This was my first time here. The interior is nice and there is a small bench near the entrance where your plus one can wait for you. I did a japanese straightening and haircut with Tim Tatsumi. Even though he had just finished a previous client, he worked tirelessly and patiently with me the entire 4 hours I was there. He is extremely meticulous and makes sure he does every strand carefully. He offered me tea or anything to drink. He took the time to listen to what I wanted and gave his own suggestions as well. Come prepared with a reference photo. My hair felt absolutely amazing after and didn't smell bad unlike other Japanese straightening I have gotten elsewhere. The haircut was really nice as well and was visibly healthier. Even though I went a little past their closing time, he didn't rush me and still listened to me when I wanted to adjust the haircut. Very unprofessional and rude customer service after expressing concerns with result, and a complete waste of $125 coloring service with Mina. I specifically asked for no red tone in hair coloring, but my hair ended up with a red tint under the sun. Also, barely any color difference came out from my original black color -- it basically looks black even after several washes. It's as if she didn't do anything but add a slight red tint, which I specifically asked her not to do. Also, when I brought up my concerns politely, they refused any future client services. How rude and unprofessional. Do NOT come here. They don't listen to your requests at all. It is very confusing and odd that Mina is listed as one of the more expensive directors on the website, as she cannot do her job well. I came here for the head spa and scalp treatment. I paid around $200 including tip. Overall I was not satisfied with the product. The customer service was great but the spa experience itself felt uncomfortable and not the quality I expected. My first issue was that the majority of the service is done on a chair that isn't very comfortable. The chair offers very little foot or leg support so it's really hard to enjoy the experience. The head and scalp massage itself was not very notable. Not enough strength or technique on the massage, and it felt more like I was getting my head scratched. They also do not dry your hair for you at the end of your service so you either walk out with damp hair or they let you blow dry your own hair (which feels bizarre - going into a hair salon and blow drying your own hair). My hair did feel softer by the end of my experience but that alone isn't worth $200 on my opinion. read more

I would give Hayato zero stars if I could. I have been going to Hayato for fifteen plus years for a Japanese straightener. They have high staff turnover at the salon and the owner no longer seems to be present. The photo below reflects my last two Japanese straighteners at Hayato. The straight hair on the end represents a good straightener performed by a stylist who has since left the salon. The top portion of my hair reprents a Japanese straightener performed by Luis. My hair is still very curly. I sent a polite e-mail asking for my hair to be fixed by a more experienced stylist. The manager refused and only offered to have Luis fix my hair. I did not want to risk having harmful chemicals being applied to my hair a second time and getting a second bad result. The manager seems to be more concerned about protecting the sylist than Hayato's brand. I had to go to Yo-C salon to get my hair fixed and lost approximately $500. Just to be fair, Louis did give me a good haircut. I wanted him to keep the $100 tip. The salon also declined to give me $400 back for the straightener. In addition, I did wait a month to call to get my hair fixed as I know that harmful chemical could not be reapplied before 30 days. Perhaps this was a mistake. I would hope that in the future, Hayato would take more pride in the end result. They have lost a loyal client. read more

I have come to Hayato twice -- once for a digital perm and once for a balayage. Both times I had Hide as my stylist. I can't recommend Hide enough. He is careful, detail oriented, and very gentle with my hair. Both times I got my treatments, I was warned by friends that the process would damage my hair. However, when Hide does these treatments, I feel almost no difference in the strength and quality of my hair afterwards. It's clear that he's extremely experienced, and I really appreciate that he will work with you to find a hairstyle or color that looks great on you. My favorite part of each experience is the scalp massage he gives -- it's honestly more relaxing than massages I've gotten from professional masseuses. The environment at Hayato is really soothing. There's soft jazz playing in the background, and everybody talks in gentle, quiet voices. It's a far cry from the shouting and gossip I'm used to hearing at other salons. While Hayato may be more expensive than some other salons in the city, you get what you pay for, and what you're paying for at Hayato is a relaxing environment, knowledgeable stylists, and treatments that look great while keeping your hair healthy. I will keep coming back to Hayato as long as I'm in NYC :) read more

