Hayward is in a cute small town of Carlton. Carlton is about an hour away from Portland, a very small town with a rustic edge, it's like going back in time. Hayward is nicely remodeled and decorated. There are bar seats, booth seats, table seat and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating is surrounded by lush green plants. There is a tasting menu for $98, but the items are undisclosed, left to the chef to chose so I didn't go with this and ordered a la carte. The bread is served warm, soft, oiled, so good. So good that I ordered a 2nd piece. Probably best bread I've had. The food is good. I wish they had more red meat options though. The cod is probably the best entree item from a consensus. They also have the cutest match boxes. Portions are on the small end. Street parking. read more

We had a wonderful dinner at Hayward. We had a larger party so we did the Kickback menu along with some other dishes. Service was outstanding- warm friendly greeting, they offered to take our coats, we were seated right away, great suggestions for drinks, and food was delivered in a cadence that didn't feel rushed, but didn't feel like you were waiting long either. We enjoyed some dishes more than others, but overall the food was really delicious. The stand-outs were some of the dishes we didn't catch the names, but the cod was well liked and so was the steak. Parking was a little hard due to the Christmas lights at the park across the street. This was almost an hour drive for us and it was worth it. We would recommend and look forward to going back to Hayward. read more

Super cute interior and ambiance. We did the "kick back", which was their version of a tasting menu. It was $84/person but included dessert. Based on the portions, I'm not sure if it would have been cheaper to just order off the menu since all of them were shared plates. However, we did get to try everything on the menu except for the confit potatoes and the gigante beans. The sesame focaccia and the endive salad were highlights for me, with the raab tempura as the runner up. Unfortunately the two main dishes were less exciting. The cod dish was very salty and while the fish was juicy and tender, it was so salty we didn't eat the lentils. We provided this feedback and the waitress just thanked us for it. The pork chop was rather fatty and had some gristle on it but the flavor was very good. One other disappointing thing to note is that we were there celebrating a birthday, which was noted on the reservation, and we received no acknowledgement of that. We had had a fantastic dining experience at Hayward on Thursday night. We started with the sesame focaccia served with koji butter - absolutely delicious! The focaccia had the perfect hearty texture and the koji butter was a wonderful, flavorful addition. For the main course, we shared a pork chop, which came with squash curry and tempura turnip. The pork chop was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. However, one end had quite a bit of gristle, which was a bit of a letdown. On the other hand, the tempura turnip was a revelation - I might have just found the only way to ever enjoy turnips again! We paired the meal with a bottle of Oregon wine, which complemented the flavors beautifully. The staff was exceptional - attentive, knowledgeable, and so friendly. They made the experience even more enjoyable. All in all, it was a lovely dinner, and I highly recommend this spot for a great meal. Oh -- also, it's inside Mac Market (which is a super cute eating/drinking/shopping place with several tenants in a converted warehouse) but I heard from another patron that they are moving to a standalone in another town. read more

This was our fourth visit, and we were really looking forward to checking out the new location. While the team was accommodating when we asked them to slow the pacing between courses, we were ultimately disappointed by the last two dishes. The housemade dry crackers with cheese lacked flavor and felt underwhelming, and the rice pudding with cherries had an off-putting texture that just didn't work for us. When we shared our feedback, the response was simply, "All of the staff likes it." That felt dismissive and left us feeling unheard, especially as returning guests who have loved past experiences. Our experience vs the price has me reconsidering if we will come back and refer guests to this restaurant. read more

Let me start by saying I was disappointed. The food may have been good, even outstanding, but it was overshadowed by poor customer service. We had a great day to be followed up by a equally great dining experience. All the locals confirmed our choice for an exceptional evening of dining. We arrived and were shown to our table. Drink orders were taken. In fact, servers returned a second time to to ensure they got everyone's drink order. Soon the food started to arrive; appetizers, then entrees. We asked about our drinks and were told our drinks had been cancelled; we appeared intoxicated. We were not loud, acting crazy or being outrageous. If management had subjectively determined we were not fit to serve, why did they wait until half way thru the service to inform us? Given a choice early on, we would have left and not ruined the evening. Instead we went home w/a bad feeling, an upset digestion AND a dinner bill we would have preferred to skip. We had a wonderful experience here. The restaurant is located in an open loft warehouse space shared with other businesses. The menu seems to rotate often depending on what's in season. On the night that we went, the grilled psb (purple sprouting broccoli) was probably the star of the show. The grill flavor was great and it was well seasoned. The chitara pasta was a little salty for me but I liked the handmade noodles. The restaurant was able to prepare a kids pasta (with butter and parmesan) for our four-year old. The sturgeon we ordered was cooked perfectly. The etcetera cocktail was excellent. Service was great too. Would definitely come back here. read more

