Excellent PT staff here. I worked with Asra for a few months for a hip/back issue. She was not only very knowledgeable and easy to work with but super affable. Everyone at H&D is, loved Cheryl at the front desk too. The location is clean and run very efficiently (streamlined appointment scheduling and they run your copay automatically so no waiting around to pay before you leave). This location was convenient to my place of work and also very accommodating with early AM or evening, after work, hours so I didn't have to miss any time at work. They also provide t-shirts and shorts for you to wear during your sessions (I must admit, it was a huge convenience not having to pack a bag of gear for every appointment!) read more

I have had PT a number of times in my life, for bad ankles and flat fee... neck and back issues. Working with Greg at H & D was the first time I worked with Physical Therapy to solve my physical injuries, not just deal with the pain until I was re-injured and the pain was back. Greg helped me with two different issues - my ankle and a neck/shoulder issue quickly and efficiently... he helped me understand the problem and set out exercises I was able to do at home - and even on the subway platform that strengthened my ankles and reduced pain and healed the injury. Highly recommend H & D if you are in need of good PT's who work with you to understand your injury, address the problem and heal and strengthen you. read more

The therapists here are amazing. A little back story: I had been having massive pain in my calves for months, and sought out PT's, Doctors, etc. After months of fruitless PT at other places, I came to H&D on a friend's recommendation. After months of attempted diagnoses by four other PTs, ranging from posture, to strength, etc etc. Greg looked me over and worked with me on some flexibility exercises - lo and behold I'm running pain free =) Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, from the front desk to the pt's and aides. I went to HD Physical Therapy once or twice a week for four months and had a good experience. I made appointments with three different therapists (I like to do that because each one has different strengths and knowledge). Most of my visits were with Livia Li, who was great at massaging/working over my surgically repaired Achilles' tendon and then giving me challenging exercises to rebuild its strength and function. She also helped me out with other stretches that I had been doing inefficiently for years. Appointments were easy to make, the staff is friendly and the place runs like clockwork. Unlike other PT shops, at HD you're with one therapist for your entire 45-minute appointment. I can't offer many details on billing, as HD is in-network for me (Aetna) and I had already satisfied my deductible so I never paid a cent out-of-pocket. read more

I've had a few sports and work-related injuries and have seen several physical therapists across the country, but Matt Rector, at H&D, has provided me amazing results, improvement and pain relief. He and his staff of assistants are the best -- knowledgeable, caring, instructive, helpfull, and most importanlty, extremely effective at helping one recover from all kinds of injuries requiring physical therapy. I'm almost hesitant to log this review as I don't want Matt to get over-booked such that I won't be able to get into see him if/when I need him. read more

Medical treatment is a very person-specific thing, so this review comes with a caveat that this is based on my experience only. I'm happy the other reviewers to date have regained their health with H&D enough to give it 5 stars, but I strongly advise anyone shopping for PT shops to consider the following: - My PT Kim was knowledgeable and personable. I liked her. That's the good part of this review. - The initial consult for me was a flurry of assumptions, leading to the premature conclusion that I have a common weakness problem seen in many female runners, along with a possible herniation in my spine. No suggestion that I get an MRI to know for sure whether/where the herniation is in the spine, no discussion other than a quick dismissal ("it could be a number of reasons") of what was causing the crippling pain down my leg. - Some of the exercises turned out to be detrimental for my condition. I quit H&D because of their clerical/insurance nonsense (more on this below) and found my way to a new doctor, got an MRI and nerve tests, and then found likely the best PT in Manhattan (Brian at BeFit). From everything I learned along the way, the glute exercises H&D launched into on day 1 were aggravating my nerve pain. This explains why my symptoms got worse every week I went to this PT. - The part that matters most is H&D's biggest weakness. You walk in, see your PT for a rub down that takes half of the 1 hour session, then you see whoever the next available exercise person is for your exercises (I don't think they were PTs; just trainers). The PT never actually did the exercises with me. The people that did were often distracted and unprofessional while gossiping and joking with each other, and did no better than a run-of-the-mill beginner gym trainer. The exercises were often WAY too easy (I don't think I ever broke a sweat in my two months of going regularly), and there was zero continuity -- you'd see someone different almost every time, and that person had only a superficial understanding of your injury. Once I was told to stretch on my own for 10 minutes while one of the trainers finished chatting with another patient, after which she spent 20 minutes with me seemingly thinking of exercises off the top of her head. - There is zero organization. After my first consult, I asked how often I should come. "Whenever you want." How often should I do these exercises you're showing me? "We'll talk about that eventually" (WHAT??? Also, this talk never actually happened). And my favorite...Should I stop running? "Maybe." I foolishly took this to mean that I shouldn't stop running, and put myself months behind in my eventual treatment and lost all feeling in my foot. On about our 6th visit, I explained that my pain was growing significantly and the PT just shrugged and said that I shouldn't be running. - One of the receptionists is very very bad at her job. Insurance papers were sometimes not filed on time, and there were significant lags between the insurance approving more appointments and her letting me know/schedule those appointments. The final straw was when she assured me that she would call as soon as she got the approval (I called back a couple of times asking about this because I was already wary of this process), I got a copy of a letter from my insurance in the mail, and I never heard back from her. By this point the overall experience was so disheartening (not to mention damaging) that I decided to go elsewhere. read more

