Ok, so I've done take out here probably two dozen times and I FINALLY ate in the other day. While there, I learned three things. First, this place is just as busy for lunch as when I pickup on Friday night. Second, apparently it's a BYO because multiple tables had wine and we're having a lot of fun. Third, they seem to have some interest in dramatic flair, because my sushi came out with dry ice in a cup for some at-table entertainment when they poured water in it. Domiciled in a stately building along route 113, Osaka occupies a primo location that in previous incarnations has been home to both Olive Tree and Santucci Pizzeria. Part of a trichotomy of Asian eateries that also includes Asuka in West Chester and Poseidon in Paoli - both of which have received exceedingly high marks from reviewers - it certainly didn't take Osaka very long to make its own rather significant splash on the local dining scene. Indeed. Each time I've paid a call here, whether for lunch or dinner, the restaurant's tastefully appointed interior, as well as its al fresco accommodations, have been filled with a plethoric variety of pleasant patrons... usually with a suitable vintage in tow (Osaka is a BYOB establishment). This enterprising restaurant group has obviously spawned another winner. In the most simplistic of terms, Osaka offers its patrons two basic dining avenues: the first comprised of constituents cooked up in their kitchen; the second composed of various & sundry permutations prepared at the sushi bar. This may sound rather limiting; but, trust me, there are more than enough usual suspects and intriguing chef specials to keep you happy... And part of the fun of dining at a restaurant like Osaka is definitely NOT the selection of one menu avenue at the exclusion of the other. Rather, it is the opportunity to mix & match, artfully constructing your own uniquely satisfying gastronomic gestalt. I have always enjoyed sushi; but I much prefer it as an appetizer rather than an entrée. And, for the most part, my dining partner felt the same way. So, during our most recent Osaka visit, we decided to share the Tuna Tataki (pictured) as a starter. This is a Japanese dish featuring high-quality, shashimi-grade tuna that is quickly seared on the outside while remaining raw on the inside. It is then sliced into thin pieces and served with a ponzu dipping sauce (a citrus-based sauce with soy & vinegar) and garnished with grated ginger, scallions, and (occasionally) sesame seeds. As noted immediately above, the tuna in this recipe is typically lightly seared. To my eye, however, it appeared to be seared not at all... Although this hardly mattered, as the dish was utterly & outrageously delicious and simply melted in the mouth. From this auspicious beginning, rather than continuing along the sushi avenue route, we both moved on to offerings that originated in the restaurant's "Chinese" kitchen. My dining partner opted for her personal fave, General Tso's Chicken. This is a sweet and slightly spicy deep-fried chicken dish that has become one of the most popular entrées served in North American Chinese restaurants. Interestingly enough, although named after General Tso of the Qing Dynasty, its origins are rooted in Taiwanese cuisine and adapted by Chinese-American chefs. My dining partner was VERY impressed. Nothing but raves. The chicken was delightfully crisp, the sauce - a savory blend of soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, and chili peppers - the perfect accompaniment. I, on the other hand, decided to give the Hunan Triple Delight a try. I freely confess that this kind of all-too-familiar - chicken, beef, shrimp - combo sautéed with a load of veggies never particularly turned me on. In fact, I had studiously avoided it at numerous other establishments... But it was the accompanying black bean sauce that convinced me to throw gastronomic fate to the winds... ... And I'm quite glad that I did, as both the chicken and beef were thinly sliced and inordinately tender; the shrimp were delightfully plump & juicy; and the black bean sauce remarkably pungent and flavorful. Kudos to the kitchen. One very important footnote... When dining at Osaka, the sole exception to my preference for sushi as a starter is the restaurant's immensely popular Godzilla Roll, which I've enjoyed as a main course on several occasions. The Godzilla, while it contains a number of core ingredients - such as sushi rice, nori (seaweed), avocado, cream cheese, and cucumber - may vary significantly, depending upon the restaurant and/or recipe... And the Osaka version is somewhat distinctive. For example, in place of what would be considered a usual combo of shrimp tempura and either crab salad or imitation crab, the roll is filled with spicy tuna nuzzled by an equally passionate mayonnaise. Downright delectable... and a tumultuous treat for tired taste buds. As in many restaurants of similar ilk, Osaka's desserts appear to be something of an afterthought. Although denouements such as Banana Tempura and Green Tea Mochi Ice Cream may suffice in a pinch. read more

