Besides the food being quite average, the management can use a lot of help! Things got off to a rocky start. My friend had tried calling in for reservations a few days ago, but was told Havana doesn't take reservations. OK, no problem. We arrive at 7:30PM hoping to get a table, but there were no tables to accommodate our group of 8. However, we did notice a table for 10 people with a reserve sign on it. Strange, we thought they didn't take reservations! Turns out, this party knew the owner and was able to have the privilege of not waiting while we froze our butts off outside. By the way, this table sat empty for half hour. Not cool. As we waited for reservations, we asked if we can sit at the bar. No, it was full. OK, how about we sit outside and just order drinks until a table opens up inside and we'll just move inside? NOPE. We were told once we sit down outside, they can't move us inside. Already at this point I'm getting annoyed, but since it was too much of a hassle to drive somewhere else, we decided to wait it out. Finally the bar area opened up and we sat there to have some snacks and drinks. Another half hour later, we finally get a seat and quickly decided to order. Truffle Fries - good amount of truffle on crunchy fries and was great snack Mushroom Risotto - rich and creamy with goat cheese, but I felt it can use a tiny bit more mushrooms Mussels Havana - cooked with chorizo and flavorful Ravioli - could be more balanced, felt it was too sour, but the pasta was cooked right Jambalaya - incredibly salty and most of us only had 2 bites max The bartender and our server were friendly, but I think my mood was already shot. I would have given this place 2 stars, but because of this experience, I can only give it 1 star. I decided to try this place duo to so many good reviews from elite members and I totally agree with them. This is a great choice for having brunch around commercial drive or even downtown Vancouver since it is not far. They have a menu with a fair amount of choices including tapas, tacos, eggs Benedict, enchilada, pasta, salads etc. All the dishes that we saw coming from the kitchen looked delicious and well presented. I had a very good crab benny. The crab cake that came in this dish was very tasty! As dessert, I tried white and dark mousse and tres leches with coconut flakes. Both were delicious as well. Ironically named after a Cuban socialist city, Havana is the high end "gallery/restaurant" on Commercial Drive with prices that would make even Fidel raise an eyebrow. Typically packed full of overdressed couples looking to be seen holding hands on an upscale outdoor deck, Havana makes fancy sounding dishes that involve things like brie, and bean stalks. Good for people who want to believe that they are enjoying the finer things in life, Havana does make admittedly delicious food, but it's as though they know it and it has gone to their head. Worth perusing are the variety of unnecessarily elaborate drinks that women seem to enjoy so much. The cream of the crap, Havana's is pretentious, expensive, and full of hippies who decided that they would finally start spending some of their hard earned inherited wealth. Havana is a Latin inspired restaurant on "The Drive". I have actually been coming here for years now when I'm in the area. Brunch is always interesting and tasty. They have changed the items and menu over the years which is a good thing as I alway like some variety. This time I had the steak and eggs. The steak was sous vide to a perfect medium to medium rare and then finished on the grill for some nice char. Chimichurri on top was a great compliment. The eggs were poached soft and a dollop of a cream sauce reminiscent of hollandaise. The crispy plantain chips and patacones (smashed and fried plantains my fav) were excellent. My only complaint was the portion size was a little small (for me at least as I'm a big eater lol), but still satisfying. Great place for a Latin twist brunch! read more

Havana, oh Havana! I guess we aren't in Cuba anymore...sadly. Havana is and remains one of the main attractions on Commercial Drive due in large part to its outdoor patio and prime location. There are few things I find more entertaining and amusing than people watching here. The big pitchers of sangria are worth the price at $22 per, but I feel that the sangria is a tad weak and too fruity relative to the alcohol. I was moderately impressed by the food. I have tried many of the appetizers(somehow, I have yet to eat an entree here) from the mac&cheese, truffle fries, pico de gallo to the calamari and they are stellar. However, I still feel everything is ever so slightly overpriced. This is a fun place to come with friends for the atmosphere, appetizers, drinks and to experience the drive. read more

