Hattendo egg salad sandwich comes with soft bread and flavorful creamy egg salad (たまごサンド Tamago sando - Japanese egg salad sandwich). No wonder it has always been loved by everyone who has visited Japan. Fluffy and flavorful. Recommended.

We came here specially to try their cream buns. We were originally going to get "Classic flavours combo" which his 5 buns for $17.69, but they had a special where you pay no tax on 6 buns or more, so we opted for that special instead. We also wanted to try Seasonal Flavours however they had run out of the Pistachio and only had the Honey Lemon left. The store was nicely decorated and setup, which was expected for a place like this and located on the lower level of Square One between the Tim Hortons and the Sport Chek entrance. The person serving us was very quiet but polite and helpful. For our cream buns, we ordered the following: 1 X Matcha 1 X Azuki Bean 1 X Chocolate 1 X Honey Lemon 2 X Custard The buns are individually pre-wrapped with a label and packed into box. The cream buns were a bit smaller than expected but were packed with filling. The dough part of the bun was sweet almost like a Chinese bun. The custard filling was good overall, not overly sweet with just enough flavour, although I liked the plain custard the best. The price of these buns is a bit high for what you get, although the quality is good. Would I return? I'm not sure, at $3.69 per bun, I would prefer a decadent stuffed gourmet doughnut, although they are not the same thing.

(4.5 rounded up) I enjoyed sampling the signature wares at this Japanese eatery as I had never had a Japanese cream bun. The store location is very cozy; however, we were not able to stay in it to enjoy our sweets (not sure whether this is due to COVID or they never had inside seating.) The decor and lighting are dim, which I tend to like. We could see the display cases with all the cream bun and sandwich flavours; however, I saw no signs of the burgers and beverages that I later remembered are usually available at this chain. The staff were extremely polite and helpful. My only regret is that I forgot to specify that I wanted a receipt for my purchases, so I did not receive one - neither paper nor electronic option. I really hate this trend (thanks Tim Hortons and other businesses that love saving their little rolls of paper while customers lose track of how much they spend patronizing your business.) This chain was started in Japan in 1933 and apparently did well enough to expand to other countries, which is cool. The flour for the buns is actually produced and exported from Japan to the franchise locations. The pastry is extremely light and fluffy, even with the chilled cream filling. The cream flavours range from very subtle to very strong. We sampled the new Apple of my Eye flavour which was so subtle, we're not sure we could have discerned the flavour if we didn't know the name of it. On the other hand, the Milk Tea bun was fantastic - I think it was my favourite of the 4 flavours I tried. It was discernible and pleasant, without being overpowered by too much sugar instead. The regular Cream Bun was nice but also very subtle. With the subtle flavours, you get more of the pastry taste which tends not to be so nice since it's both very soft and well chilled. They recommend letting it sit for 15 minutes in that case. Last but not least, the Matcha was by far the more intensely flavoured bun. It tastes authentic and is literally cool, but with the light, whipped texture of the cream. Yummo! They run from just under $4 to closer to $5 each, which doesn't seem unreasonable considering the importation of the flour and the cost of running a franchise business period. They're marketed as being done "by hand" (although your guess is as good as mine exactly what that means.) I would definitely consider coming back for more if I were back in the mall. 100% worth a try to decide for yourself!

Custard cream bun (#1) and matcha cream bun (#2)

Very worth -- lives up to the hype and the price (C$3.98 each -- very rare to find top quality desserts for less than $4 these days) The staff ranking of the cream buns was 1. Custard, 2. Matcha and 3. Chocolate. I tried custard because it is "original" and matcha because I'm a big matcha fan, especially with desserts. Would have gotten the Azuki (red bean) cream bun as well. I would recommend getting the box to try multiple flavors (and you get the cute box). I had expected a puff pastry-esque outer shell, like the Beard Papa Cream Puffs, but this was literally a bread bun. The texture was so soft, thin and airy. The cream bun felt super delicate in my hands I thought the halves would fall apart after I split the bun in half, but everything stayed. My favorite part was that there was so much filling! Not sweet at all either. The texture and flavor of the matcha filling is exactly my preference, and the custard was so light and refreshing. The Izumi Sake collaboration series was in season, but because it was my first time I decided to stick with the classics. I went in the morning when they opened to avoid long lines/wait times; when I returned mid-afternoon they were out of all the puddings and croquette sandwiches. Looking forward to trying the melon buns, Hojicha pudding, matcha annin tofu, and Ebi fri sando next time.

