I'm so disappointed in the issues that are now happening at Harris and how they have handled the care for animals in response to speaking up about concerns. Harris first dropped my sister as a client when she filed a complaint about lack of timely communication in an urgent care situation. Harris then waited for two months after I posted this review to drop me as a client; they did it when I emailed to get a refill but had fulfilled a different refill the week prior. Julie Keen, the owner's wife and not my animals' vet, noted in my chart that I posted a bad Google review and should not be seen. Harris also dropped my mom when they saw my Reddit post sharing all of the details of this situation. My original review concerns: My cat had an emergency appointment with Dr. Graham and was diagnosed with pancreatitis. I was sent home without any follow up instructions or pain meds. He continued to get worse over the next day and when I called to ask for pain meds and question why I wasn't given them in the first place, the vet claimed I denied pain meds. The receptionists acted like I was irate and screaming at them when I called trying to get my cat the meds he needed to actually improve. The staff expressed concerns that they filled the medication wrong at check out and my mom had to explain how the med was originally filled correct and explain the dosing label to the staff member that was attempting to change how it had been filled. In two different incidents, my primary vet never responded to an email I sent about a dietary consult. My primary vet also didn't respond to me when I reached out to discuss what follow up was needed after an ER visit for my dog due to a new neurological incident. I had to edit my review to make space for the update. In my previous review I gave details about my sister's case and explained that the receptionists claimed she threatened them and called them the r word on the phone when she expressed her concerns about very delayed communication with an urgent medical need. Harris's response is commenting on that piece of the review when they say they do not tolerate mistreatment. They also accused me of threatening them and calling them liars but I recorded the call to prove what was actually said. read more

In my experience, all this place knows how to do is prescribe pill after pill or treatment after treatment with 0 confidence in what the root cause is or that the prescription will even work. They will charge you for everything and in every way they can. I was charged hundreds of dollars for "checks" that took less than a minute each, without even being told they would cost money. The "vet" will try to overwhelm you with strings of big medical terms, all which mean absolutely nothing to the common person, then sum it up with 3+ prescriptions that your pet "absolutely needs", all which cost over $100. completely dropped the ball with my Cavalier.. brought her there as a baby, and she was having some finicky eating and some seeming gastric issues . talked with the doctor about all of it, and had the rest of her checked out. I already had Trupanion pet insurance in place~ and they were in process of reviewing the new patient history. because I bought a Cavalier, I talked with the doctor about known illnesses for cavaliers such as SM and CM, but my puppy was a 10 week old baby, not showing symptoms of the diseases. I was just talking with my vet. we even joked around about not stating those questions in the notes because of the insurance process, because I was just a new owner asking questions and didn't want any part of that in her medical record because medically nothing applied at that time. my puppy also was examined for an umbilical hernia. well my insurance quoted me no coverage for SM or CM because of the "differential diagnostic" notes in the file out there by my vet, even though I was merely asking about the breed and no symptoms were there at the time. so they excluded coverage for those neurological diseases as well as any "cancer" ( due to the umbilical hernia) and any gastric issues ( because she was finicky). I cannot tell you how upset I was that my Dr out notes in my file regarding SM and CM on a BABY that prevented the instance coverage. 2 yrs after the fact, my girl started showing symptoms of those issues and I couldn't get coverage. there was nothing in the medical exam showing ANY symptomotology at the new puppy exam, I was merely discussing the breed.. my trust was completely broken and there was no apology no anything from Harris pet Hospital. trupanion? well that's a whole other review.. they are despicible. I am sad to say that Harris used to be in the right heart~ but the money and huge client base has altered their compassion. it may have been a mistake, but they took ZERO accountability. read more

