The croissant I sampled was dry, implying unkindly that the flaky pastry dough was either formerly frozen or not fresh, and while croissants aren't exactly the moistest pastry to be found, the idea behind making them is kneading and rolling in a lot of butter, which I truly could not taste. What a disappointment. And somehow, somehow, my latte, albeit freshly prepared before me, was lukewarm when I took my first sip on the way to the car. How is that even possible? At the last minute, I asked for caramel to be added to my drink, but that was imperceptible too. I'd forgotten to ask for it to be half sweet, so I guess that was a blessing in disguise. When you stop by a bakery late in the day you sort of pays your money and takes your chances, but I visited just before noon. No crowds either. Disappointing all around, though again, the ambiance invites lingering. I say "really good" instead of "great" because I've visited the original locations in New Orleans (Ruby Slipper), and you just can't beat food in NOLA. We ordered the same dishes we had there to make a fair comparison. I had the catfish and grits with a side of one cinnamon swirl pancake (a perfect combination) and iced coffee. My wife had the avocado toast--she said it tasted the same and loved that they cut the toast into four pieces here. My food tasted almost identical. I think the gravy here didn't have tasso and was a bit less seasoned (which isn't a bad thing, since dishes in New Orleans can sometimes be overseasoned). The pancake made me smile, and the iced coffee was good too. I'm happy to know I can get this meal anytime I'm in Charlotte. Ruby Sunshine is definitely at the top of my list for breakfast/brunch.
