Let's be honest: A shopping trip to Birmingham can be daunting with the paid parking and general busy-ness of the town. Arriving at 10:00 AM (when they open) turned out to be wise. I was able to secure a nearby parking spot and was warmly welcomed into the store. Jan "Wright" took wonderful care of me- starting with an accurate measurement, listening to what I wanted, and helping me to feel comfortable with the process. I have wanted to come here for a fitting for over 30 years and both my ex husband and EBS wanted me to come also. It would have been more fun with EBS than the ex since one reason it took me so long to visit. The ex didn't deserve me getting that great bra but that is another story. Been around since the 1940s, it has been the place to get the speciality bra for wedding dresses and the lingerie for the wedding night. Classy lingerie instead of the toy stuff of other stores. Those of us who are a little heavy in the chest, it is wonderful to just find the correct fitting bra. Smaller ladies get something that helps them complete for attention with those of us who don't have to. To say no matter your size, they have a bra for you. My fitter listened to my needs and wants. After telling me that "my girls" are being lazy, she came back with a black bra. Hearing that I needed one a little lower in the middle for my famous V necks (just ask my high school and college classmate guys and male teachers), she was back with the perfect one. I wore it out of the store. I also ordered 2 more. They are not cheap but good engineered bras are worth the costs. I know EBS enjoyed the show from the side. Always have had a good experience here! Been coming here for years, at least 15 maybe more. It is the place to go for bras but they have much more than just bras. Undergarments, nightgowns, bridal, shapewear, etc. However, I have always known Harp's for their bras and the wide range of bra sizes plus cute and pretty options. Meter parking out front and within downtown Birmingham. My latest experience - The gal who helped me was very nice and not pushy. You also do not need an appointment. But I will say you need to leave your bashfulness at the door. Usually the staff are in the room with you while you are changing bras - letting it all hang out if you know what I mean. You are given a robe to wear, so you have some privacy. I was given lots of options but not too many where the fitting got overwhelming. 3 bras were about $200 - one was $44 and the others were a little more. You pay for what you get. The bras were great quality and pretty with the details. Super comfortable but sturdy. The return policy is not terrible but you are not given that much time if you want to return - 7 days. I went to Aerie to get a bra fitting and the high school worker had no idea what she was doing - she pawned me off onto another girl, who also had no idea. So, do yourself a favor - get your bra fittings here - the ladies are very knowledgeable and guarantee to have your size! read more

My daughter and I went in for bra fittings over the weekend. As the website recommended, we called and set appointments in advance. The woman on the phone took down our details and also confirmed exactly how many people would be coming in the store, and that we would both need to wear masks. I wouldn't be going there any other way! Our experience was excellent. We are each now set up nicely with a light colored and a dark colored bra. Good service while purchasing, rude service while returning. Watch your bank statements for returns, or lack thereof. I returned a bra within 6 days for a refund, per policy. I was told I could only receive a store credit since it was "over ten days" without the receipt even being looked at. When I pushed back to obtain my refund, the exasperated sales associate rushed my return and shoved a new receipt in my hands, keeping the old one. My charge was pending for four days so I knew there was an issue. She ended up charging me a second time instead of refunding my money. I have disputed the charge with my bank as the store is too far for me to drive back and I don't believe I'll be met with polite service or a resolution if I called the store directly after my poor return experience and only one receipt. read more

Harp's has been my go to fitting place since I was a teenager and they were in Universal Mall. Mrs. H ran a great business and had such an awesome personality. Despite my growing body size (yes, I'm a fatty), they even managed to fit me into my bustier for my wedding dress many years ago. I went into the shop for the first time in about four years to be fitted. As I walked in, the people behind the counter and in front of the counter kind of just looked at me like I was some unfortunate person who wandered in off the street. I don't know if it was my size or that I was in jeans and a t-shirt? The clerk asked me how I could be helped and I told her I needed to be fitted. She showed me to a fitting room and I told her what I was looking for but she made a doubtful noise and kind of shook her head but said she'd look snd I told if all I could get was the same bra style I've been wearing for years, then so be it. She brought in four bras, some of the ugliest styles that thankfully didn't quite fit, and I did wind up with a different style that I did like. I asked her for another and it was again the doubtful attitude they didn't have another in stock, but she'd check. Of course they didn't. Normally on previous visits clerks asked if I wanted to order and she didn't offer so I just stated I wouldn't have her order me one because I didn't know when I could come back in (but I also wanted to be sure I liked the new style before ordering another). She was just like okay and was waiting to ring up the sale. I had also mentioned I wanted a bottle of Lovelast and she said she'd "give" me one. When my sale was rung up, she pointed out the sample bottle she put in the bag and I said I had wanted to buy a bigger bottle. She just kind of blew me off and didn't offer to get a larger bottle. Needless to say, this experience was not the best. I'm not sure if they've lost a long-time customer or not at this point. I will really have to give it a lot of thought and decide whether it's worth the effort to go through the snooty judgment walking in and the PITA parking situation to shop there again. read more

