I want to thank the owner, the butter-cream complexioned miss, and the younger copper complexioned gentleman, for being kind and humoring me. Me, being very nerdy and awkward, asked them a lot of questions, and they kindly obliged. I am grateful for the chit chat and great drinks. My initial order was the hojicha latte, some of the best I have tasted outside of Little Tokyo and K-town. Then, because I didn't want to just sit there waiting without an order, I purchased a lychee oolong tea and much later, the summer tonic, one for me and one for the person I was meeting with. Both tasted wonderful, but the summer tonic felt special. Never knew that tropical fruit and matcha could pair so well together! Definitely worth the trip. Quick story. Like the Steve Urkel that I am, I spilled my hojicha latte on the table. The owner without hesitation, offered to make me another one for free. She even quickly wiped the table without any hint of malice or attitude. I declined the offer, but I will never forget her kindness, because let's be real, that hojicha ain't cheap. And I know because I buy mine from Sugimoto Tea Co. for $18.00, about 0.33 cents a gram. When it comes to costs, remember that inputs and labor requires more money than the past, and that inflation impacts everything and everywhere. Their prices are comparatively slightly cheaper than similiar shops in South LA and outside of it. This ain't the hood (even the hood is hella expensive), rent ain't cheap. I treat this place like the weekly luxury that it is. Well worth it! *Leimert Park isn't the hood, it's where the African American/Black middle and upper middle class used to live (some still do, but the demographics have considerably changed, much more diverse). I moved to LA shortly before they closed so I was excited to see they were opening back up and an added bonus they would have a hidden speakeasy inside with live performances on certain days. My friend and I went opening weekend and it was a bust. We couldn't get in, Terrace Martin was performing so I wasn't surprised that it was super packed. No problem I knew I'd try them another day. Anyhoo a couple of weeks later I was in Lemiert Park for an art exhibit and decided to give Harun another shot. I don't drink coffee but when I looked at their menu online I saw they had smoothies so I walked over. Immediately when I walked in the vibe was off. There were 2 customers seated already. The woman at the register didn't acknowledge me at all. Shortly after a man came out with items for the 2 customers. He didn't say anything. I start reading the menu but didn't see anything about smoothies so I ask the lady at the front if they had them. She pretty much waved me off and said that's what we have or atleast that's what it sounded like she said. I look back at the menu and again didn't see smoothies so I asked her again. She does the same thing like she can't be bothered with my with questions. Atp it does look like she is making something or maybe handling another order but a simple "give me a sec and I'll be with you" would have sufficed. After that I just walked out. I love my people but black owned or not I don't spend my money where it's doesn't seem to be wanted or appreciated. Went across the street to ORA(which is my normal smoothie spot in Leimert Park). Greeted as soon as I walked in, they switched up their menu some but guy at the front explained it all to me with no problem. Completely different experience. Such a cute hidden spot to chill, study, or just hang out for a bit. The whole vibe is very record store/music inspired and feels super cozy without trying too hard. The menu is pretty simple and they don't have a ton of pastry options, but honestly the quality of the coffee makes up for it. Everything tasted well made and balanced. The staff was also really welcoming and friendly, which always makes a difference. Plus they have wifi, so it's actually a great little place to get work done or relax for a while. Harun Coffee is definitely a community staple. Their Earl Grey latte was smooth, not too sweet. I paired it with a homemade biscuit and strawberry jam, egg and cheddar breakfast sandwich, which was delicious. The Harun staff always shows genuine love, too, and makes you feel welcome, no rush at all. Then that speakeasy annexed to the main cafe was a totally different mood, with low lights and a time-capsule, retro, music/art space with vintage furnishings. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that the wall was a door and the portal to one of the most comfortable cafes I've been in. Ordering was a breeze and the helpful staff got me a vanilla latte and the chicken biscuit in what felt like moments. Both were good and enjoyed in the side room that was an inviting warm/brown. The seating was plush and comfortable and folks could be found in every corner. Conversations, reading, and work were getting done everywhere I could see. They could have diagonal parking on both sides, but then shorten them a little, AND have a 5 min temporary parking strip right in the middle so that cars can still pass through no prob. I used to frequent this area a lot on Sundays back when Sika Shop was around and hosted the African Market Festival (usually in August or September), so when I noticed this coffee shop had opened, I was curious. I'm more into matcha, while my