Earlier this year, I travelled to NYC and had the pleasure of dining at two Cuban themed restaurants, one was upscale and one was a "dive" diner. Both were exceptional. So between the "old" Commercial Drive Havana and the NYC experiences, I long anticipated the opening of "new" Havana-Commercial Drive thinking it would advance the concept and to truly "bring it". This especially, knowing the talent involved in the re-launch, seriously why would anyone think anything less? Once a Commercial Drive staple, "old" Havana had flavour, spice, atmosphere and authenticity. Yes, it began to feel exhausted and "burnt out" before the ownership change, it happens. New Havana is a glaring caricature of it's previous incarnation specifically and of Cuban food more generally (insert sad emoji). Why would they do this? Don't answer that question, we know why. So that's the reason why I write this review. Geez the prices: for instance the $10 corn on the cob. Sure it has some curiously tasty frills that someone (not me) could try to justify charging that much. But it was lukewarm. Honestly, I had better corn at the pumpkin patch roaster where we self-served the butter, and at less than half the price. I ate the Havana corn (cuz it was my first meal after a long, long day) and after I kept whining about the price, they took it off the bill...so they definitely cared, which is why I have and will be back. Second visit, I scoured the menu for what felt like an hour and ended up ordering a trio of sides: 1) white beans - that approached a pleasing flavour but the beans were cracked and dry, reminding me of various bean dishes I've made for dinner that I heat up as leftovers for lunch the day after. 2) a salad, which was tasty, crisp and nice, the highlight actually, five stars for the salad, and 3) squid-inked rice, squid inked food is all the rage these days, sadly this version was undercooked, dry, crunchy; that was three side for a total of $24. That's what you get when you create a meal from side dishes, I guess. It's difficult to avoid comparing the "new" ambience with the previous. "New" Havana has the all the feels of stone cold gentrification and cultural appropriation. Listen, I will go back (if they'll let me after this review) however, Commercial Drive deserves a whole lot better. Go back to the drawing board Havana...please. read more

Havana has one of the best patios in the city. It's always drenched in sunlight, has a ton of space (although it's always packed!), and being opposite the park gives great people watching opportunities. Plus it's heated for those colder days! I love Havana for a late brunch, as it's the best time I've found to snag a patio spot. Plus then you can order a pitcher of sangria or mojitos and enjoy the afternoon! The drinks are really great, and the variety of flavours for the sangria and mojitos means I've tried a different one almost every visit! I do wish the beer list were better, as I rarely feel excited when I ask what their seasonal is. My favourite dish is the huevos, no question. I've also recently discovered that they're happy to switch out the third egg for some guacamole, which totally turns it up to 11! The staff are always friendly and accommodating, which is particularly impressive given the fact that Havana never seems to have a slow time! The food is pretty pricey, but it's consistently well made and very tasty so I can't complain! I had a surprise birthday party here over the weekend, and I just have to give high compliments to the staff for their service. There were quite a few of us, and they were very patient and on top of things (refilling waters, clearing dishes, special requests, etc). This was also my first time having their dinner menu here, and it was enioyable! They offer quite a variety of latin dishes. I had the seafood paella with squid ink, the mussels espana, and an appy that consisted of a cheese dip, with tortillas, and a type of fried dough. Very delicious! No big surprise that Havana is still the hot spot on the drive. Packed to the hilt and spilling out patrons onto the covered outdoor patio too. Had to change my 4 star review to a 1 star because this place's quality has dropped drastically since the renovations. I admit the interior looks nicer. But the food & drinks took a massive dive in both quality and value-for-price. Been here 3 times since the reno, here are my thoughts: DRINKS: half of their tiny drinks list has been "out of stock" on all 3 visits which were spaced out in between months. One drink that I was able to order (I forget the name) came in a tall glass and had a creamy mint green aesthetic. It looked beautiful but tasted awful- like a cup of perfume. FOOD: The "carne" (flank steak) is very over-priced for what you get on the plate. The portion is small, and it's served on top of cold sauteed onions. I asked for mid-rare but the steak arrived cold and well done. My friend is the type of person who returns things to the kitchen and I didn't want to cause a scene, so I ate it with a fake grin and pretended I loved it. I didn't, it was horrible. The octopus from the octopus dish tastes nice, but the portion is TINY! You're essentially paying $20 for beans. My friend ordered the salad which was just boring, lifeless generic greens, nothing special worth justifying a $13 price tag. THE SERVICE: For the most part, the servers are polite but incompetent. Our server seldom ventured to the patio to check on us, but the people sitting across received non-stop service from a different waitress, so we tagged along and gave her our orders and requests. Other visits include receiving food without silverware, failure to refill our water glasses after multiple requests, and waiting 15+ minutes to pay the bill because the entire restaurant was running on one debit machine. THE PRICES: Completely ridiculous. I'm not some scrub who can't afford the prices, trust me, I can handle high prices when it's worth it. But Havana's is no longer worth it. Paying so much money for such small portions of food that are often not cooked properly? No thanks. This place is all fluff and no substance now. MISCELLANEOUS: I love how the menu is in Spanish and none of the servers can understand it. It's hilarious! I ordered the Pastel de Tres Leches, but I asked for the "3 milk cake" (because that's literally what it's translated to in English) and the server had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. On another visit I ordered the Daiquiri de Piña (but I phrased it as the pineapple daiquiri) and again, completely over her head. SUMMARY: After nearly 3 years of dedicated frequency to Havana's, I am officially erasing it from my "go to" list, as well as ceasing to recommend it to my colleagues. Sure, the restaurant before the reno was nothing fancy, but the food was simple, delicious, and reasonably priced. Now it's pretentious and soulless, stripped of all passion. I don't doubt that there are some hard-working people in the kitchen at Havana's, but if you ask me, they're working hard instead of working smart. read more

