This restaurant has gone through many ups and downs. Right now I would say they are in a down period. The ambiance is nice, both inside and on the patio. The staff are friendly, but there is quite a bit of turnover. Sometimes the service is great sometimes it just OK. The biggest drawback right now is the food. The menu is not that inventive, the food is often not salted well enough or bland. Sometimes things are under cooked, sometimes they are overcooked. The restaurant does have a Wednesday night burger and beer special. The burger and fries are tasty and appropriately priced for a special. Most recently there is a new owner. So maybe there will be an upswing again. My advice would be focus on the food! That is where attention is needed. read more

Pretty much every thing we ordered was delicious but a special shout out goes to the Wellfleet Oysters, the Pork Milanese, and most of all the Stuffed Trout. Hubby and I came here months ago and we really enjoyed the food. We sat at the bar, had a few drinks and sampled some of their appetizers. I am unsure as to why we hadn't come back until now because the food was really good, from what I remembered. We were in the area and Harper's was one of the restaurants I wanted to try out during HVRW, so we made reservations, same night with no problem and headed to Dobbs Ferry. When we arrived, we were sat immediately and our server came to the table to introduce herself rather quickly. They weren't packed but there were many tables dining so, I was pleased as to how quickly we were greeted. We received our warm basket of bread, accompanied by their sweet whipped butter that I could eat like ice cream with a spoon. Needless to say, we made short work of the bread. While there were some changes to the menu, the items I wanted to order were still available so, I wasn't disappointed. For our starters, I went with the Smoked Trout Rillettes and hubby had the Apple and Cheddar Salad. The trout was good. It tasted like a refined smoked tuna salad, served with salmon roe, crostinis, cornichons, roasted cauliflower florets and thinly sliced fennel. Hubby's salad was tasty as well, with sautéed mushrooms, greens, apple sticks, white cheddar cubes and a light vinaigrette. I lucked out this evening as they were offering 1/2 priced bottles of vino. I ordered a nice Argentinian Tempranillo for myself, since hubbs doesn't partake in wine. More for me! Our entrées were exceptional; hubby had the Pappardelle w/Fontina and Mushrooms and I had the Monkfish Stew w/Mussels, sans the fennel sausage (no pork for me). Both tasted great and we were completely happy with our choices. For dessert, hubby had their substitute, Warm Chocolate Torte, because they ran out of the bread pudding and I had the Salted Caramel Pot de Crème. I loved the torte. It had just the right amount of sweetness and was served with whipped cream. My pot de crème was OK. It was a little too sweet and the consistency and plating was reminiscent of a crème bruleé, which I wasn't expecting so, I didn't care for it. We also ordered a side of the Duck Fat Potatoes but they forgot to bring to the table, so we took them to go since they do taste so damn good. Harper's will have to stay in our rotation. And I'm excited about this new harpers menu and delivery! The menu options are perfect, delicious, perfectly cooked. Our family of 5 had a lot/ oysters (packaged chilled with plenty of ice), beef tartare, potatoes Bravas, deviled eggs, pork ribs, deviled eggs, short rib, endive salad. Our fav were oysters, short ribs, salad, ribs, potatoes, deviled eggs. The love is back in harpers. And there is a lot of love in this food!! Yay! read more

