Came to this place after exploring the Garden District and part of our itinerary is to look for a King Cake. The place is cold and welcoming (oh, airconditioner! A welcome treat in the 99 degrees heat and 85% humidity); the server was charming. After I picked and bought about 10 pieces of hand pies, I finally ordered my slice of King Cake. I was surprised that it was already wrapped! I would have wanted to see where that piece came from - the one on display was still there, and the server told me initially when we came in that the one on display was the only piece left. I took the cake a bit infuriated why my piece appeared to be pre-packed in a brown bag. At $5 a slice, I deserved a better looking, better packed one (see photo). And the cake was unexpectedly extremely, extremely sweet. I was expecting a normal cake - just like what I tasted when we had a tour of the Mardi Gras World the day before. This one's more gooey. If you're a first timer like me, make sure to specify you want a regular cake and not the gooey one. And don't lose sight of the server--at least know where that piece of cake came from :D I'd still give this 4-stars as I liked the hand pies. read more

I was really disappointed with this cake. The decoration was okay--simple and colorful--but the real issue was the inside. The chocolate cake was extremely dry, almost hard, as if it had been sitting out for several days before being served. To the details of my cake from no mans land. The cake was a put together cake (pre cut pieces iced together) which is fine if the quality is there. Still this would have raised an eyebrow, only because it screams left over cake scraps. But I was hoping this wasn't the case. So my sister starts to cut the cake, she inserts the knife, and the front falls off lol. Probably because of the put together pieces. The cake was so stale you could use it as a knife holder. We requested pineapple filling and they are normally really good about that. But nope mine had none, and I have had loaded pineapple filling on several cakes out of the front case. My wedding cake, my sister's , graduation cakes, retirement cakes, and birthday cakes and baby shower cakes. The petit fours and doberge bites are delicious and the chocolate eclairs are fantastic . Haydel's is my King Cake go-to every year. I always hit up their website and order at the end of December and receive my King Cake on the first "legal" day to do so in January. They have great packages they send out with the cake, the history of Mardi Gras, some beads, and you can also order it with all kinds of stuff depending on the year -- their specialty beads, a CD, and other Mardi Gras supplies. They basically send your party directly to your door. This year, I also had the pleasure of going to Haydel's and actually enjoy their in-person location. They have some cute items around the store to buy/peruse as you're waiting in line. I picked up another King Cake, some tchotchkes, and their famed turtle cookies. I wasn't a fan of the turtles as I thought the cookie dried it out too much, but otherwise, I'm such a fan. They're rich and melt in your mouth. I am not a fan of sugar, but I tolerate these for some odd reason. They are definitely sugary though! The icing is light. The ooey gooey cakes are pretty good. There are a few other places AND households that top these but they are still delicious. They're very light. Nice creamy texture in between. I just wish the top had a little more crispiness. Their mock Hubig's pies are also a nice treat. I wouldn't call them a Hubig's pie match, but they are her baked sister! The fillings are on point. I will say, for $54 (includes shipping - when ours arrived part of the icing had slipped off) - it isn't the cheapest and although I liked it, I can't say I'd personally spend this much. This large cake if moderately cut can feed anywhere from 15-20 people. Supposedly, there's a plastic baby hidden in the "cake" - my manager used a knife to stab it and couldn't find it, so not sure of the custom, but if you find the baby it will supposedly bring you 10x good luck for the whole year (just don't go butchering the cake looking for the baby - I can't imagine stabbing a baby brings good fortune)! Okay, if there is one review you read it should be this in one. Why? Because I planned my wedding from California and got married in New Orleans this past November. Not once did I set foot at my venue prior to the rehearsal, I met my photographer and florist the day of my wedding and we never had the privilege of meeting or even visiting Haydel's bakery before the wedding--WE DID HOWEVER HAVE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND DELICIOUS WEDDING CAKE EVER! We didn't get to do a tasting. I went solely off of suggestions from my venue and it was between Haydel's and some other bakery that I don't recall the name of. I do know that when I looked at the Haydel's website and saw how yummy everything looked and how long they have been around--I was like these are our wedding bakers for sure! Through a few emails with pictures and phone calls with Ashley, the sweetest baker on the planet, I was able to confidently set the plans for our wedding cake. My florist provided a few fresh flowers to add to it and oh my gosh it when we finally saw the cake it was stunning! It was everything I had dreamed of and it tasted like fluffy clouds of funfetti magic; exactly what we wanted! To anyone wondering who to go to for a cake...HAYDEL'S is the best! I ordered 2 king cakes and paid extra for next day air on 2/1 for a 2/3 shipment. I did not receive my cakes and I was told it was due to weather delays. My cakes sat in Jackson, MS for about a week and then arrived today (2/9) apparently by horseback since it's only a 5 hour drive. I called to request a refund and I was told it's not their fault. I can microwave my stale cake. To add insult to injury, the boxes are damaged. Came by on a late Friday morning with the goal of getting a king cake ooey gooey bar, after seeing it on a NOLA foodie Instagram account, though I have been meaning to pay a visit since this was first built (relatively recently??). This store front is small but very cute - I love the white walls, purple ceiling, and fun wall art and light fixtures. They sell candles and other various knick-knacks in addition to the baked goods. There are 2 barstool seats inside and a small outdoor seating area. Nothing else really caught my eye in the case except the ooey gooey bars, but they had "personal" sized king cakes that looked (and felt) like poundcakes in aluminum tins that would be a good option for those not wanting to get an entire king cake. I noticed that some of the goods did not have labels; I had to ask what a few things were, and none of them had price tags. The employee on duty could've been a bit more friendly, but she answered my questions and was patient as I browsed. I ended up getting the king cake and cookies and cream ooey gooey bars ($4.75 each). There was also a wedding cake flavor that I skipped over. The bars seemed a bit moist, as if they had been sitting out for a day or 2. The sugar on the king cake bar was starting to melt into the icing, and the cookies on the cookies and cream weren't too crunchy, do you know what I mean? The king cake bar was very citrusy; my friend thought it tasted "straight up like a lemon bar". It's good if you're into that flavor for king cake. The cookies and cream bar tasted like a fudgy brownie! Both definitely satisfied my sweet tooth and I liked the layers of flavor that the bases (graham cracker and oreo?), filling, and toppings created. I may go back to try a muffin or a cookie (or even their king cake), but I was not as impressed with these ooey gooey bars as I thought I would be ! read more