On July 10th, 2023, I called Harris at 8:00 am because my dog had vomited 15-20 times since the day before. This is the vet where I had been bringing both of my dogs since 2014. Dr. Julie immediately had us come in started Brandy on fluids and did an xray amongst other tests and labs. Brandy stayed at Harris on IV fluids until 7:00 pm when I picked her up with instructions to bring her back to following morning, which I did. That morning, it was determined that she needed more fluids, which were given to her via a fluid injection. I brought Brady home and by 12:00 that afternoon, thought that Brandy should be feeling a lot better than she was after all of the fluids, so I called Harris and left a message for Dr Julie or Dr. Doug to call me and confirm this was to be expected. I finally received a call on Wed at 2:30 pm, when Dr Doug told me to bring Brandy back in to be checked again. After waiting an hour to finally see him, he exclaimed that Brandy did not look good, and brought her in the back for another xray and an ultrasound. Brandy was brought back to me and I was told that her stomach was really full which was odd since she had not eaten for 5 days. A vet tech brought Brandy back to me and I was told that she was going to be sent home with nausea medication. I was obviously not happy with this decision, so informed them that I would be taking Brandy to the ER vet in Racine, which I did. Their ultra sound showed a large ulcer perforating Brandy's stomach which was also blocking her small intestines. This required immediate surgery which was done on Thursday. I called Harris to inform them of the situation and never even received a follow up call on her condition, however I was emailed a bill for Wednesday's service and ultrasound. I emailed Dr Doug my displeasure with both his service and lack of concern for his long time patient. In his lengthy emailed response days later, it was filled with excuses that he did not get my messages or emails and was out of the office for those days. Not once in this email did he ask about Brandy's condition. If he would have spent half the time with my dog than he did composing this email, he may have caught the real problem, her large ulcer! I would stay far far away from Harris. ***Please see their response to my review...deflecting and implying that me calling them at 12:00 on a Tuesday (following up on the last 2 days my dog was in their care) is expecting 24/7 responses from them. This was due to the what was happening with our pet. We waited a week and didnt hear anything. I called back to find there is NO priority list and that we were still 10 on the cancelation list. Given mis-information and we wasted a week waiting. I also told them I was in town until the end of the week and was helping my older mother with her cat. NO HELP, NO CONCERN and no accountability for the mis-information we were giving that wasted a week we could have used to find another vet. Harris Pet Hospital has some awesome vets. Dr Doug and Dr Hatcher saved my dog. She'd been vomiting for 1/2 the day then it got bloody. I was grateful they were able to get her in within 2 hours of my call. I had to go to work, so my daughter brought my dog in. Dr Doug called me at work and explained there was a blockage and what my options were and what he recommended. Dr Hatcher was ending her shift, but offered to stay for the surgery. Essentially, we had 2 amazing vets working on my dog. I received several follow up calls and they promptly returned my calls when I had questions. When Doctor Harris started this clinic, I felt he was always fair and only did what your animal needed to keep the owners' cost to a minimum, knowing many families that own pets can't afford high vet bills! When the two doctors bought Harris out, they kept that principle, and pet owners continued going and telling others, and the clinic kept growing hiring new doctors to the point they had forgotten why and how they became popular. These new vets have brought to the clinic ways to bump the prices, having customers pay for procedures their pet doesn't need to pump up their own pay checks. Honestly it's hit or miss. We've had amazing experiences with Dr. Justin & Dr. Doug. We get somewhat mixed responses from the staff that checks in and makes appointments. Today was rough! Just abrasive and short with me. Said it would be 30 mins and took over 50 minutes. Continued to laugh, gossip and joke with everyone else that came in, but with me when I asked a question was short & rude to me. I don't understand what the problem with my business is versus everyone else's? After an hour the lab tech came out and explained everything and was absolutely fine. The first time I thought he was having a nightmare running in his sleep. I voiced my concerns to the vet and they blew it off never telling me at any point that Bravecto can cause seizures. I file a case number with Merck they said they would pay his meds and his blood test. Because I am refusing to sign a release and cash their $64 check Merck has refused to pay for his blood work or meds and now the vet at Harris canceled him as a patient. What is wrong with you as a vet you are supposed to take care of theses animals not side with a pharmaceutical company that is in the middle of several class action including Bravecto. They had me provide a stool sample ($) for Baby Cat after I had observed that she had tape worm and waste a half hour (and counting) inspecting the specimen. My other cat, Cool Cat, previously had the same thing from catching mice and we came here for medication. (No stool sample needed at this visit). My cats share a litter box so there's no guarantee that they are back there inspecting the right cats shit. Next time I will buy the medication online and not waste my time or pay "vet price". Initially, I had to make a trip to the vet to pick up my dogs daily medication in which I was told his medication was not invoiced or ready when I called ahead. It was paid for the previous day... and as I walked into the vet I was greeted with an apology for the mistake. Still sitting here waiting for them to finish "inspecting"... Update: Surprise! They didn't find anything after a $29 fecal parasite screen, $3.95 disposal fee (even though it's getting sent off to a different laboratory who will be better able to detect parasites???) and $17.85 for medication. $29 to verify the parasites and find nothing and still give me the medication. Then they ask me to guesstimate the weight on Baby Cat for proper dosage, they don't care if I'm accurate or if it will be harmful as long as their bill is paid. read more