Service at the Hayward is top notch. My wife and I went with the chefs choice meal. The presentation was good with each dish, but overall we just didn't vibe with flavors. Everything was cooked exactly as it should--perfectly cooked fish is hard and they nailed it. But ultimately, when I go to an upscale restaurant I'm looking for the "is it worth it?" factor, Hayward just didn't meet that for me. read more

As a family of foodies who felt like we'd tried it all, Hayward gave us the "wow" factor we'd been missing. The food was innovative and delicious and got us excited to be eating out again. Our whole party of six was happy, from our 16 year old daughter to our 95 year old grandma. The team was wonderfully kind, attentive and accommodating and the ambiance was perfect. It felt special without being pretentious. Plus, having this gem tucked away in Carlton is such a treat; the town is so cute and quaint, making it the perfect trip into wine country. Where do I even start? From the moment you step in to this magical space, we were greeted with friendliness and welcoming vibe. The space is very well decorated and feels cozy and homey. The cocktails are delicious and unique, and I like that you can choose a half size so you can try more of them! Now, on to the food. I have been here twice and we did the kick back (tasting menu) both times. EVERY SINGLE BITE was the most delicious thing I have ever eaten, and somehow everything that I ate was better than the last. Their ingredients are super fresh and local and you can tell that lots of love goes into the preparation of every dish. I would 10 out of 10 recommend this place to evryone. A waste of a meal. Did the "layback" preset menu. We had no idea what was being served (plates just dropped at table without explanation), and almost every dish was, no joke, 10x too salty - we all agreed. Bizarro. We've been fans of Hayward since its McMinnville beginnings, and the team has taken it to the next level with their beautiful new Carlton location. We loved the warm, welcoming vibe. The drinks menu is impressive, including the NA portion, from which we ordered. My partner and I shared three dishes, all made with local vegetables, all innovative and delicious, and a dessert as pretty as it tasted. Chef Kari puts things together you wouldn't expect, and it's so amazing. I have never once been disappointed. The service is warm and attentive without being intrusive. An especially delightful aspect: the restaurant never feels pretentious, stuffy, or try-hard. I felt like I was dining at the house of a friend who just happens to be a brilliant chef. This is a belated review for a meal I had back in February. This wonderful restaurant is deeply rooted in place in a way I find very soulful, serving local Pacific Northwest ingredients perfect for Oregon wine country. If your table does not participate in the chef's multi-course meal, you will be completely ignored. Due to dietary sensitivities, my partner and I ordered focaccia but then both decided to get the salmon as an entree. We waited a full hour at our table in the garden (lovely setting) while tables around us were served several courses. Even worse, when our salmon came out (again, a full hour after we had ordered it) the server made a dismissive comment about how we were not sharing courses and did not even acknowledge the delay. read more

Not impressed. The staff is not all that friendly and more business oriented than community oriented. Charge industry $35 corkage fee which is crazy because they wouldn't even have a restaurant without the Willamette Valley wine industry and rather than recognize that they gouge the locals. The menu is totally confusing. You can't tell the apps from the entrees. They remove the best things on the menu without notice so if you come the wrong night good luck And, the furniture and chairs are totally uncomfortable like they don't want you to stay long. Good food, disappointing lack of generosity for the tasting menu, and an all around ok experience. I loved the meal I had at their old location, and so we tried their new place in Carlton, which is a charming interior with a great color scheme. However, the chairs were not chosen for their comfort. We decided to indulge in the "Kick Back" tasting experience. Generally, when a restaurant has an a la care option along side a tasting menu, things can go one of two ways: You rejoice at the end of the meal that you trusted the establishment to serve you dinner, and you feel that you were treated with great hospitality, or you start calculating a price comparison and wonder why you didn't just order the individual dishes and save money. Unfortunately, Hayward has you pulling out your phone's calculator, leading to the unsavory conclusion that you did not get your money's worth. Granted, we were served two dishes that were not on the regular menu : a tasty steak tartare and a small little cheese course with a nice cracker. By my calculation, we still did not come out ahead. And what's more, there were critical items on the menu we missed such as the chocolate profiteroles. In fact, we were only served one dessert, which was ok, but left a lot more to be desired. The rest of the dishes were competent, and I especially liked the Watercress Garganelli. And the focaccia with butter was excellent. But the menu wasn't the delicious wonder that I remembered from their old place. If I were coming here again, I would go with the a la carte. read more

Pleasant, well managed service from knowledgeable staff who all seemed invested in making sure that we were happy and thoroughly satisfied. We all opted for the chef's choice menu. On the drive back after our meal, while none of us had any sense of economy when we were enjoying the food, we all laughed because the food costs for ingredients were very low but we paid no attention.
