When I first entered the shop I was immediately greeted by the very friendly receptionist who went out of her way to welcome me. She even offered me water. A few minutes I was sat with Amy the hair stylist. She was extremely attentive when cutting and styling my hair. She even tried to make small talk with me throughout. Wow, just wow! Headchop is amazing! I am of mixed race and have very curly hair, though this was my first time going to a curly hair salon. I went into the salon with my curly hair and sat down with Moirya where she talked about my previous cuts and what I would want from my haircut. She proceeded to give me a dry cut and felt like she spent a lot of time going through each section of my hair. After the cut, Stephanie washed and styled my hair. I have also never left the salon curly after a cut, but WOW! She did an amazing job styling my hair and gave me an extremely polished look. Never written a Yelp review ever. But like everything in Brooklyn it looks a lot better than it actually is. I've never in my life cried because of the way someone cut my bangs but my bangs are totally fucked up now it looks like someone took play scissors to them and I literally am going to have to wait forever for the 3in she chopped off to grow back. Not to mention the placement is super bad and awkward. I'm almost 30 this is never happened to me before. Do not go here if your bangs are remotely difficult or have a cowlick. Oh man, I hate to write this, because I NEVER write negative reviews. Kate did my curly girl haircut, and its ok. The shorter pieces she cut don't curl so its kind of a mess, but don't think i can blame her for that. Now, I asked her, yes as an afterthought, to make my light highlighted blond hair pink. She made it orangey/red/pink. The color didn't take uniformly so it looks SUPER cheap, and it is not a pretty pale pink but a sad "autumn sunrise" ala Greece. i was joking about it at the salon, but when I got home EVERYONE asked me "what happened" to my hair. I am one of those nomadic hair salon customers - rarely go to the same place twice, always on a constant search for someone who understands my long, straight hair. Head Chop is now my local go-to salon - I have finally settled down!! Called on a Friday late afternoon (5:30pm), they had availability so I walked over with my mess of boring and way-over-due-for-a-cut head of hair. Don't be deceived by their simple entry - once you walk in the door you are immersed in an adorable, eclectic and comfy-cozy world. Stephanie cut my hair 5 months ago when she was working as an apprentice so I was able to snag a "hair model" appointment with her. She did such a fantastic job at cutting my curly/wavy hair. I'm pretty bad at communicating what I want in a haircut but she and Martha Ellen were so great at turning my very vague requests into a wonderful vision for my cut, and I walked out feeling like I had gotten "exactly what I wanted." The best part is that the cut has grown out really well. I was about to re-book when covid-19 hit and now I may not be able to get an appointment for a couple months, but my hair still looks pretty great which I 100% attribute to the quality of the cut I got. I seriously can not recommend Headchop enough to all my friends. I have curly hair that has seen it's fair share of bad haircuts, and Headchop always has me leaving looking amazing. I go to Alyx who is a curly hair genius. She always listens to what I want, but offers guidance and tweaks it so that the cut or color looks best with my face shape and skin tone. Short version: Elma is a curly gal's best friend. She chopped my hair dry and curly and made sure it's still looking great for my graduation six months later. Long version: My friend and I both spent the winter in Brooklyn doing an internship. We go to school in rural Vermont, so we saved ourselves for fancy New York haircuts. My friend has super fine, shoulder-length, straight hair which is gorgeous and bunny-soft. I, on the other hand, have a monster on my head. Indian hair, super curly, super frizzy, the type you have to wash every single day to get it to do the curling thang. There is no such thing as second day hair for me. I went Curly Girl a couple years ago, which has definitely helped, but the one thing I've discovered that helps more than anything else is DRY CUTTING. A terrifying prospect when we're so used to having our hair chopped when it's soaking wet, but why would you cut your hair dry when you wear it dry? Basically, my haircuts over the past two years have been at fancy salons in my Houston hometown specializing in dry curly cuts. They've been okay; nothing amazing, but much more even than previous wet cuts, when my curls all get evenly weighed down. I decided to look for a