Excellent Crab Rangoon, excellent dumplings, excellent hot and sour soup and very fresh and flavorful sushi. Prices are reasonable and the decor is a bit more upscale or modern than a lot of Asian restaurants, but comfortable. Service was a bit off the night we were there, but the staff was friendly and our friends (who have been many times) thought that our server might have been new, so we certainly didn't hold it against her. read more

The only thing I'm perplexed about is how Yelp hasn't recognized Osaka in their best Asian restaurants. This place continues off the charts! This trip there was a line of cars looking for a place to park, a line at the door, and stacks of takeout orders. The food quality hasn't varied at all, which is an accomplishment for Asian cuisine. Today we ordered Vegetable Lomein, Lettuce Wraps, and Orange Chicken. A 4, a 5, and a 5. Sadly we'll be moving in a couple months and Osaka will be sorely missed. read more

Saw recently opened and gave a try by ordering takeout food. As we entered the restaurant to pick up, we were greeted and acknowledged that our vegetarian poke bowl was getting ready. They got our vegetable fried rice already made. The restaurant ambiance is so welcoming and nicely arranged. There is a huge sushi bar station and three chefs preparing sushi rolls constantly. The sushi boats looked amazing as the waitress carried them. We got our take out food after 15 minutes' wait. The vegetarian Poke Bowl was perfectly made and loved it. The entire family liked the vegetable fried rice and well made. I also asked for their hot oil, and it was tasty. I got some fortune cookies as well. I will definitely order the fried rice from here. Just moved to the area a month ago and already ordered pickup from here 3 times. Such a robust menu - I've tried to order different things each time and haven't found anything on the menu that I didn't like! Portions are generous. The staff is so kind every time I go to pickup. We have a baby so we haven't had the chance to actually dine in, but the ambiance is nice - low light, not too loud, has a hole in the wall vibe, always a lot of people but there never seems to be a wait. Placed a large order online for takeout a few days ago for an early family dinner. They use the Toast platform which I have used before with other restaurants. Since it was not a busy hour, I thought I would try their curbside pickup option. The roll combo sushi option had a soup or salad accompaniment but there was no way to choose what soup or to know what kind of soup was available. We winged it and let the kitchen decide. After ordering, we drove to the empty parking lot and waited. Five minutes past the time the order would be ready, I went in. Two workers were sitting in the dining room on their phone, one behind the sushi counter and a fourth at the register. Two orders were sitting on the shelves behind it. I went to the register and indicated I was here because I was waiting for the curbside but came in when it appeared no one was coming out. The cashier asked me to wait a minute while he finished something. He then asked the name on the order. I provided my name and order number. He said, "oh you are a Door Dash order?" No, I said, I was curbside and showed where on my phone it said curbside. He said "we don't do curbside." Hmmm. Ok. He then took one of the two orders off the shelf and looked in the bag reading off what was in the bag saying "That's a lot of sushi." And handed me the bag. The sushi itself was very good but not exceptionally better than the nearest competitor. There are some interesting combinations. We tried the Roll combo, spicy girl roll, Downingtown roll, tuna avocado roll, salmon avocado roll, and coconut roll. The rock shrimp were not the expected crawlers/crawfish but large shrimp with some sort of coating, deep fried and served with spicy mayo. Ambience is upscale, a bit dark with white tablecloths. The front of the house could use a bit more training. read more

Came for lunch on a Saturday on their third week of opening. From the greeter to the server, service was friendly and prompt. We ordered the 3 roll and sushi lunch specials and were pleased with the quality of the fish and prep; some places overdo it on the rice:filling balance, this restaurant did not. Plating was lovely. Only one star docked for the salad... the dressing was very very runny (pool of water at the bottom of the bowl) and the lettuce was a little big for mouth bites to not be messy. Overall will come back. We arrived on a busy Saturday night at 6:30 for our reservation and there was abrisk takeout crowd and a disorganized hostess station. We were made to wait about ten minutes before a table was ready. Hostess was quote pleasant as she balanced all the activity. Once seated, the menu had something for everyone and a great selection of rolls. I tried the Downingtown roll, nicely full of tempura shrimp and avocado. Everything so fresh.
