In my quest to locate cool, lesser known places, I stumbled across Jet Records while searching online and finally had a chance to visit. The store occupies the same building as a jet ski repair shop, which is a little odd to say the least, but trust me when I say that this place is a hidden gem. Specializing in traditional heavy metal, power metal and hard rock, it was right up my alley, and the gentleman that was working on the day I visited was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, taking the time go through the CDs they keep behind the counter with me so that I could pick out some sick discs. Indeed, although Jet Records is definitely more focused on vinyl, they also have a small yet killer CD selection and being more of a CD guy I walked away extremely satisfied, picking up new discs from Glacier and Leather Witch plus some used Anthrax and Armored Saint. If you're into old school trad/heavy metal, power metal or hard rock, you owe it to yourself to check out Jet Records.

It's really uninviting in here now versus when they first re-opened and I found out why. Immediately after walking in, I got a snide remark of "Day three? Maybe you'll buy something?" And when I left without buying anything, I got pestered and called a "Transit Kid." I tried explaining that I can't see very well, so it takes me a while to look at all the small items/read price tags, but I could barely get a word in. I live nearby, so I'd often stop in after I got coffee next door until i had to leave and go to work. Telling people not to window shop at your antique/trinket store is absurd, and I REALLY hope you weren't insinuating that you thought I was stealing.

Its always so genuine, and they are so amazingly knowledgeable on things. Any question I have they either know the answer or are quick to find out the answer for me. The store is clean and well organized. It definitely isnt like some stores where you feel like you're wading through a dust bowl. The floor staff are incredibly kind and helpful as well. I love that the floor staff asks if they can help, and are quick to grab any unwieldy items so that I can shop easily and hands free. The variety of items that I find are always amazing and and always changing. I never know what Im going to find and I always go home with some amazing treasures that I didn't know I needed. The takeaway from this long winded review is this: EngelbergAntiks is my favorite downtown store and you won't be disappointed in popping in. Make sure to tell John and Nancy "Hi!", and make sure you have plenty of time on your parking meter. You're going to need it if you want to see everything in the store.

I am so lucky to have such a kind and honest local business owners who allow me to utilize their space frequently. If you're reading this and are worried about their 1-star reviews, please understand that most of the time it is because people try to palm the smaller items as this IS an antique shop. However, this business has cameras, and anytime potential thieves try that they get caught and come to the internet to fabricate lies to collect what's left of their ego after the owners chose NOT to get police involved, which they are totally within their right to do. I bought my turntable there. Ive even bought a shirt and some earrings from there. I've always had a great experience and a great conversation with Bruce or his help every time I walk in. I'm Latino as well so I can assure everyone there's ABSOLUTELY NO inappropriate behavior happening (see a previous 1-star comment). Vortex has a great variety of genres, everything is well laid out and easy to navigate. I'm always asked if I need help or if I'm looking for something in particular. Bruce has even special ordered me a few records he didn't have in stock. This is a great local business (in operation since the early 90s!) to support and I 1000% recommend stopping by.

There is quite the wide selection of records, and they also buy records. We brought some of ours to sell, and after inspecting the condition, we were given decently good money back on them. If I have more time in the future, I would definitely go take a deeper look at their offerings. This was a fun little adventure that's worth the trip!