So incredibly disappointed with my experience. The saleswoman that "helped" me was condescending and rude. I didn't want to buy the 6 ugly bras she sized me for so I ended up buying a sports bra to relieve the tension of the uncomfortable situation. What followed was her throwing my bra into a bag and shoving it in my face "here you go!" I understand commission from sales, but how I was treated was completely unnecessary, and I left almost crying. Absolutely will never return and I have already dettered a few women from coming here. The experience started out positive--but ended with me never going back there again. I went in looking for a nursing underwire bra with molded cups. The salesperson measured me and came back with some bras that were far too big in the band (I am a 32FF/H, after being measured properly), but she came back with size 36DD and told me to hook the bra on tighter settings, which I've always been taught not to do. Anyway, she didn't find any nursing bra that fit my taste/size and when I asked if I could order anything, she said she couldn't because we didn't even know my size and it wouldn't come in until after the first anyway. So, she said "sorry" and I left. I left and went to Bravo and they had me try on styles I liked, which fit better, and ultimately had me order some in my size that I will go to try on in a few weeks. Finally some help! I was astonished at the rudeness at Harp's; I took the time to get my son a babysitter and I was clearly seeking to purchase a bra. It seemed to me that the salesperson did not want my business. I have bought bras there in the past, but after this I will go elsewhere. It was a horrible, traumatic experience-- that left me crying on and off for the next day or two. I hate that I even allowed that horrible saleswoman to get to me .. Here's what happened: I was 7 weeks out until my wedding day (yay!) and was excited to find my bridal undergarments, as my seamstress and dressmaker suggested I go do! Zipped up in some sparky Lululemon gear on a weekday morning, I stepped into Harp's, and began marveling at the awesome brands.. Cosabella is my fave! No one greeted me or helped me for 10 minutes.. and even looked annoyed that I was in the shop. I expected they were just busy.. I smiled and said hello (bubbly personality!) and browsed around... thoughts of lace and garter belts dancing in my head! One saleswoman saw me looking at some fancy underwear and sort of took them away from me off the counter when I turned my head, as if I was shoplifting. (Sweetie.. I'm not shoplifting!) Finally a woman, Jan (Jean? Jane?), with the personality of Ms. Marilla Cuthbert from Anne of Green Gables, charges me and asks what I need. I explained how I needed some undergarments for a strapless ballgown, with sweetheart neckline, in 40D, for my wedding in 7 weeks. (no congratulations from her at all.) She tells me I'm doing everything completely wrong, and how I'm supposed to get the dress first .. and FINE she'll fit me for a bustier. But first-- she needed to help some girl check out (keeping me waiting in the dressing room, cold, topless, for another 10 minutes) Her attitude was SO snobby and nasty from the get go it was almost funny.. because she's an elderly woman in MICHIGAN acting like a 22yo sales girl in Beverly Hills. I told myself to be cool- and go along with it-- only because of Yelp reviews, and Harp's having their great reputation. After staring down my "Old Navy" sports bra, she began giving weird orders. She was brash and rough in the dressing room and ordered me to BEND OVER. Sorry- what??? As a Manhattanite, I've been to high end lingerie stores up and down Madison Avenue-- and never have I been more humiliated. She told me I needed to bend over more and more as she stood behind me... then dug the corset's underwires into me like I was a piece of cattle. She hurt me. We tried on a few bustiers, but they were all very grandma-panty tan colored and kinda drab! Even the old jewish ladies on Orchard Street in NYC had nicer stuff! THEN came the conversation. I asked her if she had anything more lacy, bridal-like... (like the items in the window.. these sexy Cosabella bridal pieces!) I also really needed something sweetheart cut... that was important for my dress! She flat out told me they were "very expensive" and "nothing like that comes in my size." (I'm a 40D) Standing there in this 3x4 foot room with this wretched b**** I wanted to go Brooklyn on her.... How dare she insult me like this! She doesn't know who I am.. never asked what I even wanted to spend.. and yes, I have big boobs and curves.. but I've worn Cosabella before! She whisked through the curtains leaving me red faced.. I dressed and came out. I asked if she could order the 1 bustier that actually might work in Ivory (versus grandma-panty tan) and she huffed and barked "This is all WE have here. We can't just order you anything you want." (Note: my wedding is 7 weeks out! This is supposed to be a family owned boutique-- why couldn't they order in what I needed?) and then she added the kicker: "You're lucky to find anything in your size" (in front of other guests, browsing around.. looking up sadly at me as if I was some diseased animal) She then answered the phone in the middle of our exchange... put them on hold... and chirped at me: "Will that be cash or credit?" ..... She expected me to BUY the bustier I didn't even want, in the gross grandma tan-panty color! When I politely said that I needed it in Ivory she freaked out for a second and said "Thank you for wasting my time!" I walked out. End scene. read more

