When we moved from Trabuco Canyon to Huntington Beach a few months ago to be closer to the grandkids, I needed to find two things a donut shop or bakery that made fresh banana nut muffins and a good bike shop to help me maintain the family's bikes. I found the muffins and donuts, but it took a little longer to find a great bike shop. I stopped by several of them in the Huntington Beach area and I found one that has a real passion for the customer, Huntington Beach Cycles on Atlanta. They recently had to make a tough decision. They got so backed up with service work they needed to lock the doors to focus on repairs which created no bike sales or parts sales for the few days they had to close. I know it's tough on some of us that had bikes in behind closed doors, but I respect a business owner to keep his commitment to service and repair the bikes that he had taken in and focus on his service. During the last several weeks they lost a technician and that put some extra workload on the rest of the staff. Mike did a great job servicing our bikes. I also noticed that the owner of the shop, Kevin, has an outstanding relationship with his team and they all share his passion for the customer. I really don't want to write a negative review but my experience was not great. We've had our bikes serviced here before. I remember going in our 1st time when it was first opened with different owners. They were fantastic & made me feel comfortable. They were not intimidating and the service went great. We took our bikes there a 2nd time, I don't know who the owner was at the time, and everything was fine. This is our 3rd time taking our bikes for service there. This time our experience was not the same under the current ownership. No shade to the owner. He was very nice & pleasant. I'm glad to see a lot of good reviews but that was not my experience. We dropped off our mountain non-e bikes for general service as they weren't running great at the end of the week. He mentioned that they'd be looked at the following Tuesday with an estimate (week 1). He mentioned that it'd be possible to adjust recommended repairs to suit our budget. Great! No problem. Very considerate suggestion. But we didn't hear from him on Tuesday or any day that 1st week. We tried calling a couple times that week but no answer. We tried stopping by at 11 (posted opening time was 10) and there was a note on the door they open at noon. We stopped by another day & it seems there was a family emergency so he'd get to us the 2nd week. We got busy and another week rolled around and a 2nd Tuesday with no news on the repair estimate. We called a couple times the 2nd week & there was no answer. We stopped by around 4:30 and it was closed (posted closing time was 6). We called again that weekend & he said his tech would come in the next Tuesday, the 3rd week, to look at the bikes. At this point, the bikes are sitting in the shop for 2 full weeks going on a 3rd before anyone even looks at them for an estimate. This does not inspire confidence that the bikes would even be done that 3rd week. While maybe they would have finally been repaired in the 3rd week, we decided cut our losses & take our bikes elsewhere. I truly hope this business succeeds, but we're probably not going to go back. read more

Anyone who would give a negative rating must be the perfect sole-proprietor of a small business themselves with no bad days or just a pretentious silver spoon snob... anyways Kevin at HB Cycles is the real deal cyclist. I first rolled in over a year ago needing a derailleur adjustment and a crank. He guaranteed his work and adjusted it without charge when I messed it up a few weeks later... Over the year he has become not only my only singular bike mechanic but a genuine friend. He has helped me countless times; I cannot say enough good things about him and his skill sets. No up-sell, no attitude--just straight-up help. Hanging out in the shop or by talking with neighbors who have had the same experience; I've watched ( and heard via word of mouth) him do the same for half the neighborhood: local guys on cruisers, kids on e-bikes, I've even seen him give bikes away to those in need. Even those not in need but just dig bikes like myself lol He's patient, knows every bike like it's his own, and actually cares if you're out there pedaling instead of sitting on your couch. Actually every bike I've pointed out as being eye catching and visually stunning have been custom bikes built by Kevin the owner/operator. This place isn't just a shop--it's keeping Huntington Beach moving! Fresh air, sore legs, stupid grins--Kevin gets it. If you ride, go see him. An unfortunate decline in customer service and workmanship over the years, under new ownership. When guys like Tim, Elliott, and Cameron worked here, this was one of the best bike shop's around. Unfortunately, the new owner seems overworked, overwhelmed, and not all that interested in the customer service aspect. We used to take our bikes here for the whole family, and no matter the issue it would be resolved. Now, we are finding rude behavior from the owner, who seems to be the only one working there, and sloppy workmanship. We've recently brought in two bikes, both of which we paid to have repaired but the problems have not been resolved and the workmanship has been lacking professionalism. Twice now, we have been given back bikes with a DIY approach rather than a professional bike mechanic. If I want something jimmy-rigged together, I'll do it myself, not pay someone else to do it. And, when you ask the new owner about these things, he gets defensive and upset, and rather than addressing the issue, says he's too busy and pushes customers out the door. I hope to update this review someday with a change in attitude, but truthfully, I don't think we'll be going back. This very unfortunate for a local business that should be thriving on local and loyal customers. Be nice. Be kind. Be honest. It goes a long ways. read more

