Unassuming little sandwich shop with a big personality. The owner is kind, discerning and multitasks like lightning. Here's the result. In a word, go. And go with an appetite. These sammies are huge.

Top Notch Grinders. Cannot beat the value for the amount of Meat used and the attention to detail on the construction of each Grinder they make. It's like an Old School Place to get a large tasty Grinder like it used to be 25 years ago!. Smiley is very friendly and you will get a great Grinder every time!

First time there couldn't believe how much meat is in his sandwich. A half of sub could probably feed four people can't wait to go back.

Nothing beats it. I would take a picture of my sandwich I just had today to give a presentation but it's been devoured. If you haven't given this place a shot, do yourself a favor and check it out. Business doesn't get any more local than it does at Walt's. Bravo! P.S. every sandwich comes with a free pickle

The meats, seafood, deli items including salads, sandwiches, soups, prepared lunches, dinners, as well as bakery items, produce, and prepared frozen items are ALL HOMEMADE & DELISH! They also stock a fantastic selection of well known dry, refrigerated and frozen groceries! 2) The prices are extremely reasonable. 3) The staff are genuine, kind, helpful & efficient. 4) ITS NOT a hoity-toity exorbitant boutique grocer. It's an authentic old school neighborhood establishment that provides reliable, consistent, excellent quality groceries. AN OLD SAYBROOK LOCAL INSTITUTION that has stood the test of time. I am completely HOOKED on this place! I have had their grinders which are fantastic. Their croissants, cookies, soups, prepared dinners which are also fabulous! The portions are generous & the prices are very reasonable! Walt's is TRULY is a GEM in the local COMMUNITY! We are INCREDIBLY FORTUNATE to have this fantastic independent grocer in the area! We all had egg sandwiches to go (two wraps and two traditional) and enjoyed them. Iced tea was good. Service was very good. The store has a lot of interesting items, especially if you like nostalgic candies. Decor was very charming. There's a deli case that might be great for lunch and I didn't read the menus on the walls. Sandwiches are made fresh and they appear to either have a bakery or a relationship with one as there were quite a few pastries that looked creative and fresh. It takes some time to make the food so my recommendation is to call them ahead of time so it is ready when you arrive. There are a few tables inside and a few more outside so there is seating. If you read my reviews you might know that the highest I give on a first visit is 4 stars. If I go back and the place is excellent again I raise it to 5. This is so that a place that is consistently the best of the best (vs a one time great experience) gets 5 stars over a place that just does it once. Olive Oyl's would definitely be eligible for a 5th star and I'm virtually certain to give it to them on the next visit. It was such a perfect combination of choices, quality, service and ambiance! We've been coming to Essex for so many years and always passed this place by for no reason in particular. Now I think we will visit every time we're in town!