After many bad experiences with bra fitters, and being told I'm hard to fit, I decided to try Harps. Compared to other local shops I've been in, this store had a lot of selection. I was brought immediately into a fitting room and we started trying things on. Now, this experience is not for the shy woman. You will be taking your bra off in front of an experienced fitter. She will adjust you into your bra. This is to make sure that you're getting the best look and fit for you. If you feel uncomfortable with this aspect of it, you should probably avoid this kind of shop. Within 15 minutes, we found several bras in my size that fit wonderfully. You will pay more for a bra here than you would at department stores, but you will get a bra that fits well and is high quality. Since department stores rarely carry bras in my size, I would have to shop in local stores or online. Based on the bras I tried on that the online shops don't really offer much price savings over this store especially when you factor in shipping costs. read more

I don't write a ton of reviews but after my experience today, I had to pop in & recommend Harp's for anyone who might be looking into them. I'll start by saying I have a large chest & have had a hard time finding bras that fit properly & come across sales associates that make me feel like my body is "wrong" so it is not often that I shop lingerie or bras because I usually leave feeling awful about myself & I don't subject myself to that. I needed a bra to go under my wedding dress & have been putting it off. Someone suggested Harp's so I went in. In a matter of 10 minutes I had the PERFECT bustier for under my wedding dress that makes me feel sexy & beautiful. Since that went well I decided to get some honeymoon lingerie. That was quick & painless too! Finally, I purchased 2 new bras. I haven't purchased a new bra in 2 years! I absolutely loved my experience & the way I was treated. The associate was knowledgeable, both of bodies & of their product, taught me how to actually put on a bra properly, paid attention to what I liked & didn't & was super quick about it. 2 bra fitters at Harps sold my friend and I each bras with band sizes at least 2 sizes too large. After driving to Birmingham from Ann Arbor in search of a store with good selection and service we purchased the bras suggested then regretted it immediately as their return policy is only 7 days even for unworn merchandise! Very limited selection, rushed fitting and I had to tell my fitter that the first bra didn't fit when the center panel clearly didn't come close to touching my sternum. I've had good experiences at bra stores in Chicago and I expected similar knowledge and options at Harps...that was not the case. Don't bother with Harps, you would do better ordering a bunch of sizes online and fitting yourself. read more

