First off. Menu boards not working had to order via touch screen which I find insulting. Also required I enter a phone number which again is not their business. Guy, was nice, bolted back to kitchen so I couldn't even ask questions. After I ordered (3 piece perch and 2 dark chicken) it asked for tip amount up front and wouldn't respond to changing it from 15%. The table I sat at waiting was deeply sticky. And wobbled. The windows and doors were filthy and the place just looked not clean or well maintained. And you couldn't see the kitchen. Which is a real hazard I waited 30 mins which is normal cooking time for chicken, I used to work for a chicken place for years. Right off the bat the fish smelled horribly old. When I got home I swear I was given catfish not perch. And even if it was catfish it smelled old. There was skin on the fish which should be removed for fried perch. The chicken was a small thigh and leg that was ok I guess. The mild bbq tasted like open pit. The fries were adequate at best. I ate a bit of the fish but I'm gonna pitch most of it as it doesn't even taste worth the risk the smell warns me of. I hope I don't regret the small bit I tried. The chicken was ok but generally way overpriced and you could get a better deal at Popeyes down the street or browns a couple miles away. Hell you could get about the same a jewel for a fraction of the price if it was made fresh. I thought Harold's was supposed to make good products. I've had much better at the shop attached to the bp at exit 19 off the Eisenhower exp. All said really disappointing meal for $21 after tax and tip. Also they don't give printed receipts. Got the chicken wings and catfish basket. The chicken is seasoned well and crispy. The catfish is ok but not seasoned, ask for it to be fried hard so it's crispy. Fries are solid! I had been craving Harold's Chicken for some time now. Since I live in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, I don't have easy access to one. I checked Google maps and learned there was one near by an area I frequent for appointments. I went the other day and was NOT disappointed. I was greeted with a warm welcome and smile. I instantly commented "We Need One Up-North"! The young name at the counter was engaging and very polite, I'm sorry I cannot remember his name, I think it was Taye?. I shared with him how far I had come to get this and he made sure I was pleased. I decided to stay and test my food, so if I had a complaint, I could share it while I was there. This is why they say NEVER judge a book by its cover! Even tho they didnt look like it but I swear they were the nicest employees there. I didnt get their names but they were nice to everyone that cane in. I did olace my order online because I was fearful about having to wait on it to cook but that really didnt matter because they really did not start cooking it til I areived or maybe a little before. We ordered 4 breast and fries, 3 tenders and fries, mushrooms, and a piece of perch and a piece of catfish. Asked for all sauce on the side because we had to drive back to our hotel room. The breast and set of fries have the sauce on them. No other sauce to be seen. Originally, I thought the food would get soggy from all the sauce so we got two orders of wings and fries, one order with mild sauce on and the other order with hot sauce on the side. Got it to go and even though the food was enclosed and sat for a 20 minute drive home, it was still crispy when we ate. The guy behind the counter was very pleasant (I believe his name was AJ), he released my order back, made sure I got everything I wanted and double checked, and also made sure to tell me to be sure I come visit again on my way out... He most certainly did his job... The place is small but it was clean and I stayed inside and waited for my food, it took about 9 minutes total, so not a bad wait... The bad: I think the bread in the basket with the fries and all that sauce is maybe a bit unnecessary... The bed is on the bottom, under Chicken, fries and (most importantly) their sauce, so by the time you reach bread it's really not bread anymore...