3.5 stars. Had a nice brunch here yesterday afternoon. The restaurant and bar are really cute inside. I liked the look of the place a lot. To drink: I had the bacon Bloody Mary off the cocktail menu although you can get a standard one included with the prix fixe price. The bacon was so perfectly cooked that even after soaking in the bloody mary it was still crispy. BF had a cocktail with bourbon, maple, and sage that was nice. To eat: I had the avocado toast which I found disappointing. It should have been called guacamole toast. Had tons of onions and literally an entire bunch of cilantro on top which was wildly unnecessary and useless. It said it came with house pickles but they should've specified that they meant pickled onions/fennel. I expected a pickle. Poached eggs were fine but I wouldn't order this again. I'd try the mushroom toast next time. BF had eggs Benedict with roasted potatoes on side. I had dish envy and kept stealing bites of his. The Canadian bacon or whatever that came on it was a weird purple gray color but it tasted good. For dessert we shared the salted caramel pot de creme and each had an espresso. This dessert was absolutely heavenly. Perfect balance of sweet and salty. Creamy with chopped hazelnuts and whipped cream on top. My dad chose Harper's this year to celebrate his re-birthday (he's a transplant recipient). His choice was solely based on the awesome Instagram photos the restaurant posts, so we were all going into this kind of blind to how the food actually was and the service - but you can't get ahead without taking risks, right? So off we went. Dobbs Ferry is one of my favorite places in Westchester - like other river towns, it has a quant vibe but takes it even further by having an awesome array of innovative places to eat. Aesthetically, Harpers is no exception; sitting on Main Street, the restaurant has a relaxed feel overall. The color scheme is subdued, there are different types of flooring, distressed furniture, and low lighting. They actually have a lot of space for tables, with tables as soon as you walk in as well as around the bend in another long room. Towards the back lies the bar which is a nice focal point. The menu isn't too large, but they have a good representation and a lot of interesting dishes to try. The bread we were served upon being seated was a standout since it came with this sweet butter (the carb's weren't so bad either ;-). I decided to start with the burrata which came with two pieces of toasted bread and concord grapes. It wasn't the creamiest burrata I've had (I'm used to the cheese oozing out of the middle), but it had good flavor and the grapes were a nice twist which I appreciated. For my main I had the roasted chicken, it came with an apple slaw, flageolet beans, and smoked jus. The chicken was full of flavor, it was prepared airline style and was super juicy. It paired very well with the apples and the beans - great dish overall. For my dessert I had the Mexican chocolate tart. This was substantial with the right heat/chocolate balance; it came with whipped cream which was a nice touch. Service was very good, our waitress was very personable and talked up our dishes as we ordered them which is always great. Part of the reason we decided to make a reservation at Harper's was because the positive food reviews and the ambiance. We sat outside and the ambiance did not disappoint, but the food (the most important part) was disappointing, or at least not as good as we thought it was going to be. My wife and I both ordered pasta dishes. The dishes were cold when they arrived at our table. The pasta (CAVATELLI) portion that my wife ordered was really small, you would have thought we ordered from the kids menu. Overall, not as good of a dining experience we would have loved to have on Mother's Day. The dinner was not worth the money that we spent. read more

Our first visit, we arrived after the dinner rush, but still had to wait a while to be acknowledged. When we were, the greeting was a wary: "do you have a reservation?" When we were seated, my daughter ordered a medium hamburger. She is not an assertive person, so she proceeded to eat around pieces of the burger that were clearly undercooked, and even then left half of it. Within ten minutes, she was complaining of a stomach ache and headed to the bathroom. We brought it to the waitress', she willingly went to the chef with the burger. When she returned, she said: "the chef says this is cooked medium, and even if it was medium rare, it would not make you sick." When then handed the burger back to us. No apologies. No effort to make us feel heard. Just...tough. Meanwhile, a table across from us--that has been drinking and laughing a lot--actually mocked my daughter about the burger. As the waiter was giving us back the burger, we noticed that the chef came over to visit the boisterous table, and completely ignored us. If you're into cocktails... please by all means go and sit at the bar because the bearded and tattooed bartender behind the bar knows what the heck he's doing....BUT... the food isn't worth the price AT ALL... we got the fried squash-blossom appetizer. It was so oily that we all tasted it and did not continue to eat it. I then ordered the steak sandwich. The steak itself was cooked nicely, but the bread was huge and stale enough to turn the inside of my mouth to the Sahara desert. I removed all ingredients except the steak when eating my meal and my waitress didn't even question it. She didn't ask how anything was or I would've kindly expressed it. This is our go-to for a Friday night after a long work week. After several visits over the past three months, I figured it was finally time to write a review of the place. My husband and I enjoy the Mack & Jack cocktail (perhaps a little too much!), and how the menu always has something new and seasonal, along with some tried and true favorites. Why not five stars? I brought a friend to Saturday brunch and honestly I think we knew more about the menu than our server did - and it was our first time seeing it. Also, they, for some reason, always seem to keep the back door open and I am typically freezing by the end of my meal, even when we sit in the annex dining area. Visited this restaurant for dinner on Monday, Feb. 25th. We did not have a reservation. I walked into the restaurant at 6:15 with two coworkers and noticed that we were the only ones there. We told the hostess that we would need a table for six. We were seated next to the bar at a table for six. We noticed that it was still happy hour and we asked what the happy hour was. The waiter said that it was only available at the bar, the one four feet from our table. We said that we would order our drinks from the bar. The waiter who was visibly angered by the situation finally said that he would offer us the happy hour prices at our table. We ordered beers and a glass or red wine. We had a fourth coworker join us and the remaining two decided not to come. We ordered a oyster appetizer which was delicious but again, our waiters behavior was sub-par. He took bread to all of the other tables that he was waiting on but never offered it to our table. He provided no guidance on any questions we had re: the menu and generally acted pissy. Two in the party had burgers, I had the duck, and my other coworker had the lasagna-like dish. The food was all good but the poor showing by our waiter turned us all off. To top it all off, he handed my a bill with a 20% automatic tip added to it and then acted like it was someone else's mistake. We will not return as their are lots of other good restaurants in the area that offer similar food with MUCH better service. read more