dry-cut salon in Brooklyn for my haircut, which would have to last me six months until I could be in a major city with actual salons again. Basically, my friend didn't care where we went; she has perfect hair, it's hard to screw it up. I went through all the major curly names in New York, NY, i.e. the usuals like Devachan and Ouidad, etc. Eventually, I got super overwhelmed by the mixed reviews. Enter Head Chop. Great reviews raving about two gals, Martha and Elma. Even some mention of a cute dog. Sounds awesome. We take the bus over, walk in. We're immediately warmly greeted by employees and customers alike, as well as an adorable, fluffy, friendly pup. We're then given an appointment within the next hour, even on a busy Sunday. Score! We grab lunch at some hotdog place down the street and come back shortly after. We play with the doggy for a little while, and then my friend is whisked away. In what seems like minutes, her layers are beautifully fixed, the ends of her hair perfectly brushing her shoulders. Elma had worked her magic on my gal pal, but I was still terrified. The terror only mounted as Elma began running her fingers THROUGH my hair, combing out my curls. Who does that?! My previous curly stylists had cut each curl just as they were. I watched myself in the mirror in horror as I became akin to something resembling Diana Ross, as Elma pointed out happily between questions. And then the cutting began. I watched as huge amounts of frizzed out hair fell to the ground. Finally, she stopped and told me to hop up so we could go wash out my hair and dry it so she could see it curly again. I got up, clutching my hair to my head, horrified by the puffball look I was sporting. She lay me down in the chair, and I cringed, unsure what was coming next. Boy, I was dumb, I shouldn't have been so mistrustful. I was soon wrapped up in the familiar, comforting smell of my usual DevaCurl products, which she massaged through my hair with the utmost gentility. As she did so, she walked me through every step, telling me what she was doing and asking how I normally go about my own routine. She showed me how to squeeze out my hair, apply product, and tousle, then led me over to a dryer. At that point, Martha began checking on me to monitor my progress. She had the most BEAUTIFUL curls, and I asked if she did her hair herself. "Nope, Elma!" Okay, I was definitely in good hands. Half an hour later, I was back in the styling chair, and my hair was being scrunched/uncrunched. BEAUTIFUL CURLS. Perfectly stacked to avoid the dreaded Christmas tree effect, which Elma assured me wouldn't happen for a while, because she always does her cuts with the future of one's hairstyle in mind. Sure enough, here I am, six months later on the cusp of my graduation, and my hair is still looking pretty goshdarn good. I am actually thinking about relocating to NYC soon just for the heavenly combination of my trusted halal food cart guy and Head Chop. Bottom line: If anything in this review resonated for you curly girls that painstakingly read all reviews and dread the gamble of getting a haircut... Just c'mere! It's wonderfully located, not badly priced (I think I walked out having paid seventy bucks, and a chunk of that was just in tip), and the warmth of the establishment is incredible. Yesterday was my first time at Headchop. Martha cut my hair -- and I'm beyond pleased. My experience started with a cheery greeting from Katie -- the salon's assistant. About 10 minutes later, Martha walked out and introduced herself. So far, the friendly vibe is really putting me at ease. After getting me set up in a chair, Martha started out by asking me how I'd like my hair cut and which products I use. She then walked me through her plans for my 'do step-by-step. At this point, she hasn't even picked up the scissors and it's a 5-star experience. In short, Martha did a fabulous job and talked to me in depth about styling and products that work best for my hair texture. For context, I'm African American and have a short curly afro. Originally, I only wanted my sides and back taken in, and a more flattering, tapered shape. The cut turned out shorter than I anticipated, BUT I NEEDED IT because my ends were dry and split. Martha assured me that trimming off those ends will help me grow it out -- which is essentially the end goal. I've already scheduled a follow up appointment for color. Lastly, shout-out to Katie. Extremely disappoinated. Worst hair cut ever. I walked in with a grown out diamond shaped hair cut. She agreed, that my hair is grown out and that we should take out the heaviness. The entire hair cut didnt last longer then 15 minutes. She didn't do much other than cutting around on the outside. She said she would cut my hair further and