Hmm Hattendo is a good place to stop by for a small treat. The cream buns definitely taste better warmed up . We tried ube flavour awhile back fresh ( and cold) from the store and thought it was nothing special . However recently tried both red bean and matcha warmed up and it was soo delicious ( messy too :p). The dripping cream was so heavenly! The cream buns are roughly just under $4 pp. it's also not really filling so I'd likely only return back on odd occasions when I don't mind non filling carbs :)

I got the seasonal flavor, Earl Grey, and it was really delicious! The cream wasn't too sweet and wasn't heavy at all. If I pass by there again, I'll definitely to try the Matcha flavor. I'm a big fan of tea flavors! lol

I had heard about these famous Japanese cream buns and had planned to visit the downtown core location... At some point in time. However, I was pleasantly surprised to pass by it within Square One's Food District! A little hidden, with not-the-best signs, it's located near the Pier 87. I had my heart set on the matcha-flavor but at around 7-8 pm, they were sold out! The only two flavors they had left were chocolate and Hokkaido-flavor so I purchase one of each. Both of these were extremely light and fluffy, best eaten after being chilled. Hokkaido is described as roasted green tea - a bit of an acquired taste but delicious. The chocolate one was rich in cocoa hence being semi-sweet only. At $3.95 plus tax, I would purchase more of these specialized treats, especially the matcha!

I wanted to try them because people had been raving about Hattendo. I visited the bakery with my boyfriend a month ago. Since there was a deal, we got a bunch of buns, two of each flavor, and the Tamago Burger. The bun was soft and the cream filling was also soft and cold. The mixture was great. However, the flavors were very subtle and a bit bland. I liked the matcha one the most because I happen to like matcha with no sweetness. But the bread wasn't THAT soft and the cream was not that spectacular that it was worth ~$5 each. They tasted like airplane bread but that we had to pay for it. Honestly, I would eat it again if I'm reaaaally craving but it's not worth $5 for sure. Maybe $1. I would rather get the ones at the Chinese bakeries which are cheaper and bigger.

The egg salad sandwiches here are so yummy! After seeing countless vlogs of these sandwiches, I just had to try them while I was on my stroll at Square One. The eggs are creamy and tasye slightly sweet from the mayo. A delightful sandwich that I could enjoy on the daily!

Extremely underwhelming after all the good reviews we heard. We heard that this place had amazing creme puffs, but was extremely disappointed in the flavors. We chose one Matcha and one Strawberry to try the difference and see which one we might order in the future. They both ended up not that great. Don't get me wrong, the creme inside is delicious and amazing, it's the exterior that tasted like bland crap. Honestly, in that moment, it tasted like a soggy hot dog bun... Not a pleasant experience and definitely not coming back...

Wicked little place. Tasty buns man. Like crepe consistently and the cream omg, tasty tasty tasty. Chocolate was the bomb. These are like donuts but all about the filling. Apple was delicious. Unique cool place but you gotta eat it fresh! It'll melt on ya!

Hattendo finally has a proper location at Square One! I've been visiting Hattendo occasionally since they were a small booth in the Food District, and I'm glad they have a permanent store front now. The buns Hattendo offers are always fluffy, creamy and just so satisfying. Their regularly stocked flavors that I love are the Custard, Matcha and Whipping Cream- all delicious! I finally tried their new seasonal buns, 'Apple of my Eye' and 'Silky Milk Tea'. After trying them I am obsessed with these limited time flavours, and I am definitely going to have to go back before the season is over!

This Japanese egg salad sandwich is really flavourful. They use Japanese milk bread which has a soft and light texture. It's filled with egg salad using Japanese mayo and a hard boiled egg in the centre.

Had a mixed berry jam which was a good amount of tart and sweetness. Scones were excellent, one of the best I've had so far; which admittedly is not a lot. The sandwiches were okay, filling good, but bread a bit stale. The sweets were a small selection of 4 desserts and berries on the side. There was a lot of food for the 'White House Tea' set, well worth the money and the experience. Nice to try, but a bit far to come back again. Will definitely recommend to someone in the area!
