This is really fantastic DVD rental store and film museum, but I'd rather stand in a TSA line than the check out line at Movie Madness. Checking out DVD's should not take this long. If there are more than 2 people in line, it can take ten, 15, 20 minutes. There has to be a simpler way, it should not be this slow. read more

Super friendly staff and low prices for what you get (unedited, often unavailable movies + bonus features galore). I've been visiting weekly for over a year for rentals and I'm still in awe of the selection of both movies and movie paraphernalia (props, clothes, models). While physical media is more involved than streaming, it's so important, if you're local you need to make this place a part of your rotation. You'll discover a deeper love for the medium through routine visits to Movie Madness. They have a small selection of previously-rentals for purchase, and behind the counter a small shelf of sealed copies from various boutique labels for personal ownership aswell. I've bought a few from them and hope that down the line they can find the space to offer a wider selection of movies for purchase in addition to their 90,000+ titles offered for rent. They also have a small screening room with killer sound, and offer a few free screenings on Sundays. read more

I swear I'm not that old but I SO miss walk-in video rental stores. I grew up with a local one by my house that just recently closed and to be honest I thought they were all gone. But then I found this place, and it's incredible! First, they have a HUGE selection of videos that are organized by (adorably named) categories. They also have a wall of academy award best picture by date - which I love because I've slowly been working through the list. Second, they have a cute little theater within the store that they play previews and sometimes even films on. When I went I got to see the last half of The Wizard of Oz! Third, the store is owned by a major movie fan who has collected random memorabilia from a wide range of films. So, as you browse for a movie, you'll walk by costumes and props from some famous (and some lesser known) movies. My only complaint is that it's not closer to my house! read more

This place brings back a great sense of nostalgia. The only things that have changed are the masks during covid times and the expanding selection of movies from the popular current ones to the very obscure. Employees are friendly. Everything is so very well organized. I do love walk-in video rental stores and just going thru all of the aisles. Wow, this place has a TON of movies to rent. And not just mainstream stuff, but all kinds of independent and foreign films, cult classics, every kind of genre you can think of. It is all very well organized and they have a computer you can look stuff up if you aren't sure where to find what you are looking for. And on top of all the movies there to rent, they have a museum spread throughout with all kinds of authentic (and a few reproductions) of various movie memorabilia/costumes/props. The museum was what brought us and it was really neat to just wander the store and look at all the fantastic stuff ranging from costumes worn by main characters in famous movies to set decor and props, etc. It's definitely worth a visit just to check out the museum items. read more

I'm visiting from the SF Bay Area and this was on my to-do list. I won't be able to rent movies from there, but I do love movie history and the place is like a mini museum of Hollywood memorabilia. Definitely stop by to see costumes and props from some classic Hollywood films, like Casablanca, West Side Story, Sunset Boulevard, the Maltese Falcon, Citizen Kane and Some Like it Hot. First coming here, I was very impressed with the vast variety of foreign films. They have it all! I'm big on European and Asian flicks, so they don't disappoint if you're looking for a particular title. I've been an avid film connoisseur since the late 1990's and this place has been around a while and has stood the test of time. I highly recommend checking this place out if you wanna give Amazon a break, plus you're supporting local. The owner is very kind and a collector of replicas and some original props from the last 60 or so years. They do have an Instagram as well if you are curious. Wow. Movie Madness is absolutely epic. I did some research prior to visiting Portland and I knew that I just HAD to check this place out. Brendan and I ended up coming here twice during the 4 days we were in Portland, and I wish we could have spent even more time here. Not only is this the coolest video store I've ever seen, but it's also essentially a museum as well. We could not believe the memorabilia that is here. From movie props to costumes to replicas of famous movie monsters- they had it all! We literally came here just to walk around and try to look at every incredible thing they had on display. Now, back to the videos.. the movies are categorized in really unique ways. The back room had a lot of horror movies, cult classics, movies that were categorized by actor and director. They had documentaries, music videos on tape, travel videos, tv shows... everything. Even a ton of a foreign films and they had an Adam Sandler section, which was of course, my fav. They had a bunch of cool merchandise for sale, including t-shirts, posters, dvds, and a beer that was made just for Movie Madness through a collab with a local brewery- how cool is that?! You could either take the beer to-go, or drink it in the video store while you browse (Which is exactly what we ended up doing). We had the greatest time here, and it was probably the highlight of our entire time in Portland. I can't recommend this place enough and I CANNOT wait to go back. read more