I don't dine out too often but, this is the go to spot when I do. Have only been there for dinner but, the foods always been really tasty. I've mainly ordered seafood dishes and the fish has always been cooked just right -not overdone. I also appreciate that the veggie sides always have great flavor and are chosen to pair well with the type of fish. The cocktails are also always creative -always nicely balanced flavor wise. The atmosphere is on the darker side, sometimes a little too dim to be honest but I find most fine dining restaurants are. I have always had pleasant experiences with staff. read more

Food and drinks are fantastic but we came in Sunday for brunch and our waiter seemed new and then the kitchen I think set him for failure. Ordered Steak and Eggs. No eggs came out at first just the steak portion and a large heap of greens. Then when we asked one egg did come out. I didn't feel like asking whether there was...or where, if there was...the other egg...so I just ate the meal. Steak and eggs? Steak and egg? I think the waiter ran the plate before it was done and the kitchen got annoyed at him. Who knows. Girlfriend order a salad and a main...turns out her main had an additional large heap of greens anyway, had she been told she wouldn't have ordered the salad as well, the only difference between the two green heaps were some fruit and gorgonzola on the salad ordered really. Then to end it the Steak and Eggs came to 69$ on the bill even though they were listed for 24$ on menu (I was told they were still in the computer under the previous week's Fathers Day price...they were 69$ then!?!?! yikes). Bill was fixed but left a bad taste to the experience. Again, food and drinks are great and we've been there a bunch...but I can't see going back soon. read more

Been here a bunch over the years and unfortunately this place has gone down hill from a service perspective. To make a long story short, I had placed a pick up order that took over 90 minutes to process. When I first arrived to pick up the food within the allotted time communicated to me, the hostess told me sarcastically that the order will be placed on the pickup table when it is ready. I proceeded to wait 30 more minutes without any update from the hostess. It was at this point I asked for an update and the hostess told me it just processed, which was exactly 90 minutes after I placed the order and 40 minutes after it was scheduled to be ready for pick up. The main issue here isn't due to COVID, it is lack of awareness and consideration from the restaurant staff to keep me updated while I patiently stood and waited (no seating area) for food I already paid for. I can not begin to explain what would happen to me if I shared this work style at my job, which FYI is also understaffed due to COVID but we still meet deadlines. Lastly, the restaurant reeks of BO and unwashed bar sludge. I will no longer offer my patronage to this once upon time restaurant and would caution anyone else to reconsider before they decide to experience the new Harpers. read more