I came here with a group of friends and we had to wait about 25 minutes for our table which is fine. They don't take reservations for brunch. It took about a half hour to get our food. The truffle garlic fries were pretty good, except a bit pricey for the portion. I tried the chirizo sausage hash and the belgian waffle Benny. It was OK. Nothing to overly rave about. Nobody came around to update us about the food. Only at the end of the meal they let us know that yes we waited so we received complimentary coffee that only half the table ordered. read more

I'm not completely sold on the greatness of their patio, but man, I am a huge ass fan of that crab, shrimp and mango salad I had. It was a perfectly delightful combination of ripe yellow mangoes, peppery arugula leaves, and both balanced out the sea salty tangyness of the crab and shrimp. I don't think I've ever given this much thought to a salad but damn, I could go semi-vegetarian for it and everyone who knows me knows I'm a meat lover through and through. Really not sold on their patio. Good for people watching on the Drive, but it was Italian Fest on the Drive when we were there and the patio just appeared way to crowded for me to ever want to put my feet up to a glass of mojito. Of course, at some point during our visit, I downed more than half a pitcher of mango mojito, which resulted in me picking off BH's Tito Puente sandwich. Must be a Filipino thing, how mango stimulates my appetite. The sandwich was good too, but none of the flavours really astounded. Nice touch naming a sandwich after one of my all-time favorite latin jazz artists, but the flavours were too muted. Service was quite pleasant and attentive despite the busyness. The bartender here definitely makes some mean mojitos. But as much as I fell in love with the salad, I found nothing interesting in the "Cuban" sense on the menu. You'll find a sprinkling of Cuban menu items but otherwise, a lot of seemingly overpriced pastas and sandwiches. Would have been great to find more actual Cuban items, that would make it a destination meal for me. Go if you want something different for chilling out. Their drink prices are more than reasonable and they make it well. As it stands, cause I`m more of an eater than a drinker, I can think of better patios in the city with to drool-for menu items than Havana. read more