Harris Pet Hospital used to be a well respected and knowledgeable clinic in the area where your pet's health was the most important thing. Ever since the business came under new ownership it is all about the money and the pets unfortunately suffer the consequences. We have have had our pet misdiagnosed several times and one of them was life threatening and he would have died if not for my wife doing research on the internet and pet forums. We were being told "He is just old (he was 12) or he has arthritis. These excuses did not sit well with us so we did our own research to find out he had anal gland cancer. So we brought him in and had then check and sure enough. Our usual check ups at this place was stick a flash light in his eyes and ears and a thermometer up his butt and all looks good so nothing is wrong. Nice exam! Then we took him in for routine blood work as we stayed on top of this since he had cancer and we had it removed, we were just doing everything extra to make sure he was ok. And we were told he might have an ear infection so we gave him some drops.....ok. Well now our dog became deaf, I called and asked about it and what I got was, well that was a rare side affect. Well you could of asked us first if the chance was he could become deaf, the potential infection could have just gone away. Then we had bloodwork scheduled for a Thursday and we asked if we could have his bloodwork bumped up to Tuesday because he wasn't eating normally and they said no problem. so I brought him in on Tuesday. They the usual thorough exam, flashlight in the eyes and ears and thermometer up the butt. and I noticed they charged me an extra $80 for the exam. I am like what is this and they said it was for an emergency exam, I guess that is what they call it if you change the date to an earlier date. So I am like you need to let people know if you are going to rip them off and they said we told you. Um, no you didn't. So I ask to speak to someone who can make this right and they sent me to Andrea the office manager and she was snotty and rude right from the get go and said there is no way we are getting our $80 back. It is not about the money just about the way they tried to sneak it in and hope we didn't say anything. so then I said I wanted to speak to the owner's (Doug Keene or Solomon Wikert). No one bothered to call so I called again and was told we will let them k now again....still not a word. After the third call we get a snarky email from someone (just said from owners) telling us since they cannot seem to do anything right we were being dropped as clients. Really? After we have been taking our dog there for 15+ years and dealt with so many issues and kept giving them a chance (our fault, we should have moved on after the first couple of screw ups). We pretty much financed there whole new renovation as we spent several tens of thousands of dollars there over the years as we took him there for everything and always did bloodwork and stuff just to make sure he was doing well. There is alot more to say but I think you get the point. Not only did they treat us like crap after all of our dedication and money we had one of our families bring there dog there in an emergency situation before we realized how bad things were getting there because there dog was very ill and it turned out to be bloat which could kill an animal very quickly and our friends were told we are to busy, go somewhere else....really? Once again, all they are now is a money grab and unfortunately your pets health is a secondary concern. Just taking the time to warn anyone there are many options out there for a vet, take your time and find a good one. Ask their current customers what they think about them. My 12 year old terroir mix was panting and waking me up to go out. So I figured it was a UTI (I had a golden for 19 years.) I called Banfield where I have a Wellness Plan. 8:06am, no answer. Not the fault of the employees! I called Harris and got an appointment for 9:05. Called Banfield back because I needed her records, they were very helpful, but had no appointments today and my Wellness Plan did not cover UTI's. Iris has medication and resting. Absolutely horrible care. This place shouldn't even have the right to call itself a "pet hospital". This place will take your money for primary care/scheduled basic follow ups but when it comes down to it they could care less about you or your pet. I came home to find my dog with a metal rod completely impaled through her paw from breaking her cage. I finally was to get her free from that, I placed her in my truck, and start heading that way. With the facility still open I call them and I told them the situation but got the response that the "doctors are to busy with scheduled appointments. Just take her to an ER vet." What's the point of establishing care when once you actually need it you're denied? how to you have such lack of empathy and care? I work in healthcare and I know how crazy things can be but you make accommodations. All I can say is I will never trust this place. I'll be sure to warn others as