We arrived around 4 and were seated right away. That's great for a Saturday. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and loved it. Yes, it will make your eyes water, but that's ok. My husband and I both ordered a filet. I was happy to learn I could order a 6 oz even though it was not in the menu. I also ordered Oscar style. The crab and asparagus was great, but the sauce was pretty flat and runny. Brussel sprouts and Caesar salad were excellent. Brussel sprouts were crispy and cooked to perfection. We will be back. I almost to mention that our waiter was awesome. I wish I could remember his name. read more

Harry and Izzy's is a sister restaurant to St Elmo. This downtown location is quite nice, and the ambiance inside the restaurant is very neat. My wife and I entertained guests here for her birthday, and we all enjoyed ourselves and the meal. Everything was prepared nicely, we were properly served, and the meal was a success. Had lunch special with shrimp cocktail, prime rib sandwich, and salad. I love hot food, but the warning about the cocktail sauce is justified. Everyone talks about the shrimp cocktail and sauce, but I need to talk about the mini sliders. If you need a wee little meat fix, that's your play--hear me? I'm telling you, the horseradish sauce ain't too shabby either. The little bun--meh, take it or leave it. Arrived at 8:30 on a Sunday night and sat at the bar. Ordered an old fashion and St Elmo Cola. The St Elmo only requires a splash of the cola that is served with it. Had the french onion soup and it was fantastic. The onions melted in my mouth. For dinner I tried the 6oz filet, melt in your mouth delicious. I tried the cheesecake and it was similar to others. We came here for a nice dinner. We started off at the bar for pre dinner cocktails. I had an extra dirty tito's martini with bleu cheese olives (my weakness) and it was perfect. We made our way to the table and ordered the shrimp cocktail. Be warned- it has a big kick to it! As in makes your eyes water up! I would have preferred for the cocktail sauce to be on the side. My husband ordered the halibut special. It was very good. It came in what seemed like a creamy lemon sauce and the fish was tender. I ordered the filet with the gorgonzola butter on top. My wife and I went to Harry and Izzy's last night. The food quality has gone down hill over the last several years. The French onion soup used to be one of my favorites in town but now it is bland. Swanky place in downtown Indy, famous for the shrimp cocktail laden with chunky horseradish cocktail sauce. I had it as part of a pick-three lunch deal. It temporarily kicks your ass after each bite. I suppose that a temporary ass kicking is the best kind. : ) Another lunch trifecta special item, a fried green tomato sandwich with mozzarella and bacon, was delicious even though everything fell out of it as soon as you picked it up. Some kind of hearty soup I had was delicious on the side. Sadly, I ate it so fast I can't recall anything beyond the fact it was tasty! I also had a tiny salad of lettuce, apples, cranberries, walnuts, and vinegarette. Very nice flavors there as well. Service was excellent. They even sweep your crumbs. read more

Owned and operated by St. Elmo's, I was not surprised that I had just an OK experience at Harry and Izzy's. The restaurant is well decorated and in a fantastic downtown location, connected to a parking garage and mall, very easy to get to. However, other than the location, I would have to recommend other downtown restaurants over this one. First of all, it's HUGE. We were seated on the 3rd floor despite the fact that my mother in law was slow moving and the request to sit in a different section, they still chose to seat us up three flights of stairs. This also proved to be difficult on the waiters who were running up and down the stairs with our meals and drinks. Our food and service in general, was also below average, my steak overcooked and my appetizer arriving at the same time as my entree (maybe due to the stairs...they only wanted to make one trip?). I also felt like for what we got, it was definitely overpriced. Overall, I was not impressed and will not be going back unless it's for a quick drink at the bar, which is really nice, as are the decorations and atmosphere. read more

I loved Elmo's. Now, I love Harry & Izzy's. The atmosphere is great. And the food is some of the best you can get in downtown Indy. Admittedly, I am an aficionado of lighting fixtures, and Harry & Izzy's has some good ones, but that's not the only thing they have going for them. They have these gourmet Elmo's filet sliders, with a side of creamy horseradish dipping sauce that are melt-in-your-mouth good. Before a Colt's game, head to the bar here, order some sliders, sip on some beer and prepare for the task ahead. You won't be disappointed. read more

My fiancée and I had a bad experience - like, really, really bad experience - at the northside Harry and Izzy's location. I mean, horrible - nasty hostess, multiple service mistakes, and a pretty horrendous fiasco involving a missing wallet. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for the most part, considering we ate there on New Year's Eve. And good lord, the prime rib sandwich was incredible. I contacted the management and we ended up getting the meal comped so we could try again. Well, a few months later we decided to try again, at the downtown location. They definitely made up for the previous experience. The food was still excellent, for the most part. The shrimp cocktail was sinus-obliterating as usual, but the seared tuna was slightly flavorless. We shared the prime rib sandwich, which fed us both easily. Throw in a pair of cocktails each, and we left happy with a bottle of the house cocktail sauce. I like the interior of the restaurant, which feels like a place where powerful people spend lots of money on things (and not in a gaudy or over the top way). I think the steaks are largely not worth it, though - the quality of the meat just isn't there, considering how expensive the cuts are. I would absolutely recommend the downtown location over the northside location. It wasn't nearly as loud or cave-like, and the atmosphere was more romantic than just dark. It's definitely a restaurant worth going to, just avoid the steak in my opinion. read more