This place is epic in the video rental realm and you are making a mistake if you don't come here! So so many movies and genres, with cool pieces of history from many different movies. Hands down, the best place in Portland to rent movies. While stupid places like Hollywood Video and Blockbuster have gone to the toilet in recent days, this local video store is a movie junkie's delight. Not only can you find a lot of hard to find video's, especially on VHS, but they also have a great variety of new movies too. While those corporate stores and charging an arm and leg these days, this place has always been affordable to go. $3.50 for all new releases for 3 days and $2.50 for older titles. Blue-Ray has a great variety too that is worth checking out. I remember going here 9 years shortly after graduating from high school. I could not believe they had copies of Dragonball Z on tape from Japan. At that time, the series had not aired all the episodes here in U.S. Also, it was like walking into a museum at the same time. The owner has collected various memoribilia over the years. He has the certificate of authenticity to prove it too. When I worked at a corporate electronic store, *cough cough* Best Buy, he would always come in and buy a ton of movies. He always wounded up in my lane too to get rang up. It was not until I saw the Portland Tribune it was the same guy that owned this place. I love the huge selection of TV Shows available to rent. $5 for 5 days is a real steal compared to other stores. The various categories gives something for everyonee in their taste. The hidden red door for those into the "adult" videos reminds when I was kid when they had those sections hidden away from public. A good insider tip, if there is a movie they do not have, talk to the owner and he will do what he can to get it. The staff is friendly for the most, although there is one guy who just doesn't seem to care or isn't happy. I am surprised he is still there, but it's very scarce I see him. It's a great rental store. The staff is helpful. The selection is amazing. The memorabilia is fun. It's clean. Good location. I barely pay attention to the prices, I'm so happy it exists but I think they track with an Amazon rental and that starts to get to the real appeal of this place: it makes tangible again watching movies at home. Netflix and Amazon and all the others coming down the chute make shopping so easy as you glide through their GUIs but there's nothing tactile about it. It's 1s and 0s. It's in the ether. There's no obligation to care or show interest in what you're watching. When you have a disc you went out and rented and it's due back by a certain time there's something of an expectation you watch, pay attention, get your money's worth, and when you return it you've completed a transaction that feels real. As the glut of streaming services makes boob tube as miserable as when we were bedraggled by cable, hopefully people will find the utility of places like Movie Madness. read more

In an era where it seems every other video store is going out of business, it is incredibly exhilarating to walk into a place like Movie Madness and see the richness of selection. Some pretty cool movie props on display too. Like it has been mentioned by other Yeeps, the foreign film, classics and TV show sections are huge. They even have an "adults only" section (I hadn't seen one of those in years). I love the self-service kiosk where you can look up a movie and find out exactly where it is located in the store. I also was impressed with how easy it was to sign up for a new membership. I liked too the clear instructions the staffer provided on how the memberships worked. Prices are very reasonable, though greedy me does wish the checkout time was five days and not just three days. But hey, with the fabulous video selection, I can live with that. read more