Sorry, but I need to vent: At the Beach with my family and friends for a Birthday party enjoying our day and decided to take the bikes out for a nice casual ride but broke a bolt on my daughter's seat post clamp....ughhh. So, we took the bikes by the closest bike shop called HB Cycles on Atlantic/ Magnolia. When we got to the shop the front doors were closed with a big sign saying to please go to back door for bike pick ups and repairs. So we went to the back door, I said hello as I entered and the owner said they were closed, I mentioned the sign on the front door and mentioned I needed a bolt or new seat clamp to "repair my daughters bike. He walked to the end of the counter turned back and looked straight at me and said "Your lucky I didn't shoot you for coming in the back door (doors wide open too). I replied "Are you kidding me?" He said I'm lucky he didn't shoot me. I replied, I'm not sure why you escalated this for whatever unknown reason but I'll go to another shop or possibly ACE Hardware just down the street. This guy way extremely sketch and said he was the owner. I suggest to ALL my family, friends, and SPORTS INDUSTRY friends to NEVER go to this shop and go to bike shops that actually want to help people. We did go to ACE Hardware and fixed the problem with a $ .69 part. I talked to the Manager to say thank you so much for the young man that helps us as he definitely went out of his way and I greatly appreciated the help! read more

I usually do most of my own wrenching on my bike. But unfortunately, had a fall that tweaked my ride out further than I was comfortable YouTubing from GCN. I dropped my Trek Madone off on Saturday (on a holiday weekend) and they had it back to me by Tuesday evening. I elected to get there highest level service, tune 3. They tore the bike down to the frame to clean all the components as well as laced up all new cables and housing. Got some new tape while I was at it. I'm really picky and these guys did an amazing job. They were super friendly, accommodated all of my question/concerns, and just provided an all around awesome experience. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned rider, I highly recommend stopping by HB Cycles for what you're looking for. They've definitely earned my business. I dropped off my bike for new rims and tires and 2-weeks later they did nothing with it, except give me a quote for what I didn't ask for. I bought it there, had it serviced there, but won't go back anymore. The employees have turned over and the good ones I worked with are gone. I hope others have better luck. I brought my oldest son's bike in for repair a couple years ago after years of use and neglect. It required a lot of work, all of which exceeded my expectations. It actually feels better that when it was new. My middle son's e-bike was next. It required repair from teenage abuse, and an upgrade from cable to hydraulic brakes. Kevin discovered major issues with the electronics during inspection and was able to order all of the components needed to fix it. During the waiting process for the parts to arrive, he kept in touch with status, and delivered a solid bike when it was done. Tim the chief tech is GREAT ! The owner not .. Had an issue as my bike was there for over a week tho fixed as Tim was out for personal reasons . It needed a chain and rear sprocket which was done by day two . Another tech called and said it needed a check as it was clicking . Went tday to PU. Had words w/owner after asking why it took so " fricking" long .. he laid on me Tim's Dads C and Tim was in hospital taking care of him . I replied I didn't need to know that private medical info and said it was unprofessional to share that w/acustomer .. Then it escalated.. told me I was. I wish I had asked for his name but the receipt I received says Elliott so I assume he's the one who assisted me. If you see this Elliott, THANK YOU! I have pretty severe anxiety, so your chill and reassuring demeanor really helped me enjoy my bike purchasing experience. (I haven't purchased a bike in over a decade). He adjusted the seat for me multiple times till it was just right for my 6'1" height, checked the tire pressure, lubed up the kick stand joint and got it in perfect riding condition. My husband and I stopped by about an hour and a half before close on a Sunday. The staff was helpful and let us test ride the bikes in the back alley. We felt no pressure to buy, but ended up doing so due to them having the model of bike in the exact color and sizes we've been looking for ( and on sale too!). They took good care of us and even offered to stay a little bit past close if it meant we could come back same day like we wanted to to pick up the bikes. We ended up making it back before close, so we didn't have to inconvenience them. They threw on free water bottles/ bottle cages too! IF YOU NEED TIRES REPLACED OR WORKED ON, AVOID THIS SHOP. I don't like leaving negative reviews but unfortunately this place earned. I came in to replace my tires on my tubeless road bike wheels since my current tires were showing wires. At the time they couldn't order the tires I wanted due to not being in stock with their distributors. So i went with a tire they recommended. Almost a week later, they called me to come pick it up. When I got home, I noticed the wheel wasn't spinning freely due to the tire rubbing the front derailleur clasp. Pissed off that this wasn't noticed before calling me to pick it up, I came back to the shop. They ordered a smaller size and I returned back after almost a week again. This time it cleared only to to notice the tires were flat the very next morning. Pumped them up to do a short ride only for it to keep losing more air. So I took it back again, same issue. So this time they put tubes in, 5 visits later I'm stranded yet again with another flat. Not only did I waste $225, I wasted weeks of not riding due to their lack of knowledge to install tires. They tried stating it was my wheels which I know they are not because I never had issues like this when I had two other shops install tires for me. Save your hard earned money and time and go else where unless you want to end up stranded miles away from your car/home. read more

The owner of this shop, Kevin, is a class act. I dropped off my bike and my daughter's bike for service a couple days ago and when I walked in he was being yelled at by a customer about how his bike was not done yet and didn't care that they are short a tech this week. The guy was saying racial remarks to Kevin as he was leaving but Kevin handled it with ease. Some people are horrible!!!Anyways.. I got both of the bikes back last night so being short staffed didn't seem to slow them down. These guys work fast and are friendly and knowledgeable.
