I'm giving two stars because I love the fact that they cater to the gluten free crowd and now they are using tallow instead of vegetable oil. Way to go, guys! We live all the way on the other side of DFW and had to pickup a car in Rowlett so thought you stop and have a bite. Decided on this place because it was close to our destination and we're very happy with our choice. We ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and the single patty cheeseburger with fries and tots. Everything was really good! I like my fries and tots crispier so can't rave about them, they were meh but the burger and chicken sandwiches were really tasty. Hat Creek! Or as I like to call it, "hipster McDonald's" This is a good fast food restaurant for families. The wooden playground and country-esque feel are a sharp contrast to the usual brightly colored plastic play equipment at other places. They emphasize Texas beef in their menu, but they carry a veggie burger and tater tots as well. They have about 4 different beers on tap and a nice selection of frozen treats featuring gummy worms. The guy who took our order was quite amiable and the service was fast (as expected.) I have to take away a star because on our last visit, the place was crawling with flies. Not just one or two... easily a dozen. Yikes! Still, if you're not too fussy, you can't beat this as a place to bring your kids. read more

I used to be a big fan of Hat Creek but man have they gone downhill. honestly I don't know if it's all locations or just this one but our visit was not great. Our french fries were Cold and tasted like they had been sitting around for a while or maybe cooked in Old Oil or something. I'm not sure what it was but it wasn't a pleasant flavor or Texture. the restrooms were in poor condition and overflowing trash even though they had plenty of employees working at the time we dined in. one of the major selling points for me with hat Creek used to be all of the sauces but even those don't taste the same, they just aren't it anymore. Now I know everybody is suffering from higher costs And in most cases I don't mind that as long as the food is good but in this case it just wasn't worth the price. small portions high cost equals no good. so that will probably be the last time I ever dine at Hat Creek burgers read more

Been through the drive through twice in the last week. 1st time, I ordered, got to the window, paid and proceeded to sit there for 10 mins. When the guy came back to the window, he asked me what I ordered...... what do you mean what did I order, I've been sitting here waiting for 10 mins for my burger and tots. Eventually got my food and my burger was wrong but there was nothing I could do about it since I don't live close to the Rowlett location. 2nd time I came through the drive through they told me "ummm we can't take any orders through our drive though but you can come inside". Ummm NO! I had my two dogs in the car and I couldn't come inside. Drove past the window just to see 5, 6, 7 people standing around laughing not doing a dang thing. Why couldn't you take my order? The Ambiance for this kind of facility was fine. Clean table, floor and restrooms. Plenty of room for a bigger crowd. Children outside playing. They have one TV with sports playing if you are watching sports. The drink station is a great idea but seems to be located in the wrong area. There is always a back up and crowded with people once they place their order. The receiving hot line needs a little help as well as you cannot hear the orders being called. I am hard of hearing and makes it worse to hear our name called. There should be some kind of sound system to let the customers know their order is ready. read more

This place can't get my drive thru order right. I always order without onions and when I get home I have onions. I Can't just remove them because the oil is still there. Ordered and paid extra for avocado and did not receive them. After I am home it's too late and I shouldn't have to tear up my food in the drive thru to recheck the kitchen's work. read more

Wanted to get something to eat with some solid protein, because I was having a medical procedure the next morning that I had to fast for. Went to the Hat Creek in Rowlett to get a Grilled Chicken Sandwich. The hubs got the Turkey Burger. I needed a microscope to find the chicken patty. It had been pounded thin and then overcooked. Absolutely by far the smallest chicken patty I've ever seen. It was about 2/3 the size of the palm of my hand and I have small hands. (Yes, I put it on my palm to measure it!) Probably weighed about 1.5 ounces. It was just as chewy as it was small.. Bun was about 4". Not even close to what is pictured on their website. My tomato slices were bigger. It wasn't great but wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But it was still pretty pathetic. The hubs enjoyed his turkey burger. We split an order of sweet potato fries which were yummy-as usual. We sat outside since the temps were pleasant. It was fairly dirty out there; food under tables and sticky tabletops. Had to stop at Wendy's on the way home to get something to eat after eating at Hat Creek. Surely they can do better than this! Overall I like their food so I'm sure I'll go back for one more try. I doubt this is their usual way of doing things, but they really should take a little more pride in what they serve. read more