I will admit, I didn't know what to expect walking in to Movie Madness. I pass it all the time on the bus, but never really paid it any mind. Yes, I knew it was a movie rental place and I stopped going to places like that long ago. Does Blockbuster exist anymore? Redbox and Netflix have become the standard and the rest have been left in the dust. That's why Movie Madness is a surprise. A locally owned shop, but with a twist. Movie memorabilia. Items in cases throughout the store from movies that my parents grew up with to The Godfather and more current films. The knife from Psycho? Sure. Items from American Graffiti and the Maltese Flacon? Why not. Then you've got the movies and TV shows. Pretty much anything you could want and some sections even grouped by the directors. Lots of older films for the buffs out there. Cult films, classics and the current blockbusters. If you have never visited Movie Madness, consider yourself lucky because that means the greatest video store experience is still in your future. I stopped by Movie Madness for the first time in months today, and it has undergone some big changes. This store used to be like a maze, with another hallway or huge room jam packed with movies just right around the corner. Now the layout is much more open and spacious. I overheard the owner talking about how the Fire Marshall was not happy with the previous layout; too many people in small spaces. While I did like the mysteriousness of the old layout, I also appreciate not being burned to a crisp while trying to escape a DVD inferno. The selection here is amazing, with tons of classic movies, indie movies, foreign movies, etc. The owner has also a very nice collection of movie props and costumes on display, sort of a mini-movie museum. The feeling here is very laid back, very Portland. Feel free to browse at your leisure, search for your favorite movie in their computer database, or simply ask one of the helpful staff members. Prices are very reasonable, New Releases are $3 for two days while older movies are $2 for three days. They even have a lot of movies that come in plastic boxes and are encoded on some sort of magnetic tape. Someone told me that these can be played on a kind of machine called a veeseear.* After grabbing my copy of "Law & Order, the 14th Year, Disc 3" (Yeah, yeah, I hear you laughing. Shut up) I headed to the counter where I was informed that I had outstanding late fees, and would I like to pay for them now? Wow! These late fees had been in my account for at least six months and not once did I get a reminder phone call, or a letter in the mail threatening to send me to collections (I'm looking at you Blockbuster); plus I also had the option to say "Screw you Movie Madness! I'll pay my late fees when I feel like it, now give me my Sam Waterston!" If Netflix didn't exist with it's unbeatable selection and lack of late fees, this place would get more of my business. I love Mike's Movie Madness. They get points for their massive selection. Let's just say it's huge. It's all categorized but if you can't find some older film or don't know where to look, there are two in-store computers that can point you to the right direction. I also love looking at the interesting costumes and film collectibles they have on display. I imagine the real actor wearing that outfit or holding that tommy gun. The staff is on point too. I've always gotten a "hey how's it going" and always feel they treat each customer politely. Maybe they don't do the full on "Portland banter" but that's alright with me especially when the line is down the store. Movies. The whole concept is changing every day. The idea of shot on film, edited as film, and shown on film has evolved, Now it's a Frankenstein mashup of synthetically constructed machinima, edited and color graded in a machine, published as 3d HD, 4K or 8K video, hijacked and torrented, watched on an antique CRT, now hazardous waste, playing off a MacBook, maybe Netflix account hijacked or served from the iTunes borg. But Movie Madness remains the ultimate old school video rental store. They had a competition with Seattle's Scarecrow, for biggest and baddest, and won. (Some claim Scarecrow is bigger owing to its encyclopedic collection of how-to videos) The owner's madness as a collector is epic. Not only the DVDs and VHS tapes, but a large collection of props from famous films. How about a Maltese Falcon, given to the actor who stared in the namesake film, or scary creature models from Alien, or the actual shower scene knife from Psycho, Yoda, maybe a chair from Casablanca. There is that and more! That collector ethic for the epic, odd and obscure translates to the videos too. Netflix can never equal it, nor Pirate Bay. The store is organized by new releases this week/month, last few months; separated by general release, foreign, special interest-documentaries and even erotic. Then there is the classics section organized by leading actor, actress, silent, musicals, film noir and the family friendly section. That's just the front room! The middle room has a huge foreign section, worth the trip alone, drama, comedy, current actors and actresses, arts films, sections organized by directors, indy and Hollywood (seperately), and TV, organized as British, Westerns, Science Fiction, then by decade. The back room is a treasure and true reflection of a collector's madness. There are horror films, divided by director, sci-fi, year, series, strange and weird. There are monster movies divided by type of monster, including leviathans and behemoths. Cult movies divided into more than a dozen categories, including the rare and odd Psychotronic releases. Anime and its sub categories - again worth the trip in itself. Bizarre, a closed room for NC-17 films, thrillers, erotic thrillers, spy films, fantasy, kung fu, disaster and music videos. This is not a complete list by far. One of the store's best features is the Employee Picks section. It rotates continuously. Remember Tarantino worked for years in a video store, developing his insane knowledge of obscure film. That is the idea here. Employees each pick 3-4 classics ranging from obscure, to ironic, to awesome. I have never been disappointed by an Employee Pick, I have one on rent now. The Employee Pick rentals are $1! Their computer to search the collection and tell you where it is shelved is primitive. Hope that can improve. The staff at the window by the computer can tell you if an item you can't find is out on rent. The store also rents a few extremely rare videos, some with special very large deposits, clearly marked. You will not find them anywhere else. I know that social network sourcing is the future. But for now, Movie Madness is the most well organized video source to browse and find something you can take home from a brightly lit place for hours of enjoyment. GREAT PLACE FOR MOVIE MANIACS! I'm not a movie buff as some of my friends are, but I would enjoy a good flick here and there; UNLESS it's a horror flick because I get nightmares AND wouldn't be able to go to sleep =X A friend had recommended for me to watch "Drugstore Cowboy" (featuring Matt Dillon and Heather Graham; 1989) and I didn't know where to find it. I knew I wouldn't find the movie at your local Redbox! Another friend said I would be able to find it at Movie Madness, so I trekked my way across town to rent the movie. Movie Madness is located in the heart of the Belmont District. I walked in here lost and in awe of the thousands of movies they had to offer! I didn't know where to start. I perused the aisles hoping to find the movie under genre but had no luck. I ended up going to the computer kiosk to locate the movie and found that it was located under director. I was then able to find the movie within a few minutes. There is no fee for having a membership here. You don't even need a membership card (they use your driver's license). For $2.50 I was able to rent "Drugstore Cowboy" (which happened to be filmed in Portland, Oregon) for 3 days. I was surprised the 1989 movie was made into a DVD! [side note] = The movie was quite unique and I had enjoyed the film. Highly recommended if you're into Matt Dillon or Gus Van Sant movies. Movie Madness is the premiere destination for any film buff! You could spend hours sifting through their enormous collection and end up walking out with five movies when you specifically came for just one. You've got a seemingly endless catalogue at your fingertips. The advent of streaming movies has been nice for convenience sake, but none of the services (a la carte or all-you-can-eat) offer a viewing library as deep as MM. I think MM has set the right prices for their rentals. $3.50/$2.50 (new releases/everything else) for three days is just the right amount of time for most to get through a film (or two!) and still have time to return it before late-fees set in. A whole season of a TV show goes for $5 for five days; a great way to catch up on past seasons of your new favorite. Use the computer kiosks to help you find what you're looking for. If you end up getting lost, ask a staff member. They know where EVERYTHING is and can track it down for you ahead of time if you call before 4pm.
