I love fish and chips and these were great! We wanted to find a brunch spot but they all had crazy wait times, so we opted to stop here instead. Service was super friendly and you order at the counter and then pickup your food when its ready. I got the two piece cod and chips which was a decent portion for the price. The fish was well cooked but a little tougher than some other cod I've had. However, their tartar sauce and coleslaw were absolutely fantastic! So perfectly flavored and delicious. We flew into Friday Harbor on a Sunday morning and the town was pretty quiet. I knew I wanted seafood and saw that this place was highly recommended online! The shop itself is pretty small and unassuming, but it smells really good. It's a counter shop so you just place your order and find your own place to sit. We got a 3-piece Cod and Crab Tots; apparently they've been sold out of the Crab Tots for a while, so we were lucky to get them. I thought the Cod was excellent, probably one of the best fish and chips places I've had in the PNW. The batter was nice and light and it was obvious that the fish was freshly fried. The Crab Tots were alright... I didn't taste much crab, mostly potato. The thing I liked the most was the honey cilantro sauce that came with the tots! Came in on a saturday afternoon, and there was no wait. This small shop is very cute, with limited seating, and a small menu. I ordered the 2 peice cod fish and chips for $15. It was so tasty, it came with tartar sauce and coleslaw. The fish was so light, flakey, juicy, and crispy! The tartar sauce complain get the fish perfectly, and the coleslaw was a good touch. We have been coming to the Bait Shop since it opened. The fish is delicious! But the other day we went in and got a couple of orders of their 3 piece cod baskets and the size of the fish was a joke! Just recently found this restaurant so had to give it a try as a non-meat option and a lover of fish and chips. Nice that the location is walkable from the ferry dock. There aren't many seats, so I suspect most of their business ends up being to go. Since we were there in Autumn and the winds were quite cool, we were almost the only people inside as the windows were rolled up and it was definitely chilly and shady. We enjoyed our meal. Surprisingly so. Definitely not cheap -- when did fish and chips get so damn expensive? - but as a non-meat option it hit the spot. We had one 2 piece halibut, one 3 piece halibut, and two drinks that came to more than $50. So for us The Bait Shop is more of a treat than regular. read more

This is a simple counter service fish and chips restaurant on the main downtown street in Friday harbor. With that as our expectation, we loved everything about it. The fish is lightly battered and perfectly fried. We chose the halibut for a couple extra dollars over the cod and have no regrets. The fries were well cooked and seasoned. Not a waterfront shop. Cashier had an attitude. Lack of a la carte options was sad. We wanted clam strips not included as a meal but that's not an option (we asked). You can order chips on the side, but not clam strips without chips. That's just silly. The open air window seating was nice, easy to sit and eat and people watch. My partner and I both went in for their cod fish and chips and were NOT disappointed. I got a two piece and he got a three piece and it ran us about $30. The fish was super light and flaky and tasted really fresh. It is a beer batter which we typically don't prefer - a crispy panko is more our preference- but The Bait Shop batter was very light, and flavorful, not dripping in grease like a lot of beer batter. Their tartar sauce was some of the best I've ever had -I could drink it Cole slaw was basic, not a fave. Fries were very crispy and tasty...we'd do it all again!! I decided not to return to Anacortes earlier and just keep my original ferry reservation back on 9/30/20. Island wandering done, I ended up walking around the main retail area proximate to the ferry terminal. Instead of deli items from a nearby indie grocery store, The Bait Shop caught my eye. Plus there's plenty of outdoor benches to enjoy dining al fresco. Perfect to soak in some late afternoon warmth and do some people watching. Counter person was a bit brusque, but I cut some slack because of the pandemic. So essentially, decide what you want, order/pay, and get out and wait for your order from the sidewalk. The pair of massive fish tacos ($5 each) and ice cold bottled water ($2) was so worth the wait, delicious! I haven't had such tasty fish tacos since previous visits to San Diego. We were stuck in the Friday Harbor Ferry Waiting lot for 1 hour on a Sunday evening and decided to get fish and chips for a tailgate picnic. Spotted this place and took a chance.. After a 10 minute delay, our orders were up, at first glance we noticed that the fish portions were of a peculiar shaped, picture a hamburger patty with breading around it fairly undercooked, not crispy. The accompanying cole slaw was devoid of flavor but cold and fairly crispy. The French fries would have been better if they were from McDonald's. :) But being hungry it was edible but we will not be repeat customers. Upon leaving we noticed that the entry door could use some cleaning around the handle, perhaps if we noticed that initially, we might've taken our tailgate picnic dinner elsewhere. read more

Oh man I loved this place. After a long ferry ride, I just wanted some fried fish. We walked by this place and it didn't look super busy, but had enough people in it to raise an eyebrow. The menu was filled with all of my fried fish desires. One girl was working the counter and it looked like they had one cook in the back from what I could see and when I tell you this man was slinging orders as they came through, he was SLINGING them. They were coming out fresh and hot and if someone had a question about something and the girl at the register was busy, he came out to help answer the question. I got fried shrimp with tartar sauce and fries with a cup of clam chowder. Pretty simple right? NOPE. When I tell you that tartar sauce and clam chowder were flavor bombs I'm not lying. The tartar sauce had a rich garlicky flavor to it, and the clam chowder had so much taste to it. It didn't taste like I was just eating cream, you could taste each veggie in it. The fried shrimp were cooked wonderfully. My partner got the fried cod tacos and loved them. We also got garlic fries and it didn't look like much was on them but they tasted very good. If you guys are hiring, I'll move to Friday Harbor from Philadelphia and happily work for you. I loved this place, I didn't want to leave. read more

If you're looking for something that's simple, no-frills, and just damn GOOD, look no farther than The Bait Shop. While we were on Friday Harbor, we knew we wanted to try seafood. I mean, can you really come to the San Juans without trying it at least once?! The answer is no. The Bait Shop is a walk up counter type of place, so don't expect a sit down restaurant. With the casual atmosphere come cheap prices, which I'm always down for. I went for the Fish Tacos and my husband got the Cod Fish & Chips. He was going to splurge for the halibut, but one of the cashiers said she actually preferred the cod. We also got some clam chowder to share. My fish tacos were good, but they really could've used some sort of spicy sauce or drizzle. That would've skyrocketed the delicious factor into oblivion. My husband enjoyed his fish & chips, and the chowder was pretty good. The onlyyyy thing I wish The Bait Shop had was a highchair. There's a ton of families that come to the island so it's a little weird that they had none... It made dining with our 11 month old pretty difficult.