Silly me! I did NOT know they have a drive thru. I ordered online but was able to pick up using the drive through. Their veggie burger on a lettuce wrap with grilled onions and jalapeños WHAAAAT! Who invented this and why was it the best things I've eaten all day! I inhaled it so quick I am truly ashamed of myself! First location I ever tried, and still the best. I was last here about a month ago and they have the best customer service of the three I've been to. (Including Walnut Hill and Sachse). This is the smallest location of the three, and I don't think it had a kids play area like the other two have, but the customer service is hard to beat. I was in Rowlett on a Saturday evening around six o'clock and found that I wanted a burger. A good old fashioned, hearty burger with fresh fries and I didn't want to drive a long way for it. Having passed Hat Creek on many occasions and with 3.8 stars on Yelp I decided to give them a try. The exterior is visually appealing with a large covered patio and a nice playground for kids in plain view. The patio features heavy tables with well constructed floating benches for seating. It is a great improvement over picnic style tables. There are also multiple gas heaters which were quite effective at keeping the late spring chill at bay. The interior has four top square tables with wooden chairs and was quite cool with the air conditioning on despite the moderate outside temperatures. I placed my order with a nice young woman who asked how my day was going while entering my order. Full marks for friendliness. Unfortunately the food just didn't impress me in any way. The burger was listed as a double, which implied that it would be more substantial than a single, and that is undoubtedly true; but two paper thin patties does not satisfy much more than one would. The cheese and bacon were pretty good but did not add enough to make up for the lack of substance of the burger patties. All of the burgers on the menu were listed as 'double', so that appears to mean nothing in particular as it is their standard offering. As disappointed as I was with the burger, the fries just made me sad. They are not cut in the restaurant as I had hoped and most closely resemble those from Whataburger in size. Unfortunately the comparison begins and ends with the size as the serving size was quite small, varied between slightly undercooked and burnt to a crisp, and were covered with some sort of pepper seasoning that didn't make up for the underlying lack of flavor. Given that it was more expensive than fast food, I expected better food than fast food and was vastly disappointed. It's not bad; but the value is just not there. I can't recommend this place in good conscience unless you need a big covered patio with attached playground for your kids. read more

This replaced the Baker's Ribs BBQ okace on Hwy 66 in Rowlett (next door to Hubbard's). Plenty of onsite parking. Walk-in and order at the counter, and don't make my mistake! So much of the menu is devoted to double-meat burgers, that I thought the patties must be tiny (like In&Out Burgers). WRONG. The Hat Creek burger patties are full-sized, so the double-meat burgers are very filling! Super tasty too!! The Cowboy Hat Burger was fantastic, with just enough hickory sauce to add flavor with minimal mess (I still had to hose off after, but that's just me). Ghe pickles are crispy and packed w flavor, as is the bacon! My wife loved her single-patty burger, and she also raved about the good pickles! Fix your own drinks, and pick your own tables. The outdoor play area keeps the wildest diners out from under foot. Side choices include fries, tots, and a few other items. Did I mention how good the pickles were? Good food in a clean restaurant, at fair prices! Eat here! read more

I kept hearing Yelp friends rave about this place so make the trek and it was well worth it! The place was lively with lots of kids running in and out to the adjoining playground. That playground looked so fun with all of the items to climb, swing and hide about that I wanted to go play! I stayed an adult and ordered. I ordered a Big Hat and fries and had my burger in no time. Lots of sauce options so I tried a few. The burger was well caramelized, extra cold and crispy iceberg lettuce, nice ripe tomato and a tasty bun. The cheese gave a sweet tang to the wonderful beefy burger. The fries were a little limp, but tasted great. One of the sauces I grabbed was way better than ketchup and the poor ketchup was neglected in this meal. Worth the trip! read more

But I liked the flavor, liked the burger. A double is huge though...too much for me. He got the sombrero...and he said it was just okay. Nothing special. He added tomato and it was paper thin, so adding just one slice really didn't impress him. We got a side of tots and fries. The tots were so greasy that I had to take a picture of the wrap they were in just to prove it. Nasty. The fries were limp, skinny fries. Not great but at least they didn't leave pools of grease. He also got a shake but hasn't tried it yet. For $26, I wouldn't go back. I agree that it's overpriced. The fries/tots should be included with the burger. The up charge for that is just silly. While I try to review most places on my Travel and Table blog, I regret that I cannot do that for the HCBC in Rowlett. I had not researched it before I went today and when I asked, I was told that it was "fast food casual" and that my meal would be prepared fresh and delivered to my table. Orders are placed at the counter before sitting. While it might have been "prepared fresh", I just don't think it was possible that it was made to order. The burger, undercooked (still pink inside) in spite of the thin hamburger patty, had NO flavor and it was served cold. The fries were not warm either. I really wanted to like this place as it has a fun atmosphere. There is an inside eating area and a covered, outside eating area and a playground for children with an open airstream type camper in which to play. I've given Hat Creek three chances, and haven't been even remotely impressed. The Pros: The shakes are actually good, but not worth the $5 for a regular sized shake. You can get the same quality at Braum's next door for less than half the price. The toppings (onions, tomatoes, and pickles) are fresh. I actually like the buns that all of their sandwiches/burgers come on. The staff is ALWAYS friendly and accommodating. The cons: Pretty much everything else. The burgers are okay, but nothing spectacular. I've tried all of the sides and one word describes them all: Soggy. The chicken sandwich is uninspired and flavorless. The chicken isn't tender by any means. All the items I've had are bland and under seasoned. I don't think I've actually finished a meal here. It's pretty underwhelming. Save yourself the money and go to Braum's or Chick-Fil-A. This place isn't worth the prices they charge for food. read more
