I try to be fair and report the good with the bad. The annoying: 1) No restroom for paying customers. 2) My sister-in-law is a type 1 diabetic so she was asking about the sugar content. The guy behind the register was mumbling under his breath about 'no sugar content in the food' and said 'they ask a lot of questions.' He is lucky he doesn't have to ask those kind of questions and shouldn't be mumbling under his breath when paying customers are asking questions so they do not cause a spike in blood sugar that could cause a hospital visit. 3) Only one picnic table to sit outside. Now the good: 1) The lady who took our order was really nice, she asked how we wanted the sandwich prepped and answered our questions. 2) They offer an extra meat option for those who like a more filling sandwich. 3) The small sandwiches are rather large. So, if you have a TMJ problem, you may want to consider a bun instead of a grinder bread. 4) the cannolis are delicious, even better than the cannolis my spouse bought at Mike's Pastry in Boston (we waited 30+ minutes in line. My family has been coming here for atleast 4 generations. Over 40 years. David is amazing. I love their cannolis and brownies. The pricing is reasonable and the portions are great too. I love their Tuna on soft bread. Family owned and super kind. Any time I'm in the area, I make sure to stop here. There's a picnic bench out front if you want to sit and eat. Definitely a cozy sub and pizza shop. The workers are just as friendly. There's plenty of parking. read more

Just spent almost 30 on 2 steak grinders that were absolutely horrid. Within 5 mins of being home the bread was soggy and falling apart. Barely any meat and an overload of unflavored veggies...meat was extra bland. I got a phenomenal steak and cheese the FIRST visit. Figured id try it again (bc the 2nd visit was also horrid, same grinder) but never again. Usually they are on point but def dont recommend steak and cheese grinders read more

We were just passing through and had read about this family bakery. It is a small facility & so doesn't have a big selection of baked goods. We did get a large chocolate chip cookie-nice & buttery flavored & not dry & floury like many bakery cookies. We also got great looking raspberry twist & apple turnover in puff pastry. But what I want to talk about are the sandwiches. Both served on great artisanal bread. I got soupy which had a kick and was beautifully seasoned-perfect amount of red pepper & black peppercorns. It tastes fantastic & looks way better than most old cuts- artisanal vs standard commercial ? The lady made it special with extras like pickle & green pepper. The point is that all sandwich components were perfectly proportioned & veggies were super fresh. I was full before I finished half of my large sandwich, so I know what is for dinner. Though it's dead of winter tomatoes were much better than expected. My partner loved his hot meatball sub: said meat balls had great flavor + texture. Said there was just the right amount of tasty tomato sauce & melted cheese, & thought bread was perfect for sandwich.. service was accounting, polite, & quick. Just fyi, big drink and salty snack selection. One reviewer mentioned that there are no public restrooms. There is no place to sit inside, but there is a large picnic table outside that we shared with some friendly locals. I've been getting grinders there since I was a teen and am now 80. They are the best Italian grinders anywhere I've ever been and I've lived in 15 states but am from Baltic Ct. We always stop as often as we can when in the area. We get several to go but end up eating them before we even get off the ground at the airport! The best. read more

Not as good! The only thing I've noticed and asked about was there using a different Tuna fish brand!!! The girl said no, same as always! This one it so much a cheaper tasting brand! It tasted VERY fishy and not like the clean tuna they used to serve. We won't be back, especially for the dry tuna, or the tuna with mayo. Also the sauce was alittle bitter tastying, not like it used to be. Always went to Voc's but alittle disappointing the last few times I was there. Sorry but just saying the truth. This place is gross, I would only buy rolls from here if anything. They don't make any of the bread in-house. The deli section- veggies for sandwiches always looked gross since 2007, either discolored or the wooden encasement looked mildewy. The owner has Napoleon syndrome. He felt good about pulling out over a stack from his pocket to hand me 3 singles. I could tell it meant a lot to him because of his eye contact and fake rich man smirk. yall can keep ur brooklyn bread. u wouldnt survive in a real city with actual culture and good food. Been back every so often for sandwiches and pizza, big skimping on ingredients; even with "extra meat" Last batch of sandwiches were more iceberg lettuce than anything, bread still ok though. I have been coming here for years and the grinders are always amazing. You can't beat freshly made bread and the special New England style shredded iceberg lettuce. Today the lettuce was a brown looking which was sad but grinder still tasted fine. I'm wondering if they used the lettuce from yesterday because I came in early.. around 10:30. Pizza slices are 99 cents still ... grinders are between 4 and 6 dollars. Very reasonably priced. Don't be deterred by the unassuming appearance. Yes the word bakery is in the name but apparently grinders and pizza make up a lot of their business. They bake their own Italian bread and Italian cookies but other than that I didn't see many other baked goods behind the counter. I didn't see any cakes or any Italian pastries (although a sign said cannoli's were available in back). But that's OK because they're located in Taftsville and not the center of Manhattan. They're just not a full service bakery. I purchased a sausage and peppers grinder and it was terrific. I liked the tomato sauce and the fact that the grinder was reasonably priced. I also purchased a plain loaf of Italian bread and it was OK, just OK. It was a little stale but that's probably my fault for visiting late in the day. I bet the bread tastes much fresher in the morning. The style of bread reminded me a lot of Apicella's Italian bread in New Haven. I liked the look and feel of the place. It's got a lot of character and reminded me of many old school Italian places when growing up. Take-out only. read more

The bread at Vocatura's is pretty magical. It is perfect for grinders (hoagies, subs, sandwiches, whatever you wanna call it). I walked it today at lunch time (12:30ish), everyone had masks and were social distancing properly. They asked me what I wanted, made it in 30 seconds tops, cashed me out and I was back in my car in less than 2 minutes. The service was impeccably fast and friendly. The (ham) grinder I got was amazing, in particular the tomatoes they use are fantastic. It's almost like the marinade them in something and make them the juiciest, most flavorful tomatoes around. Never had a bad experience here, or better yet, anything less than awesome grinders. Order any grinder and you can't go wrong, but I usually order the turkey w/ bacon. You get literally two handfuls of bacon on the grinder, so f***ing good I could eat one every day. The crew that works there probably think I'm crazy because that's all I ever order, but when you find something you like you gotta stick with it. I drive 15 minutes each way on my half hour lunch break to get food from here, no joke.. They also have fresh bread, cookies, the pizza is outstanding and underpriced in my opinion, and have cold cuts and cheeses, olives, etc. to purchase as well. Call in your order and it's ready on time always. Show up during peak times and it's quick service, but expect a small wait, because they're serving a line of people usually. read more

Went today and ordered a grinder I was so disappointed. Bread tasted stale and it seems like they changed their recipe. Service sucked and they always have disgruntled faces when walking in. Called to see if they had a menu online and they didn't. We ordered a veggie sub, no cheese and said, "put all the veggies you've got on it." Apparently all they have for veggies is shredded lettuce and tomato. Oh and provolone cheese is apparently a veggie . Asked if they had a kids size option and they didn't... No biggie. Nice local place with a loyal following of regulars. They make their own bread which was great, the eggplant was cooked perfectly, and the prices are not bad at all. It was almost a 5-star grinder; the only negatives were that the sausage was a little too greasy, and I thought their sauce was just average. I've been to a number of grinder shops, and most of them don't really care about their atmosphere - well, Vocatura really pushes the limits in that regard. Let's face it, the place looks more like a decrepit convenience store than any kind of actual restaurant. No indoor seating, just 1 picnic table outside. Very sad day. I am from the area but live out west. I always look forward to their grinder. Had one today and I guess they do not bake their bread anymore. Anyone can slice salami.
