I was so excited to get to try Ayu Bakehouse for the first time. On the corner of Frenchmen and Dauphine in a beautiful corner building, it's just so appealing. There are some cute tables and chairs outside as well as about 10-15 seats at counters inside. I was greeted when I walked in and got in line at the counter. The pastries looked so fresh and delicious it was hard to choose just one. I went with a Pan O Chocolat, a chocolate filled croissant and iced latte. The prices are typical for a coffee and pastry. The croissant was so flaky and mouth watering. I ate very slowly enjoying each bite. The iced latte was good as well. I sat right by the espresso machine and enjoyed watching the baristas making coffees. I saw one come out with a perfect heart on top. They also have full bread loaves for sale as well as items for breakfast and lunch. I will definitely be back to try another pastry. read more

I lucked out by finding Ayu Bakehouse. They happened to be located on the same block as my Airbnb. They have a wide variety of baked goods to choose from, with the ham & cheese croissant and parm & chive biscuit being my favorites. I wasn't a fan of the cinnamon roll due to the crunchiness of the raw cane sugar on top. Ayu is a counter service restaurant with a full service coffee setup. The line moves fairly quickly, so don't be deterred if the line is out the door. Seating is very limited, so we took our items to go. Definitely worth the visit! read more

The pastries at Ayu Bakehouse are phenomenal--the croissants are easily some of the best around, flaky and absolutely perfect. Their coffee is also really good and pairs perfectly with the food. The staff does a great job keeping up with the rush. The only downsides come down to space and logistics: Limited Seating: There is very little room inside, so it fills up fast. Outdoor Seating & Smoking: Because inside is tight, you often have to sit outside. Unfortunately, people were smoking in the outdoor seating area, which makes for a pretty unpleasant experience if you're trying to enjoy your food and fresh air. Parking: It can be quite a hassle to find a spot on busy days, so be prepared to circle the block. Overall, the food and drinks are a 5/5 and absolutely worth the trip, just keep the seating and parking limitations in mind if you're planning to stay and eat! read more

Trekked over here on a Sunday afternoon and waited in line for about 10 minutes before being served. The interior was pretty cramped based on their layout so it felt chaotic at times. What I got: Kaya bun (10/5) -- no sweetness whatsoever, just pure coconut pandan flavor coming through. Custard had the perfect consistency--thick, creamy, and has a slight egginess that, if you are familiar with dan taat, will appreciate--and did not leech any moisture into the pastry. Also love the choice of coating in dessicated coconut since it again did not add any sweetness and the fineness melted in your mouth with each bite. Pastry itself was buttery and tender with a slight chew crawssant (5/5) -- a seasonal item of twice baked croissant filled with crawfish and mozzarella. Before hitting the French Market, I took a little detour to Ayu Bakehouse because I heard so much about it and the hotels and restaurants I was visiting seemed to be getting all their pastries through Ayu Bakehouse. I was hungry, so I ordered the Boudin Boy which combines so many things I love-- boudin, egg, and laminated dough. The pastry was very crispy and fluffy without being too buttery and rich. The boudin was really mild in flavor, which I was surprised by, but this is probably good for those new to blood sausages. It was small but hearty. The server offered me a chili crisp oil, and it was good but I don't think the pastry needs it. I also got the jalapeño cornbread cookie, which was right up my alley! It was nice chewy and crunchy from the cornmeal, and the heat builds up nicely. I got an iced matcha & for some reason I expected that it would be iced usucha situation, but then I realized that it was going to be served as a latte. The matcha is pre batched in a squeeze bottle but it tasted fine as an iced latte. Not super flavorful but not bitter or fishy either. You can tell they use quality ingredients. Everything tastes fresh and thoughtfully made. The flavors feel clean and not overly sweet. The baker was friendly and welcoming and they he gave us a free sample which was a nice touch. Note they cannot heat up the twice baked chocolate croissant because it is already crispy and "will burn" so be ready to eat that one cold if you buy it. The line took a while though and it's