After years of denying herself, my mother has learned that she loves Indian food. We have the food and employees of Haveli India to thank for this. Like most people, mom had a bad experience that kept her from trying anything that closely resembled Indian food. I'm glad to say that is all in the past now. The restaurant is in a large, old and beautiful building with an interior to match. There is a large parking lot (on a hill), with handicap parking closer to the entry. They also offer additional parking for events/parties. They are open Monday through Sunday for lunch and dinner and offer an all you can eat lunch buffet Friday through Sunday. I would highly recommend the buffet, if this is your first time trying Indian food. There are dishes with meat and also quite a few vegetarian options. The staff is there to answer any questions that you may have. It's best to sample a little of everything to find the dishes that you like the best. In my case, there wasn't a dish that I didn't like. My son loved the naan and roti, the breaded and fried veggies, the spinach dish and the curry. We will definitely be visiting again! read more

Heard from everyone how good the food was here so I had to try it for myself. I was used to the quality of Indian food in NYC so I didn't have high expectations. But it was as good if not better than the best I've had in the big city. Had my usual favorite Lamb Saag. Very good and spiced exactly as I ordered. Great service. The main courses came out a little too soon after the appetizers, but that's not a big deal to me. If I can make one criticism, it was the lighting. Some bulbs way too bright (old bluish fluorescent types). It would be a very romantic "date" restaurant if they dimmed the lights about 50%. Otherwise, A+. read more

I was invited to a working lunch by a business acquaintance. He chose this restaurant, and since I wasn't familiar with Indian food, I took this opportunity to expand my palate a bit. As I entered, one of the servers came right over told me I was expected. He showed me to a private room, where my colleague was already waiting. White tablecloths and napkins, sparkling silverware were already set at the table. We got right to business, and in a short time, was joined by the owner, Krishna, who welcomed me to his restaurant, and asked for our order. Since I wasn't familiar with Indian food, I suggested that he decide for me, and, with a smile and the agreement of my colleague, he headed towards the kitchen. It wasn't long before he returned with our first course--a specially-made samosa, filled with potatoes, peas, chick peas, bread, and yogurt. I took a small taste, and then filled my plate. After a few bites, some of the more subtle flavors took over, like tamarind and cumin. He also brought me a mango lassie--the classic yogurt drink. It had a good balance of sweet and tart, without the mango flavor overpowering the drink. I barely scraped the last of the samosa from its dish when Krishna and a server brought out the main event: a selection from the kitchen that spanned the menu: Kadai Paneer, Indian cheese in a tomato sauce, Dal Makkani, lentils in a spicy sauce, fish in a Goan curry sauce, and a classic Chicken Tikka Masala. Along with this, a large dish of basmati rice and garlic naan. My colleague and I dug right in, and I was thankful that Krishna tailored everything for my Western palate, instead of that of my Nepali colleague. I can't begin to describe how well everything complemented one another, with each dish having its own unique qualities, but not undermining or overpowering the other selections. Conversation stopped while we ate, and there was very little left when we were done. I passed on dessert--I had a dinner meeting three hours later and needed to save some room for that. While my colleague picked up the check, I peeked at the menu, and found the prices to be quite reasonable, and judging from this lunch, portions are more than enough. While I didn't partake, they have a well-stocked bar and a decent wine list. Again, a restaurant that I would go back to often, if it weren't so far away from me. I have promised Bestie that we will have to go here for dinner some night. I highly recommend Haveli Indian to anyone looking for a phenomenal meal that's different from the usual options. read more

We had a great meal here recently. Service was very friendly and prompt and you get a lot of food for the price, a great value! I had the chicken chettinad ($13) and the curry sauce was delicious. Loved the subtle coconut flavor. My husband had the baigan masala ($12) and really enjoyed it as well. It's basically baigan bhartha (one of our favs), but a stuffed eggplant version. I came here for the lunch buffet on a Saturday, and wow, what a great deal! For just $10 per person, there's a wide assortment of appetizers, about 6-7 vegetarian dishes, about 5 meat dishes, and 3 desserts. I tried a little bit of everything, and it was all fresh and delicious. My favorites were the lamb curry (lamb at a $10 buffet!) and the aloo gobi, as well as the fresh naan that was delivered straight to our table. Both desserts on offer (kheer and gulab jamun) were great as well, and not as cloyingly sweet as they are at other Indian restaurants. The restaurant is, bizarrely enough, in an old house with colonial decorations. It works though, and lends the place a nice atmosphere. Service was great, and the buffet seemed to be well-stocked throughout the two and a half hours we were there. Thali in New Haven has my favorite buffet in the state and Utsav in Vernon has a fine one as well, but Haveli is up there among the best in terms of quality, and is much cheaper as well. I was dining with my Indian friend who said that this is her parents' favorite place, so you know it's authentic! If you're in central CT, this is the place to go for delicious Indian food for a really reasonable price. read more