Came here for an anniversary date night and had a seat at the lovely outdoor patio. The ambiance, music, and service was amazing. However, the paper menu is extremely limited and very different from what I saw online. Maybe it's a seasonal menu or not updated online? Harper's got too overhyped by my brothers perhaps. I doubt it. Maybe it wast he fact that we were waiting for a while after my reservation for a table to be ready. Maybe it was the loud, drunk, profanity laced conversation of the chiropractor at the next table lying about how much action he sees in the sleepy river town. Maybe it was all of that and the things I wanted on the menu being sold out. We were told the bread and butter were delicious but alas at 9 on a Friday night the magical butter was gone. I ordered a Montgomery with the other ladies at the table and this drink that promised gin, St. Germain, cucumber juice, lime and a champenoise float. While the bartender looked imported from Williamsburg, I guess a quirky look doesn't mean your drinks are great. An over shaken glass of gin with lime juice and a cucumber choking hazard was what we got. Alas I needed the drink due to the lovely aforementioned table nearby. I had the apple and cheese salad with endive for appetizer. It didn't include on the menu that there's not so much endive as there is onion - another culinary enemy of mine. I tried to separate what I could but it was a lot for a lousy salad. The duck breast I wanted for my entree was also gone so I settled for short ribs over polenta with kabocha squash and some Brussel sprout and bacon on the side. The short ribs were a bit fatty for my liking, the squash dry and the polenta was a few tablespoons. I thought the saving grace would be dessert. Panna cotta with a balsamic strawberry reduction. It tasted more like balsamic vinegar straight out of the bottle poured over a way too cold but otherwise perfectly fine panna cotta. Either that made me queasy or the chiropractor's faux hairpiece. I'll probably give it another try, the duck fat potatoes were uninspired but not unappetizing. Perhaps the bartender can do better. I'll stick with the sister restaurant in Scarsdale for my usual though. Totally different vibe. Never disappointing food. read more

Had a reservation and requested to be sat by the window. Nope. Not a problem but the space was fairly empty otherwise so tell a group, "sorry, you can't sit there. we have a reservation". They have 4 drafts and several cans/bottles options on their beer menu. They had ONE draft and ONE can available upon ordering. Both IPA's. WTF?!! I was told "we had a band Thursday night and you know those people drink a lot of beer". As a lifelong musician and beer drinker, yes I DO know but having also spent years working in one of the largest brewery restaurants in the country, I know how to plan in advance or certainly recover afterwards. This was Saturday so they had PLENTY of time to remedy that dumb $hit. Then, we ordered burgers....asked for tomato...and guess what....NO TOMATOES!?! It's COVID time, so you call to make a reservation specifically requesting an outdoor table. The person taking the reservation assures you that you will dine outdoors. 2 hours prior to the reservation time, you receive a call from the restaurant requesting confirmation of the reservation. You confirm on your end, but ask for the restaurant to confirm that you will be seated outdoors. The person replies, "we'll make a note of your request." When you ask, "what does that mean", the person indicates that they can't promise that your request will be honored. Grabbed a late lunch on a Saturday, surprisingly we had the whole place to ourselves. The staff were very attentive and adhered to all Covid protocols. Now the food, was sooooooo good, started with oyster, fresh and sweet. Also had the burrata and sourdough as an app, it is usually a main but since we were not having the prosciutto they made an exception. It's definitely up there as one of the best things I have eaten period, the red onion jam+endive+burrata+grilled sourdough=heaven in ur mouth. Both entrees, roasted half chicken and Orecchiette were yummy. My fave of the two was the Orecchiette, it was the perfect balance of salt and spice. Even though we were full, I couldn't resist ordering the olive oil cake and asked for it in a to go container, I was fooling myself because it didn't make it out the door. Once a year I go back to this restaurant to see if it has changed , but to no avail they still have the chicken livers pate on the menu. I don't anyone who would eat that at a restaurant I live in Dobbs Ferry and would love to have a place to go to once a week. When you walk into a restaurant at 7:30 Friday night and there is 5 people in it turn around and leave, but we didn't. When we walked in 2 young ladies looked at us as if to say , What do we do now. I sat at the bar . The drink are sad as small a shot as you can get for $14. What really guld was we sat down and they did not clean the bar top or dirty glasses from the last customer. The salad we ordered was sandy and minuscule for $15. Now the hamburger that came out was not grilled or broiled they cook it in an induction oven no seared flavor and no juice hard as a hockey puck. The French Fries, In the restaurant industry which I have been in and owned 5 for 25 years we have what called line fries that are the seconds the ones that dont make the cut little shoe strings, the cost of them are about $9.95 a 20 lb case they dont stand up for keep hot, the food cost of them is around $.13 cents . by the time I added cheese and onion it was $24 , the brioche bun was worth more then the whole plate itself. I organized my sister's Bachelorette Party here for a group of 10 people. We had a 6:30 reservation and the restaurant was not at all busy when we arrived. We were seated right away, and served almost immediately with a WONDERFUL waiter who was lively, entertaining and very accommodating. He read us the specials, and gave recommendations for menu items as well as cocktails. The drinks came quickly, as did our food. Everything was phenomenal. I ordered the special (lamb), while most other members of the party ordered the duck breast, flank steak, or burger. No one had any complaints, but rather everyone was trying each others' meals because they were so delicious! We also all ordered our own dessert- chocolate chip bread pudding, creme brule, apple fritters, fruit cobbler, coffee and wine. The atmosphere is rustic and old fashioned, but still has a romantic and trendy charm to it. The bathrooms were adorable and it really felt like a hidden gem. This is for a dinner for 2 on Tuesday night. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 (thanks to the duck fat potatoes). I love how they have specials here. Monday are $1 oysters and Tuesdays are 1/2 priced bottles of wine! We had a great tasting red for 1/2 off...SCORE! The oysters were quite pricey for oyster prices, but I love how they offered Beau Soleil ...one of my fave oysters out there. My only gripe was that the board showed 4 varieties of oysters, but the waitress only indicated that 1 was available. The complimentary bread and butter is solid. The bread is soft and the butter is whipped so it is easily spread. She had the HUDSON VALLEY DUCK BREAST with cauliflower puree, apples, dates, spiced hazelnut streusel. However instead of dates they offered mashed cherries. I, myself, couldn't taste the cherries anyhow. The duck breast was cooked more like a medium (she asked med rare), but it was tender and yummy. I had the pork special - pork done 2 ways with a side of sauerkraut. I assume its an ode to Oktoberfest. It was okay. The menu looks appetizing, and I def want to come back to try other dishes. The duck fat potatoes with créme fraîche is a MUST order!!!! The duck fat flavors the potatoes perfectly and the potatoes are cooked well. Some pieces are crispy while some are still soft in the middle. The potatoes are roughly chopped so you get different textures. For dessert...we ordered some Apple dish, which was okay. Need to come back for their $1 oysters and to try other food options...and of course to order more of those duck fat potatoes. read more

