They are no longer using the Deva products that they used for years in the salon, and actually had the nerve to insult it after they switched. The turnover in stylist is to often and without notice. I don't even know where to begin, Mel went above and beyond. She spent a LOT of time hearing the story of what happened to my hair. I told her what I wanted and she gave me several suggestions about what I could do and where I was technically at. She was thorough in her explanations while also making me feel much better about my neglected hair. Mel was so encouraging and kind during the explanation process without over explaining or trying to push specific ideas on me. Halfway through the cut, she mentioned a few ideas that might help frame my face and mentioned "curtain bangs" in passing. Bangs are usually a HUGE leap but she was so encouraging and thorough in her explanation so I told her to go for it, she absolutely NAILED a style I wouldn't have even thought of. I mentioned several insecurities (hair loss at my temples and my split ends) and she managed to give me a cut/style that alleviated all of that, while teaching me how to style on my own. I was given product suggestions (most of which I use already) and MUCH needed styling tips for my specific hair type. I felt confident and relaxed by the end of the appointment, which usually doesn't happen for me after a huge change. The compliments and encouraging attitude completely eased my anxiety and boosted my self esteem, I honestly wanted to cry with relief. Growing up with curly hair, curly hair cuts are often hit or miss, and stylists seem to group all curl types together. She listened to my entire story and even categorized me based on my past experiences and photo examples I showed her. Mel managed to give me a cut SPECIFIC to my hair/curl type and what it was I wanted. I rebooked with her immediately after the appointment and I can't wait to go back!! Martha KNOWS how to cut curly hair (she is a curly herself). I've been going to her for the last few years and she never disappoints. For the longest time I was searching for someone who knew how to cut difficult, thick, curly Jewish hair, but nobody knew how. I tried Devachan several times but it was crazy expensive and they NEVER took out enough weight- I always walked out feeling like I'd completely wasted my money. Martha, the owner of HeadChop, used to work at devachan but left to start her own place, and charges about half what they do. Martha is also super, super nice and friendly, and she's great to have conversation with but doesn't force you to talk to her (you can be quiet and read a magazine the whole time). She works SUPER quickly- my cut is always under 30 minutes. The wash could be a little longer cuz it feels so good but... that's ok :) I also skip on the leave-in product besides conditioner, and i walk out with wet hair cuz I don't feel like waiting/sitting under a hot ball. When they talk about underground salon, they mean it literally. This is not in someone's apartment, but it's basically someone's apartment. I went here twice and Martha gave me a great haircut. The issue was that it took forever. The longest haircut of my life. I just had a wash and cut, no dying or anything fancy and time consuming. I thought it just seemed long because of how uncomfortable the small talk was, but my watch confirmed I haven't just lost my attention span or something. If you have curly hair you also know the anxiety that comes with finding a new hair stylist, especially in a GIANT city where there are so many options. This anxiety kept me from cutting my hair for OVER A YEAR AND A HALF. It was too much to try to find someone new once I moved here from LA. So finally, it came down to: I NEEDED a hair cut. I took a chance on yelp, based on the reviews here, and I am so so so so so so glad I did. Martha jumped right in on my mane (which had also been burned by a candle in a bar a few months ago- but that's a whole other story), asking what I liked, what I didn't and started cutting dry, which, if you know, you understand. After she had her hands on my hair for only 5 minutes it already looked a billion times better. She finished the cut and I opted for the wash and style after, which is totally worth it. She walked me through the steps of how to take care of the curls and have them placed so they dry right and then walked me through styling them. Really. While I loved the shape of my hair after the cut I still have MASSIVE split ends, will have to make an appointment at Ouidad or Devachan to get another cut after I've just spent $100 (including the $20 tip I left). However, everyone here was super friendly and the space is really awesome, my haircut personally just did not work out although again, I do like the shape... it may just be the fact that I have tighter curls, not sure. read more

What a cute small salon! The vibe is so cozy and homely, well designed, and the owner Martha is lovely and talented. The rates are very reasonable for the area - there aren't facilities for hair washing but the price makes up for it. This place is awesome! I I always have reservations about trying a new hair salon because I have really thick, curly (3b - curl type) hair and not everyone knows how to handle it. But from the moment I walked in I was put at ease. Elma was my stylist and she did something I've found past stylists to ignore, she listened to what it was that I wanted! She didn't say 'no' or try to persuade me to try something else instead of what I envisioned and instead of working against me, we worked together to figure out a style that I absolutely love. Walking into HeadChop is like walking into someone's cozy basement salon and it isn't pretentious in the least. I've had experiences at other NYC salons in which I've felt out of place because of all of the glitz (not knocking HeadChop at all!), but once you walk into this salon you feel very comfortable. My tresses were treated with patience and care and that's really all I could've asked for. I'd always wanted a shorter cut and I finally found someone who was not afraid or hesitant to go there. The salon is adorable, and Martha is a sweetheart. I went in for a tricky color correction, and I was worried about the evenness of my color when I left, but when I re-examined my hair in my own mirror at home it looked great. She bleached my hair and followed it with about 10 other steps (which were necessary) and my hair still feels great. I arrived 20 minutes early and she took me right away -- she worked on my hair for almost 6 hours! Even gave me a free bang trim. However, this cost me $250; $300 with tip. The thing I appreciated most was all of the personal attention -- I only had to talk to one person for everything, and since I was the only one there, she didn't rush or leave me alone. P.S.: She made an exception and found a way to accept my card instead of cash, which yelp claims is the only kind of payment possible. read more

