Luke was a very attentive bartender, server and greeter. With good insight into what is what on the menu and behind the bar. I normally love coming here, which is exactly why I am so angry and disappointed writing this review. I had been telling my Dad for a while about how fun this place is, how nice everyone usually is, and how much I thought he would enjoy it. We were finally able to come together today, and he was genuinely excited to see the inside and have breakfast here for the first time. As expected, we were told the wait would be about 45-50 minutes. Fine. The place was busy, as it usually is, and we had absolutely no problem waiting. I spent years working as a server and hostess. I understand busy restaurants, long waits, and tables that don't turn as quickly as expected. After waiting about 40 minutes, I went to the host stand to simply ask for an update. We had watched people leave and groups continue to be seated during our wait, so I wanted to see where we stood. The young man at the host stand told me it would be ANOTHER 40-50 minutes. I genuinely thought he had confused our name with someone else's, so I explained that we had already been waiting for 40 minutes. He told me our names were "at the bottom of the list" and that people inside were moving very slowly. No apology. No double-checking the list. No attempt to figure out how a quoted 45-50 minute wait had suddenly turned into an hour and a half. He didn't ask if we were willing to sit inside, offer another seating option, or even suggest placing a to-go order. Nothing. He was completely dismissive. So I handed him the menu and my Dad and I left. Then, just 20 MINUTES later--not the additional 40-50 minutes we had literally just been told--I received a call saying our table was ready. I tried to explain that we were no longer there and WHY we had left. The second I said we had "left," I was HUNG UP ON. Honestly, that was it for me. Before that phone call, I was actually sitting in the car telling my Dad that maybe we could try again another day. Despite being embarrassed and disappointed after talking this place up to him so much, I was still willing to chalk it up to a bad interaction with one host. Getting hung up on completely sealed the deal. I'm not angry because the restaurant was busy. I'm angry because we were treated like we didn't matter. I'm angry because we waited patiently for 40 minutes, politely asked one question, and were dismissed with inaccurate information instead of someone taking 30 seconds to double-check. I'm angry because when I tried to explain what had happened, I wasn't even given the basic courtesy of finishing a sentence before someone hung up on me. My Dad and I have lived in Lakeside for over 30 years. We weren't asking to skip the line. We weren't demanding a table. We weren't rude to anyone. We were two local customers who were excited to have breakfast together at a place I had genuinely loved and recommended to other people. We will NEVER be back. And yes, we will absolutely be telling our friends, family, and neighbors about how we were treated and recommending that they go somewhere else unless they want to risk being dismissed, given completely inaccurate wait information, and hung up on when they try to explain why they left. Apparently this place is busy enough that treating people with basic courtesy no longer matters. That's fine. There are plenty of other restaurants that will happily take our money and, at the very least, treat my Dad and me like human beings. What was supposed to be a fun breakfast with my Dad turned into one of the worst customer service experiences I've had in a long time. This spot was exactly my vibe - vibey, colorful, dive bar like with friendly staff and great food. Came in at 9:45AM on a Saturday and got one of the last spots in the place, at the bar. The bartender Luke was on his game and got me water and coffee quickly there after. The place was busy but everything seemed to work like a well oiled machine. The house coffee is solid and they did have a cold coffee option. The spicy bloody mary with the bacon was one of my favorites - definitely a more homemade vibe which was what I prefer. I also got their current jello shot (lemon and lavender) which was refreshing and big for $3. The menu had a bunch of items that caught my eye - breakfast burrito, pancake stacks, eggs benedict, etc. I went with the breakfast burrito with a side of sweet potato has. The burrito was great - filling but not super large, though I would have loved a tiny bit more jalapenos personally. Even without a meat, it was tasty and well balanced, especially with the side sriracha sour cream. I definitely need to come back to try the chicken salad or grilled cheese or some pancakes because everything looked fantastic. Service was quick, food was great, prices were solid. Bang bang on the door baby, but not today. I used to love this "little old place" ! Cool funky and whimsical. I went in for brunch and ordered the huggin and a quichen meat quiche, served with greens and a side English muffin. Well, they were off their game... the quiche was microwaved to a hard rubbery texture and the English muffin had none of those nooks and crannies we all expected and have come to love , but it was smashed to flat nothings on the grill. I literally ate 3 bites total and was like, nope. (See pic) So I politely paid, and told the man at the cashier that I wasn't happy with my meal. He said he'd report it to the kitchen, but offered no other choices. I left a tip for the server, it wasn't her fault. Just a funky little shack. The Love Shack! Came here for a brunch/lunch after visiting the garden and had a fantastic mid-week meal. I went with the biscuits and just amazing gravy. We were on a road trip from New Hampshire to South Carolina and got hungry, so of course I popped Yelp open to see what was nearby with great reviews. We found SB's and it was only about 5 mins off the highway so we dropped in for a late breakfast. We must have had lucky timing, because when we arrived the wait was about 15 minutes- but by the time we were sat, it was up to 45+... Clearly this is a popular spot! The inside of the restaurant is quirky and eclectic, with decor and dish names all themed around the B52s Love Shack. They have several options for boozy drinks and also some mocktails available, which I thought was nice. We tried the breakfast burrito, eggs Benedict with smoky tomato hollandaise, and unicorn rainbow pancakes with house made strawberry butter (and edible glitter! my daughter was stoked). Everyone was very happy with their choices- the food was fresh and flavorful, and the pancakes had a great thick, fluffy texture. Service was decent but not very attentive. We weren't asked about refills or if we needed anything else until we were almost ready to go- but the place was popping and they were trying to keep up, so I don't fault them for