Saturday night, had pizza on the brain when I ran across this spot. Latin food in Vancouver? Staff dressed for Halloween?? Why not?!?!? ...Walking in was the best decision of the night! Eating solo I sat at the bar; JR hooked me up with a couple of lagers on draft while I perused the menu full of great choices. The mix of salsa, regatón, and up beat Latin music + the beer helped me select the Latin burger with a side of mariquitas. Burger was great! It's a mix of chorizo and beef which gives it a nice little kick. The mariquitas we're fried to perfection and the accompanying sauce was delicious! Now my man JR introduced me and some of my bar mates to Verdita Shot which the menu describes as: "altos tequila, freshly juiced house chaser". What the menu doesn't tell you is that chaser is the BOMB! It's sweet, spicy, and addictive! Made a couple more rounds too hard to resist.... Factor in the great conversations I had at the bar and this place made my Saturday night in Vancouver! My partner and I went here last night and learned that Havana is now under a new management (same company that runs Belgrade Kitchen and Postmark Brewery). The menu looks completely different than the old Havana, but to play it safe, we decided to order the Paella Negra, our old favourite. Unfortunately the Paella was very bland and lacking in depth. It really needed more onions, garlic, seafood stock, salt, pepper, anything. The kitchen decided to take out the chorizo from the dish to be safe as my partner is gluten-sensitive. Good initiative, but we should've been asked about this first (we were only told that they're going to take the breadcrumbs that usually are on top of the paella off). But still, even if the chorizo flavour was missing, it shouldn't taste that bland if a healthy amount of seasoning, onions, garlic etc were added. All this for $25 before taxes. Nevertheless, the wonderful, attentive service saved the night. Kate, our server, was very friendly and knowledgeable, and so were the other Front of The House staff members we met. We wouldn't be in a hurry to come back anytime soon. I am hoping that the new management figures out these bumps (and that they'll stop playing Top 40s music on a Saturday night...) as Havana is a well-loved institution in the neighbourhood. read more

I love this place! They serve my favourite chicken and waffles because the chicken is super crispy and the jam is freshly made. Waffles are not soggy and I love sitting on the patio because it has heater lamps and is a great place to people watch! Service is impeccable when they're not too busy, very attentive. And they never rush you out even if you have finished your meal and just want to stay and chat with your friends. My friend is in Vancouver visiting. We were looking for a place with good seafood, good drinks and a good patio for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. We walked down commercial looking for a place. The patio here caught our eyes and the fact that their menus had mussels was an added bonus! We got a pitcher of mojito and sat on the patio (great people watching place!) We ordered the mussels but they were already out! I wish they would have they made a note on the menu or something because that was the main reason we went there. Even though there were no more mussels, we were able to find a few things on the menu that were good replacements! We got the Crudo, Garlic chili prawns and tuna tacos. The food did not disappoint! The Crudo was like sashimi, it came with pita type chips. It was tuna with lemon and jalapeño. It was so good! The garlic chili prawns were pretty spicy but amazing! The tuna in the tuna tacos was almost the same as the Crudo but still very good. The mojito's we got, we had to ask for more simple syrup as there was not enough for our taste in the pitcher. It was very bitter when we first got it. Also, not very minty. The mint needs to be ground up a bit more. The service was very good. Very prompt and our food came out fast. Our server was very nice and checked up on us frequently to make sure we were all set. The prices are a little expensive but that was to be expected. I gave four stars and not five because I was a little irritated they did not note on their menu or tell us when they sat us what they were out of. I am however, glad we stayed because the food was very good. I also think the mojito's could use more simple syrup and the leaves need a bit more grinding when making the mojito's because you could hardly taste the mint. So many spots along Commercial Dr, you can't rally go wrong anywhere, but you can go very right at Havana. First time for a meal there and I was really impressed. Wasn't a huge fan of the soup even though my expectations were high when I heard "potato & arugula." Pretty salty and lots of spice, just not really a distinguishable flavor. My hunger got me through it though, and I'm pretty sure I was sweating by the end of it. The entree was fantastic and Havana makes its big comeback on this serving. Had the chicken tacos and they were awesome. Great jerk flavor on the chicken, fresh pico de gallo salsa, fresh crispy cabbage, and a perfect marriage with the chimmichurri, guac, and tomatoes. There were 2 on the plate, but I probably could have eaten 10. The best part is that they weren't super messy and I wasn't toweling sauce off when I was done. Lots of red beans & rice on the plate for filler, but they had good flavor as well. Havana is a place I would definitely go back to, even though it was tough to find parking. read more