on the pricey side for what you get. Breadstick was small and above average but not excellent. It's more of a treat than an everyday bakery stop. The muffuletta bread stick was crispy on the bottom and soft inside -- so good. I'm not even an olive person, but I enjoyed it. The boudin bread was crispy and worth the wait. I enjoyed a latte while I waited for a new batch. The space is small, cute, and cozy. There was a line when I left. They also gave small samples of the kaya bun. This review is long overdue -- I've now been to Ayu Bakehouse twice, and both visits were absolutely delightful. The first time I went, I tried the jalapeño cornbread cookie, the parm & chive biscuit, the Boudin Boy (with Lao Gan Ma on the side), and an apple almond danish. Every single thing was incredible -- so much flavor and clearly made with care. The iced vanilla latte might be the best in the city (they use Mammoth Coffee beans!), and it immediately set a very high bar. I went back this week for my first king cake of the season and lucked out by catching a fresh batch of the original king cakes straight out of the oven -- sooo good. Warm, fluffy, and perfectly balanced. The staff is also sooooo nice, especially Emily!! Ayu Bakehouse has officially been added to my list of must-do spots for taking friends and family when they visit from out of town. We ordered the kaya bun, parm and chive biscuit, and shroom boom The kaya bun was PHENOMENAL. The inside is filled with creamy custard, resembling egg tart and the outside has coconut shavings. While I don't usually go out of my way to order anything coconut flavored, I will have to say that I woke up from my nap craving this bun! It's not overly sweet and the coconut flavoring isn't too strong. Would 100% get this again. The shroom boom was delectable and flaky. Inside consisted of mushroom and Gruyère cheese. Felt like this would have tasted even better if it were either freshly made or just warmed up! However, I did go at around ~11:30 am and there was a long line. Came here because its a great location and near my job for a quick breakfast. Because of the location the prices are a little inflated. I normally get the boudin savory pastry and the ham and cheese croissant and both are good but on the small side. You have to get multiple pastries here to fill up since most are on the smaller side. Two of the savory pastries with a coffee is going to run you about $20. I have another local bakery that I go to now because this one gets a line out the door on weekends and the steep price vs amount of food. read more

Egads! I had to visit Ayu twice in two days for a couple of reasons. First, they were already sold out of the kaya buns on my first visit. Second, their baked goods were just so damn good I couldn't resist! If you know me, you are probably already aware I have a lot of feelings about food in general, and baked goods and coffee in particular. For example, I think Nutella is a travesty against food and no bake shop that cares about using good ingredients would ever consider adding that industrial dreck into their products. I am also pretty darn protective of my people's pastries. Babka is a thing. Put some respect on its name, and honor its heritage. Ayu Bakehouse is so freaking good that even coming through their door with the above baggage, I was swooning over their chocolate babka knot. Would it be better with a different chocolate hazelnut spread? Absolutely. But I'm going to let it slide. And the Kaya bun? It's a triumph. Especially with a cup of black coffee, which is how srikaya is intended to be enjoyed anyhow. Have you ever taken a sip of black coffee that was so good it literally stopped you in your tracks? I was gobsmacked by the flavor and body of their simple batch brewed coffee. So much so that I called the shop to ask about the beans and their ratios. The coffee comes from Mammoth, specifically their Acacia single origin beans. A batch is brewed from 115g of beans which yields the shop 64 oz of coffee. Don't skip this coffee. And don't skip the bread either. Ayu's Olive & Garlic Fougasse is perfect walking around food. Plump savory olives and sweet roasted garlic combine in a pull apart bread with a crisp crust and tender elastic crumb. FWIW I did not think the Muffaletta Breadstick or the Boudin Boy quite lived up to the rest of the foods. They were delicious to be sure, but just not at the same level. I found the flavors were a bit muted. Regardless they were still fun to eat. I am only sad that I am human and have a finite appetite. I'd love nothing more than to spend the day at Ayu and eat everything they make. Watching hot baguettes emerge from the oven, looking at the beauty of their sourdough loaf, hearing the sounds of espresso shots being pulled, I just know that there is a lot more to love. It's up to you my fellow Yelpers. Get to Ayu. Get there often. Keep them rolling in dough so that when I return to NOLA I can come back and work my way through more of the menu. read more