I LOVE HEAD CHOP! I am going there today and I've lost count of how many times I've had Martha cut my hair. Today will be some color, and even though I dont have a specific plan, her creativity and talent will give me something new and unique. I always walk out of there with a heightened confidence. She can cut any kind of hair, but if you have curly hair, this is the place you've been searching for. She specializes in curly hair, really knows what works for curls and carries fantastic products for curly hair. I haven't even mentioned the shop! Clint (Martha's husband and business partner) is an amazing artist and his creations are all over the shop. I've purchased a few shirts and I always get compliments on how unique they are. I've never had to wait for an appointment, but I've arrived early a few times while Martha is still working with another client and I just browse through their eclectic collection of HeadHoods, shirts, bags, etc. Very cool vibe and atmosphere. I've been growing out my hair for a few years and, after a misguided later cut tht made me look more like a spaniel than a starlet, had kept my locks in the same blunt cut. It was time for a change, but I couldn't make up my mind. So, I booked a spur of the moment appointment with Martha Ellen, hoping she could provide guidance. After a consultation (why do these always involve me waving my hands vaguely and going "er" a lot?) we decided on layers, but more dramatic and starting higher up. She also informed me that I have curly hair. I do? Seriously? I'm almost 30, how has this been a secret for so long? I think Martha Ellen might be a wizard with X-ray hair vision. It was quite a process, especially being used to more basic styles. She cut my hair dry, then I went off for a shampoo and some fantastic conditioner that I am definitively buying when I go back, then a bonnet-dryer, then a regular dryer, then gel and smooshing (that's for the curls) then finally some more little snips to make it perfect. By the end I think she was cutting single strands with laser-like precision. In a weird twist ending, I actually started to really like the cut only after I washed it at home. Turns out I'm not a gel person, but once it got a chance to air dry, my hair started doing this mega-rad "it just does this and I didn't even try" tousled babe-ly mane thing that I am super into. Not only are these ladies awesome at cutting hair and recommending products, they are nice. Like really nice. The shop is also adorable- covered in handmade artwork and protected by a small, friendly dog that will let you pet it's ears when you're waiting under the hair dryer. They do dry cuts, which I'd never tried before but really liked, and book two weeks out because they are (understandably) popular. Elma has been doing my hair for years now and I am so excited that she is now at my favorite salon, HeadChop! When I first starting seeing Elma, my hair was a mess but I didn't know what I was doing wrong. I couldn't recommend this place more. It was the best hair experience I've ever had. Elma is sweet, knowledgeable and she actually cares about what YOU want. She listened to me and based on what I said came up with a solution that I've never heard before - you don't actually want (need) a new haircut/style, you just need to learn how to style/care for your hair. I was delightfully surprised. Yes, I didn't want my hair short again, but every time I tried growing it out it just looked terrible. She understood and walked me through everything. Of course she did trim my hair to clean up the ends and balance the layers, but the meat of the appointment was educative. I learned so much about taking care of my hair and styling it. I should mention that when I say styling, I don't mean I'm blowing out my hair and using crazy products. she recommended CLEAN products which is amazing since I wasn't going to use any chemical laden products even if it did make my hair look amazing. But aside from that, I also learned basic things like, air drying (I have curly/wavy hair), not using a towel and using a t-shirt or microfiber towel instead, and not washing it so often. Since my appt (almost 1 week ago) I haven't washed my hair and although it was a bit greasy the first couple days, it's been balancing out on its own. I'm so happy. So happy with an Elma dry cut. Took her a few times to get the color just right, but in her defense, I have quite the mop of curls on my head and very little idea of what to do with it. Somehow, my vagueness and tight schedule didn't seem to bother her. She was beyond sweet, had me in the salon three times total to give me exactly what I wanted (somewhere deep inside). She worked around my work hours, and made sure that I looked presentable each time I walked out... hot roots and all! After the sessions were through, I officially retired my scissors and box dye, and my hair's never looked better. LOVE this fantastic hidden gem! I got my haircut here two weeks ago and it's one of the best I've ever had. I have thick straight, short hair and Martha Ellen knew exactly how to cut my hair. Really happy with my haircut. They use great Devacurl products too. As a curly girl on a budget, I had to book an appointment at headchop the second I found out that a drycut would only cost $80. I had my cut today, and God it was worth it! When I first entered the shop I was immediately greeted by the very friendly receptionist who went out of her way to welcome me. She even offered me water.