I am a bit surprised to see that no one has reviewed this place yet! I have been going to their UN/Tudor City location for the last two months and have to say that it does not get better than this! The therapists are warm, friendly, knowledgable and make you feel very comfortable. I worked with Tom and Michelle and both of them were excellent! I had a great experience at H&D! I had patellofemoral syndrome in my knee from an injury and had plans to go on a 5 day hike in the mountains of South America a little over a month from the injury. Azra Abdullah worked with me twice a week until my trip and I was back to being healthy in time to go. She really worked with me to get me better in time and I enjoying hanging out with her during our sessions! She also gave me a ton a great advice I used once I got there. Kathleen at the 46th St facility administered therapy to me for three months for Achilles tightness. Kathleen had given me therapy before at H&D's 43rd street site. I am very impressed with the treatment I received in both instances. Appointments were easy to schedule, were on time, and admin staff was pleasant and efficient. Kathleen Fox is extremely knowledgeable, caring and thorough; treatment was effective. I only wish I would receive similar treatment from my MD's. I have nothing but positive things to say about the facility and my experience there. read more

After a slight stroke last spring I was sent to H&D for physical therapy. The place was immaculate, the office satff bright and friendly (there's a coffee machine if you get there early), and then there is the physical therapists! I was fortunate enough to be set up with a wonderful woman called Asra, and boy did she know what she was doing! From massage and stretching to active instruction in the gym, Asra was the best. I am all better now (knock wood) and I have Asra and the folks at H&D to thank for the rehab part. I hope you don't need their services, but if you do, they are the people to use. I selected the 43rd St (between Second and Third) office of H&D for my therapy. I was treated for stiff calves and feet and pain in arms and hands. I was very impressed with the quality of knowledge and treatment at this office with Kathleen as my therapist. The space is quiet and clean, appointments start and end on time, and best of all, every therapist seems to understand your problem and work at the individual level to solve it. My friend who had serious neck and back problems, and was treated by Steve, was the person who recommended H&D to me. Hospital for Special Surgery also recommends them. I can't speak highly enough about H&D. I struck gold. My orthopedist had given me a list of recommended PT places in the city. Without knowing anything about H&D, other than they were in-network with my insurance, I randomly made an appointment and never looked back. Now I am on my third injury... yes, I break easy. I had a shoulder operation and was referred to H & D PT from my surgeon. First I met with Greg, one of the co-owners who openly and knowledgeably discussed with me the long/tedious process I was about to embark on and then I was assigned to Kim a physical therapist. On day 1, I couldn't even lift my arm up past my waist and was ready to quit... Thank God, I had the support from Kim, Greg and the rest of the staff at H & D - as months later, my shoulder was back in order and my pain threshold went from a 9 to a 2. I wanted to write this review because too often with physical therapy, we as the general public think that just because we are showing up 1, 2 or 3 days a week, that magically, you're going to be healed. The reality of the situation is that you need to be consistent with physical therapy, yes. But it takes a bit of experimenting as to which movements/exercises are causing pain and which ones are uncomfortable but will eventually lend itself to getting stronger - and that's the main ingredient I received while at H & D. PT is not fun and you need to be serious about it when you do it and I have to say that 2 years later now, my shoulder is great and I thank all at H & D for helping me and motivating me to listen to their wisdom. read more

Kim and the team here are great. I have been to PT numerous times over the last 10 years; primarily for back issues. I was referred to H&D by a top doctor at HSS a couple of years ago, and have been for a few rounds since. Excellent knowledge of the body and understanding the dynamics (including causation) around injury and symptoms. I have worked primarily with Kim, and have a lot of confidence in her. The exercise trainers have also all been great - very conscientious and very knowledgeable about form, to a detailed level, which is critical. I was recommended H&D by my doctor for physio for 8 weeks for rotator cuff injury. In the first few weeks, all was going fine and the therapist seemed to be giving me good exercises.However, by the 5th week, I was going there and he would give me the same exercises over and over again and I started to think it was a waste of time going for 30 minutes session to do something I could do at home. I thought I was wasting my sessions from my insurance. At one point, I very nicely asked him if we could add different exercises for variety and he said that at the point, there was nothing else he could do for me and the he would discharge me. Well, I was getting very knowledgeable in rotator cuff injuries and I knew there were tones of new exercises for rotator cuff that he could have added to the routine. I had a strong vibe that he was trying to get rid of me for some reason (believe me I am a very nice guy and never put reviews about business on line) when I told him that my doctor suggested to continue therapy for 6 more weeks. Also, I was never pleased that many times he would lack focus when working with me and was always looking at his watch kind of eager to finish the session. It was never a good feeling. I personally think the director should address all this with this therapist. Also I think they are getting bigger now and are trying to get rid of patients with insurance. They also moved to a new location on 3 rd Avenue which feels very cold, sterile and business like. Honestly when I walked in, I thought I was in a law office, not a physiotherapy office. My experience at the end was not good. I would not go back. read more
