It had been awhile since I visited any of the multiple restaurants within this organization. Last night H&I on 82nd street was a huge disappointment. The $63 ribeye steak was horrible! I paid extra to have it served Izzy style. What a mistake, maybe it would have been better had I not. It was basically swimming in a red sauce of some kind that did not taste anything like it was described on the menu. The green beans served with it were good and properly cooked. The shrimp cocktail was ok. (Not the nice over sized perfectly cooked shrimp that I had come to know and love.) And finally, the biggest disappointment was having to keep an eye out for the wait staff to make sure they were not removing unfinished drinks and food prior to our finishing. With nine of us at the table engaged in conversation it became frustrating paying more attention to the staff than to each other. Sorry, not sure what has happened to this once amazing special dining organization. Does anyone know if there is new ownership in recent years? We spent lots and lots of money for food and service that we would have been better off going to one of the big steak house chains for instead. What a disappointment! read more

Our first time at this restaurant was nothing short of impressive. The ambience and the menu offer an upscale experience, without being stuffy. The seating was comfy. The lighting was relaxing. And the food was prepared to perfection. However...the most notable part of the experience, was the service. Upon informing the server of my allergies, she and the manager AND the chef, all worked together to prepare for me a one-of-a-kind meal. The attention to detail for my protection was above and beyond what I have EVER experienced in any other restaurant. Definitely worth the generous tip we left. Had a great time here for NYE. We sat at the bar and watched Ohio State lose to Miami. Up first I had a $16 Espresso Martini. It was made how I like it and would recommend it. Also tried a $15 lemon drop $16 Old Fashioned, and a martini. All of the drinks were very good and made correctly. I started with a $12 French Onion Soup. Very good. Then, I had a $26 Prime Rib sandwich. I enjoyed it a lot. The place cleared out as we got closer to midnight. Here for St Nick's lodge! This event feels up fast!! It's cute and festive for sure! The experiences just ok. I wasn't wow'd at all. The drinks was just ok and I didn't even finish mine. I tried the Grandma got hangover by a reindeer which I basically boozy hot chocolate. It was mid. Not a fan. My friend ordered the ski lift and was disappointed and ended up sending it back. Overall it's cute but missed the mark on drinks. I loved that they had nice Sherpa blankets on each chair!! It wasn't too cold at all! It's a cute spot to go take some instagram worthy photos! Visited Harry & Izzy's during Devour Indy week. It's a great value. For $58 you can get shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, and a 6 ounce fillet with mashed potatoes If you go on a Monday through Wednesday, you get an additional $10 off your meal. The service was wonderful. Very attentive and our food arrived quickly. It was hot and fresh. The steaks were served to perfection. The dress is upscale casual. You will see men dressed from suits, to business casual, to jeans with a nice pullover. The restaurant is warm and inviting. St. Elmo's, its downtown Sister restaurant, has a dark, moody, old world environment. Harry & Izzys, however, is light and bright. A definite contrast in atmosphere between the two. We love coming here during Devour week. We recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning again. read more

