Chicken Cutlet
Dan D.

This was genuinely one of the worst chicken cutlets I've ever had. Super stringy texture, and you couldn't even take one bite without pulling the entire chicken out of the sandwich

Thanksgiving sub

I got the half thanksgiving sandwich. That sandwich was filled with meat and toppings.(about an 8inch sub) Taste wise, it was really good. The turkey and cranberry sauce paired very well together. It's a great sub shop overall and would come back again. 7.4/10

Where's the meat? If I wanted to be disappointed I might else well of gone to subway.

I don't really understand the great reviews of this place. I refused to place an online order because they charge you $5.00 to do so. (That's not for delivery, just online order and you go pick it up). I asked the guy about it at the register he had no clue. Then they charge extra for cheese, I've never seen a grinder place charge extra for cheese, how does that not come with the grinder? When I walked in to order the place looked like it hasn't been cleaned in forever. Very dirty looking, there was a big hole in the back wall with exposed insulation. The menu boards were all taken down and sitting in top of the soda machine. The grinder itself was okay, kinda thrown together, the tomatoes were cut really thick, the ham was cheap, and there was barley any meat on the Italian combo. It definitely doesn't live up to the name "GIANT" grinder.

I have eaten in Niantic which was my first test of this little deli. Today we tried the new Westbrook location 21 essex road off the Westbrook green before the post road. For a local go to that is above subway by far not corporate like jersey mikes makes all ingredients in house like the very rare very tasty roast beef for the area and location a great find. Not many delis in this area that don't disappoint. As always what I will say is will for the love of god somebody invest in a good grinder roll!! Bread makes the sandwich ! Ny / NJ / Bronx bakery something with a crunchy tasty shell and soft inside . Outside that this place is a nice spot to eat in or outside .

Half philly. This picture does not do justice, fantastic sandwich!

This is a great shop! Good vibes from the staff when you come through the door and excellent sando's! Homemade and fresh sliced. You will get your money's worthy and then some, i got the "half" and it was enormous. Chips are awesome too, not your mainline lays and doritos . If i lived in the area i would be eating here multiple times a week.

Have tried both the Niantic and Westbrook locations. Both were good. The small grinders are like a large at most places.

It is an unassuming building on the side of the road, in the middle of a neighborhood. It is about 10 minutes south of Mohegan Sun. Donatello's With A Twist definitely offers a twist! They serve a wide variety of options: American breakfast, sandwiches & burgers, Puerto Rican dishes & Italian fare. Hubby enjoyed playing the free Pac-Man video game as we waited for our food. There are a couple of seats inside & a little garden outside. Most people took their food to go. There are 7 - YAAASSSSS SEVEN! - mofongo options on the menu. Ummm... yes, please! For the uninitiated, mofongo is a dish from Puerto Rico featuring plantains as its main ingredient. They are picked green, cut into pieces & typically fried, then pounded in a wooden pilón (mortar and pestle) with a variety of spices, broth & some type of cooking oil . If you are a fan of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, you know that he is a mofongo freak. I've had mofongo before & definitely enjoy it, hubby was new to the experience. We selected the Shrimp Creole Mofongo & it was spectacular. We heard the pounding of the plantains in the back as we waited for our food so I knew it was being made special for us. The mound of mofongo was flavorful, the shrimp were large & perfectly cooked in a spicy red sauce with a little salad on the side to cool things off. We also ordered the Chicharron De Pollo with Tostones. I thought it was going to be a harder fry on the chicken but the dark meat was yummi. The tostones were perfectly fried & the highlight of this dish. Hubby can't pass up a steak sandwich so he ordered a large Boricua Steak Bomb. HOLY COW! The sandwich was ginormous!!! A ton of steak with a good amount of melty cheese topped with a spicy sauce. Hubby loved it! I saw a guy order a slab of meat & I went up afterwards to inquire what it was. A perfectly fried chicharrón - fried pork belly. It was a good combination of meat, fat & crunchy bits. As a German, I was introduced to grilled schweinebauch as a kid. It is not everyone's cup of tea because of the fat content & idea of eating pig's stomach but I love it. I should have bought another one to take with me for later! Donatello's makes a number of fresh juices & we ordered the passionfruit which was a refreshingly sweet & sour combo. They also sell desserts but we were so full that I didn't even look to see what was offered. If you are in the area, I would recommend stopping by Donatello's With A Twist to try some of their special dishes. It is a celebration of flavor & culture!

Which brings me to my newly crowned favorite sandwich - Tongue On Rye; ask for the tip slices very lean. I even got a dependable guarantee from our server she'd provide an unforgettable tongue sandwich. In a comedic mood, I asked our server to not give me any lip! She doubled over giggling and said thank you for your honesty and THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I've been asked just Tongue with "No Lip." Despite the comedy and light hearted conversation the table for two was perfect Harry & Sally style! Watching the action, enjoying the lean tongue on rye with mustard an unforgettable delight.

The still tastes good, with some exceptions. The frier oil seemed burnt, so the pickle chips we had just had that little bit of carbon taste on them. The pickle chips batter was very thick, and the mayo was the only respite. The sandwich, still tasty, seemed much smaller than normal, the meat still had good flavor, but the portion was lighter in comparison. The prices are also a bit high. The sandwich coming out to about 15 bucks. The bargain is very much gone now, and the portion is okay for a sandwich but pricy because of this shrinkage. Not shown are the overcooked onion rings. We returned those and the server promptly removed them from the bill. So really good customer service. I opted for a brownie for dessert, and the brownie was a disappointment. Too sugary, no flavor, gummy, and disappointingly small and thin. A detractor for sure. As a deli, it feels like it's on the decline. I know things are pricier now, but what you pay vs what you get doesn't match up. I'm hoping they pivot from this path, but right now it's no longer my go-to. It's still tasty, just pricy

We loved all the photos on the wall showing how this restaurant has been part of the community for some years. Our food was overall good, but not amazing. I got an eggs benedict special and added spinach at the server's recommendation; I was surprised that it came on a bed of spinach, rather than cooked and on top of the English muffin with the other ingredients. Everything was cooked well, and I enjoyed my meal. My husband got an omelet and the home fries, which were fine. We also got some of the house-made banana bread with blueberries but were disappointed that it lacked structure and was rather soggy. We toasted it up at home in slices, and that was much better. My husband said the coffee was "fine--regular diner coffee." We were frankly shocked by the prices. We are used to California restaurant prices, which are quite high--but our breakfast here was even more expensive than that. Not sure what accounts for this, as there are other breakfast places in the area that aren't quite this dear.
