon waitress asked if I wanted toast or pancakes and I said pancakes. She gave me the bill and-she ala carted my meal . Cup of coffee and a $1.50 cookie came to $25.99 without tip , and it came out with only one egg ! Never ever going back food has always been average, do yourself a favor and go up to Butter Milk in Geneva you won't pay that much but close but the breakfast are out of this world and worth the price . read more

This is the bakery cash-only part of this business. A delicious selection of donuts, sweet rolls and coffee cakes with friendly service. I didn't realize it was cash only so I couldn't bring home a dozen. A very low key place with yummy treats At least 6 danish selections. The quality of Harner's has gone way down. Lack of filling in the product and running out of products is ridiculous. How in the world can a bakery be out of common items at 644am ? I suspect the bake goods are day old. The Galena store... looked in the door after close and there it is a delivery of the next days products. Sad there isn't competition in a city of over 200,000. Before you throw out the "pandemic" excuse. Put the brakes on this lame excuse, if you want to close the business and relax a day a week, that's reasonable. But let's not use Covid as why we're running out of product and the quality has fallen off the map. read more

We ordered 4 appetizer trays for Christmas this year. The food was excele t, all fresh and the presentation of the trays was awesome!! There is not one thing I don't like about this place. I'm thankful the Covid-19 didn't kill this place as it had so many other places. The food is very simple and portions are good. I personally love the salad and soup bar. The salads are made fresh and are different then most places offer. The bakery is truly heavenly. Nothing is bad, If I could, I'd bring the bakery home, all of it!!! The service is very good, they will just take a bit of time to chat and that makes it special. Prices are very reasonable. Give them a try, you will not be disappointed!! We drive 80 miles one way just for the bakery and salad bar. read more

This is a great hometown bakery! Every time there is a box of Harner's pastry box in the room, it is a special event. My favorites are: maple nut roll, pecan roll, and chocolate frosted donut. The staff is always kind and accommodating. There are very few drawbacks, but not deal breakers: 1. Its cash only. They have another location in North Aurora that accepts cards, but this one is only cash. 2. The parking lot is small and is shared with other businesses. The lot next to the pharmacy is usually ok to park, though. 3. They are not open every day during the week. They changed their hours and are closed on Tuesdays. 4. Their coffee is just ok. Its a little weird pairing exceptional baked goods with basic coffee. But the donuts and rolls are so good that i can forgive the coffee part. read more

Ordered 75 cookies for a drive by baby shower this past February and they did NOT disapoint! These cookies are large and so delicious. Full of flavor. All of our guests were thrilled and asked for seconds to take home! I think my total only came to $65 or right around that. We initially went into Harners and bought one of every cookie they made, we decided to go with the Chocolate Chip and the Oatmeal Rasin (a very under-rated flavor in my opinion and Harners recipe was GREAT). Other top contenders were the peanut butter and m&m but honestly ALL the flavors were phenomenal. Great customer service, they had my order ready to go, on time with no issues the day of my event. First Impressions Tend to Stick With You Just this morning, I walked into Harner's Bakery (on Galena Blvd). There were two older white men at the counter finishing their purchases. Now, if you've ever gone, you would know the counter area is a small space. Two older white women were serving them, very friendly and chatty. Another man walked in behind me. After one had finished his purchase, I approached the counter. "Good morning", I said. The woman replied, "He's next.", pointing to the man behind me and beckoning him to come forward. He was behind me. Obviously, he wasn't next. The man politely told her that I was next. She didn't respond right away. Then I spoke again and said, "I've never been here before. This is my first time." Then I laughingly commented, "I feel invisible." One of the men preparing to leave heard me and turned around and also tried to bring humor to the awkwardness, attempting to change the unwelcoming atmosphere. "The food here is terrible anyway!" he jokingly said. I thought it kind of him. Like me, he was a customer, but in all his age and wisdom, he knew what was happening and what I was probably feeling - not very welcome. The woman, now waiting on me, began to rattle off a list of facts: cash only, donuts are $1.25, blah, blah, blah... The other woman, behind the counter, waited on the man behind me; finishing quickly. She watched me. Staring. Never smiling or uttering a word. Seeing, yet not seeing. I left and did not buy anything. Thinking to myself as I drove away - in all of my 20 years of living in Aurora, maybe this is why I've never heard my friends and family speak about Harner's on Galena. This is a mandatory stop for me when ever I'm back home visiting family. The coffee cake is still the best I have ever had get in early to ensure you can land one or two. Show up to late and they will be out of them. The apple cider donuts are fantastic her and a close second to the coffee cake. My wife enjoys the raspberry danish as does her mother. I highly recommend spending your money with a true local business like this vs any chain like dunkin. You will get superior quality and value for your money !! read more