Had such a great experience at Harry & Izzy's! I ordered the pizza and wanted to make a few changes -- and they didn't just accommodate, they were so kind about it. The manager came by personally and made sure everything was exactly how I wanted it, which honestly meant a lot. My daughter loved celebrating her birthday last year at this location that she requested to go again this year. From the moment we walked inside, all of the staff were friendly and made us feel welcomed. We went at 6pm and it wasn't busy yet. The lighting and decorations really set a cozy and inviting mood. Our server Sha'Quia was amazing! She was attentive and so sweet. She even noticed when the potatoes that came out were not the right kind and quickly corrected it. My husband and I had an impromptu date night this past Saturday. So, after attending an event in Downtown Indianapolis, we were looking for a place to dine, but we didn't have reservations, and the wait times were over 30 minutes. I checked online and saw that we could get in at this location. I put in a reservation and requested a booth. The weather was mild and slightly rainy, but I noticed the covered patio area and decided that it would be a nice idea to dine outside. While checking in, the hostess greeted us warmly and I noticed someone who appeared to be management on the telephone. I asked about changing our preference to the patio and the hostess assured us that they could make that happen. A ticket printed and the hostess grabbed it, at which time the manager promptly snatched it out of her hand as another ticket printed. I thought that was very rude and unnecessary, but the hostess didn't miss a beat. She lead us to our table and chatted with us on the way, all while maintaining her smile. We were sat and Paul, our server, greeted us and offered us a wine and cocktail menu. We opted for a bottle of Moscato and ordered the famous (or infamous) St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail to share as an appetizer. I swear, the horseradish gets spicier every time. I could only eat one! Then, I ordered the Prime Beef Meatballs as my entree and my husband ordered the Penne Alfredo with lobster meat and sauteed shrimp. The first plate of pasta came out "loosey goosey", like the sauce was super soupy. When Paul came to check on us, we inquired about that and he didn't seem sure as to whether or not that was how it should be served. He went and made the manager aware. The same manager that I'd seen snatching the ticket from the hostess came over and apologized, stating that she'd love to have that remade for him. She somewhat redeemed herself, although I hope that she apologized to the hostess. She also offered him a soup or salad while he waited, which he declined. A few minutes later, a new plate of pasta was presented with a thicker, cheesier sauce. It was garnished with additional parmesan cheese, herbs and lemon zest, something that the first plate had include, but went unnoticed due to the watery river of sauce stealing the show. My meatballs were an appetizer, meant to be shared...and they are massive. I only ate one there and had one each for the next two days as well. We ordered cheesecake to go. We love Harry & Izzy's and normally frequent the downtown location, but this one is much closer to our home, and we will likely return soon. read more

My party of four met here for a little annual holiday meet up. This is our second time meeting at H&I. We like the food, service, ambiance, and quality of food. We met on a Sunday after Christmas. The restaurant was still nicely decorated for the holidays. This visit I tried the Legacy lunch combo. It comes with sliders or salmon, soup du jour or salad, and fries or chips. I opted for the chili, salmon filet, and fries. I was warned the chili had a spicy kick, and I was not disappointed. The salmon was seasoned well. Obviously the shrimp cocktail was great, but the steak sliders and pizza were very good as well. I had a couple of beers, and an Old Fashioned and all were very good. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here for a happy hour event and it did not disappoint. We were seated in the backroom and service was great. Foodwise, you have to try the World Famous St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail. It's an Indy thing and apparently it's just pure horseradish. It did make my eyes water when I had a shrimp. The filet was cooked nice and medium rare with some green beans and mashed potatoes as garnish. The creme brulee had a nice crystallized shell with a creamy sweet interior. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, the restaurant was great. Total damage was around $170 for the filet mignon, shrimp cocktail, glass of wine, soup, and a creme brulee. I had initial plans of ordering from devour until salads came out and I just couldn't pass it up. I ordered the burrata and brussel salad adding sirloin. This is where the decline in stars comes. Two of us who got salads (one without any add ons) were the last to get our meals. When I say last, I literally mean everyone had finished their meals. Someone delivering meals apologized for the hold up stating the toaster wasn't working. We had salads. Those who had sandwiches were already finished with their meals at this time. At that point one patron was told that they took 20% off her bill due to the wait. Actually, the 20% was the added gratuity due to the guaranteed tip. Food was great. Overall our service was good, as the servers can't control the speed of the kitchen, but the way the lingering meals were handled was a bit disappointing for a higher end restaurant. read more

All accommodations was complied with an Anniversary card with the staff signatures. That was the coolest thing ever. I wish I knew the name of the waitress I had because she was very attentive and on point with recommendations. I ended up getting the New York strip steak while my wife got the ribeye. The famous shrimp cocktail was served buried in the sauce no shrimp showed. One was not deveined. The seafood dish was terrible. The calamari, shrimp and clams were all over cooked. Calamari like rubber bands. Sauce and noodles made it ok. My blue sapphire martini with blue cheese stuffed olives was a mess. The olives were the size of grapes and the blue cheese was smeared all over the olives very unappetizing. Service only ok. We had to spell Ceviche for him, and that was on the special card. I heard the waitress who had tables around us asking and offering desserts for celebrations, so I figured ours probably saw that on our reservation since she never asked. Fast forward, we started out with the calamari. Mediocre but nothing special. The bread we got while we were waiting for our steaks would have been good enough for me; it was very good! I got the ribeye filet and my husband got the ribeye. We were both very disappointed. My filet was cooked to temperature as asked, but it had 0 flavor. It tasted like a Kroger steak that I didn't season. I could taste the occasional char flavor but that was it. My husband's steak was unevenly cooked; part of it cooked correctly, part not but also 0 flavor. For the sides we got Brussel sprouts and the macaroni and cheese. The Brussels were very firm (underdone) and tasted old. The sauce was very vinegar forward and didn't have a pleasant flavor profile. Wouldn't recommend. The macaroni and cheese was the very best part of the meal. cheesy and rich. Yum. Ultimately, we weren't offered a dessert for our anniversary, but asking for it felt wrong. Then when the waitress took our food to box it she stuck her thumb into the macaroni dish instead of grabbing the plate underneath. After receiving the check it was about $175 and neither of us even had a drink. Woof. I don't feel my food was anywhere close to being worth that much. I really wanted to love it and be wowed, but it was lackluster. There are other places around the area at comparable prices that I'd choose to go before visiting again. read more

