Customer service very friendly and helpful to someone like me, unfamiliar with the cuisine. Cozy little spot, there's never been anyone but me dining in all the times I've been there. theres plenty of tables and always folk coming in and out. I've tried the curried goat, oxtail, beef, and kingfish plates. The meats are superbly seasoned and the texture is pleasant. I always get the brown rice and beans with my plate, it's delicious. The plates come with a choice of cabbage or a vegetable mix, and I always choose the cabbage. It's fresh and the flavor contrasts well with the savory meats and rice. Oxtail is my favorite, then the goat, then the beef. All spectacular. The fish was good but a little dry and bony, so I'd pick something else unless you're craving seafood. One note: not spicy at all. I love a hot meal and after all I've heard about Caribbean cuisine and after the lady behind the counter told me to be careful because it's spicy my hopes were high. First time trying here and was neither impressed or disappointed. The fried chicken and curry / jerk chicken were a highlight. The brown rice and beans were pretty good but very mushy. The yellow rice and Mac n cheese needed some flavor or seasoning of some sort. The plantains were hard and seemed old which is weird since I went during prime lunch time. The service wasn't bad but my first time my questions seemed more like a bother than interested in being helpful. I wouldn't say don't try it but it wouldn't on my list either. read more

The oxtail was tender and flavorful. I love that they give a good amount of gravy on the rice. The rice was cooked perfectly! The meal came with a side of steamed cabbage. They were out of plantain but, theirs is usually good. The restaurant has a few parking spaces, there's also street parking. There's tables inside with plenty of traditional dishes and dessert. I mean, it was ok.... So, I am a Flames girl through and through, but didn't love my last experience, so I figured I'd try a new place. I agree that that the atmosphere is nice and it's really clean. I ordered the medium oxtails with rice and beans and veggies. I know prices have gone up and I'm not opposed to paying, but when I tell you I got the smallest (both in size and quantity) amount of oxtails! At least try to make sure there are at least 1-2 decent pieces knowing how much you are charging. The flavor was pretty good, but I'm still looking for my new favorite spot. read more