Let me say they are the most helpful undie store I've ever been to. My husband and I picked out some well made Cosa Bella underwear for me, me , me! I love the Cosa Bella brand and it can be hard to find. They are made in France and they know they lingerie! They are well made, beautiful and functional. My last pair lasted 17 years!!! I'm not saying that yours will last that long, but mine did and I wore those puppies at least once a week...they had some serious mileage. Underwear is one of the things in life I like to splurge on and quality matters to me because I want to look sexy and be comfortable all at the same time without wardrobe malfunction. These ladies know their stuff. I am very impressed at how quickly I was measured and provided with several bra options within minutes of entering this place. I am notoriously hard to fit for a bra. I actually had just given up and I usually just wore an ugly sports bra because I could never find a decent bra that fit! I had been wanting to try Harp's for years and was glad I did! I was prepared to spend $$$. You get what you pay for, in my opinion. I paid $160 for 2 bras, nude color, functional bras, nothing too sexy or fancy but they are pretty and quality. I would recommend Harp's ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. Don't waste your time and money at places like Victoria's Secret. Harp's even gave me care instructions, which those other stores never had time for due to being too cool or something. One last thing. There is a parking structure behind their store, which they told me about when I went in. I don't know the area, and had driven around a bit until I found street parking. I stopped into Harp's this weekend because every place I went to find a bustier did not have my size or didn't sell them at all! I went into Harp's praying I would have luck, and boy did I hit the jackpot. Not only did I get to go straight into the fitting room with no wait, but Celeste found me the perfect size and style within 5 minutes! I cannot explain how great of an experience it was to have found the perfect fit finally, especially with only trying on two! I should have come to Harp's first! I wasn't sure if I wanted to even deal when someone is helping you with an intimate detail you expect a certain amount of sensitivity especially when your bare chested and feeling judged . Do not shop at Harp's if you do not like up-front and outspoken sales people. They are not afraid to tell you what they think of you, and your current fit. To their credit, Harp's sales people know how undergarments should fit properly and can be very helpful. Also, the selection is pretty varied. You can pay Birmingham prices if you like, but I was offered a variety of items at a range of prices. I went with my husband and one of the girls assisted us right away. I was taken into the dressing room measured and informed to stay here. I've been on a bra fitting journey for a while now. I have to say that Harps did the best fitting out of all of the specialty stores that I've been to. Their methods of measuring and demonstrations of how to wear/adjust bras are good. I was disappointed at the lack of 'pretty' bras for bigger sizes. I'm still young, so I would like to wear "youthful" things, even if I'm the only one seeing them. Perhaps they could have ordered something, but all they had to sell me that day was a boring ivory colored bra. On another note, I think the prices are fairly reasonable. read more

I went in to Harp's today looking for a bra or corset to use for trying on wedding dresses. I was very uncomfortable during the fitting. I'm already very shy and being almost completely naked in front of a woman I don't know is unnerving. But, the woman helping me kept ripping the curtain wide open while I had nothing on. I could clearly see the people shopping around inside the store, and if one of them had been facing me, they would have seen me fully exposed. I kept covering myself up with my hands but the woman just kept opening the curtain wide every time she went out and came back in. The bras didn't fit very well either, but that was to be expected because I still have yet to find a bra that fits me well at any store. I left feeling pretty undignified and disappointed. I am glad to see that some people had a positive experience but my personal experience was horrible. I have been getting fitted at Nordstrom for years and they allow you some discretion if that is more your speed unlike Harps where they insist they practically put the bras on you whether you are comfortable with that or not. Anyway, the woman insisted I was one of two sizes that I assured her were too big. Every bra she brought in those sizes slid up as if they were trying to come over my breast and were immediately uncomfortable and moving around but the sales staff insisted they fit and refused the bring me bras in the sizes I requested. Mind you, I was not there for a fitting, I already know what size I am, I just wanted to see a larger/ different selection than Nordstrom. Eventually after trying on many bras that were too big, she finally got upset with me and brought me bras in the size I requested in the first place, then she got more upset when I said they felt like the perfect size and were very comfortable. I told her that I agree with the mass concensus that the band should be snug but comfortable on losest hook so you can tighten it as it stretches since bra band stretch is not only inevitable but guaranteed to happen within a few short weeks with regular wear. Anyway, once she insisted the bra should be loose on the middle hook I knew it was time to stop taking her advice. She asked if I would buy my shoes too tight but she missed the point that I would not buy them too lose either. My main problem was that regardless of any rules of bra fittings, if something is uncomfortable or big to point that it is immediately sliding up, those things are unarguable. If I didn't wear a large cup size, the band would have been under my arm pits within minutes or at least mid-breast so to have someone see that it is buckling away from my body and sliding around and insist not only that it fits but that its comfortable, that's pure madness. To top it off, an elderly woman came in to return a bra that didn't fit her well when she got home and wore it and they were so rude to her it made me vow never to support them with my money. I vote with my dollar and I vote for people to treated with kindness. To be of an older generation, they sure never attended 'The customer is always right' school. They never even took a class. There was one african american woman that assisted my friend and she seemed to be a dream so I can't say that about all the staff but this was my experience with the pushy one I had.