Rudely refused entry as I am allergic to hand sanitizer. I don't understand why businesses are making up their own rules. There is NO guidance in BC for refusing customers who can't wear these unknown substances. Guidance states that customers can be encouraged to use it. Many of these substances are toxic and there is no way of knowing what's in them. Even basics like rubbing alcohol contain perfumes. I politely handed back the sopping wet menu (I imagine covered in hand sanitizer) and said ok. It's really insulting though to be treated as though one is not an adult, well responsible for keeping their hands clean and washing before meals. Proper communication is also missing when the greeter is masked up to the eyeballs, looking sinister, not welcoming of trade. Have to admit I used to like this place and was shocked at how unwelcoming they have become. Please review the guidances provided by the province though none of them are very consistent and stop turning away customers. The so-called pandemic was over before it really started. One of my favorite's on the drive, a few years back. Sit out on the patio on a nice Vancouver summery day with a pitcher of sangria. There's nothing really cuban about this restaurant, food wise. Just a few select items. They need to bring in a cuban pressed sandwich at least. It tends to get super busy, ask for anything that you need as soon as your waitress drops off your food, especially in a big crowd, or you won't see her for awhile. My favorites are the tito puente, black bean chili, sweet potato fries and the buttermilk fried chicken. Pretty good food, service is unpredictable. read more

We are on the hunt for paella in Vancouver, decided to give Havana a try. A long with the paella, we ordered the corn bread to start, and the Carribbean fried chicken. The corn bread came with a chilli butter, it was very good! Unfortunately, that was the best part of our meal. The paella was alright, but it was more of a risotto than paella. The chicken was very dry and didn't have much flavour, and the mashed potatoes that came with it were equally flavourless. Havana does have a lot of positive reviews so maybe we just ordered the wrong items. The service was good and prices are fair given the big portions. read more

I had the Havana brunch bowl and it was better than I expected. It was light, refreshing, and full of flavour- I'd come back just for that. The French toast was soft and moist. Recommended for someone with a sweet tooth. However, was not a fan of the tostones. I thought I'd like it because I love plantains, but the flavour fell short for everyone at the table. The servers were great with a friendly face! The portions here are massive and the price was average but not expensive. I ordered the jambalaya ($19) which was cooked just right and loaded with toppings! A pitcher of sangria cost $27 which is slightly above average but was not water down - delicious to have! Popular eatery on commercial drive the food was ok, but definitely not authentic. Service was ok as well. The servers are nice but as they are so busy and the place is usually full they were a Lottie slow on service and forgot dessert until they were prompted. read more

The vibe of Havana's is great but the food presentation is TERRIBLE! Maybe the drinks/atmosphere as opposed to the food is what they're known for? My friends and I all ordered brunch dishes. My brunch burger came with what looked like half eaten fries. It was so strange-just maybe 10 fries altogether. All our food looked unappealing, like something we would whip up at home and chuck on a plate. The taste of the food was good, but nothing memorable. They truly need to up their game with the food portions and presentation. Almost $20 for a brunch burger with what looked like half eaten meal was off putting to say the least. read more

Stay away from the Mojito Happy Hour! I had 4 and I probably had 1 oz in total. Watered down???? For 5 bucks thought it was a good deal but seriously??? Owner contacted me stating the drinks had a full OZ. I'm pretty certain the barkeep uses a different measuring device. They offered to serve me one on the house. I'll revisit review after. read more

The patio here is one of the most iconic scenes on the Drive. Havana is a great building with a great west facing patio, and has good food. Personally though, I find the menu a bit limiting and overpriced for what you get, so I guess you are paying a bit for the scene,.. of being seen. Don't get me wrong, the brunches are decent and the chefs know what they are doing with flavour (unlike the train-wreck next door: Fets), but like $14 for a regular breakfast with good seasoning? I downgrade it a star for the price, but reluctantly, it is a nice place to sit on a patio on a sunny day (yet they have heat lamps). read more

We heard this was being renovated under new ownership. It's a little ritzier from before but the coloured yarn spun chairs on the patio and delicious gin and food made us want to come back more often. The portions were larger than we expected. We tried the rib eye steak, cauliflower with a spicy kick and frites, of course the squid ink paella with chorizo and were happy to get to take home a quarter of it. Next time, two appies and two mains will be just right. read more

Havana is such a nice place with a cosy atmosphere:) the rustic vintage interior gives it a very cool vibe. I've ordered the veggie benny for breakfast every time and it is amazing! If you are a chai tea person you should also try their chai tea latte that comes in a cup that more of a bowl size than cup size:) read more
