I was excited to try Hartford Giant Grinder while visiting Niantic after seeing their giant sandwiches and good reviews on Instagram. The guy behind the counter must've been having a tough day, he continually cut us off while trying to order and he muttered "I don't know why everyone has such an attitude". Things got a little heated and we exchanged "pleasantries" after I told him to cancel my sandwich. I was told that he said that "I could go F**k myself" after I left the store and then told the other people waiting to place an order that he didn't have anymore bread....when he definitely did. Again, maybe he was having a bad day or the heat was getting to him but this kind of attitude and service a little shocking. Even though I told him to cancel my order he still made the Deluxe Italian combo sandwich. After the exchange in the restaurant I really wanted to hate the sandwich but I have to admit it was very good. 4 stars for the sandwich, minus 2 stars for the attitude. Love the turkey sandwich on a hard roll. There a lot of ways to customize any sandwich with a variety of cheeses, veggies and condiments. Everything is always fresh. Good assortment of chips and drinks, including CT based companies. It gets busy sometimes but you never have to wait an inordinately long time. Came here on a quick lunch break. I ordered a deluxe Italian combo half grinder. It came with ham, Genoa, and , capicola. I got it loaded with all the veggies on it. Grinder was good! It was huge! I don't really understand the great reviews of this place. I refused to place an online order because they charge you $5.00 to do so. (That's not for delivery, just online order and you go pick it up). I asked the guy about it at the register he had no clue. Then they charge extra for cheese, I've never seen a grinder place charge extra for cheese, how does that not come with the grinder? When I walked in to order the place looked like it hasn't been cleaned in forever. Very dirty looking, there was a big hole in the back wall with exposed insulation. The menu boards were all taken down and sitting in top of the soda machine. The grinder itself was okay, kinda thrown together, the tomatoes were cut really thick, the ham was cheap, and there was barley any meat on the Italian combo. I have eaten in Niantic which was my first test of this little deli. Today we tried the new Westbrook location 21 essex road off the Westbrook green before the post road. For a local go to that is above subway by far not corporate like jersey mikes makes all ingredients in house like the very rare very tasty roast beef for the area and location a great find. Not many delis in this area that don't disappoint. As always what I will say is will for the love of god somebody invest in a good grinder roll!! Bread makes the sandwich ! We wanted to try this place as another sandwich option in town. Their portions are huge and pricing was reasonable. The service was very quick as well. I was slightly disappointed with my sandwich as it was very bland even though i had a lot of seasonings and toppings, but I think it was the turkey. My husband had the same issue, his also tasted very bland, he had other meats but it was slightly better, leading us to believe it was the turkey. A traffic logjam forced us to pull around this stretch of RT95, and an unexpected stop at the Hartford Giant Grinder. So glad it did, managed to fit in a very fine sandwich. The sandwich shop is around the corner of the storefront, tucked in a bit and facing an alley to the side. Its worth seeking out. Its not in Hartford, not even close, but they got the Giant part right, the sandwiches are massive. A small comes on soft, fluffy 8" grinder roll. The large is 16", and loaded to the gills. House specialties include fresh sliced Roast Beef, Meatballs, and Eggplant Parmigiana, but for me a grinder is Italian (capital I) and the Deluxe Italian here includes Capicola, a whole bunch of it. I couldn't manage to finish 1/2 and brought the rest home. Lucky me, I got to enjoy it twice. Good Grinder Guys A+. This place is a staple at our house. I should preface this by saying my husband grew up on Hamilton Market. At one point we even did a comparison taste test and got one capicola grinder from Hamilton and one from HGG. HGG was made better in our opinion. We have yet to have a capicola grinder compare. I will say if you don't call ahead to order you may be waiting for a bit and depending on the day make sure you call early because they may run out of things and close up shop early that's the only reason for the 4 stars but overall the food is delish and the owners are so very friendly! read more

Most disappointing "italian combo" on a hard roll I've had in some time. And it was $10 to boot. I mistakenly ordered the wrong thing. Evidently you have to say "deluxe" to get just about what everyplace else ever considers an Italian combo -- so my fault... For a "giant grinder" there was essentially no meat on this thing. The hard roll was thick and bready, the tomatoes were thickly cut as well as the pickles--which were bread & butter, by the way. Gross. Personal preference, but again, when you're expecting dill, it was jarring. And it was all dripping wet. As soon as I took the first bite the entire sandwich completely fell apart in my hands. The most annoying thing, apart from paying $9 for a hard roll sandwich, is having to pay extra for cheese!! A slice of cheese. Cheese. A standard option on a sandwich. I've enjoyed many grinders from here, it's a tie for me favorite between roast turkey with bacon and Italian special. Great bread, which is essential to a solid grinder and the roasted turkey is made in house. A half size fills me up for a day of fishing, the full size could probably feed a small family! Lunch gets busy, so call your order in early. At some point late in the afternoon on weekends they run out of bread and will close early, so give a call. read more