even it out in the front after we washed my hair. That never happened. Another person washed my hair, put tons of products in it, left the conditioner in to weigh it down, and then added another portion of leave in conditioner, gel AND oil and put me 40 minutes under the dryer. That was it = 100 $. They send me out with still damp hair, (freezing cold outside) saying that it will dry due to my 'body heat'. It did dry and due to the massive product 'abuse' it became a stiff heavy frizzball. I had to wash it again. My curls were so stiff and hard that I couldnt even wear my hair open. It was not soft, or jumpy. It was just one heavy stiff mass of products. I did show her images of what I wanted and what my hair looked before. She nodded yes and agreed...and then went into a completely different direction doing her own thing. Besides that, they have this 'too cool fo school attitude'. I reallllllly wanted to like it here -- I waited over a month for an appointment because of all the good reviews. Unfortunately, I ended up with one of my least favorite haircuts since high school. Pros: 1. Half of my head looks nice. 2. When washing and putting product in my hair she explained exactly what she was doing so that I could replicate it. The routine was also pretty simple and can be done quickly on a daily basis (unlike some of the other "curly hair salons" I have been to). 3. The curls themselves are actually pretty nice and healthy Cons: 1. Half of my head looks horrible. It was cut so that the front and side are about chin length, and the back is below shoulders, with a sharp difference in length. It looks like steps. To their credit, I called them and told them I was unhappy and I was able to come in to get it fixed free of charge. The fix didn't not help at all, though, and after 2 weeks I am still EXTREMELY unhappy with how my hair looks. I usually wait a decent amount of time in between cuts because they grow out nicely but I think I will have to make another appointment somewhere else to get this fixed. Big bummer. read more

What a great place! The interior design is very eclectic and cozy, her husband also has a clothing business in the same space. They both are very lovely people. Martha did a great job on the cut. She was very patient and really listened to what I was saying. She took her time and kept checking in to see if I was happy with the progress. I would definitely go again and recommend to others. I take responsibility for being late and understand it's the salon's policy but this felt like a petty punishment for a first time customer. Martha at Head Chop literally saved my hair. After a horrendous dye job and a rude stylist, I bailed and walked past Head Chop. After she did my color and blow dried it out, I thought to myself as I looked in the mirror, "My hair looks like honey!". The color that I think my original stylist was attempting, but massacred. Martha is very outgoing, her salon is clean and orderly, no Tabatha Take-Over needed here. She specializes in curly hair, which I happen to have and love that she doesn't give me the typical christmas tree haircut that stylists usually do with curly hair. I've gone three times now, and will continue to go back because she makes my hair happy and is fairly priced :-) read more

This place is awesome. The whole atmosphere is so laid back, there's an adorable dog named Rudy, and everyone who works there is so nice. Elma did an amazing job with my fine, wavy (2b) hair both times I've been here. She listens to exactly what I want and clarifies things when necessary so that we are both on the same page. When she cuts it, she works with my hair's natural wave and gives my hair life. And she gives great advice for my hair too! Added bonus: I asked her to cut my hair short my second time here. She cut some off and showed me how it looked every time before proceeding to cut more, just to give me a chance to stop her from cutting too much. I really appreciated that. Also, my second time here, their new assistant Amy washed and styled my hair (with guidance from Elma). She did a great job! The massage she gave my scalp was so relaxing too. :) As for styling, I told them I like volume, so they gave me VOLUME, lol! It was a pleasant surprise. And they really brought out and enhanced my waves. And more importantly, they teach you step-by-step how to wash and style it yourself while they do it, so you can keep getting awesome hair days on your own. I found Head Chop through Yelp and I couldn't be happier with the results of my entire experience. From my first contact with the salon was when I called to make an appointment to the moment I walked out the door, I have nothing but praise for this salon. When I called to book an appointment, I knew I wanted