I'd say it's one of the more popular locations in Dobbs Ferry and surprisingly attracts families - I say surprisingly as it's not the sort of light and playful place I normally associate with a child. Also, the pricing of the food and drinks doesn't typically lead to success with kids. In any event, Open Table helps get a guaranteed reservation and so that is a bonus in itself but if I'd had more time and choices I'd have shopped my dining around a bit more as this was ok but nothing grand for the price. read more

Me and my significant other went here on a whim on a regular Tuesday. We were in the area and starving so we looked up what was open and good.... this had both things going for it at 8:30pm. They asked as soon as we came in if we wanted to be inside or outside. We choose to sit outside, we choose correctly!!! They had a gorgeous set up very intimate while being open and relaxed!! We loved the outside ambiance!! We got the menus with the drink menu too. Waitress and bus boy/reserve wait staff were on point. We got the Moscow mule and the bartender came out himself and talked about the drink!!! The mule was great, a bit more sour the way I like them !!! I ordered the spaghetti with burrata and my GF got the burger with onion, bacon and cheese!! We got the food in a pretty quick fashion. Let me tell you about the food; the spaghetti was fantastic especially the tomato sauce with the burrata, it tasted fresh and let you escape to a Tuscan villa in Italy. Even though I couldn't taste the burger, I tried, but I got stabbed by a fork by the girlfriend because she didn't want to give me any!! I guess that tells you how good it is. The fries, I did try, and they were good enough to be a meal on themselves. We ate everything from the plates, wish I had some bread to scoop up all the sauce. Once the waitress came over and saw that we had eaten everything she giggled and said any room for dessert?? Of course we have room, since the main dishes were so good!! We opted for the waitress recommended crème Brûlée type of salted caramel thing (I honestly let my GF pick it out it's a easier life that way) The waitress came back shortly with the dessert and I got to say it was phenomenal!! It wasn't too sweet, which I liked. It literally 30 seconds for us to eat all of the dessert. The waitress came back and gave us our check; I really didn't want the night to end at this place everything was great front the atmosphere of the patio to the wait staff to the drinks and food!! This gem of a neighborhood restaurant is still rockin it ! So friendly, accommodating, comfy, generous with outdoor garden for nice weather and not impossible to get a res due to it's large size. Everyone's food was great but not as perfect as my free range chicken. Just spectacular. Love you guys ! Keep on keepin on ! read more