My wife and I found this restaurant while on a visit to the Fuller Craft Museum. We were blown away by the flavors! We sat down and ate while watching the people being served and enjoyed the experience very much. It was busy! The servers smiled and and made up a beautiful plate for me. I felt very welcome. I got the Ox Tail Stew, the "DIrty Rice" made with the coconut milk and red beans, fried ripe plantains, cabbage slaw and a Ginger Beer to drink. My wife had the curried chicken, rice and slaw, with a Pepsi. The small size is good for one adult, but I'd recommend selecting a larger size, so you have left-overs, you won't be sorry! It's a great combo: visit the Fuller Craft Museum and fill your mind, then have a delicious lunch at Hartley's to fill your belly! It's a win/win! If I could give this place zero stars I would simply because of the constant attitude. Employees are rude and unprofessional. The food is ok overall. Sometimes the goat is good but mostly its watered down and lack flavor. Very inconsistent. I usually order the medium goat with white rice and plantins. Today I ordered the same. This time i counted it, I got 12 tiny piece of goat and I do mean tinys and one of those had a bone with it. No sauce on the rice, even though I asked for more sauce they twisted up their face, rolled their eyes and did not put any more. So now I have white rice with barely any sauce on it after paying $20. Ridiculous. This is closer to my home, but I'll take the drive to Randolph to FLames. The employees are friendly and the food is better. Believe me, i wont be back to Hartleys and anyone who i speak to i'll make sure to tell them don't visit this establishment until you guys learn to do better. To the owners Hartley Thompson and Flore Thompson, do better in representing the caribbean people. Your employees are serving the public, people from all walks of life so, If you want to have longevity in the business, train your employees to be professional, courteous and polite. I can still remember when I first heard about them opening. I was beyond excited. Upon entering the vibe? Excellent. Music plays, large screen tvs for dine-in patrons, and impeccably clean. Nine times out of ten, you'd even see the owner cooking up the goodness in the back, while his attentive and friendly servers worked diligently to take care of our needs. Wonderful service, excellent food. Consistency all around. Jump several months later, and unfortunately, the excitement is gone. Dissapointed has entered the chat. The first bad experience? I'll even take the fault because I simply didn't pay attention. I got off work and headed in for their breakfast. I was looking forward to some porridge. The woman who assisted me said there wasn't any porridge that day but and different hot cereal I wasn't interested in. I ordered a meal for my wife, a breakfast meal of salt fish, banana and ackee, only 13.99 I saw. Grabbed two beef patties with coco bread and no cheese, and I asked her for another plate of the same as my wife. I received two small containers. One of each. I didn't think anything of it. I also ordered some carrot juice and a soda..... It was when I got home that I realized it came up to 66 dollars. I went to look at my reciept, and there was no atomization of what I ordered, just the total. Im thinking, 45.00 at best. Like I said, it was when I got home and seeing as they're a good 25 minutes away. I chalked it up as a loss and moved on. The next visit, the same woman was serving along with another, the one who took my order last time.. When I ordered my medium goat, I asked how much another scoop would be. The woman serving turned to the other woman who took my order last time. She clearly seemed like she was bothered. Only to see she had an earpod in listening to music. She wasn't like the others whom I'd dealt with previously. She walked over to the computer and after a few moments she said "7.99". No eye contact whatsoever. I said, "7.99?" I was just asking again to make sure. She said nothing. I said "nevermind, no thank you." The woman then shrugged her shoulders and walked away... I came home after spending another 40.00 dollars on my wife and is meals and thought about it. Im never going back, What has happened to general consistency? I've loved jamaican food my entire life, been called a "goat head" for my love of it by friends. I've also been a chef well over 30 years and have taken a devoted stand on customer service, no mattet what. When that leaves the window, so do I. Hartley, your food is SO good! I ain't gon lie...the food here was incredible,well cooked and fresh ...I had jerk wings rice and peas cabbage ,plantains,a a piece of fried chicken....everything was perfectly prepared...I've tried all the other carriibean restaurants in the area and this is by far the best...not even close...hand down...no my wife isn't a big eater...I got her ox tail and white rice and cabbage,normally she'll eat half and then save half...she said the food was so good she couldn't put it down!!! The food is great there! So no more Flames for me for while! I love the curry chicken and rice and peas. What I liked about the curry chicken is that curry sticks to the chicken. A lot of other Jamaican restaurants their curry chicken looks beige because the curry chicken doesn't stick! I stopped into this restaurant yesterday afternoon after many rave review about the grand opening that happened last week. I ordered a plate for myself and for my family. I purchased the oxtail, jerk chicken, and bbq chicken plate. All the plates come with a heaping serving of rice as well as a vegetable side (cabbage or green beans). Gave them a shot because they're a new restaurant. I think they opened up about a week ago if not less. It's going to hurt me to leave this comment but the food is HORRIBLE. The rice and peas is bland and soggy with way too much coconut milk and made with canned kidney beans so the color isn't there. The curry goat is tender but it's lacking flavor no ginger no pimento no garlic no seasoning salt just curry a cheap kind of curry, string beans are wack sweet plantains are wack. The oxtails are disgusting sweet like ketchup extremely dark like they use way too much browning. In light of great reviews I decided to try this new Jamaican restaurant and I might say it's not bad but not the best in my books. The service is super friendly and everyone who walks in will feel welcomed. The decor is nice and there is 2-3 tables for dine in. This is more of a take out spot. Now the food... I had the jerk chicken and flavor wise it's there. The meat is moist but some pieces was a bit dry. For the reviews the say huge or big portions, well I didn't get that. Portion was average at best. I also tried a beef patty and again the flavor was on point, however aesthetically it was a mess as it was over baked and the meat now covers the crust. Well as a server I wouldn't even sell it or give a better patty to the customer but nope she gave me the ugly one lol. read more

Great place to grab lunch! Curry chicken was fantastic- full of flavor and fall off the bone. Oxtail stew was tender. Beef patty with cheese was great too. Man! Let me tell you. I met the owner a few months ago through a mutual friend. At the time we discussed restaurants and the level of customer service and quality a customer should receive for paying their hard earned money. He was working for another restaurant at the time and I discussed my displeasure of how the hostess treated people. He actually agreed and said it would be handled. Fast forward today after that mutual friend told me Hartley opened. I took my family there today after a long day of AAU with my sons baseball events. The food and service is slamming. Finally, someone got it right. I had the steak, rice and beans and green beans with dumplings and gravy as suggested by the server. The steak was seasoned perfect with just enough spice to kick in the flavor at the end. My wife had the oxtail and she was pleased as well. The food is great, the staff is nice and everything served with a smile. Not like that other place where the server is mean and doesn't want to give you extra gravy.