Bottom line: Classic bakery for the early riser. Cash only. First, there are two locations. The main bakery/restaurant in N. Aurora opens at 5:30. The smaller storefront shop (the one I'm reviewing now) on W Galena in Aurora opens at 6. This is important because the closer you get to opening the more donut choices you'll get. I was there at 6:30 and had all the choices and time to chat with the friendly gals behind the counter. By 7:15 they were sold out of some donuts. Yes. The donuts are fantastic. Made fresh daily, each donut was no older than a few hours. Here is the run down on the donuts I tried: Chocolate frosted cake - this is what they are known for and for good reason. Slight crusty crisp exterior with a soft body. Frosting is more of a light sugary chocolate rather than a thick fudgy frosting. Apple fritter - this fritter is a lighter, more bready fritter than others I've had. Crispy exterior with a soft, chewy, pull apart interior highlighted with Cinnamon-sugary-apple goo with small chunks of apple. A classic sugar glaze on the outside is thick in some areas and thinner in others. Every bite is different. Chocolate custard - classic round, yeast donut body. There is a residual crispness to the exterior from the early AM frying. The chocolate frosting on top was on the sparse side, perhaps this one was frosted mid-yawn? No matter. The donut has some heft to it. Some serious mass. Weight. That's due to the generous amounts of custard-- a thick classic custard with a slight lumpy texture. My wife's a Brit, I've had proper custard. The stuff in this donut seems like the real thing...it's not vanilla pudding. The coffee is hot, freshly brewed, but a typical restaurant brew. Not a knock on the place, but a word to set expectations if you also know a good cup of java. For good measure I got a coffee cake for Christmas morning... though I'm not sure it'll make it home. ...it's 7:42, crowded and the donuts are a going quickly. read more

My quest for a new breakfast spot has lead me to Harner's. I've driven past it countless times, but for reasons unknown never stopped inside. I recently solved that problem, and found my new favorite breakfast spot in the process. There's two distinct sides of Harner's, so I'll break them out individually: The Bakery! Harner's bakery is ever bit of what you'd expect out of a very classic suburban bakery. They've got decorated cookies of all kinds, cupcakes, a variety of donuts, pies, full-sized cakes, danishes, massive cinnamon rolls, and tons of other pastries. It sounds like they'll make you just about anything you want too as long as you call ahead. Prices are CHEAP, donuts are under a buck, and most of their other pastries are in line with that pricing, plus or minus a few cents depending on what you're getting. Better yet, if you go there after 6:00 PM on Monday through Saturday, or after 2:00 PM on Sunday, donuts, rolls, and other fried stuff is half priced. This is a dangerous time to arrive, as it makes it *that much easier* to get even more than you realistically need. Why stop at a half dozen donuts when you can get a whole dozen for the same price??? The Restaurant! The menu here, similarly, is again what you'd expect out of a classic suburban diner. All your breakfast staples are on there, there's a bunch of sandwiches if you're going to lunch, and for dinner they've got things like prime rib and other stuff you'd normally see a diner-y restaurant that has prime rib to also serving. Breakfast is great, but what I really love about Harner's is how fair they are about all their pricing. I eat like a weirdo, so when I go out for breakfast I skip all the carbs. Normally, this results in a confused looks from your server as to why you wouldn't want a mountain of potatoes and bread. They'll typically explain that there aren't any substitutions, and if you don't want them they can just not put them on the plate, but you still pay for them. At Harner's, they're totally willing to do the sensible thing of letting you substitute your carbs for meats. So, I can get a huge omelette and a side of sausage patties for the same price as I would if I got toast and hash browns instead. Similarly, if you're getting takeout there, they knock two bucks off the price of stuff since you're not getting any of the soup/salad/bread basket stuff. It's one of those things where at the end of the day I'm just used to paying for bread and potatoes I don't eat so it's not a big deal if places do that... But, when you go to a restaurant that is so accommodating and doesn't nickel and dime you, that just makes me want to give them even more of my business. Oh, and if you ARE in to breads for breakfast, things like their biscuits and gravy are off the chain as they (obviously) make all their baked products in house. ...So yeah, both the bakery and the restaurant are amazing, and you should be going there if you aren't already. Low, fair pricing, super friendly staff, great food, ample parking, huge clean bathrooms, and they even do seasonal stuff like pig roasts... I'm really not sure what else you could ask for. read more