I've been having the same people cut my hair for 10+ years now, but decided it was time for a change and came to Hayato for something new. It was a great choice! The service was fantastic, and I got a great scalp massage while I was at the wash bowl. I also really liked that they put a little eye mask on you while you have your hair washed, so you can skip the awkward eye contact and conversation while someone is washing your hair (or risk falling asleep by closing your eyed). I went with Hide for this appointment and he did not disappoint! He asked me what I wanted, and I told him that I actually wasn't sure and was looking for something shorter in a new style that he thought would be flattering. I was a little worried with letting Hide take the wheel, but in the end I think this is the most satisfied I've been with a haircut in a while (though it's certainly at a completely different price range than all the others I've had). Haruka is a veritable magician, y'all!!! I jumped on the japanese straightening / thermal reconditioning bandwagon about 15 years ago with great success at one of those assembly line places in Flushing that I went to twice. Fast forward to 2014 and I had a disastrous experience in VA by a guy who clearly had no idea. Having learned my lesson but also being determined to make my unruly mane maintenance free with a dreaded return to work approaching, I did my due diligence. Hayato was listed in an article as one of four recommended salons for hair straightening in NYC. After reading tons of reviews, I asked them a bunch of questions via Yelp message (great response time!) and booked an appointment with Haruka. I kid you not, I could tell she was a super pro from the off. Haruka is a killer perfectionist and has insane attention to detail - and I'm speaking as a crazy type A myself. She first examined my hair to make sure it was of the right type to undergo the process. After confirming it was, she got going and I was actually done in three hours even after adding an Olaplex treatment! I never once felt like I wasn't in expert hands. In fact, not only was the process the best thermal reconditioning experience I ever had from a customer service perspective, but my hair turned out...A-MA-ZING! I went from beast to beauty all thanks to Haruka (seriously, check out those photos!). I decided to take a big risk and check out this place and get a balayage and haircut. When I entered the salon I was immediately greeted by the person at the front desk and then taken to my hair stylist, who had a cute note on my table welcoming me. Unfortunately I was not fully satisfied with the final product. The hair cut I liked, but the balayage was not at all what I had asked for. I had shown the stylist a picture of a brunette balayage, but instead the final product looks way too blond and not at all what I had showed him. My stylist Luis was nice and friendly but he did not achieve what I wanted. I was also excited about the neck massage part that is supposed to be included in the services, and I noticed other stylists giving a massage to their clients, but unfortunately my stylist Luis did not provide me with a neck massage. I did a double process with Zah Zah for platinum blonde hair, and my hair now is orange on the second day with visible black blotches everywhere. Called front desk a couple of times. They made customers sign that they are not responsible for how the hair turns out which is lack of responsibility. They used to guarantee satisfaction by promising redo in two weeks. First time here and decided to go with the owner Hayato which was a MISTAKE! I have not gotten my hair professional dyed in a very long time (4-5 years), but I decided I wanted to go lighter. My hair is naturally black but I dye my hair with black box dye every now and then to cover my grays. I researched a few places and decided to give Hayato a try because of the good reviews I read on Yelp and because they have experience with handling asian hair. Also, their website says "We Aim To Give You The Best "Simple And Natural" Style" and that's what I was going for. I called the salon to book an appt for a balayage and also to double check if they would even accept me as a client since I have black box dye on my hair (because some salons will not). The receptionist said this shouldn't be a problem and that I needed to come in for a consultation or I could email them detailing what I wanted done to my hair with inspiration photos. I emailed them my photos and asked for prices for balayage and cut, and also said I wanted the most experienced stylist which was the owner, Hayato. I've had terrible experiences in the past with coloring and wanted someone with top notch experience and didn't mind paying more. I was expecting quality RESULTS for the price I'm paying. Come day of appt, I showed Hayato the balayage I wanted which was a dark chocolate brown (photo below). Right away I was taken back because he started to prepared the dye and before he put the color on, I said wait, I have box dye on my hair and that I told the receptionist this when I booked my appt. He stopped right away and said he needed to bleach my hair first. I KNOW THAT! Long story short, I was there for over 6 hours; he had to bleach my hair twice and tone it a few times because the color came out blotchy and did NOT look like the picture I showed him. He finished dying my hair, cutting and blow drying, and noticed that it did not come out right (which was very apparent) and said he's going to have to bleach it AGAIN! We went through the entire process again of bleaching, toning, and coloring for it to come out looking blotchy still and multiple toned. If you section my hair apart and look inside, you'll see that the color looks HORRIBLE. For the price I paid and quality of job, I'd never come here EVER again or refer anyone. Dying inside, I went to check out and said I wasn't going to tip and the lady at the front desk looked at me like I was crazy for not tipping. She also didn't deduct my $100 deposit that I put down when I first booked the appt and she she forgot. All in all, I had a terrible experience and my hair is beyond damaged