a cut + color but wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do for color. Katie suggested that rather than making an appointment for a service that might not be the right fit, I should come in for a consultation (on a weeknight, when I could fit it into my schedule) and talk it out. I went in, chatted with Elma and wound up getting my cut + color done on the spot. I felt totally at ease in Elma's chair - we had a great exchange and she addressed each of my concerns about my current state of hair affairs. She readily shared her opinions and knowledge but most importantly, the cut and color I received were spot on. I walked out feeling like the best version of myself to date. Because of the way that Elma discussed what she was doing and gave instruction, I learned how to style my now wavy hair, and it really makes a really big difference. I actually waited a week to write this review in order to be more impartial...a haircut isn't truly great unless you can style it yourself. I'm awful at hair in general but it has looked great this past week since my appointment! To me, Head Chop is the total package: friendly, unpretentious people with excellent knowledge and skills, a great workspace, a friendly dog who greets clients and hangs with them throughout their visit, and a totally reasonable price list. I also appreciated that there was no pressure to purchase products (though I did, because I loved the result and it was so different from what I was working with prior to my appointment.) After searching NYC for a cheap bang trim spot, I stumbled upon Head Chop and couldn't be happier. Martha got me and a friend in the same day we called and was so sweet over the phone. The place is adorable! We were greeted by Martha's puppy, hangout coats hung up and cozied into the vintage feeling salon. absolutely LOVE my hair cut from Martha. I went in for a root touch up and a cut on my long curly hair. we discussed my needs and she started clipping away at my dry hair. then she touched up the roots, had her assistant wash and style my hair. then she went in and cut some more individual curls and it looked so amazing. i want her to do my hair every single day. i have long, naturally curly hair and i have never had someone be so in tune with the way curly hair reacts. i have gotten so many compliments on my hair since. i found my new girl. i am not going anywhere else from now on. martha, you rock! they are downstairs and there are wooden scissors outside but no big sing. there is a little delivery truck parked on the street that says Head Chop that helps you locate it, too. little doggy Rudy running around and amazing art to keep you entertained. good stuff. read more

I've been cutting my own curly hair for a while now and it became just plain ugly and unhealthy. Went in and got a cut from Martha and it looks excellent. Layers are beautifully blended and she kept the length at my request which is a rarity in my experience with haircuts. In fact, she gave me precisely the hairstyle I did not want (generic hipster cut). She was also pretentious and mean when asked for advice about how to maintain a hairstyle. After some unpleasant back and forth with her, I managed to get a slightly better cut but not at all what I wanted. For $40 and a "best curly hair salon" article on Gothamist, I was expecting much better service and an amazing haircut. If you're a guy and want anything other than abrasive service and the generic hipster look (long on top, short on the sides. I just got my hair cut and colored by Martha Ellen and I am just so happy! I've been to a few other places around the city and they've all been fine with my curly curly hair, but none of them have wowed me or made me feel amazing. I felt like both Martha Ellen and the young woman who washed/styled my hair (Kaite?) really listened to me and understood what was going on with my head, and I ended up coming out of there with EXACTLY what I wanted in terms of style and color, which is SO RARE. With all the glowing reviews I figured it was a no brainer to cut my frizzy-curly hair at HC. I did not see stylist Casey mentioned on Yelp, but given the positive HC press, I figured she'd be as good as Martha or the oft-mentioned others. And she WAS lovely and patient. And the salon IS as cozy and inviting as they say. And everyone including Casey was friendly as could be. Even the process she followed and products she applied kept my curls spirally and successfully combated my frizz. BUT. My haircut is off. I didn't notice till several shampoos later that a section of my hair hangs down my back noticeably longer and isn't blended in too well. SO, as much as I love the products and the curly hair treatment, I won't be going back for another cut. read more