This bakery was right next to our hotel in NOLA and ended up being my favorite food from the trip. Its a casual bakery where you order at the baked goods counters and they pack it as you order. Staff was all super nice and friendly, answering questions about various baked goods and helping with suggestions. We got quite a few things, boudin boy, chicory chocolate croissant, guava passion fruit tart, along with 2 different coffees. As stated earlier, the food was all amazing. The boudin boy had such a light flakey pastry and the boudin was super savory and flavorful, adding their chili oil just took it to the next level. The chicory chocolate croissant was super gooey with the chocolate and still maintained the flakiness you want with a croissant. The guava passionfruit, great flavors and not too sweet. I can't remember which coffees I tried but one was their coconut special... I'm not usually a coffee person so I can't distinguish a lot of the notes but I thoroughly enjoyed everything I got. The pastry js definitely excellent - I chose a gluten free oat cookie and it was one of the best I've had, it had a heavier honey flavor and I rather enjoyed that as it paired with oat very well. I also got the Boudin Boy which had very crisp flaky layers, with equal amounts of Boudin and egg inside. Perfectly baked as well. Losing 1 star as I did not like the service or ambience- the pace of transactions was so slow as only one person was fulfilling orders and then that same employee at the register. It took at least 10 minutes to get two items with only 3 people in front of me. It is difficult to see what items they have until you are right at the counter and it's your turn, which adds to the excessive wait. Our niece, who lives in NOLA, said she had to introduce us to Ayu Bakehouse since we love excellent pastries. When we arrived, there was a line out the door, but our niece assured us that it was well worth the wait! She was right. The chocolate babka knot is absolutely amazing. As we travel, we can find chocolate babka bread, but nothing with the flakiness of this beautiful pastry. My niece had never tried the babka knot, but now it's her new favorite. I went on a run Monday morning, and I saw this restaurant with a huge line. I knew I had to check it out on my trip one of the days I was there. When you walk in, the aroma of the fresh bread hits your nose immediately. You can see the oven behind the register and know that it's the freshest pastries you'll get to taste. So many goods to choose from, but not a lot to stomach space to pack it in for me. I got the jalapeño cornbread cookie, Kaya bun and shroom boom. All were big hits. It was extremely crowded when we arrived, but the line moved quickly, so don't let that deter you. OMG, AYU! Our hotel mentioned getting croissants and cinnamon buns from this bakery, so say no more I'm in the door! Gotta love that sweet bakery smell when you walk in. Great menu online, for homework. Display case is loaded with a deep variety of rolls, filled pastries, cookies and specialty twists. Back counter had probably six or so loaves, with a garlic olive pugliese really standing out visually with a dark bake. We got a baguette to go, cornmeal jalapeño cookie, sausage roll and a cappuccino. Emily the super friendly bread tender talked up my (pizza) t-shirt, suggested heating the pastry, threw in some butter AND comped a croissant to try. Everything was incredible, the interior structure on the croix next level, flavor too. Capp was excellent. We sat at a wide communal table inside and talked with neighbors. Such a great place in nola! There was a wait which went by pretty quick within 5-10 minutes we were in the door. There were about 10 seats inside and about 5 small tables outside. The shop is so cute and welcoming! I had Ayu on my list of places to come during my trip to NO and accidentally stumbled upon it while walking the neighborhood. I already knew i was getting the boudin boy so I ordered that with a water and the boudin boy was warmed in the oven while I waited. Ayu offers many unique pastries it was hard to restrain myself and not get multiple things but I was most excited for the boudin boy as I love boudin and inside a flaky dough, come on! Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the lack of flavor the boudin boy had. The croissant part was delicious, so flaky and buttery but the contents was missing something, maybe more boudin? Also, I didn't get a chili oil that I see on all the pics so that may have helped. I surprisingly liked the egg that was added, it's really unlike anything I've eaten before so I was sad it didn't hit like I hoped. Cute spot with tasty treats. It's small and there is a line. The egg and cheese roll are pre assembled, you can add bacon for a few dollars. My issue is they reheat them and the eggs were still cold in the middle. We were walking and eating within a few mins of leaving so there was no going back to address the cold eggs. I've been wanting to come here for a while now, so I made sure to come in my latest trip. I got up early (stayed in CBD area and walked here, got here at 8:45am) there was a line out the door. When I got inside the door, I had a view of the pastry cases. It looked like some of the things I wanted were gone. They were bringing over trays of things to a rack nearby. I was hoping that some of the things I wanted were there. They were sold out of the chocolate chicory croissant and the parm chive biscuits. They did just bring out the boudin boy tray, so I got 2 of those, a pumpkin Danish, chocolate babka knot, jalapeño cornbread cookie and an olive and garlic fougasse (a loaf of bread). Everything was delicious! Boudin Boy sort of reminded me of an Irish sausage roll. The jalapeño cornbread cookie was chewy and the heat hit you in the back of your throat later, very unique. I got a muffaletta bread stick, love the idea, but the fill ins either fell off or there wasn't much to begin with. I also grabbed a cappuccino and it was good. When I saw the line down the sidewalk at Ayu, I knew I was in the right place! We waited for about 20 minutes on a weekday at about 10:30 AM. Once you get inside, the process of getting your items is extremely fast. At Ayu, There is obviously a lot of technical finesse happening. That being said, there were only a couple of pastries that that I felt were so unique that I couldn't get them anywhere else. The jalapeño cornbread cookie was my favorite item! It was buttery, crumbly and had a little heat at the end. The Boudin Boy, cinnamon roll and chocolate babka knot were good but honestly lacked a little pizzazz for me. The seasonal pumpkin cheesecake danish was also delicious but I wish there was a stronger hit of flavor. Overall, the bakers clearly know what they are doing! Someone bought the king cake to work and it was so good, I knew I had to get my hands on one. It is not your traditional king cake, but a mix of a king cake and a croissant. I decided to go on a Sunday and I called first asking if they still had king cakes left (a few days earlier my mom went and they were sold out). They told me they had some left so I drove to the store. It's only street parking in that area but thankfully I was able to find a spot. There was a line when I got there and I waited about 15 mins before I was able to go in. This was the Sunday before Mardi Gras so I would assume the wait probably isn't that long other times of the year. It's a smaller bakery but they do offer some seating inside and outside. The workers I encountered were nice. I was able to get the king cake but I will say it is a little on the pricier size as it's kind of small and is $40. Ayu Bakehouse was on mine and my husband's itinerary during our visit to NOLA. It was a little out of our way, walking distance wise, but my husband said screw it let's order the Uber and go! So glad we did because this by far was my favorite bakery for pastries and coffee. I felt like a kid in a candy store. So many delicious options to choose from. When I told my husband how much I spent he goes how?! Lol. We ordered: Boudin Boy (Peanut Chili Oil provided, must try) 10/10 Pain Au Chocolat 10/10 Parm & Chive Biscuit 10/10 Iced Mocha 10/10 Iced Latte (Requested for vanilla) 10/10 Hot Mallow - Pecan Praline (have yet to try) Every pastry was so delicately flakey & flavorful. Our iced drinks were not overly sweet, thank goodness, as we are used to being saturated with from our big name coffee shops. I'm so happy we made the time to come here and wish we had tried them sooner during our visit! I would've probably come back everyday if we stayed closer. Highly recommend! read more

I'm thrilled to discover fantastic breakfast just outside of the French Quarter. The shroom boom croissant when warmed, ( not in a microwave) and vegetarian Muffaletta sticks are not to be missed. read more