Ate here both nights in Indianapolis - just superb. First night I had the famous shrimp cocktail and everyone enjoyed the faces I made as the wasabi cocktail sauce liquified my mucus and sent it shooting out my eyeballs. The cucumber gimlet - light but packs a punch. Spinach salad (Indiana goat cheese) and local Sauvignon Blanc- perfection. Toasted ravioli is an app but I was still hungry...they swapped out the meat sauce for marinara for my finicky, pescatarian ass. Liquid Snickers for dessert. - Don't judge. As with St. Elmo's, I was very impressed with Harry and Izzy's. The shrimp cocktail is everything you'd expect at St. Elmo's and quite delicious (if sinus clearing ;) ). We also tried to rare ahi tuna appetizer, and it did not disappoint. The sesame crust was absolutely yummy. The wine list was quite extensive and we started with Stag's Leap "Hands of Time", a very bold Cab. The only downside was that they only had 1 bottle of it on hand. We instead ordered a Sangiovese from Midnight Cellars, and that was satisfying as well. I tried an 8oz. filet, rare, Oscar style, and it was very good. I could not stop eating it. I capped the night off with a "turtlelized" cheesecake with Maker's Mark caramel, pecans, and chocolate sauce. It was positively divine! Service was good for our table of 15 and everyone left happy. Went for lunch twice during a conference week. The Ceasar salad with salmon was great and the service was awesome! I'm not a fan of spice but the people I was with loved the shrimp cocktails. I have never had a chewier filet than the one I had a Harry & Izzy's Sunday evening. Moreover the potato pancake was nearly inedible. The crabcakes were nice and the creme brulee we had for dessert was very good. Our server was very friendly, however, I did feel rushed when she brought out my dessert and cleared my bread plate when I still had half my steak on my plate. My husband had fished his meal, but either I was eating slowly or talking too much. Regardless, I was clearly not done. I have been to Harry & Izzy's once previously for lunch. I remember the lunch experience being much better. I believe I had their "sliders". I think I would only go to Harry and Izzy's again for lunch or sandwiches or for a more laid back meal of sandwiches or pizza. For the same price range you can get a much better steaks elsewhere in Indianapolis. (Really within a 2 block radius of the same restaurant.) read more

Be forewarned before embarking on my review...I did not eat meat here. We came for a late lunch and sat at the bar. The service was excellent. I had a soda refill before the one in front of me was empty. I had a small cup of the lobster corn chowder and the roasted beet and goat cheese salad. Both were very good (but not great). Specifically, the dressing for the salad just tasted like oil. Luckily, I got it on the side and didn't use it at all. The shrimp cocktail, which I had at the airport location, was excellent but since I didn't opt for that here, I can't take it into account on the rating. Essentially, lunch at Harry and Izzy's was good but nothing stand out. I would give it another shot for dinner, though. I look forward to updating my review, hopefully for the better. read more

Harry & Izzie's is the sister to St. Elmo's and shares many of the same items on the menu. The main item is the shrimp cocktail. I have had it at St. Elmo's and it's great. We had lunch and H&I and it was the best sandwiches we've had in a long time. The burger is made from the steak meat from St Elmo's and the prime rib sandwich was delectable. Not too pricey and a very nice place to have a glass of wine and people watch. They have lunch specials every day that include a cup of soup and a 1/2 sandwhich. Here's an update for a recent lunch meeting. Service was good as always. I ordered the pastrami sandwich with fries. The rye bread was delicious and the pastrami was as good as any I've had before. They serve the spicy mustard on the side so you can put as little or as much on your sandwich as you want. The hand-cut fries were perfect. read more

Great food and lovely service during our visit. We had our young daughter with us and whoever thought to seat all the families up in the balcony was a genius. We didn't feel like we were a nuisance to other diners and we had a wonderful time. I was told that steak was a must-have in Indy, so I came here with a group of coworkers. It's owned by the same people as St Elmo, but was explained to us as being more eclectic while St Elmo is more traditional. We hadn't planned ahead, so as a walk in party, Harry and Izzy's was the shorter wait. I started with the famous shrimp cocktail- great although people make too much of the cocktail sauce! It's just a basic horseradish cocktail sauce, pretty common in NYC seafood restaurants. My steak (a 14 oz NY Strip) was excellent- cooked a perfect medium rare with a salty exterior. People in our group ordered the salmon, pasta and burgers, and a reported their food was excellent as well. read more