Nostalgia might trump actual quality in this review. I am a bit biased. I grew up in Aurora, IL and my grandparents lived a few blocks away from Harner's bakery. I'm not a fan of 'fluffy' donuts. The yeasty kinds? Blech. If you want an amazing cake donut that is made fresh and has the most impeccable chocolate frosting. This is your place. If you are a foodie and find yourself in Aurora, IL for some reason, you must stop here. When my mother feels particularly nice, she drives from DeKalb, IL to Aurora, IL and grabs a bag of these donuts for me and brings them to Chicago. Man. That's a nice mother. In all reality, that ridiculous story must speak to the quality of these cake donuts. I've never tasted one better. read more

Very distressing Hostess treatment and our last dining experience. Good server at the table. The little salad buffet was fine. the chicken pot pie was okay but I would have preferred the top to be browned and not mushy white was slightly crispy edges that were flaky but clearly under done and unappetizing to look at. This is the cutest place with fresh home made bakery items that are just the best. They have a great lunch/ breakfast menu. We went for lunch yesterday - I ordered a cheeseburger...it took a very long time..2 tables around us ordered after but served and finished before our lunch came. The burger was pretty good...flavorful but a it over cooked. Had a choice of frys - went for seasoned and the were Very good. I can't wait to try more home style items on the menu. read more

This is my first time reviewing anything on Yelp for what that's worth, but I just had to add my own nostalgic-filled two cents here. Like Kevin R. I grew up in A-town and my parents made it a habit to pick up a dozen or two for his family of four boys before or after church every Sunday. I remember both the original place on Galena and the place in Northgate. Until last week, I hadn't actually visited the 'newer' place on Galena as I moved away 30+ years ago. Finding it last week while attending town for a high school reunion brought back a flood of donut memories. I got there early around 8am and was welcomed by a very friendly lady behind the counter who enthusiastically told me the history of Harner's. I ordered a chocolate old-fashioned and a glazed along with a bottomless cup of coffee. The donuts took me right back to childhood. They are probably no better than any donut at other local places in other towns, but they were perfection for a guy back visiting his hometown. For old time's sake, I bought a Beacon sat down and soon got to know the regulars who the lady called the Knights of the Round Table, a bunch of guys just enjoying a morning coffee and donuts. Got a lot of great gossip, and felt like I was back home. Great place for good donuts, a bottomless cup, and good company. Next time I'll order a dozen to go. read more

We decided to try Harner's Bakery and Restaurant last week. We went with my daughter and enjoyed it very much. Salad bar was very good, meatballs were excellent, and wanted the soup which looked wonderful, but was afraid I would not be able to eat my dinner. We ordered the Queen's cut of Prime Rib, and it was excellent. Very big portion, delicious Baked Potato and fresh Green beans. We are took some home as it was too much to eat after the salad bar. Restaurant was clean and prices were good. And of course we had to buy some goodies from the bake shop before we left. Donuts were excellent, and the Eclair was wonderful!