Ordered take out on a Saturday and it was still pretty good! Mattar (peas) paneer, chicken tikka masala, lamb biryani, lamb saag and 2 bread combinations. We should've just ordered one because it was seriously a lot for 6 people, there's no such thing as too much naan, right? Mattar paneer and chicken tikka masala were most flavorful, I always order that I'm here. Their desserts are great too!!! Lamb biryani was a little on the dry side today. If you can make it for the buffet that's optimal - try more dishes at a better price. These chaps are from Nepal but they make some of the best Indian food I've had in the tri state area. Seriously. Finally made it to Haveli for the lunch buffet today. We arrived right around noon and the lot was already half full. The restautant was quite busy, but we were seated right away. A server brought over water within a minute or so of us sitting down, asked us if we wanted any other drinks and invite us to enjoy the buffet. I ordered a mango lassi and it was yummy!! From what I understand, the buffet selection rotates from week to week. I was extremely sad that there were no samosas today. But then I figured the point of going to the buffet was to try new things, not stick with my old favorites. Most of the items at the buffet were labeled, except the sauces and a tray of two different deep fried items. They had papadum, cucumber salad, dal soup, the 2 deep fried items, lemon rice and basmati rice, saag paneer, aloo mattar, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, chicken curry, lamb curry, vegetable curry, and a couple other entree items I can't remember. For dessert, they had fruit, kheer and galub jamun. They also gave us a basket of warm soft naan at our table. The aloo matar was my favorite dish, I could have eaten a whole bowl of it with some naan. I only wish it had been a bit spicier. The chicken tikka masala and chicken curry were solid, and I liked the lemon rice over the plain basmati, as it was something different and nice for the rice to have some flavor of its own. The only thing I didn't love was the tandoori chicken as it was overcooked and very dry. The selection at the buffet was good, the food was hot and fresh, and was kept fully stocked while we were there. They kept our water glasses filled and took used plates away quickly. Really Delicious! View of the pond is great. The location is quaint, in the middle of a street at the foot of a mountain. Went with friends and enjoyed it very much. Have to say it was so far the best indian food I ever had. They always ask you for refills and they gave us 2 appetizers and 2 desserts on the house. The quality of the food is their biggest asset. I like the weird-converted house that the restaurant is in. It makes me want to know what or for whom the building was originally built for. I had chicken korma and requested medium spicy, my husband had the chicken Tikka Masala and asked for it to be hot. I think they did a good job with his dish because it was tomato-y and creamy and decently spicy. My chicken Korma was delicious and I like their garlic naan. I ordered a half-carafe of the Malbec and it tasted sour. I drank it anyway. We had met my good friend and her husband for dinner on this particular occasion and they are regulars, both dine-in and take-out, so I'm not sure if everyone gets the kind of service we did. They friendly but a little disjointed; not as prompt as I'd like with getting our drink orders and we had to wait longer than usual for the entrees to appear. They came over to our table apologizing for the wait with a special stuffed naan that had orange coconut shavings in it and little sprinkle-things that tasted like licorice (I'm sure there's a proper Indian name for this but I don't know it) the bread was yummy and I appreciated their sentiment. There was a birthday party going on in the banquet room so the were probably pretty busy with that. At the end of the meal they gave us each a Gulab Jamun which is like a donut hole in syrup. I do think they need to invest in re-doing their ladies room. (I can't speak for the men's room) The floors are dingy and the stalls are old and battered. What up, Connecticuters? This place is *not* good, *not* authentic, and not even well run as a restaurant. What's up with all the excellent reviews? I had time for one meal in your town, and the Middletown Yelpers really mislead me here. I dined by myself and, because of slow service -- the owner once admitting to me that he had forgotten about me -- I was there for nearly 2 hours. I ordered a thali dinner, that was to have choice in soup and dessert. I ordered my soup of choice, and the server literally laughed and said "We don't have that." I ordered my *dessert* of choice, and the server again laughed and said "We don't have that." The soup they did have was thin gruel. My various dishes in the thali plate were bland, if not downright unpleasant. They had been reheated and were not fresh. I swear the samosa had come from a box of frozen samosa. Everything was bad. Yick. Entering the building is atmospheric, and made for a good Facebook picture. At least I got that out of the experience. read more

Got lamb samosas, garlic naan, chicken vindaloo, chicken madras, and bhindi masala. All flavors were delicious and just what I needed today, plus they'll make great leftovers! Tried Haveli yesterday for the first time. Found it to be very good. They do ask your spice level which is hard to decipher on your first visit. We went with medium. Which was really mild everywhere else. If you are looking for spicy as for it to be spicy. The food was well prepared and tasty We both got the non-vegetarian Thali dinner which was a LOT of food. I just had the rest for lunch and still have some for a snack. Lol The staff was very courteous and efficient. A bit of a language barrier with our server but seems to be an isolated issue. He was pleasant. The atmosphere was interesting. Not being a local I'm not sure what was here before but it's an interesting older building and reads like an old style English Pub. It was clean, a bit dated, showed its age in some spots..... But, don't we all? I would recommend this restaurant and already have and will return. Meh. Food is average at most but good service staff. Came here for the lunch buffet ($9.95) on a Friday. There were about 9 entrees in addition to the salad bar, fruits and desserts. Entrees included stuff like tikka masala, chili chicken, chicken curry, goat curry, dal makhni etc. Nothing different or fancy. There was also a dal soup at the salad bar but unfortunately it was really salty. The same can be said for most of the food items - salt overload. The only entree that I really liked was the tandoori chicken , which was tender and juicy despite other reviews. Although Haveli is cheaper than other Indian buffets around, I think that it's worth paying the extra few dollars for better quality food elsewhere. read more

Never heard of this place before and was quiet when we got there, but it was so great . They offer a 10% discount for college students!! I'm vegan & had some of the vegetarian options (chana masala, roti, baigan masala and vegetable biryani) -- all made mild (they asked) and delicious. Been here several times in the service and food have always been consistently good. As was our most recent visit until we noticed a roach walking along one of our empty plates. the woman in charge said when I brought it to her and she doesn't know how that happened. I suggested that it was from insufficient or non-existent pest control. She acted asthough this was an ordinary event and without asking packaged our leftovers to go.