that. The only thing that wasn't great was the space for waiting- it is CRAMPED inside. We were lucky to only have a short wait, but it was very awkward... No matter where you stand, you're in the way. We were told we could go down to the bar and get a drink while we waited (myself and my two kids) but all bar seats were taken- and again, standing there waiting puts you either in the way of the wait staff or standing awkwardly over the shoulder of someone sitting at a table close to the bar. We were looking for a cool place to get breakfast and when we found one named, "The Love Shack" we had to try it. All the food on their menu are named from lines in the song. As a B52s fan, I was sold. We went on a Sunday morning around 12 p.m. We were told there was a 40 minute wait to be seated inside and that the other option was to eat at their outdoor seating. For my first time, it wasn't my preference since I wanted to see the cool decor inside, but we opted to eat outside. That's when it went downhill. The sun was in our face the whole time. I moved the chair to face the wall, but no matter where we sat, it was terrible. Then, there was a cute HUGE dog (Great Dane) at the table next to us that was getting closer waiting for food to drop. The service was good. Waiter got our order. We both got the, "Big as a Whale" which included coffee all under $10. We did opt for the cheesy grits for an addtl. $3; still great price. There were flies circling us. They were landing on our mug, food, and table. Yuck! I know this is beyond their control, but it was unpleasant. Food was ok, but it got cold fast. Overall, I didn't rate it high because of all that you read. I think if they're going to offer outdoor seating, maybe get something to block some of the sun. This is a wonderful place for brunch -- if you can get in. Wait times are usually long. Everything everyone else has said about the decor (kitchy and fun) and wait staff (friendly and efficient) is all true. The food is all playfully described and for the most part boldly executed. The sugar bun is a MUST ORDER, folks. Just don't order anything else sweet as this is a sugar coma waiting to happen. Rich and sweet and enough for two. I made the "mistake" of ordering the kryptonite as well (see pictures below for description and pic) and between the two started screaming for insulin. LOL. Great bloody mary too. And great iced tea. Make sure you look at the specials board before looking at the menu. The daily creations are really the star of the show. but if you want to order from the menu I can recommend "Glitter on the mattress" which is sausage and BACON gravy over Texas toast. A real meal! I've also ordered and enjoyed the Love rules breakfast burrito. The only thing I have had there that I do not enjoy is the cheese grits. There is an off flavor, almost burnt. SB's Love Shack is an absolute gem. We went a couple of weeks ago and it was amazing. It's a smaller café, so when it's cold there's limited indoor seating and sometimes a short wait. They don't take reservations, and they won't seat you until your full party arrives -- which honestly makes sense given the size. When the weather is warm, they have a large, beautiful patio, which would be perfect. They're open 9 AM-2 PM, and from the moment we walked in, the staff was warm, welcoming, and inviting. The décor is super unique with a total RVA vibe. Now the food -- unreal. I ordered the Glitter on a Mattress (Texas toast topped with bacon and sausage gravy, a side of bacon, and edible glitter ). It was SO good and such a huge portion I couldn't even finish it. We also tried the French toast with a flavored fruit cream and syrup (incredible), plus one of their breakfast sandwiches, which was absolutely divine. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Parking is limited in the front, but if you drive around the block there's plenty of parking in the back, and you can walk up through a covered patio area straight to the restaurant -- super easy. We actually lingered a bit chatting after eating and didn't realize people were waiting. Our server was so kind and polite when he asked if we were finished so they could seat others -- truly great service all around. Such a fun, unique spot with amazing food and great energy. Painstakingly researched a fun brunch spot to take my visiting mother-in-law. Found the Love Shack. Drove separately to put our name in for an indoor table, anticipating a wait, which there was. And we went downhill from there. I don't leave many 2-star reviews but our visit missed on each category. The check-in wait process was bungled but we were finally seated inside after parties who arrived after us. From then it was about 15 minutes until a server came. From then it was about 45 minutes until we got our three dishes. We saw our sever exactly three times - taking the order, dropping off the food, and after we flagged them down for the check. I had to go to the bar to get coffee and ice tea refills. I was holding out hope the food would save the experience. Most of our food had the texture and temperature of something that had been sitting out for quite a bit. This place has a ton of avid followers and regulars so I have to assume today was a calamity of errors, but I wouldn't risk it again for the wait. read more

I recently went to this restaurant for the second time and was blown away yet again. They had very quick service even though it was a packed restaurant. I ordered the "I Can't Hear You" over this pile of pork scallion pancakes, sweet hash, and a berry lemonade drink. We chose first available seating, so even with the wait time, we ended up outside (with the flies). We didn't make it inside to get a good feel for the indoor ambiance, but it's unlikely we'll return unless it's for a pickup option while in town. I tried the Vanilla Ice Ice Baby latte (spiked with vodka) and it was good. It came with sparkly pink topping! Our service was lacking. The waiter seemed uninterested in interacting with us and just wanted to get an order in. My friend had coffee but when she asked for milk instead of the little creamers on the table they said they didn't have anything to bring it to her in and walked away. Huh? I asked for recommendations on what to order, what are they know for? He told me to go to their Facebook or instagram page to see specials and walked away. Seriously don't understand his issue. He kept coming back to see if we were ready to order. Once we put the order in we never saw him again. Someone else brought our food and he came by when we were ready for the check. As for the food, it was ok. Please note they apparently don't offer side substitutions on everything. I ordered the eggs Benedict and asked for grits instead of mixed greens. Nope, had to get separate side of grits. The eggs Benedict tasted like it had cinnamon on it which was strange. I didn't finish it bc it was not very tasty with that flavor.
