Fun social vibe at this bar with happy hour specials in Capitol Hill. We sat at the large table in the back and had a great time together. Unfortunately, our server was tough to communicate with. She made us feel uneasy and was unpleasant with her communications. I recommend trying the crab dip with pretzels, it's a unique dish here. The french fries were nothing special. As many times as I've passed by this place for over 15 years, this was my first time dining here. I wasn't disappointed. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, very subdued. Our server (she was great but unfortunately I cannot recall her name) was very polite and knowledgeable about the menu. She made it a point to check on us during our dining experience. The food....it was a LOT! The appetizers are shareables and can be meals themselves. I really also enjoy the cocktail that I had (Tennessee Red Bird). What I really liked about it was the consistency. I ordered a second drink and it tasted exactly the same as the first one. A lot of bartenders don't make the drinks exactly the same but this one was definitely on point. We went on a Sunday and it was not crowded but I definitely look forward to going back. read more

This will be my last visit to Hawk n Dove after 43 years of visits. They have completely ruined this place. Let's start with the menu. Nothing on it. Extremely limited, I think McDonalds has more choices. It's basically sandwiches only. Now the liquor. Hell they have even limited that. Talk about cheap. They once had a great selection but now limited. No Makers Mark. No Four Roses. It's basically Jack and Old Forester. Just weak. Then I was told by the bartender that I've known for around 15 years that I had inside my credit card upfront because management is watching. I don't mind doing that, but I have earned trust from the bar staff over these 43 years. But no this ownership group doesn't give a rats ass about relationships evidently. Just rubbed me the wrong way. Also the AC is always out. And "we are working on it" is played out. And he this. 2 blocks from the US Capitol and they close at 9 and 8 on Saturdays. Again, my last visit here. I've been through all the fires and the remodel. I remember the pool table in the back and the poles oddly placed in the middle of some of the rooms they used to have. They had me reschedule the first date that we agreed upon and then they cancelled the second date that we agreed upon just hours before I was to be there. While I did not pay for food from the restaurant, I think the exchange and wasted time was enough to taint any future experience. I still don't know how the food is, but if it is anything like the management that was in charge of this exchange, I will be just fine passing it by in the future. It is a passable place to eat or drink if nothing else is open nearby. 1. No reservation needed It has a huge bar and you just help yourself to a table. 2. Food: 2-3 starts at best takes 30 mins or so for just a simple burger to come out despite a slow day and didn't even taste good. It is edible alright! 3. Drinks: just get the tap or whatever is already come packaged. Don't get any cocktails. They are not good. 4. Service: straight up, don't care but I will get your order attitude. Turns out after 30 minutes or so we asked where's our food. After I ordered the soup time passes and the waitress comes to tell me there is no more soup, so I ordered a house salad. The guy that seated us replied that the waitress never put our order in. The same guy said he couldn't put our order in so that we would have it within 30-45 minutes. The only mole at Hawk 'n' Dove is going to be guacamole. Even if you're a floater, they have a soup of the day! Every handler there wears plastic gloves to prevent cross-contamination and the honey trap will only be all over your chicken tenders. I'm telling you, even if you're burned, the food won't be. this is the type of place you go for the vibe, not the meal - the inside of this restaurant plays well into the political, historical vibe of Capitol Hill, the old sign from the 50s (I think) is hanging on the wall and the rustic set up makes you wonder what political schemes have been devised at your table - the black and blue salad was the most intriguing salad choice, the meat was plentiful, thick, and chewy. - the dressing was quite boring and didn't compliment the blue cheese, something a dressing should do when paired with such a pungent topping - the chicken pot pie was loved and a rare menu find for sure. it came out steaming but the side piece of bread was a strange addition to an already bread heavy dish - not memorable but I see why it exists. lol. read more

I've been a customer of the Hawk 'n' Dove since 1974 when I lived in Washington DC. The food was great then, and through the years, it's never disappointed me. I've found their burgers to be one of the best in the country. Simple, delicious, and until today, always perfectly cooked. Sadly, rare to medium rare meant nothing to the cook, who served up a medium burger. Despite the flaw, it was still heads and shoulders above the rest. The large cut steak fries with my choice of malt vinegar were outstanding. We ordered the deviled eggs with high expectations, and while good, not extraordinary. My first drink took 30 minutes to come out. After a long day of work given a bar that was rapidly clearing out, this was disappointing to say the least. My friend's martini lacked visual appeal, although that wouldn't even have been noticed had our drinks come out in a timely manner. At $15 a pop on drinks, I expect pretty heavy pours for a dive bar. I love Hawk n Dove's consistency, each time I've been the experience has been worth it. They have a bunch of options for Happy Hour, they changed their menu (plain white in pic) but you still get the most bang for your buck here. On weeknights it's typically packed as it's right off the Hill. Service at the bar is pretty speedy and their seats are comfy. They have patio seating, tables and there's even another bar upstairs (often hosting private events). If you love a good weeknight special, stop by and enjoy yourself. read more