5-star service 4.5-star food Traveled to Indianapolis for business and stayed at a nearby hotel. I only knew of this restaurant from seeing its airport version at the new IND terminal. They occupy a big corner downtown, with a parking garage directly behind, and valet parking. I dined here three times during my stay as I didn't want to risk being disappointed elsewhere (not an adventure trip this visit). Each time I sat at the tables surrounding the bar. There was no wait and I received immediate attention. The bus boy was quick with a water as soon as I sat down. The waitress was quick with menus and a drink order. This is the complete opposite of most bar seating I've encountered at other places where you tend to be ignored for the drunks sitting at the counter demanding TV channels be changed to follow some loser team. Instead, here they had a great sense of urgency and plenty of servers hovering around the bar. The menu offers steakhouse fare. Big sides, big pasta dishes and more normal sandwiches. In my visits I had steak burger, fettuccine and a shrimp dish. All were outstanding. I liked their fresh cut fries, and their bread. The bread was tremendous. Pre-buttered and heated to perfection. Terribly addictive, please, limit yourself to only one basket. Shame of it is, each visit after eating, I was too full to indulge on dessert. I really wanted to try dessert, but I didn't have anyone to share the taste. I hope patrons truly realize how rare service like Harry and Izzy's has become. Unless I went on a fluke day with four great servers in three separate visits, great service seems to be endemic at this establishment. read more

I started off my meal with the shrimp cocktail because you just have to have St. Elmo's sauce at least once in your life. Well, once was plenty for me! How do people do it?! It was WAY too horseradish-y for me (and most people in my group). I know, I'm probably offending people all over Indiana, but I just can't! On a different note, the meal was amazing (fettuccine Alfredo) with kale, edamame, and quinoa salad. The salad was delicious, but I did expect it to be warm. I'm in Indi traveling for work this week and after a long day we thought we would treat ourself to a nice steak dinner. This place has been around for a long time and they know what they are doing. They have many different options and have something for everyone, so if you don't eat steak you could still definitely find something here for you. Me and my coworker split the romaine hearts salad and it was very good (definitely recommend). Their salads are very big so you can definitely split it and still get a large portion. We each got the filet and were not disappointed. The filet was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. You get a side included so we both chose mashed potatoes. This was a huge portion and would be two servings at most restaurants. They were delicious though and worth every bite. All in all a solid choice where you probably can't go wrong. It was crowded and I think a local favorite. Definitely recommend! read more

This place is amazing. Everything I ate was to die for. I started with the fried green tomatoes. They were cooked perfectly. Lightly breaded with that great tart green tomato taste. The sauce have a little bit of a kick to it so beware if you have the sauce. I then had the Gorgonzola mini fillets they're typically an appetizer but I got them as a meal. They were cooked to perfection and absolutely amazing. I then had the brownie sundae. It was one of the most decadent desserts I've eaten in a long time. The ambience was great. We had dinner here after a long day at the convention center. We asked to sit in a quieter area, and they found us a nice table in a side room. Service was attentive and professional. Our waiter recommended the aged ribeye steak--"best steak ever." I didn't think I wanted an entire 18-ounce boneless, so he suggested we split it. We did--certainly one of the "best steaks ever"--cooked perfectly medium rare and it was plenty for both of us. Of course, we also had the signature shrimp cocktail (horseradish) and the iceberg lettuce wedge with crumbled bacon (very pancetta-like). OK, iceberg wedge isn't the most exciting salad, but it's great when done well, which this was. My only disappointment was a wine list that had a very limited choice of medium-priced wines by the bottle, so wine selection took a while. A small complaint, so I would rate H & I 4.5 stars if possible. read more

Hostess were nice, and the anniversary card we received was thoughtful. My boyfriend and I have never been here so we wanted to try something new for our anniversary. The building was nice, its a beautiful setting. The service isn't as beautiful. I forgot our waitresses name or I would include it, she only visited our table about 4 times during the 2 hours we were there. We requested bread and never received it, no big deal. After our food came out I asked the Food Runner if he could grab some. "Yes of course!". He passed us another 5 times, even making eye contact with me. no bread. ok, thats fine. When I received the pasta, it was obviously sitting for awhile. It was room temp and the taste wasn't what I was expecting at all. I didn't want to ruin my anniversary dinner, so I just ate what I could stomach. My boyfriend then showed me his pizza was literally raw in the middle. He was planning on telling the waitress but she was busy. She would drop drinks off without a word, felt pretty awkward already. We stopped eating and decided we would try a dessert. The dessert was great. It was a hectic Tuesday night, so I can't even imagine the weekends. I think we just came in on a bad night. Might try it again in the future, hopefully getting a different server. read more

Was introduced to Harry & Izzy's in a recent trip to Indy. We had reservations and were taken to a back room and ended up being the only folks there. Not sure if that was intentional or if it was because the restaurant wasn't too busy. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and great at keeping our drinks refilled & our bread basket full. I had the ribeye and it was a bit large (14-ounces) and I wasn't able to finish it. I did, however, make room for the amazing dessert. It was a brownie with ice cream and fudge. I am normally not a sweet tooth but we all had to try it. Great place to eat if you want to splurge and have a nice meal. read more