now. This is my first time at Hayato and I specifically chose this salon because they specialize in creating natural looking hair. I was in desperate need of that especially since the bottom half of my hair was previously bleached blonde for the peekaboo trend and the upper half had faded red highlights. The texture of my hair was also different from the multiple treatments. I'm so grateful Hide took on the challenge and he did an amazing job! I called to make an appointment and was able to schedule one for the very next day. I showed up about 15 minutes early but they were able to accommodate me. My stylist, Yukari was both professional and detail-oriented. I explained briefly what I was looking for and she exceeded my expectations. This is my second experience at Hayato and I have been blown away both times (hair pun intended) by their professionalism, attention to detail, quality service, and the end result. I did a lot of research on Japanese digital perms in New York - checking prices, comparing photos, and asking friends. Chances are you're in the same boat. Come to Hayato and I promise you won't be disappointed. The salon is very clean and the wait isn't bad if you make an appointment before I have requested Haruka both times and she is a perm magician. She specializes in both straight and curly perms and is such a pleasure to talk to. Perms can be tricky but I've been so happy with my results each time. If you want a weekend appointment with her, try to make an appointment at least one month out. Since digital perms are a 3-4 hour process, leave a full afternoon open for this. It isn't cheap at a base price of $250 but Hayato makes it well worth your money. Cut and trim and multiple washes are included in this price. They also offer refreshments if you're feeling thirsty. I have been going to this place over 7+ years and have had a few different stylists. Last time I went with an associate for color instead of my regular sr stylist (who was amazing!) but she left. Barry was my hair colorist. He did a grey root coverup on my dark brown hair. My roots look awesome and here's a little bit about the place and service. Great things first: Barry didn't chit chat (love that), the hair washing station chairs are full on recliners, they put two robes and two neck towels so you won't get any color on you, and they have ear covers so no color or water in your ears. I was the last appt so two guys worked on drying my hair which is appreciated. I was offered tea, coffee, water. Now the not so great things: while drying my hair-the dryer was a bit too close to my scalp, while brushing it pulled my hair, the owners were eating right across from me, and the decor and supplies are not updated. Also odd but effective IMO is taking $5 off the price if you leave a yelp review while you're in the salon. I did this afterwards- so no discount for me lol read more

I went In for a basic highlights (full) and blow out. My appointment began at 3:15... however I did not leave until 7:40pm... I had a Jr stylist, however his work was messy, there were smudges in the highlights, he didn't leave them in long enough creating an orange color instead of blonde, proceeded to tone, wash, and add a conditioning treatment (which I agreed to for an extra $62). Went back to the chair for blow dry in which the orange hair was revealed... he had to redo my entire crown and face frame with more highlights. Again didn't let them sit long enough (hence why my root color wasn't lifted properly for a second time) , proceeded to tone (he had to ask several other stylists which toner to even use), ect. I could tell he was frustrated so I really didn't make a big deal out of it - and the manager was very kind and didn't make me pay for the conditioning treatment (but I had to insist on this he didn't offer). But for $162.. this guy shouldn't be on the floor doing solo work. I literally go to a hair salon once a year. Yes, I know the regular trim and hair treatment keep split ends away and yield healthy locks. But I'm stubborn, I know what I like, the end. Therefore, I'm extremely unadventurous in experimenting with both hairstyles and hair stylists. Basically, the constants in my life, things I will never change, are my husband, my primary care doctor, my hairstyle, and my hair stylist. (Enter Taichi!) My appointment took place a few weeks into the reopening of hair salons, and Hayato met every safety measure to protect themselves and their customers. We were all spaced out, which is feasible for the spacious square footage they have. Plexiglass covered the front desk, everyone wore masks, and the salon felt clean and sanitized. High industrial ceilings, dark exposed brick walls, gothic mirrors and chandeliers all make for a unique and strangely calming vibe. My default hairstyle is a trim followed by a digital perm (which uses heat). It takes a few hours and costs around $300-400 (incl. tip) and is absolutely worth it if it's done well. And here, it is done VERY well. Taichi is a meticulous artist when it comes to hair, and while he has his vision and process in mind, he asked for my input and my preferences to ensure that my own expectations were met. I'm ironically very trusting when I feel like I'm in good hands, so I relied a lot on his direction and opinions. Extremely polite and professional, he's gentle and efficient. In the end, I loved my perm! It gives me some volume, and using the right hair products, I find that it's always been easy to take care of. (Heartbreaking alert: I JUST saw that Taichi will be returning to Tokyo. Cannot deal. But since my first experience at Hayato was so positive, I would definitely try the other stylists.
