The number to call is 512-974-4343. On my visit I brought all kinds of paint, fuel additive, cleaning agents, lubricants, and pesticides. To be honest, I thought they were going to charge me something for this collection of environmentally damaging products, but I offloaded everything onto their carts in a matter of minutes and was on my way. Austin Free-Net (or AFN) is a nonprofit where you can really get to know your community!…read more The center provides computers and digital literacy classes to the underserved, as well as an IT program. There are a number of labs around the city in community centers, the M Station, Trinity, and the ARCH, to name a few. The staff at AFN are amazing!!! They really want you to come in and help them in the way that YOU want to contribute, unlike other volunteer gigs. As a trainer, I supervised labs, taught basic computer navigation skills and helped clients complete resumes, search for jobs and other resources, and apply for state benefits. In the office, I did research, put together events and public relations campaigns, and edited class curriculum. I also lent my hand in the IT dungeon, where all the nerds hang out. I would definitely recommend AFN as a place to volunteer. As the saying goes, if teach a man to use the computer, then he can use it to get a job. Here, you can actually do that.

You read letters for book request, curate a small package of books found in IBPs library and write a letter to send back to each person. This is a really awesome way to provide support to all kinds of humans, who've been through all kinds of challenges. The 30 minute volunteer orientation was thorough and informative! They have volunteer time slots on Sundays and Thursday starting at 6pm! I hope you consider volunteering! I'll definitely be back to volunteer again.

My boyfriend and I found…read moreIBP at an event at Meanwhile Brewing Co maybe a month ago and immediately signed up for an orientation training session. IBP is located in East Austin, housed inside of a church (although IBP is NOT a religiously affiliated organization). They have a huge library built on donations from the community. Every Thursday and Sunday evening, volunteers come to read letters from people incarcerated all over Texas, match them with books, and write handwritten letters back to them. It's truly such a wonderful initiative. People who are incarcerated have the opportunity to request books every 2-3 months and get books sent to them completely free of charge. IBP received around 1500 letters requesting books per month, which is so incredible. If you are someone who enjoys volunteering, this is the place for you! If you don't have the time to volunteer, consider donating to IBP!

Dispute resolution is a resource written into my organization's contracts and it has immensely impacted and benefitted my career. I recommend DRC to anyone who has a dispute that has not progressed to resolution. Try them, it doesn't hurt to seek outside support, resources and tools to assist gaining insight, perspective and collaboratively discuss, determine and reach a desired end goal.

This review is for the Creative Action after school program including the pre K portion and the…read morefull afternoon with children from pre K to 5th grade. This was a huge disappointment. There are 2 teachers for 14 pre K children and maybe 3 teachers for all the total program. With too many kids, my child experienced bullying by both pre K students and older students. There will hitting, name calling and pushing that happened. The staff didn't do anything about it, write up a report or inform me this was going on. My kid told me everyday that boys were hitting him and calling him names :( The expectation is the children sit and color or sit and do a project for most of the afternoon. This is fine if a child is older but very hard for younger kids. Instead of thinking of creative ways to work with the younger children, they just kept telling my child to "sit" and that "my child should listen to them". The staff all have art backgrounds, no necessarily childcare backgrounds. They are teaching the pre K kids about "imagination". My child now tell me that "I don't like imagination". Between there being too many kids, the bullying, and the sitting, my child kept escaping. The teachers weren't paying attention and had trouble finding him and another kid. They had both either hid in the bathroom or left the building. This happened 3 times in 3 weeks (that I was told about) and probably more. Needless to say after a month we have pulled our child from the program. I would not recommend this program for younger kids. Wait until they are older, show interest in art and can defend themselves.

I took my 5 month old to his first baby music class at creative action today, and we both loved it…read more Miss Carrie is a great teacher: lots of energy and musical talent. She sang about eight songs using a range of instruments (ukelele, drums, jingle Bells, maraccas) and her CD player. This is a high quality, donation-based class for newborns to five year olds, offered most Saturday mornings during the year. I'm so glad it's in my neighbourhood. Highly recommended! There's also a movement class for toddlers (2 to 5 year olds).