daughter leans toward coffee, so we decided to give it a try. When we walked in, it wasn't very busy, two women ahead of us and two women working behind the counter (one older cashier and a younger woman making drinks). My daughter was looking for something along the lines of a vanilla latte with caramel and cinnamon, but didn't really see anything that matched what she usually likes. She asked a few questions, but the cashier didn't seem very engaged or warm, even sipping on a drink. It just didn't feel welcoming, which immediately set the tone. I went ahead and ordered a matcha with cream top (12 oz) for $13. For context, the most I've ever paid elsewhere for a 16 oz matcha is around $8.50, so this felt steep. I told myself maybe it would be worth it... but unfortunately, it wasn't. It tasted mostly like straight milk, with very little matcha flavor. Nothing memorable. There was a really pretty drink I noticed, purple in color with matcha and what I believe was coconut water. I actually would've preferred to try that, and later a guy who came in and answered my questions about it was quite nice. But first impressions matter, and the initial vibe didn't really rub me the right way. I will say: the décor is nice. My daughter went into the second room/hidden area next door and said it was really cute. I've also seen videos on IG and it does look aesthetically pleasing. I really wanted to love this place. It being Black-owned and located in an area I used to frequent often, especially when I would bring my daughter here when she was younger, made me genuinely excited to support it. Unfortunately, the experience fell short of what I was hoping for. Between the lack of warmth, the underwhelming drink, and the $13 milky matcha... it's a no for me. I won't be returning. read more

It was sweetened with something (can't quite remember what), but it had the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness, which I really enjoyed. I also ordered a chai tea, which was decent; I personally prefer mine a bit stronger, but it was still enjoyable. The customer service really stood out. The guy taking our order was warm, welcoming, and didn't rush us at all, which made it a great first experience. What really impressed me was how fast and efficient they were. Our drinks were already finished being made before we even completed payment. I didn't have to stand around waiting at all, which was a nice touch. Dear Yelp Community, I visited for the first time this week, and what a pleasant surprise...much more than a coffee shop! Upon entry, I was greeted by a professional and pleasant man who made me a good chai latte and explained about the venue, then another man gave me a personal tour of the shop because there is another section that is divided by a secret door into a cozy room with high ceilings, diverse furniture (with descriptions on the wall in the other area of the shop with the espresso machine), an area as a platform for performers, a wall area for projected films, as well as restroom with information on the walls that portray the history of the neighborhood (Leimert Park) and African-American history (cultural heritage). Also, I was informed that this venue is a dry space (no alcohol), open very late, has a kitchen with food, and offers community events. I highly recommend this venue. Enjoy, and well wishes. First I would say the music and aesthetic were amazing. You can really feel the ambience. The only thing was the service. 2 people working behind the counter.One was busy talking to someone else and the other just staring off into the distance. Can't immediately find anywhere menus and it seems the only one is a very small one at the counter. The girl with curly hair still didn't greet or even acknowledge us but standing directly in front of us was just very off putting. Didn't ask us what we want or even look in our direction so we just started saying our order. There's no descriptions on the food or pastries so we had to ask what everything is. Once we ordered she just walked away. I didn't leave a tip because they just didn't deserve one. Once the drinks were ready the same server didn't say anything or try to let us know. Ambiance: Minimalist but very cute itside... clean and quiet. Enough seating for a couple of groups. I went midday on Friday, and it was fairly light inside. Service: Overall, I had a smooth experience. Simple menu, helpful and friendly batista. No complaints. Food: I loved my Chai Latte, perfectly sweet and creamy. This is a beautiful space, and that is unfortunately the only good thing I can say about this cafe. My drinks were completely forgotten about. I went up to ask about my order 3 times in the hour I was waiting for it. The first time I went up, no one really seemed to care to even start making it even though at this point, it'd been 20 minutes since I ordered. After 40+ minutes I was told they were "still getting my order out." This was not true because when I gave them one final shot and went up after 52 minutes, I was asked what my order even was, I then just decided to ask for a refund. Barista also walked past my friend and I multiple times, delivering drinks to others without acknowledging that we still hadn't received our order. I tried to give them grace but, maybe they need to close and reopen again. Disappointed, won't be back. read more