I was looking forward to enjoying my birthday here recently. My family and I gathered for the discounted three-course weekend menu. I made my reservation, confirmed that the menu still existed, then also sent screenshots to the family of what menu would also be available to choose from directly from this location's website. We were seated promptly but not waited on promptly. While our waitress was kind, our entire night was extremely slow (3.5 hour dinner - yikes - I would have never gone here had I known this). Just getting ice water took over 30 minutes. I asked for the menu I confirmed existed when I previously called in and was told it no longer existed but she would ask the manager since she was told it was my birthday. One manager said no, she asked another, they said yes (which took another 30 minutes). We placed our orders and very nicely said not to rush her or anyone but we had plans to get to after and needed to be out in 90 minutes. She said that was no problem, we'd be out well before then. After ordering, a middle aged women came out and said she was a manager. She accused me of being a liar regarding the menu. I told her when I called and also showed her the website. She accused me of not pulling up the real website then took my cell phone to try to see where I was lying. She made me go step by step over where I found this and kept making nasty comments about me trying to work one over on the restaurant, manipulating the web address (what?!). This encounter lasted about 5 minutes or so and I was absolutely mortified in front of my family. She just stood over me at this table and went on and on and on. It was disgusting. Our food took forever. Honestly everything did. Our nice, older waitress was probably doing her best, she said she was exhausted, and clearly needed help/to not be spread thin. We got our salads but it took another hour for our dinner entrees, which we had to track our waitress down to check on. The manager brought everything out and was still in a very bad mood because we were treated like we should not be there. We ate what we could but the food was so, SO bad. For example, steaks were either raw or well done when we ordered medium rare. Despite trying to eat quickly, we still couldn't get out when we needed to for our next plans. Again we didn't want to rush anyone but never expected to be there more than 2.5 hours with a reservation on an afternoon! Our waitress never checked on our food, never refilled our drinks during entrees, and after asking for our check, she took another 30 minutes to bring it. Upon returning, we were made aware that I should not expect anything free for my birthday (I didn't ask for, expect, or even want anything but yes, you do give free dessert, which is why we heard the table nearby get a birthday dessert and I've been here for birthdays before - always a free dessert). I will never come here again and honestly, this "establishment" should be ashamed for how incredibly downhill they have gone. I wasn't in the mood to cook and we had a gift card to use up. The food and service were really great. Salads were huge. Toasted ravioli portion was a bit small, 3 ravioli. Salmon was cooked well on my salad. Our server did an excellent job keeping tea filled. We even ran into a wonderful server that worked for another company years ago. She was always great. Only complaint or criticism would be the lights just inside hanging above the entry were covered in spider webs and a spider living his best life. Someone may want to take a swiffer duster to those and and relocate him outside. I know when you work in a building you don't notice things other people will like burnt out bulbs and spider webs. First thing I'll say is this place is not cheap, but kinda worth it. This was another recommendation from a coworker I was visiting in Indianapolis. He said we had to try the shrimp cocktail. Apparently everyone else heard the same recommendation because almost every table had it. There is nothing special about the shrimp, but the cocktail part if super good. You'll swear it is 4 parts wasabi to one part cocktail sauce. It's very very good. Definitely try it. I don't remember the name, but I got the steak covered in Pepper. When you see it, it looks like too much pepper, but honest it isn't. The flavor was superb. I sat at the bar and our bartender / waitress was Jenn. She was awesome. Funny, smart, witty, helpful, attentive. I was impressed with her honesty about the menu as well as her knowledge of the menus ( food and drink ).
