I really am the HUGEST advocate and supporter for our black owned businesses and restaurants; but I think that I'd be doing my community a disservice if I wrongly rate my food experience based solely on just that....I ordered two plates: baked turkey wings with baked Mac and cabbage and meatloaf with gravy and mashed potatoes and green beans. The turkey wings were flavorless. They tasted like they were baked with water and its juices that accumulated in the pan from cooking. The Mac and cheese did not own up to its namesake and the cabbage was salty but tender. So I'll give an A+ for texture. Next up is the meatloaf plate: where do I even begin? Let's start with the meat:absolutely dry. I am not certain as to why it was not cooked WITH the gravy, BUT it wasn't. Now the GRAVY: OMG! THICK and straight out of the McCormick, Pioneer or Great value, Kroger or whoever else makes powdered brown gravy mix. Literally mixed per instructions and boiled til thick and nothing else was done to it. No seasoning. No nothing. Listen, I use that pack gravy; but you gotta know what to do with that when you're using it. Mmkay?? Mashed potatoes were homemade which I love; but the dollop of the same meatloaf gravy was ladled on top; so I was unable to even enjoy that one thing on my plate that actually made sense.....the green beans: SALTY! And the cornbread that people had previously raved about that 'was moist and cake like' was dense and had not a drop of sweetness in it. The star of the show was the roll that came with my turkey wing plate. I just warmed that in the oven and threw a bit of honey butter on it because I literally could not consume that food. Our people really gotta do better when it comes to advertising 'soul food', because that comes with expectations that you will deliver a meal that is going to be of comfort and nostalgia. I arrived and the owner and I talked while my order was getting bagged. This is a takeout only restaurant so call your order in. They also do pop ups around town so follow them on social media. Found Harold's Kitchen searching on Yelp. In talking with the owner this establishment has been in RVA for 20 years (I had never heard of them). This is a takeout location only for the time being. Upon arrival, you call to notify staff of your arrival and they bring your food out to you. The owner was very friendly and displayed great customer service. Now to talk about my food. I decided on the fried fish, string beans and potato salad but somehow got talked into trying the corn bread (not a skimpy slice). The fish was nicely cooked and very well seasoned, as were the string beans. I was not a fan of the potato salad as it seemed to have too much mustard and it was slightly overwhelming for me. We were visiting at the VA hospital and was looking for a place we could get a home cooked meal for everyone. Harold's did not disappoint!!! We called in a very large order and the lady on the phone was extremely patient and didn't mind helping us make choices. We were looking for a really good breakfast after having an appointment at the local Veterans Affairs Hospital (McGuire). Harold's Kitchen popped up and we arrived in less than 10 minutes. We arrived and I seriously thought that we were at the wrong place; the building looked like it was not open. But it was and we went in and we were greeted immediately by Harold. He could tell that we were first-time customers there so he brought us our menus and sat down and chatted with us for a few before taking our order. Breakfast stops at 10:30 so we both ordered a dinner platter of liver. As we waited for our food a few patrons came and left and each one was greeted by Harold. Harold's is definitely your no frills, hole-in-the-wall, good eats experience! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted quickly by Harold!! My boyfriend wanted lunch and I wanted breakfast. They were still serving breakfast but Harold said if we wanted lunch, he would make it happen! (Yessss for the customer sevice!) I had the H.T. First and foremost I got the fish which come with two sides options so I got fries and Mac and cheese. My partner got the Cajun boneless chicken with fries and Mac and cheese as well. The fish was seasoned so well. Even though I prefer catfish but the whitening did me well with the homemade tartar sauce was oh so yummy. The fried chicken was seasoned so well that juice was come out the chicken as you bite into it. It came with your choice of two sides (greens and mashed potatoes) and a choice of bread. I'm a wing fiend, and these wings are to live another another day for!! So crispy and yes, perfectly seasoned! I ordered carryout there, and by the time I got home it was as though Harold fried it in my kitchen- steaming hot, such a well seasoned, light and crispy breading. I sit on my couch and type this out, holding the urge to call and place my order until I finish this review. We felt bad because we unknowingly came in about 20 minutes before closing, but Harold greeted us with open arms, told us about his place, the history of it, and worked hard to sell his menu, which honesty wasn't very hard to do. The menu is simple, straightforward, and definitely affordable considering what you are getting. There were four of us that ordered. I ordered the fried pork chop, smothered with brown gravy and onions, collard greens, cabbage, mac and cheese, and corn bread. Every single bite, and I do mean every single bite, was absolutely tasty and perfect. My friends got the chicken wings, regular fried pork chop, and the fried fish, and they all agreed that it was all perfect. I grew up on southern food and if that's what you are looking for, then you need to come here. It's really legit. Don't let the front of the building fool you. This is a true "hole in the wall" and a little sketchy when you drive up to the building. It sits in an older neighborhood and looks abandoned .. BUT its very much in business. This been my favorite spot since my son was a kid. We come have breakfast and built a close relationship with the owner Harold. One of my best friends. My son is now. I was put on to this place in 2008 and been coming ever since. Curbside pick up now during covid. This is a family business that has been here since Harold Sr. owned it in the 60s - 80s. (Side track, you have to get the cornbread, its soft, sweet and moist, so delicious) not only was the service and price amazing for the what you get, it was delicious, full that soulful flavors, with amazing attention to details in the food. I could swear it was cooked in a well seasoned cast iron skillet like my grandma used too.