well. I ended up driving to a Vet I have never seen before, five minutes before they closed. They took her in with open arms, stayed after hours, and addressed the situation. What do you know... Now i wish i had switched to Harris years ago for my rabbits and dogs. I will gladly make the drive from mchenry. My Labrador was expecting & Harris Pet Hospital was recommended for care related to reproduction. Prior to breeding my dog I had OFA and EIC tests/ex-rays done at HPH. Dr. Keen & Dr Harris were both very knowledgeable and helpful throughout the entire process. The support staff @ HPH is very helpful and friendly. The facility is clean and well organized. I hate to see any negative posts on this thread, based on my experiences. Nothing but POSITIVE experiences with this clinic. If there are issues, they do great job of discussing options. I will say about 15 years ago a vet who I had never seen before made a misdiagnosis on an xray. We were given options and decided to wait a few days to come back to make some decisions. When we came back, Dr. Harris personally worked with us, gave us a correct diagnosis, and I never saw that vet again. They care about your animals as if they were their own. As for the comments listed on this thread about putting down animals, unfortunately my family and my mother in law have had to put down 5 or 6 dogs in the last 20-25 years. Could not have been done more professionally. Even on a busy day, they gave us a room, gave us as much time as we wanted to be with our pet, came in and did the procedure, and allowed us as much time as we wanted to stay in the room to compose ourselves. One time, they allowed an hour for all of our family members who wanted to be present to get to the hospital and then gave us all of the time we needed. We've been a Harris client for a little over a year. Our previous Vet retired and I had always heard good things about Harris. Thanksgiving 2021, our 4 year-old Chocolate Lab got sick, literally overnight. Within a couple of days, she appeared to have no interest in living, couldn't chew her food and was blind. We called Harris on the 4th day and explained the situation. We got an appointment immediately with Dr. Faye. A brand new client, and we got an appointment immediately without hesitation! Dr. Faye examined our Lab and thought she recognized something. She excused herself and told us she had an idea of what's wrong, but wanted to run it by a few of the other vets on staff for additional input. She came back and explained it appeared like an auto-immune disease, the symptoms fit. However, she also said it could be a brain tumor - maybe treatable, maybe not. She recommended we treat the auto-immune disease first, if it works, there no need to pursue the brain tumor. She wrote the prescription, and asked that we follow-up with her in the next 3 to 4 days. Our Lab began to respond to the prescription Dr. Faye selected almost immediately. It was a long road, more than 3 months of treatment, but today we have a fully recovered, happy and energetic 5 year -old Lab. My wife and I firmly believe Dr. Faye and the staff at Harris Pet Hospital saved our Lab's life. We have followed up this past year with Dr. Faye and she is just as welcoming and caring as she was that very first day. Service and caring at this level is unfortunately rare today. 1. I had my dog put down here (my first time having to do this) and the nurses did nothing to prepare me for the actual process. Two nurses held my dog and at the last moment one told me that I should probably be the one holding my dog -seconds before she passed. This will haunt me for the rest of my life! 2. When my dog was cremated, I picked up her ashes and brought her home to to find out they gave me some other dogs ashes! Lucky for them, they found my dog's ashes in the back when I returned Bengee's ashes. 2017 3. I have another dog I wanted blood work done to check for Lyme disease and any thing else to make sure she was okay because she's been acting out of character lately. Due to COVID, the nurse comes to get my dog and I specifically told the nurse TWICE not to touch the mass on her neck - I already know it's cancer. The doctor calls me as I wait in my car to tell me the mass on my dogs neck came back positive for cancer! I was so mad because sure enough, the mass on my dogs neck is now 1/4 size larger than before and struggles to breath and eat even more now. Doctor apologized and said the mass cells spread out when she took a sample which is why her neck is huge now. I told her I KNOW! This happened the first time you poked her months ago and why I didn't want her poked again but you did and without my permission!! I was very disappointed they did not refer myself and a friend to a specialist when it was clear our animals were beyond their skill set and scope of practice. Dr roxanne hawkinson killed my mother's 4 yr old Maltese joey. The vet at harris (not Dr hawkinson ) thought it would be a good idea to give a 7lb dog a 3yr rabies vaccine Joey developed an allergic reaction to the rabies shot. His symptoms were hot spots and fever . She kept bringing him back to Harris and all they kept doing was giving him prednisone and other injections. Nothing which worked. On Friday my mother brought joey back because he seemed to be running a small fever and didn't seem like he was doing well. Dr Hawkinson gave him 2 injections and promised he would be as good as new in the morning . We'll he is as good as new but at the rainbow bridge.
